Steam Family Library Sharing

Guys, did you know you can share games with up to 5 friends via Steam? I just learned about this today and how cool is that? Here is a brief explanation how it works. The only limitation is that there can always be only one person playing the game online. As a workaround the "host" can go offline in steam and still play the game, while a "family member" plays it being logged into Steam. If you don't own the game yourself, you have to be logged in.

To my knowledge, you only get kicked if both want to play the same game. In that case, the true owner has privilege of course. So, I don't think it is so troubling to ask "Hey, do you still play Styx or can I give it a shot?". ;)

IMHO, it's garbage. People can only play games in your library when you are not.

Well that's exactly the same as lending somebody a game, can't see a problem with it. The only real issue with the system is how easy it is to bypass non-VAC bans.

The system is way too confusing.

Last time I tried if I tried to play a game I own I wouldn't be able, even if the other person played another game.

It's a system not thought out to the end.

Library sharing should be done much better.

"I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."...

"Send them a request to authorize you. "

How to do that? Nowhere do they answer that. The worst and most complicated process is never explained, there are no buttons.

It feels wrong.

The option shows up immediately if you log into your account on another computer with Steam games belonging to another account or log into somebody else's account on your own computer, install a game and then try to play that after logging back into your own account. You can send a request right there and then by just trying to play a game that isn't tied to your account but is installed on the computer you're using. I found out by reading about it, so I imagine you've just missed where it's said. They made it very clear that it has to be somebody with access to your computer or account, and that you can't simply send a request via your friends list, hence family sharing.

That's what I thought when I tried setting it up for my nephews when the system first went public. But it doesn't work that way. Sure, you can't play the game in use. But you also can't play any other game in your library. I can browse the store. I can chat with friends. But if I play a game, any game, while one of my games is in use, that person will be kicked.

Thanks. I will try it out again with a friend.

That's how you tell the kids its time for bed! :P

I'm the house cook so nobody else knows, but I discovered while home alone that turning on all four hobs of the electric cooker at once will short the house. I have so much power and they have no idea.

Nah, I took it apart and found that it's just the heating element on one particular hob that's flipping the RCD provided all the other hobs are on too. Replacing one would mean replacing them all, so I've left it and am enjoying living in the knowledge that I have the house's electronics by the balls should I get sassed.

Yes. You might as well lend your account credentials.

You mean the money on the Steam Wallet?

It works!

Seems alright although I don't like the inability to play my games from my library while sharing it. But I can deal with it. Everything for friends!

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
