NVidia 8800 GT or GTS are quite cheap now, and still very good. You can jump up one notch with the 8800 GTX, though that will be a tad more expensive.

All three should work fine with dark mod. I personally have a 8800 M on my notebook, and an 8800 GTS 768mb on my PC back in Australia (moved to Czech Republic two weeks ago).

I'd recommend avoiding the eVGA manufactured ones. One of my computers is on its third eVGA 8800GTS, after the first two died within a year each, and I never overclocked them at all and both regularily cleaned them and gave them plenty of space inside the CPU. Alternatively, the BFG GTX260 on my primary computer hasn't so much as sneezed.

I windowed Tears of St. Lucia and looks like I still have problems. Sorry. If you can offer other scenarios to try, I will be glad to help you. Actually, I worry that these bugs may remain unfixed.

I second Dram on the advice he's given.

I have a 8800GTS and nothing I've tested or played for TDM has given me any trouble at all. I can run St Lucia at 1680x1050 and its smooth with no lag at all.

In the interest of future proofing I'd get something superior to a 8800GTS and that will make sure that additions to TDM will be safe too.

Unfortunately, some of the graphical glitches related to the lightgem process are difficult to fix without access to parts of Doom3 that are currently closed-source (i.e., the renderer). We hope that when D3 becomes open source we'll be able to squash them once and for all.

I'm surprised the AI remain transparent in windowed mode though, that doesn't happen for me. Maybe it's actually a different bug where the top half of the AI are cut off completely somewhere between the waist and shoulders? Is it specific parts of the AI that are transparent, like the face and hands, or is it more like a line going thru the entire AI above which nothing is there? Is the player's bow also transparent?

Hmm, that actually looks like certain layers of the builder guard mesh are not being displayed. I can see the layer that is the inside of the skirt, but everything else is missing. If it was a texture problem, then it would just show up as black. I wonder if you have a corrupted md5mesh file? Are the other two characters (the priest and beggar) the same?

Yes, they are the same...

Btw I just reinstalled TDM - Saintlucia again. Now everything looks screwed up and the terrain is pitch black :(

EDIT: Wow, now I turned VertRefresh ON and terrain textures are back, but AIs still look as shown on the upper screenshot.

That's actually not an uncommon problem. If the terrain looks black but the models look ok, then it is probably because your image compression is not set properly. It should be UsePrecompressedtextures "1".

Here are a few other random quotes that may or may not help:

Heres a possible theory to texture problems.

I had Thief's Den installed and when I extracted to Doom3 I think it asked me if I wanted to overwrite DevIL.dll and I swore I said yes. When I loaded Lucia for the first time I had no textures.

Remembering the overwrite, I extracted a second time to desktop and noticed all it does is make a saintlucia folder and an outside file DevIL.dll

\doom3\saintlucia

\doom3 (DevIL.dll,readmest1.txt,revision.txt)

edit: (doesnt make a doom3 folder)

I erased all instances in Doom 3 and moved the files from desktop into \doom3 (structured like above) and I had textures. Thats is all I did, no reboot, change res nothing. Just a second run.

Another thing you might want to try when getting graphical glitches :

Go to the /glprogs directory in the Darkmod dir, and rename the "interaction.vfp" to something else. Then restart the game.

Go into your doomconfig.cfg in the saintlucia folder and set

useprecompressedtextures 1

useallformats 1

Thanks, but all efforts are unsuccessful up to this moment.

Looks like I'll keep stuck to Thief's den settings when it comes to editing. It gives me everything I need so I can create a basic mission with guards. And it looks fine. I hope this won't meet objections :)

If you're main purpose is to learn how to map, then I think you'll learn a lot just making a small FM with the Thief's Den stuff, especially given the circumstances. You should know that a good number of things may not survive the transition to the full Darkmod, so you might have to rebuild a bit later if you want people to be able to play it. But if you're really anxious to start building, and it's mostly just for learning anyway, and that's the way you see forward, then go for it. :)

Anyway, in the meantime you can still work on trying to get DR to open with the StLucia stuff, so if you do finally manage it one day, it'd be easy to transfer the map you've been working on right into it and you'll have gotten a lot of work done in the meantime.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Radeon HD 4850 and 4870 are good too ;)

Ha! So what if I am, huh? Anyways, I work better when I'm drunk. It makes me fearless! If I see a bad guy, I'll just point my sword at him. And saaaaaay "HEY! Bad guy! You're not s'pposed to be here! Go home or I'll stick you with my sword...'til you go...'Ouch I'm dead!' Ahahahah (hic) See? Ain't no one gonna be messin with old Benny."

I posted about it before, but I think the default tdm logo video looks outdated. For a (i.m.o.) better looking version, you can download the pk4 attached to this post and plonk it in your tdm root folder. Every mission that starts with the tdm logo then starts with the better looking one. Try for example mission COS1 Pearls and Swine.

I finished DOOM - The Dark Ages the other day. It is a decent shooter, but not as great as its predecessors, especially because of the soundtrack.
