  1. Here's a video of the burning bridge escape sequence. It seems to be completely linear with a lot of scripted events. I wouldn't need that in any other game but in a game called Thief it's absolutely out of place. And if you want to get a good impression of the game don't watch the rest of the stream because this guy is really bad at it. He would propably make the originals look terrible.
  2. Archlinux works very well for a rolling release distro. If you want to customize your system exactly the way you need and want current software updates as soon (nearly) as they are available, Arch is the way to go. You have to do everything yourself but it is very well documented and much simpler than other distros. But be aware that, because Darkradiant is not in the repositories, it has to be built again everytime the Arch package manager installs a new version of boost.
  3. The developers have seen to many comic book superhero movies.
  4. Welcome. I like your taste in games, especially Hexen and Heretic. You have to rely on fan made content to get level design anywhere near as cool as this nowadays.
  5. 7 days left. The game is doing well on steam greenlight but funding is slow. There's still a good chance of success though. is an updated pitch video. At 0:40 Guido starts talking about the game and what kind of RPG it is supposed to be. If you're interessted but don't know what to expect, give the video a try.
  6. It's going slowly but steadily. What interests me about this is, that it's aiming to be more complex than many modern (action) rpgs. It's a more accessible spiritual successor to the (very hardcore) Realms of Arkania series. You are controling a party but due to the inclusion of disadvantages (negative character traits like necrophobia or violent temper etc.) many unexpected things can happen with or between your party members. I hope that they can build fun and surprising quests around that idea.
  7. I have just recently played Brutal Doom for the first time myself and it is as good as everyone says. This incarnation of Doom is more fun than any other shooter I've played in the last few years. It's much faster than modern games and you have to move and evade instead of wait for your health to regenerate. F@$# gamepads!
  8. I guess it's kind of an evolution of that former project. The new one is supposed to be more focused, smaller and less open. This blog entry explains it.
  9. There's a new oldschool RPG project on Kickstarter. It's made by a german RPG veteran, Guido Henkel, known for Realms of Arkania and propably not as famous outside of germany. If you've never heard of these old games, Legends of Grimrock is a good reference point. Here are the key features according to the kicksterter page: Single player, first person Party-based play (four player-, plus two non-player characters) Six races and eight classes to choose from Over 34 unique character traits, plus base attributes Party characters interact with each other Turn-based combat Indoor and outdoor environments Complex puzzles and evolving quests Combine items to build weapons and traps Interactive game world Recipe-based crafting and enchanting Involving, adaptive storyline with many key players and twists Factions for intriguing political set-ups Tons of monsters to battle Dialogues—yes, you will be in awe at our cool and intelligent dialogue system Cheese toast I backed it. Is anyone here interested in this kind of game?
  10. A Machine for Pigs is not as bad as everyone says. It's just very different from The Dark Descent. It's very linear and not challenging but still scary and atmospheric. The only difficult thing about it, is figuring out the story. You have to pay close attention and piece it together for yourself. Unfortunately, that's the only reason to play it more than once.
  11. Can we still expect a performance improved version? It doesn't run very well on my system unfortunately.
  12. Carcass are back after nearly 20 years. The new album is great, but, as always, the old stuff is better. The following song converted me to extreme music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaXS4nAx0jU
  13. A game you never played was the most intense experience of your gaming life? Sounds like it should have been a movie instead of a game. Edit: Or did you refer to The Walking Dead? I must try that some day.
  14. The scene reminds me of Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
  15. Exclusive content sucks. That just makes the product very unattractive for anyone who doesn't want to pay full price even before the release. But you can't fault the developer for that. They don't make that decision. This mission also does look exactly the same as the one already shown. Is it the monotonous lighting or reuse of assets? I can't get excited about this.
  16. Do you need someone extremely nitpicky and whiny? I can do that and would be glad to help.
  17. I'm roughly in the range of obsttortes speed. And I consider that fast, compared to what I had just a couple of years ago.
  18. Me too. But I think it is very important to be able to enjoy games. Otherwise, how do you know whether what you create is actually fun or not?
  19. I feel that way with music. But I only want to (physically) own very few books or movies. It's the content that counts not the storage medium. And I think ebooks are a great idea as soon as you can get them without copy protection. But that's off topic. Congratulations on using the word "masturbating" in an Amnesia thread. I like the story as far as I understood it but when the actual game falls short it's better to write a book instead.
  20. I thought like that too once but I changed my mind. I have to many game boxes around already and it's just a waste of space. You can buy the game online without any drm and I think it's much better installing it from an external drive (or wherever you choose to store it) than a slow disc drive.
  21. Having played (not finished) it for two nights I have to say it's not as good rsp. terrifying as The Dark Descent. That game had you on edge almost all of the time. These moments of terror still exist but it's mostly just unnerving. Since you're relatively relaxed for a good part of the time it becomes apparent that Amnesia is a very simple game and it is even more simplified here. It's more linear, the puzzles are easy, you don't have an inventory anymore and you don't need to worry about running out of oil for your lamp or losing your sanity in the darkness. The only challenge is to force yourself to move on through the really scary parts but that doesn't happen to often. It's still a good game but it doesn't reach its predecessor.
  22. Windows users always find someone stupid enough (like me) to maintain it for free. It does definitely not run without issues. And once you're used to the package manager of your distribution, I don't know how you could go back to the way you install and update software under windows. A lot of people I know think software updates are a bad thing just because it's such a pain on windows. My point is that there are issues that most people don't perceive as such because they don't know anything else.

    laptop hiccups

You could try booting up some linux live system and see how that behaves. Not really a solution but you get a better idea whether its a hardware or software/driver problem.
  24. Could be a mod problem. Then you're not the one who has to fix it. Patience.
