Sintel: The Movie - has been released

I watched it before. I like the spirit of the project; made entirely on open software by academics & enthusiasts developing the tech for the people. And it's good... It's not like a lot of older CG pet projects where things are still blocky and the animation is awkward and people forgive them for that because they're CG. You don't have to excuse anything for this because it honestly looks good. The environments looked great; animation was fluid; characters & models were very good, and the story works. Nothing revolutionary, but I liked it.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Do you know if the animations were motion-captured or 'made by hand'?

I just watched the first four minutes, now YouTube needs to load the rest... It looks nice and this is the first I see of this. Nothing to complain atm. I hope it gets darker and sinister, I have enough of this CGI-family-movies... Though, the Elephant Trailer looked interesting and dark, downloading it and even Buck Bunny.

edit: Alright, watched the movie and I´m disappointed with the story:

I recognized the dragon in the very first moment! And he dies cause of this little wound?

Hell, she could´ve been a famous Dragon-ryder like Rynn in the Drakan-games. Though this movie didn´t inspired me in TDM (though I´m with DarkRadiant anyway) it inspired me to replay Drakan again, superb atmospheric Soundtrack, incredibly long legs and nice gameplay. :)

Yeah, it definitely gets marks for technical achievement & spirit (only using Blender) over story. To be honest, I spent most of the time dissecting the objects, effects, and animations in the scenes than following the story very well anyway, and the mise-en-scene for that matter. (Especially after "Somewhere Above the City" has inspired me to think about how to make movie-like cutscene clips in TDM.)

This was a very nice film. It is amazing what computers can do. It is also nice to see people creating content and releasing it to the public in its entirety. Someone could use the assets to make a fan-created sequel to Sintel for example... or a game. If I wasn't strapped for cash right now, I would buy the DVD to support them. :( Perhaps in a few months...

Compare this to the mainstream entertainment industry, where the only goal is to lock up and control every aspect of the content for ever. I would be much happier to pay the Sintel creators than any TV or movie studio for this reason.

Now, some questions.

Is there a video card on the planet that could do this in real-time? I doubt it. :) I remember being completely stoked when the Doom 3 stuff was shown in 2001, but the amount of polygons in this movie is pretty staggering. Also, since this is completely CG, you could "re-shoot" the film from any camera angle at any resolution you wanted, right?

Already watched it, and for such a short movie the story was very much okay. It should create enough interest to make Blender known to an even wider audience, so I think they reached their goal. If you haven't seen it and if your computer supports 1080p content, you definitely should watch the hi-res version. This is pure graphics porn.

My Eigenvalue is bigger than your Eigenvalue.

The story pisses me off - should be a happier ending, I don't care what anyone else says.

But yeah, extremely impressive achievement

(although I have a pet peeve of anything with credits almost as long as the main event)

They also made another movie "big buck bunny" - fucking hilarious

I have updated the first post with links

There's

too, you know. It's a strange movie but that's kind of what I like about it and if anything I think this one would inspire people more than Sintel. Edited by Nosslak

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
