for some types of people aye. still not clear if it is something you can be genetically predisposed for.

some strangeness that can come from genetical disposition, i have a very high pain tolerance but an abysmal tolerance to certain pain killers like morphine. which in my case is kinda good as i can keep myself relatively pain free despite having broken my back in two places and damaged the nerves beyond repair. i take 2 x 10 mg contalgin a day where others with my kind of damage need several hundred mg's of it.

my family had a few alcoholics in it, one of my moms sisters for one. she eventually stopped but stopping to abrubtly after so many years kills you faster than just drinking and she died .

yeah it sucks and those who suffer the worst are those left behind.

luckily i been free of this addiction in fact i only drink once a year (newyear) not because im a saint but i actually dont like the taste of alcohol that much.

@taaaki Would it be possible to configure the forum software so that you don't have to click 4 or 5 times on "Show previous comments" to display all comments at once when you visit a status update? See the screenshot:

The best in my eyes would be to just display all the comments by default.

I did a bit of digging through the forum settings and I could not find any configuration for this. Looking at the underlying code, the comment count per page is hardcoded to 3. I could update the code, but I'm reluctant to do so as this would need to be re-applied after each update.

That being said, it looks like we should start to brace for status updates being removed as Invision Forums v5 no longer supports status updates (we're still on v4.x):

well mom got diagnosed with terminal cancer so yeah... well she is 83 and might get a few more years around but to keep her alive they have to use an agressive radiation treatment which saps her power so in the end its allmost as if it would be better to just let it run its course. sounds a bit heartless i know but if my last years have to be spent sleeping all day i might as well bite the bullet and go in for the big one anyway. so im not much at home in the comming time so expect delays in my posting.

its sad yes, not what i expected since the women in my family tend to get near 100 smoking 'or' not.

ill just settle for savoring the time she has left and hope she one day doses off without any pain.

in retrospect im near 60 myself so it does not come as a total shock, she was quite young when she got me after all.

our family was big but i buried most of them so im used to death by now, still it leaves a scar. im not a believer in the sense that i expect to see my family again when the time comes, more like i believe our energy goes somewhere or becomes something else entirely (worm food most likely heh). the mark we make in the world is in the eyes of those that come after us and to be frank we done a shit job securing their future, thats why i newer got kids.

when my time comes my wish for people around me is to be a better man/woman than we were.

I decided to postpone upgrading my GPU, but I'm still unsure whether it's worth spending money on the necessary kits and learning how to do this kind of thing.

A  while later, I realised that my soldering skills are terrible , and sometimes I burn the PCB traces. I will never forget my first experience soldering at my previous job. (it's getting better, thankfully)

i need to mend my purchasing acumen

Kicad PCB designing seems to be a very complex matter for computer science background, but it might be easier for those with an electrical engineering background

strangely if you tend to burn the pcb the soldering iron might not be hot enough if you have trouble getting the solder to flow this is most likely the culprit. yeah it sounds nuts but consider the ammount of time you need to keep the soldering iron on the pcb and it makes sense

I found an alternative to the above project: Gigatron TTL CPU. it's simpler by order of magnitude . I just love seeing projects like that.

I am not satisfied with just trying out the simulated circuit in Logisim

It seems worth spending time learning all this . i know it can be tough. The problem now is how to source all the electronic components. that's what set me back

I need a shipping forwarding service to buy from AliExpress. Not all components and TTL chips are sold here. Shipping from Mouser & Jameco is very expensive. I don't know if Jaycar Australia has everything I need.

Kicad can be a little daunting for non professionals indeed. There is a pcb designer tool which might be better for a novice named fritzing. It is part of the msys2 mingw packages but can also be downloaded standalone.

compared to my time when we had to draw the circuit boards by hand things have indeed come far .

sadly the automation and reduction of component sizes also ment i lost my income as a radio tech because things got so small you needed a microscope and some damn advanced tools to even repair modern applications. thats why the only repair guys i still know of newer touch a soldering iron instead they buy the whole module and it is outrageously expensive today to even open a tv. so for the lower priced models there simply is no market for repairing them as it quickly gets more than twice as expensive as simply buying a new apperatus. but for hobbyist it can still be quite giving to master it.

btw bot kicad and fritzing can build the pcb for you if you have the electrical diagram. simply import it into either and it will build the pcb layout for you  kicad has more options for customizing the layout though.

might actually start making pcb's for some high end tube amps i have the diagrams for . ill sell them as repair or upgrade kits for those who have one of those models with the original pertinax pcb's. ill get them made in high grade glass fiber instead for longevity cause the pertinax models tend to get burned and brittle after a few years use.

im still bogged down with my mom so atm only thing i got ready was upgrading my second x99 PC with an AMD board and a ryzen 3700x. except i seem to have lost my bracket for mounting my noctua NH-D15 on the AM4 socket sigh...

so it will be up and running sometime in the near future but i cannot say when i get the time for all the stuff i have planned 

well the new build will sport my RTX 3070 and 32 gb gskill DDR4 ram. the 3700x is far from the best but its what i had money for and it wont bottleneck a 3070 to badly, at some point ill up it to a zen 3 5xxx model.

the 5900x i use for my 2080 ti is actually plenty good and runs like hell on wheels  despite the 2080 ti being a PCIE 3 card. only thing that is any problem atm is path of exile 2 which is a cpu hog the likes of which we will hopefully newer see again lol. other than that it runs alan wake 2 on high with raytracing on medium and near 60 fps so im plenty ok with it.

i sold one of my old x99 boards and keept the other one for running a development server. it runs with a 6950x 10 core i7

so 20 threads gives me plenty of power for compiling msys2 packages and i made some unofficial ones for 32 bit clang and ucrt with all the bells and whistles. im trying to port classic flang to our package system since it still supports 32 bit fortran code and msys2 has dropped developing 32 bit packages for anything but the old msvcrt mingw compiler.

rust has also been a rather thorny experience on clang 32 since clang uses memory mapping instead of malloc it runs out of memory space on the newer rust models since memory mapping disregards the large adress aware flag and limits memory to 2gb instead of 4. not sure i can work around that since it would require a rather substantial rewrite of the standard library. for now most rust packages build with the 1.81 version of rust (not the latest svg library though).

so i can provide 32 bit clang and ucrt packages for my ports of clang and gcc if anyone needs those.

btw both kicad and fritzing are part of the above and work fine with 32 bit windows

last parts for the machine are on the way so hopefully done sometime soon.

gave me an excuse to clean up the parts (the cabinet is a bit to well circulated it seems, because even though i clean it once a month i discovered the coolers were clogged with hard packed dust...).

so seems i will have to get some air filters for the lian li lancool 3 cabinet.

ok got it up and running but im having a bit of a problem. the front usb C header does not work with my old 2080 ti gfx card  works fine with my rtx 3070 though huh ?!?. if i plug it in when using my 2080 ti the board refuses to start and the led's flash on and off no Q code, if i use my 3070 card it just works wtf...

i wonder if it has anything to do with the 2080 ti having its own usb C header ?.
