I've updated all the textures previously posted and am tossing a few more into the flock. I will keep posting them all in this thread along with download links (later tonight), at least until the FTP / CVN / online thing works. If all the textures are approved I will convert to DDS / rename files appropriately.

 

I am still working solo but if any mapper needs / wants a certain texture of a specific variation please feel free to ask for it. I am here at your disposal.

Yes, nice work, all of them. I'm not sure if the eagle sign fits our setting, but the standards are ok.

 

I think this has already been asked in your public thread back then, but what is the resolution of these images? Ideally, the normalmap should be 1024 (as the most detail is in the normals) and the diffuse at least 512 (or better 1024). The specular (if any) should be at max. 512.

OK, here's another window. Looking at it now (as if I haven't been looking at it enough) I think it could use some more dirt dripping... I'll fix that tonight, and include a download link for that and the other window.

 

The rug texture is for the next set. I also fixed some of the other textures. Is anybody waiting for download links?

 

Greebo: ok, do you have a design you already assigned to one of the manor houses? or can you give me a better idea of what you're looking for?

Download links would be great, although I think we could go ahead and take you through a short tutorial of how to upload these textures into our repository. I don't know if you've read the wiki tutorials yet (i.e. http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php/...to_The_Dark_Mod), but I can guide you through the process, if you're ready.

 

I'd be happy to see the ones you posted above in our repository.

I'm not sure what you mean, I didn't talk about manor houses...? Do you mean which setting the stained glass textures should fit in?

I'll post the download links tonight, it would easier if you uploaded them to the repository yourself for now. I tried the SVN thing but didn't see any upload option.

 

The design I mean the carpet texture with the eagle, you said it's not appropriate. Do you have any existing house (family) insignia I can use or should I design a new one? If so, any particular style/theme to follow?

I can handle the upload, no problem. :)

 

Sooner or later you'll get the hang of SVN anyway, so that you can upload them yourself. I have a few SVN articles for you on the wiki to get you started (linky) - no need to read through it right away, but it's definitely something you need to master when working on The Dark Mod.

There's nothing inherently wrong with eagle symbolism, it's just that your particular image looks a bit on the modern side. Perhaps it's the letters, or the way the letters and eagle are surrounded by a lighter colour border as if they were decals or something. It strikes me as something that might be stitched on the uniform of a college football team.

 

In general, textures like this should be kept fairly generic, but anything vaguely medieval will work.

K, the two windows have all the maps ready for download, including DDS and naming. No material shaders though, I still have to figure that one out. If green light I'll post the rest of the DL links.

 

Check out the rug design now - fully packed with keys and swords and whatnots. L. B. obviously stands for Lacrosse Babes, I just ripped off their team logo. No eh I mean Lord Bafford, I suppose he's not in the mod but what the hell.

 

I also updated the marble ones.

Go go go! I can prepare the shaders too, it's probably best if you have a look overt them (after I will have committed them) to see how I did it.

I think at a minimum I'd remove the letters, otherwise you're limiting the number of FMs that can use the texture.

Well, like I said, you can see the outline of the logo as a different colour against the background, which makes it look like it was added with a photoshop overlay effect. There are a few different ways to get rid of that depending on the original image...sometimes adjusting the contrast or transparency is enough, or perhaps a colour selection to delete that area, though that doesn't always work well.

Thank you for the crit man, I've overlooked some basic elements and it was pretty sloppy. Don't think you've said any of this before, though. Don't hesitate, please, that's the best way to improve.

Hey shotgun, I've started adding your textures to SVN. :)

 

A few comments:

 

Great work so far, the mossy grey bricks texture, the mud, the marble and the windows are excellent and will be on SVN soon (already added the mossy bricks and the mud).

 

The local map of mossyXXL is broken (there are thin black lines on it).

 

Most textures don't need a specular map.

 

The sewer bricks could be a little bit deeper.

 

The leaves look a little bit flat.

 

The rugs could also use more of a local map to make them appear more fluffy.

 

 

Keep up the good work, I can assist you with the local maps if you want. :)

- Rugs localmap detail: I will try, although this is so high-frequency & low-relief I am not sure it's even within range of detail to include in localmaps, relatively to others. I mean, we are talking about mere millimeters of height, if we emphasize this in the rugs it will be inconsistent with other textures, no?

 

I don't feel like I need help with the localmaps but if you wonna squeeze in or feel like you have something to contribute please go ahead. I can send u PSDs of hightmaps or whatever.

Thanks shotgun, the bricks look really sweet now. I've uploaded two more now, more to come... :)

 

The link to the leaf texture is not found.

 

Specular maps: the rugs for example don't need a specular map at all. Rugs are not supposed to be shiny. The same thing usually applies to most stone textures (although the specular looks very good on the yellow bricks).

 

Rugs localmaps: hm, the details are very small. Maybe try using the plain white one with the normal map plugin?

Sorry fixed the link.

 

I see whatcha saying about some surfaces reflecting little light, but to me even that requires definition, can be used to enhance some pixel-details and determine specular color. If you think, however, it is not necessary, just don't include it. Whatever you see fit.

I'd recommend reducing the saturation of the green just a tad, otherwise it looks good to me.

Woah there boys, slow down on the feedback! One at a time please! Anyways, I'll continue to work on the yellow window. It's really not stained glassy enough yet.

Here's another window in the works - not sure what surface to make the outer border thing (just used temp). Maybe make it more ornaments.

      Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
