  1. I find that a lot of people don't give Classical music much of a listen, but in this crowd that's probably not the case.

  2. @HMartFade in/ out is possible in TDM, see the test map below. The glow and grass textured planes will fade in and out. @duzenko @stgatilov Pasting from discord: Here is the test map I put together based on an old one Peter_spy had: lodfade_example.pk4 Couple bugs I noticed right off the bat: Light entities will not hide Strangely the SEED entity hides different func_static children at different distance even though they are set the same Any hide or LOD setting on SEEDs don't seem to propagate to their children. Didnt thoroughly test this though Fade only works with those specific materials in the material folder. Lod_fadeout_range controls the fade distance. This is absolute from the origin of the object and needs to be higher than the hide_distance. So its starts fading at the hide distance. Im not sure why its called lod_fadeout_range, maybe it fades after the last LOD stage? Im not sure but we'll need to investigate this. I assume if no LOD is set it just starts from the hide_distance.

  3. Bad intentions are equally relative and not necessarily the main reason for rejection. Hate speech in most cases has 3 main reasons, ignorance for being based on false information (foreigners take our bread and homosexuals are a bad influence on children), fanaticism because of their own fears and lack of self-confidence and an education in intolerance of what is different. All this reinforced by interested media ('This is not fake news, they say exactly what I think').

  4. I do like classical music, for sure, but I'm a huge sucker for violin. This has always been one of my favorites: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngjEVKxQCWs EDIT: And Beethoven absolutely was the metalhead of his time, without a doubt

  5. An e-guitar cover of a classic composer also works well

  6. Most metal fans, like me, love classical music, because metal and classical music have a lot in common- Sinfonic cover of a piece of a nordic death metal band, Moonsorrow

  8. I'll have you know I enjoy every weird artist I reported to the other thread. That said, while I do gravitate towards the unusual these days... ...I have some artists in particular that are a bit more conventional I also enjoy a lot. I'm not really into synthwave/retrosynth/whateverthehell in general, most artists just don't quite cut it, but I really like Perturbator's darksynth. The Uncanny Valley in particular is amazing. Too bad the new album sucks. The Midnight are a much dreamier side of the synth-coin compared to Perturbator. Not to mentioned it's predominantly sung. The vocal melodies really carry the whole thing. Any release is fine to start with, but Days of Thunder has freaking Days of Thunder. Anathema are rock band of some kind, but even then not really ordinary. Moody, with pianos, string sections, male and female vocals. I pretty much exclusively listen to them in the summer. If I have a favorite song, it's Untouchable pt.1. Weather Systems and Distant Satellites would be my recommended albums to check out. Worth mentioning I was a major metalhead in the past, but don't care much for the style as a whole these days. Not because of any notion of "new metal sucks", I just can't be bothered. Occasionally something exceptional happens, like the most recent Mgla album. Already knew the band, but Age of Excuse was the first album I bought.

  9. Ok, I tried to remove all the mentioned files. Then I added mainmenu_background_custom.gui with: windowDef BackgroundCustomSnowedInn { rect 0, 0, 640, 480 background "custom_goldwell_animated_menu" BACKGROUND_DEFAULT_BEHAVIOR(BackgroundCustomSnowedInn) } Then added to mainmenu_custom_defs.gui: //stgatilov #5323: disable briefing state #define ENABLE_MAINMENU_BRIEFING 0 //stgatilov #5323: set custom background #define MM_BACKGROUNDS_META_ALLSIMPLE BackgroundCustomSnowedInn In the new TDM: custom background works, briefing state is skipped. I have noticed that the parchment in difficulty selection screen looks dirty like it was in older versions (I guess texture is overridden), but that's not my problem. Then I got crash on startup in idBrittleFracture::Event_Touch for func_fracture_3: "other" is NULL. It deserves independent investigation, and I cannot test how many objectives look in-game. A brief glimpse shows that 3 objectives display fine, and I guess 6 objectives will simply show scrolling arrows. UPDATE: The crash is fixed on current SVN (5439). In 2.09, it works fine. All customizations are gone of course (default background, empty parchment). Interestingly, it does not crash on startup.

  10. Mission "Snowed Inn" by @Goldwell and @kingsal When I tried playing, I noticed custom background in menu, and skipped briefing state. The in-game list of objectives also looks different from normal. However, many files are overridden: mainmenu_background.gui (custom background in menu) mainmenu_briefing_video.gui (skip empty briefing parchment) mainmenu_main.gui (exactly equals to 2.09 version) mainmenu_objectives.gui (skip empty briefing + tiny change in difficulty labels) mainmenu_utils.gui (skip empty briefing on Escape during video) tdm_objectives.gui (6 objectives per page, size changes, don't hide on attack button) tdm_objectives_core.gui (6 objectives per page, size changes) tdm_objectives_defs.gui (6 objectives per page, size changes) Well... I wonder whether I should try to understand what was changed... UPDATE: Analyzed the changes. By the way, while this mission requires TDM 2.08, its overridden GUI files are taken from 2.05

  11. If that work had been done, and if it did show that certain types of hate speech can cause violence, then we would at least have something to discuss. But that work hasn't been done, and there are too many examples of "hate speech" that have no rational connection to violence whatsoever (even examples posted in this very thread) to make me think that is a likely conclusion. But, even if it were, it still wouldn't immediately follow that hate speech should be banned. We already know that religions can cause violence (at least according to the people committing it in the name of that religion) but because it is only a small percentage of the population committing that violence, we don't ban religions or religious texts. When Democrats demonize Republicans and then someone shoots a bunch of Republicans at a baseball game, we don't ban harsh political criticism. Nathaniel White said Robocop had inspired him to kill one of his victims. We don't ban violent movies. There was plenty of violence at the BLM protests last summer, but no one dreamed of banning the anti-police rhetoric, even after two police officers were murdered in their car. I could go on.

  12. Mission "Shadows of Northdale ACT 2" by @Goldwell. As usual, it overrides mainmenu_briefing_video.gui to avoid empty briefing parchment and mainmenu_background.gui to set custom background in menu. Removed both files. Added mainmenu_background_custom.gui: windowDef BackgroundCustomNorthdale2 { rect 0, 0, 640, 480 background "snowedinn_foggynight" BACKGROUND_DEFAULT_BEHAVIOR(BackgroundCustomNorthdale2) } Then added to mainmenu_custom_defs.gui: //stgatilov #5323: disable briefing state #define ENABLE_MAINMENU_BRIEFING 0 //stgatilov #5323: set custom background to main menu: #define MM_BACKGROUNDS_META_ALLSIMPLE BackgroundCustomNorthdale2 Things work perfectly in new TDM: custom background works, empty briefing skipped. In 2.09, the default background is shown, and empty briefing page is displayed --- as expected.

  13. A strong link between speech and violence can be demonstrated by performing an interventional study. This would mean selecting a number of comparable towns and generating hate speech in half of them, i.e. by sponsoring inflammatory articles in the local newspapers and hiring troll bots to post in local communities, then observing to see how incidents of violence against specific groups develop. This would be highly unethical given the possible consequences, so the next best thing may be to observe the effects of an existing hate speech campaign in certain towns, which may be carried out by far-right political parties/organisations or foreign governments. You don't have exact control over the input in that case, but should still have quite good results. A further method may be to systematically analyse public communications, i.e. demonstrating that whenever a local newspaper, politician or organisation publishes an inflammatory speech directed against a group, there's an increased risk of violence in that area in the period thereafter. As you imply, a sequence of events is not enough to infer causality on its own. But you are already a good part of the way there if you demonstrate a strong, temporal association; that the greater the exposure to hate speech, the greater the rise in violence; and that your results are reproducible and consistent across a variety of settings and modalities of hate speech. This would further be backed up by demonstrating plausibility through mechanistic studies, such as an experiment in which participants are given two versions of an article making the same arguments about a minority, but in which one is written in an inflammatory way, and comparing how it affects the participants' agreement with statements pertaining to the rights of minorities. So it's indeed possible to build a good case that hate speech causes violence. Furthermore, given enough power, studying the link could also identify which parts of the speech are problematic, giving a scientifically validated basis for defining hate speech. By extension it could be developed further into a classification system, ideally reducing human involvement to determining which characteristics are present, just as is done with speech that explicitly calls for violence. There are of course flaws to taking a scientific approach, such as that its conclusions are always subject to revision by later research and are by definition never 100% certain. But then, isn't this the fundamental problem of asking for proof that a law is likely to be effective? You don't seem to be asking for such evidence concerning speech that directly calls for violence, presumably because it seems more obviously plausible to cause violence and necessary to forbid, as well as for practical reasons, such as that it seems easier to identify it as well as prove malicious intent?

  14. @AluminumHaste: Yeah, Danny Elfman's Batman score had something and I am extremely delighted that you also like The Dark Crystal's score! @Zerg RushIf good ol Lou could hear how this you lady plays his music! ....and here comes the song to one of Walter White's most famous lines: "Stay away from my territory!" What a fracking fitting cool tune.

  18. Regarding the error that @duzenko got. The way "image_preload 0" works makes no sense for CPU-resident textures. I suppose if image is CPU-resident, then it must be loaded immediately even if someone has enabled not-officially-supported on-demand texture loading.
