  1. What, the public forum? Wouldn't it be better that we're tied up in the development forums than chit-chatting here?
  2. Oh shit! You're right, lol. I thought it worked the other way around. Thank you and sorry for the pointless thread.
  3. Good money says there will be a "You should convert to idTech5" thread, at some point in the future.
  4. http://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?showtopic=2052
  5. I'm consulting my German Professor. He's pretty familiar with both reformation Lutheran and pre-reformation German Catholicism. He and I will be digging to try and find what brings certain connotations to the names and titles. I'm an American and not a native German speaker, so I'll easily trust you guys concerning what implications are brought by what vocabulary. (Besides, this thread is a great exercise to strengthen my own sight translation! It's sometimes a curse to be tetralingual...)
  6. Well, if Werker gets the most votes, I'm all for it. But in the end, all players who vote in this poll have a say in this matter, regardless of what I'd prefer. So please everyone, flock to this thread and VOTE!
  7. We already have a pretty comprehensive list, broken into reasonable stages. Any animations we come up with that aren't there can be added to the list. http://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?showtopic=1650
  8. OK, I'll try to find time to set up a quick and ugly holding downloads page on my website. This will not have an upload so it will still need me to transfer from a file share website such as rapidshare. Probably need say a description.txt file so I can just paste it by the download, maybe an image. And I'll probably start an uploads thread.
  9. the headline basically says it: since about 3 days ago I can't access the cgtalk site+forums anymore. firefox tries to connect to the site for a few seconds than I get the "operation timed out" message, same thing with IE. I first thought they may have server-problems, but I asked some other guys and they don't seem to have any problems with the website. After that I tried it on another other PC and on a laptop here, which connect over the same router - they can't open cgtalk as well. Anyone an idea what's wrong?? They have actually no reason for banning me, since I probably have 10 posts per year and never had any argument over there - most of the time I'm just reading through the threads, which is quite interesting and I learned a lot over there.
  10. Those are basically "strictly new ones". I only revisited those that didn't make it into the release. I have also created a couple of other new textures by now and revisited some of the TDM textures. You can check some of them out in my contributor thread.
  11. This thread is intended for reporting materials and models containing problematic textures. Materials belonging to the wrong type - a wood texture that sounds like stone. Non-power-of-two sized textures - if a texture has dimentions that are not power of two. 64x128 115x73 Bad alpha textures - There are parts of a texture which should be transparent, but instead are opaque. Example And any other texture/material related issue. If you are not sure what to call it or how to describe it please include a screenshot! An inverted normal will have shadows where there should be rises, and rises where there should be shadows - cracks in wood would stick out of the wood, instead of into the wood as they are intended. As an example : Inverted Fireplace Texture If you're making materials in an automated normal application - please remember that Doom3 uses the "Direct3D" style normals, not OpenGL as you would assume. To get a name, select the material in DR, hit "S" for surface inspector and copy the name, for models, find the offending model and get its active material/name. The urls linked here aer for people who are releasing an FM before the fixes have been officially released, so that they may override the broken one with a fixed one. 12. I was finally able to fix my Black Screen problem. I had tried all the solutions listed in this thread but I still wasn't able to get TDM to work without the dreaded Black Screen so I decided to improvise and combine a couple of things that other people had found successful. This is exactly what I did: I renamed my Doom 3 directory to Doom3. Installed the torrent version of TDM and installed the 1.3.1.1304 patch. Launched TDM but didn't install the training mission nor any other mission instead I went directly into the "Settings" and changed my video settings. I then quit the game completely and then relaunched TDM and that's when I encountered the Black Screen so I quit the game (Alt+F4). I then went into my darkmod folder and deleted the "gamex86.dll" file and the "doomconfig.cfg" file. Launched TDM again and it worked fine. Note: I'm not sure if renaming my Doom 3 directory to Doom3 really helped but I noticed that someone else had tried this and I noticed that some of the documentation referenced Doom3 not Doom 3. Additionally, I didn't install the training mission or any other mission because on a previous attempt to fix the Black Screen problem I had installed the training mission to initiate the Black Screen and then I ended up having to delete the training mission and any files associated with that mission in order to get TDM to work. I just found it was simpler to initiate the Black Screen by going directly into the "Settings" and making some video changes. I'd hazard a guess that you could fix the Black Screen problem by just going in and deleting the "gamex86.dll" file and the "doomconfig.cfg" file from your darkmod folder but I'm too tired of messing around with this thing to test out that theory. I hope this information is helpful to someone.
  13. Die Frage ist nur, wo willst du so einen Poll aufsetzen? Hier sind ja scheinbar nicht so viele Deutsche, sonst wäre hier in dem thread vermutlich mehr los. Würd's daher mal auf dem deutschen TTLG probieren.
  14. Actually, that is not a bad idea Could you please post a thread in the appropriate forum? None of the tools under linux could display the compression of a TGA file (identify comes close but on test images always says "Compression: None"). So I wrote that little script according to Wikipedia specs: #!/usr/bin/perl -w use strict; my $name = shift; # read in first 4 bytes open (my $FILE, '<', $name) or die ("cannot read $name: $!"); binmode $FILE; my $data; read($FILE,$data,4); close $FILE; my $RLE = ord(substr($data,2)) & 0x08; print "Warning RLE encoded: $name\n" if $RLE; Then I did run it like so find -name "*local.tga" -print0 |xargs -0 -L 1 ./rle.pl |wc (find -print 0 prints all files zero-terminated, xargs -L 1 calls rle.pl for each one) and it produced 160 (or in other words, we have 160 RLE compressed normalmaps). Oops. Running it on all TGA files in the repository gives 350 as result. Oops.
  15. Hm, I think I could do this with a script here. We should discuss this internally, because recompressing them also means we need to ship them again. Is there already an internal thread?
  16. Now that the topic has come up in another thread, I checked if all the normalmaps in TDM are actually uncompressed (RLE disabled) and I discovered that very many (!!) of them have RLE enabled. Since there are so many, the easiest and quickest way to fix this would probably be if someone with access to the svn performed a "batch-conversion" with all images directly on the server. Simply open every file and save it in its place as TGA without RLE. Might mess up the filerevisions of the textures that weren't compressed though. In a similar fashion RLE could be enabled on all TGAs in the hires repository, when you're at it anyway, to make some diskspace.
  17. Well, if nobody filed a tracker entry for this, the SVN logs or the original (internal) thread are the only way to find out.
  18. I was just going off of this... not the same FM but... anyway I saw you'd come across a clue in that other thread; thought that had maybe resolved it, so I decided not to actually check by going into the mission, but I will now and report back.
  19. The best solution is the one that works. Seriously, I don't understand your question. You said you've already tried all the solutions presented in this thread and none of them worked for you. What difference does it make which one we think is "best" (assuming it were even possible to determine that)?
  20. I disagree, I think it is the same problem. Just because people are finding different solutions to the problem it doesn't mean that it's not just one problem with a few different solutions to fix that one problem. I do research for a living and I often find there can be numerous ways to a problem but usually there is an easy way to fix the problem and many hard ways to fix the same problem. Yes, I have run TDM without any other Doom 3 Mods installed and still had the same Black Screen problem. I also completely uninstalled Doom 3, patched it, and installed TDM but I still got the Black Screen. Why don't you just tell me what you think is the best solution to this problem? Of all the solutions posted in this thread which one seems like the best solution? I assume with your knowledge you can easily weed out the good ideas from the bad.
  21. Thanks Myagi for the suggestion. Were you also experiencing the Black Screen bug and did this fix your problem? It seems like there are a lot of people experiencing this same Black Screen problem. There is a lot of speculation and a bunch of different ideas but does anyone have a definitive solution to this problem? Again, we all seem to be describing the exact same problem so it seems fair to think that there should just be one solution to this problem. I've tried the solutions listed in this thread but haven't been able to get TDM running. I might have missed something so is there one solution listed here that really should work?
  22. Triplepost tzzz! Well, we won't have to kill them, if somebody impartial opened a thread like that as a general discussion with no link to TDM whatsoever. But then again, your volumelever option seems fine to me. Edit: Quadruple post even!!
  23. Question: Does this mean that you have a lot of details already nailed down that you just have to decide how or when to add to the wiki? Or that this is stuff you are deciding what topics next to better flesh out in order to add it to the wiki? I've been trying for a couple hours now to find a concise approach to this topic. I still don't know that I've found one, but I think we can make an overly broad categorization into: 1) authors who overtly intend to create something completely original using these tools and 2) authors who overtly intend to create something in line with the team's concept of The Dark Mod universe. We're obviously not talking about the first group, at all. So to echo the OP, what group 2 is wanting is a Dark Mod universe identity to link up with or emulate. That much, I think, is understood. I will try to make my points by example. To the effect of having a great deal of "canonization," it would depend on what we mean by that really. Example: The Lord Mayor of Bridgeport is Brodie Macrae. The Lord Mayor of Bridgeport is John Jacob Jingleheimer-Schmitt. I don't see any reason why both of those statements can't be true for separate FMs, even ones that are supposed to take place at the same time; I don't see something like this as a problem. But that there is a Lord Mayor of Bridgeport, rather than a King or President of Bridgeport is what's important... something that ought to be "canonized," so to speak. That's the sort of thing I'm talking about. I guess my point is that I actually would like to see more "canon" in the wiki, but static facts that we can refer to, not static characters. I think what people are really wanting is a more coherent framework on which to hang their characters. And we do have a good bit of that already, but perhaps not what a person might specifically be looking for in a given story that's being worked on. By way of another example: Let's say that I have a villainous City Councilman that I want to, by devious means, work his way into the office of Lord Mayor. He has to get elected somehow; I remember that much, but here I might turn to the wiki to find answers to some further questions. Who gets to vote? "aldermen" Ok, cool. How many aldermen are there? What's the difference between an alderman and a regular councilman? How do the aldermen become aldermen? How many total Councilmen are there? How do they vote? Do they need a simple majority? Two-thirds? Unanimous? Do the candidates even have to be Councilmen to begin with? And so on; the possible questions are endless. The point being these are some of the things that must be dealt with before I conceive how this character is going to bring his plan to fruition, i.e. How many bribes, for example, will be enough to win? Now, I'm not suggesting that the team even have or provide answers to any or all of these questions, but I do want to highlight a potential issue with having a wiki outlining possible answers to these questions. Continuing with the above scenario, I choose all of the answers to those questions, make my FM, release it, and later someone else makes a different scenario, but referencing the same types of questions with completely different answers and this second set of answers is what goes into the wiki. Being someone who specifically intends for my mission to align with the teams vision from the start, I might be a little put off by this. Wah, wah, tough cookies, right? Eh, I believe it is a legitimate concern. Again, I don't think it's at all fair to expect the team to have all of our answers immediately, and I don't think it would actually require a campaign or even a small series to accomplish this. I think it is entirely possible that as a community we can devise a list of topics that we'd like clarification on in order to adhere to the team's version of The Dark Mod universe and perhaps start a thread dedicated to it, where we ask questions, discuss possible answers, and most importantly get feedback from the team, i.e. "the answer is X, Y, or Z", "yes/no that fits/doesn't fit" or "we haven't worked that out enough yet. Stay tuned and we're happy to hear suggestions." This way, I think, current non-team mappers/storytellers have an outlet to ask the questions they believe are pertinent to their missions as they crop up, get some answers, and the team doesn't have to deal with what may be sort of a "where to begin?" feeling, to address them in the order presented or an order they see fit. There should be some way to delineate what is or isn't an appropriate topic for wikifying, though I'm not sure how to go about articulating that, but I would suggest at least this much as a guideline for us: Make your questions specific. Examples: Vague question: What are the Builders like? Answer: Read the wiki on it. Inappropriate question: Who is the Archbishop of Bridgeport? Answer: Who do you want it to be? Specific question: What is the ranking system in the City Watch? Does that make sense? Does this sound like something that people would like to participate in? And does this sound like something that the team would like to consider? Is this all crazygonuts insane and I'm overanalyzing?
  24. Late in the blackness of night, my mind, wandering from the task at hand, turned to my love of old, and a pang of rememberance gripped my soul. How I did long for sight of my beloved. As I sat musing thus, an inspiration fell upon me! I would seek news of her to fuel my reminiscent thoughts. When lurking in forums of old turned my nocturnal wanderings to my favourite engine for search, my heart gave a leap at what I did find. Hark! How the all-seeing eye of google doth provide! For there, before my sleep weary eyes, a most wonderous piece of news my gaze did light upon. The Dark Mod, of whose prophesied fame I had read long ago, had grown in beauty and grandeur. And now, before me on this fateful night, I beheld my beloved, as though she were born anew! Dressed all in the fineries of DooM III, she was verily transformed beyond all mine imagining. With tears, wetting my cheeks, as I did gaze upon her, I cried aloud, "Oh! My beloved! How thou hast changed! No longer art thou the low polygon creation of Looking Glass yore. Thou hast ceased from thy whoredoms and slavery to the evil Man Eidos and his treacherous mercerneries of Storming Ions. They who defilest thy bed with Deadly Shadows. Thou art transformed! And lo, behold thy texturing, thy lighting, thy models, and thy normal mapping. Harken to thy ambient music, thy sweet ambience, oh my love! Yes, thou art become a thing of such beauty. Joy in thine re-birth!" I remember thee as thou wert, before that vile toad took thee. I remember the nights long past, we in the intimacy of my solitude. I played thee as only I knew thou desired, revelling in thy foreboding depths, drinking in thy beauty. Oh my love! I remember thy secrets. How I long for thy mysterious touch! Come, my love! Play with me. All is not lost. Nay, all has been regained! Ok, I read briefly about the Dark Mod about a year ago, but as I haven't done much game-playing in the past year, I lost sight it altogether. Tonight, though, I had a sudden inspiration, and after viewing thedarkmod.com, I was blown away. This little bit of pretentious bullshit is the resulting heart-felt awe at what's being done--I couldn't stop it! And yeah, I DO realize that it sounds a bit like masturbation, but hey! It's a single player game, no? Looking good, Dark Mod team! Oh and if you're ever interested, I might be able to provide you with some in-game texts
  25. hehe.. You guys have put me down, when I suggested that audio comments as clues in the "unopenable doors"-thread! But anyhow, I still think they will greatly add to the game. But that also means, there is only one hero. If a mapper/designer has his own ideas, he must record his own voice-files To the topic: I guess, having no "official" campaign is a problem. A story lives with the strong characters. But inventing those characters into the void can be hard and spawns a lot sub-universes. So, maybe there could be some official top-people (chief of the inventors, high priest of the builders ...) and some informations, that make them suspicious or somehow interesting. Mappers could then refer to them in their missions.
