  1. Well, that's propaganda for you. I've said it all along, that you should not follow that fanboyism and stand up for your rights. Most people don't. As long as somebody is carrying the stick with the carrot in front of them they will follow.
  2. Sorry, back to work, hadn't had time to post. First, don't be suprised if you see that staircase in ALOT of FM's. Seriously, this is the type of thing that you absolutely COULDN'T pull off in Dromed (sorry bout caps). People will see it and get excited. Also, most objects that do get maybe by authors won't be that complex, so if someone needs a grand staircase they'd probably rather use that one than make one or find somone to make one. I'd include it under arch /stairs /climable(?) for ladders /roofs /buildings I also have added several staircase models and plan to do more variations. Containers /chests /jewel boxes (maybe just use chests) These are important items that people will want to use frequently/find easily. Only 3 or 4 but I intend to do more. Also seperates them from less important, non-usable 'containers' such as crates and barrels. I'd almost redo decorative all together. Decorative /paintings /banners /pots or vases, probably vases (as pots would be thought of as metal kitchen pots) /statues furniture /hutches (?) for all cabinet type models loot /jewelry /special (things like statuettes) mechanical /machines /switches-levers-buttons(?) Gizmos? I think we should get rid of misc all together, to vague. The rope can go in nautical, ink&quill in household(?) Household this was a thief folder, it contained kitchen, books, personal items, ect... Could be very useful for personal items and random household stuff that can't be placed anywhere else. I'd probably move brooms, mops, buckets ect into household/cleaning (instead of tools) tools I have already added laboratory, only has t vials now but I plan on alot more stuff (really an inventors folder) /mage equip(?) /magic tools? weapons My thoughts for now...

    Gas Bot

This isn't a gas bot, I just had this guy floating around in my head this morning. This would be more of a sentry bot or something of that sort. I could probably cut into other parts of the sphere and add gas/arrow launching mechanisms...but i just wanted to post it to get more ideas out there.
  4. It can work for some games, MMO games for example, where there is no real stopping point. I saw an interview for WoW where they talked about building one huge level that maybe only 1% of users would ever reach. And the interviewer asked what's the point, and they gave a similar reply ... it's something to aspire to, and it rewards the people that have really stuck to it, and it keeps people knowing there's a much bigger world out there they haven't seen yet, so they keep subscribing. But I don't think WoW is the kind of game Oddity had in mind ... since it's not really the difficulty that's stopping you, just the experience level, which is basically a transparent cover for how long you've played (i.e., how much subscription fee you've paid), which sort of taints the whole idea.
  5. Thanks for the comments. You're right about the textures--they're just using generic metal and wood textures right now. The metal is actually pretty scratched up, but you can't see that until you get closer--maybe it needs to be brought out more. It will be extremely easy to make lots of skins for these, including rusted versions. I'll post the skins when I'm finished with the rest of the models. @Spar: You're right about that one poly catching more light than it should--I can't figure out what's causing that yet.
  6. I think people should find this out on their own. Or at least, if such a video is made, it should be long after release.
  7. Hm, I have to check that again in Linux tonight. I'll post back here what I find.

I was not talking about a dealyed start, rather about an offset where they start from. So you can assign it to a number of candles, and they would all start at the same time, but at a different startingpoint. If you look long enough you would still recognize the pattern, probably, but it wouldn't be so obvious.
  9. I don't think that people would put real pillows into a cell, but a person would certainly put some straw together to have a support for the head. I think this is only natural. Especially if you have to spend a long time there. Well, maybe not, I don't know, but when I don't get a pillow, I take whatever I find and prop it up instead.
  10. Have you tried exchanging the OGG references with something else? Maybe the sounds are too long? Just wildly guessing of course.
  11. Well, they aren't really being paid for their skills per se, not in absolute terms. They're getting paid for the amount of fans they can draw, and the market involved in that (ticket sales, tv commercial advertising). Any individual or group whose combined talents can draw 10s of millions of people to pay attention for literally hours in a single night, really doesn't matter what the talent is ... throwing a ball, punching another man, strumming a guitar, luke-warm acting and a few dumb jokes, or how good it is in absolute terms ... they are the draw in relative terms (which of course, brings talent back in through the back door, if the fans are that discerning about it, at least), so the market says they deserve a big share, and even then they often don't get the lion's share. Their talents are almost uniquely bringing in 10s of millions of dollars a night from a very passionate crowd, but they don't get the biggest share ... it goes to the managers. Some might say they are actually being shortchanged. It's hard to argue they're overpaid, at least, since one punchline of the history of the free market is that the pressure is to consistently devalue the contribution of labor. If there's unfairness, it's not about the market, or the talent/salary relationship, it's why individuals in our culture choose to give things like ball throwing, man punching, guitar strumming, and dumb joke telling so much of their time and attention. And I have a sneaky suspicion that, at least in its modern mega-stadium/national t.v. form, it's something that's been cultivated and created with a lot of money over a long time, to create an self-reinforcing expectation that we should be. Or something.
  12. Ah, ok. I was just about to post the resolution for your problem. Glad to hear you've got it working.
  13. Sorry, if I confused you about the Instances. It's easy to get lost in the scenegraph, speaking from my own experience. I only recently wrapped my head about the inner workings and I'm still not entirely enlightened about a few things. The scenegraph consists of scene::Nodes, which build up a tree. In theory, each node can have one or more child nodes. The topmost node is called the scenegraph root. There are several scene::Node classes in DarkRadiant, each with a different set of properties. RootNode (represents the scenegraph root) BrushNode PatchNode Doom3GroupNode (the most complex of these all) EclassModelNode GenericEntityNode LightNode MD5ModelNode PicoModelNode The Doom3GroupNode, EclassModelNode, GenericEntityNode and LightNode are Entities. They can have spawnargs (key/value pairs). To recognise a node as Entity, call Node_getEntity() or Node_isEntity(). This will try to cast the INodePtr onto an Entity*. An Instance is not a path, but an instance has a path. The path is used to lookup the instance in the scenegraph, it's some sort of unique ID. Every node needs a path before it can be instantiated. (I'm just realizing, that I don't explain that very well here, so hopefully I'm not confusing you even more. Sorry about that. ) Forget the bit about STRING_CONSTANT, this is mostly legacy stuff and I'm almost sure we can remove that. It was used to implement a home-grown type-cast system similar to C++'s dynamic_cast. I will implement that function, I'll post back here when it's done.
  14. Much better. The brick texture normalmap is deeper now which is good. I wonder if the mortar could be a bit darker in the diffusemap so that the depth is better pronounced, but I'm not sure if this a good idea. I'm basically off to work now, could you prepare some screenshots and post them here, so that others can voice their opinions too without having to download the package? Just a room with two light sources would do the trick.
  15. Is there an option for "Most Pointlesss Post of the Year" ?
  16. What resolution are these images? Can you post the diffuse and bumpmaps as well? It's a lot easier to judge the quality of the texture this way.
  17. Well, jhook didn't ever type speedtree, instead speetree was typed. Which I took for a misprint of special fx tree. Dram did get particle leaves working on the trees and the trees are going to be updated to skeletal models with particle leaves as far as I'm aware. Everyone seemed to think they look better apart from the minor drawback of weird fx when standing under the tree and spinning. (who's gonna do that on purpose though) I've actually never heard the term speed tree, but from jhooks post assumed he meant trees like Oblivion, that's what the new trees are like.

    Come again?

Exactly, at least drug dealers only try to keep you alive long enough to make some money out of your suffering, not just shoot you dead on sight.
  19. And lots of really annoying post-production effects.
  20. Yesterday I was at McDonalds after many months avoiding it. I had to go, because my daughter got a good grade, and we promised her, so we had to go. I must say I don't like the food there at all. Either it got worse, or my taste changed, because I remember that I enjoyed at least some of it a few years ago. Anyway, maybe I'm too old nowadays, because I ordered a "regular" Royal. The waiter looked at me as if I were dumb and asked several times if I wanted a Royal TS (which is the same but with additional salad) and I said, no, I want a regular one. After several tries she finally manmaged to remember that there are indeed two types, one with cheese and one with salad, so I finally got what I wanted. To make it even worse, my smaller daughter decided in the meantime that she wanted a burger instead of chicken, but my wife stopped me from trying to explaining this to the waiter as well as it already took so long to get what we wanted. It shouldn't have been a problem to change that, because she hadn't had prepared it yet, but I guess it was safer to not even trying it. I already hate it, when I go to such a "restaurant" and see the blank look when I start to order. They have some expectations, and if you order differently (no pommes no menu, just a burger and some coke), then they get out of focus and their brain no longer works. You can really start seeing the smoke billowing out of their heads, when their CPU starts to get overloading when they try to process such a request.
  21. Yeah, I was surprised about this. I knew that hockey is tough, but talking to some of the guys, it seems as if they kind of think that in hockey you are supposed to hurt your opponent, as long as you can get away with it. Since I don't know much about the rules of hockey, I have to get used to it. In my first training session, I always thought that, if somebody has the puck, and another one is already attacking him, you are not allowed to interfere. I think in soccer this would be a foul, right? In hockey it's ok, so next time I can join in the bulk.
  22. OK, I can provide some evidence of Thief 3 and Thief 2 missions though neither are entirely completed. I'm also close to completing a small Doom 3 mission. Where should I post files and images? Edit: Oh, I probably should mention the fact that from the 15th July to the 15th August i'll be away (in Peru!) which gives me about 2 1/2 weeks when I can work pretty much 24/7. After Peru, with the exception of about 5 days at the end of August, i'll have about 3 years to work on maps (which i'm sure will suffice), possibly longer if I stay on at Uni for longer. Anyway I hope none of the above will be an issue. The previous question still stands..
  23. Because the source engine was ill suited to this type of mod and would require a lot more modifications make it suitable. The Doom 3 engine was better equipped to provide a Thief life setting than Source. The doom 3 engine will also be open source long before Source.
  24. I don't think Oddity's talking about cracking the encryption of a stored password which the hacker has access to - but just brute guessing at a password input by trying every combination? If so, the combinations of "24 characters long and just random letters, digits and symbols." is so colossal you would not even be close if you had started at the big bang. Let's say all 26 letters in upper or lower plus digits plus common symbols - say a 100 characters. That's 24 x 100 x 99 x 98 x 97 x 96 etc.etc.. Doesn't sound much? Just start in with a calculator and see how far you get before it breaks down. Mine stopped after I reached only 95 and a total over 20 billion. Push it a bit further in your head. The 90's are almost a hundred as a rough... 2000 billion, 200,000 billion, etc.. Furthermore, this presupposes that the input will even allow you to try a million times a second. Ophcrack sounds like it might shorten the time using average human choices to limit its guesses - I mean the way in which we humans tend to create passwords probably has common patterns even when inventing words - but a totally random password is a totally random password and I don't see how any software can shorten the combinations. If it succeeds 99.9% of the time it suggests most of us are not using quality passwords.

    Gas Bot

Thanks for the comments, i started drawing some concepts that had animal heads attached to the bots, but they all look kind of awkward. Sticking an organic shape like that on a bulky metal box just doesn't fit too well...i'll keep working with it though and post the progress. Here's another concept for one of the gas bots, i thought it would be cool to be sneaking through a dark hall and seeing this green glow coming from around the corner, alerting our player that one of these guys was coming close. Could the top of this bot be made to shatter from an arrow/weapon impact? After that maybe the bot would go into a rage and charge towards the player, no longer able to hurl these gas cannisters from a distance.
