[solved] Cannot get TDM to work.

Tried to resurrect this mod on my nice new reformatted hdd,

Installed Doom 3 as per instructions in C:/Games/Doom3 (Doom 3 game is a proper game in its box, Activision, ID etc etc.3 cds legit key code on back of manual etc, etc)

Patched said game to the prerequisite patch which immediately told me that it could not identify the copy of doom3...major headache...got latest Doom3 patch from Activision and patched it.

Made the darkmod folder within the Doom3 folder.

Downloaded the updater and ran it from within the darkmod folder.

Created a shortcut to the Darmod.exe so I can access it from my desktop.

Ran Darkmod, tried to run the trainer mission and.....

I have tried patching the Doom3 exe with the 4GB memory patch...no luck just this sodding malloc error on every downloaded mission.

Any ideas please.

That's bizarre.

 

Can you bring down the D3 console when you start TDM and make sure image_usecompression is set to 1 and image_usenormalcompression is set to 2? Patching the D3 exe with the 4GB patch wouldn't help you anymore since TDM doesn't use the D3.exe at all anymore. I thought we might have already included that 4GB patch in the TDM exe already, but perhaps not.

What's up with these constant malloc problems? It is as if everyone is suddenly having those. Me included! Never had those before, but got my first with the updated training mission. It did go away by rebooting though.

Try adding r_vertexBufferMegs "8" and com_videoRAM "your video cards ram" and image_preload "0" to your Darkmod.cfg. This has solved most of my issues...

Hi, thanking you for trying to help.

Doom3 console...how do I enable it, usually in other games like wolfenstein you enable it in the settings and call it up through the tilde key...am at a loss how to enable or call it up in Doom3.

The problem would be greatly reduced if we use compressed normalmaps. The current TDM process uses a lot of memory, and while it might be possible to reduce some of that by saving memory in some other places, the biggest offender are the textures that are stored in main memory AND GPU memory.

 

So the options here are either optimize the maps (don't use that many textures), or use compressed normal maps. That alone reduced the memory footprint by 25%I think, so it would solve the issue.

 

The real fix is to make TDM a 64 bit executable, then it can address more than 4 Gbyte and thus use more than 2 (or 3) GByte on Windows. Without that, we will run into the same issue again when the FMs get bigger and use again more textures. (We are not seeing the same failures on Linux because there 32 bit processes can use 3 Gbyte vs. 2 GByte by default on Windows, but the issue is there, too.)

I'm not sure this problem is solved by the 4GB patch

 

I did not apply this patch to the darkmod.exe and havn't had this malloc error

also the com_setvideoRam command shouldn't solve anything,

this was also not set by me and the only thing that happened was that doom3 suggested I had only 64 mb videoram, that's it

and now that I turned it on the only difference I notice is, that the maps are loading a bit faster (I guess that's because my video ram is faster then my main ram)

 

what really changed with 1.08 is, that I'm now able to play TDM under windows, with 1.07 I only had about 10-15 FPS even on tiny maps

(I turned off Catalyst A.I. and followed the other hints, but they never worked for me)

I played under Linux so far and the only difference there was that I used a different graphics driver

 

so I would guess that this is more of an driver issue than a memory problem (even though the malloc failure points to the latter)

I can see the video entry is doubled up, I guess the 128 one is the original...I'll remove it and see if it helps thanks.

I have updated the radeon video drivers to 10.2...still no joy.

No, that doesn't work either.

I tried a mission by Melan..."fiasco on fauchard street"....it shows the title page/picture with the "By Melan", the loading bar at the bottom completes and then it hangs on "starting mission please wait" after about 2 minutes there are some squiggly lines come up and it crashes to desktop with the malloc failure.

Oh woe is me.

Ravenhook, sorry to hear about your problems :(

 

How much memory does your system have? (And how much GPU memory does it actually have?)

 

Can you close some programs before running TDM? Maybe your antivirus or whatever? Also how much swap (pagefile) do you have configured, can you increase this value?

 

What you can also try is image downsizing (it tells TDM to scale every texture over a certain size down to a smaller size).

 

Does it work if you f.i. set:

(The latter migght need 512 to not look overly blurry in game).

Hi Tels, my computer has 8GB DDR2 Ram fitted although Windows XP can only use 4GB, my processor is a pentium4 3.0GHZ Core 2 Quad.

The GPU is 256Mb

Just reset virtual memory to see how that does.

The training mission that ships with the darkmod still crashes with our malloc friend, but I notice that there is another one in the downloads section so I will try that one.

Fauchard seems to be the only mission that works...I have to press the right mouse button (attack) to start and away it goes.

Anything else loads, it says in white letters "game loaded please wait" hangs like that for a while and mallocs its way to desktop.

Weird and very frustrating.

Delete both instance of the training mission folders from the fms folder and then re-run tdm-update. This will make sure you have the latest version.

Removed the training mission, ran updater again...still crash to desktop.

Seriously thinking of giving up...as I had it running perfectly some months before, the only thing that I can think is that windows bloody updater has updated service pack 3 with some nonsense that is conflicting with something or another and as microsoft have announced that they will soon no longer support XP (thanks very much you greedy bstd's) it will have to wait until I can afford windows 7 by which time they will no doubt have invented "fluid operating system" that uses heavy water or some such crap and windows 7 will be obsolete.

I'm a little miffed with the bread heads at microsoft as you might have noticed as this is not the first time that they have screwed up some bloody good games.

Checked the compatibility options in the darkmod's exe properties and the only ones showing are for....

windows 95

windows 98/me

windows nt 4 (service pack 5)

windows 2000

..there is no option for xp service pack 3 as I guess the machine assumes that as it's the dominant part of the operating system already there's no need to change it.

Apologies for my rant yesterday but microsoft's eagerness to dump it's previous customers really rankles me.

      Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh?
