About the tweaks

*Remember to disable the mouse smoothing in the ThiefInput.ini if you dislike the filtering

*Disable the VSync and force it with the Scanline Sync of RTSS+Afterburner (now the game is silky smoooth)

Hello everyone,

After all those years... back with Garett (Thief 2014) with nVidia 3D Vision

I'm trying to use 3D Fix Manager to create a profile to activate the '3D Depth Hack' but it doesn't work...

The profile is created and recognized : Unreal Engine 3/3D Direct mode On/DirectX 10 or 11/3D Depth Hack : Override global Setting x2
I activated the wrapper 3dmigoto (DirectX 11) 1.3.16 (32 Bits) and created a Hotkey to toggle the 3D depth to 1 with the Tab key (to test the fix) but nothing si working.

Here is my config:

Windows 7 64 bits

nVidia drivers tested : 387.92 / 425.31

Thief 1.4 (Steam ID 239160) tested in 32 and 64 bits

Can somebody help me ?

Many thanks !

  • Disable in-game fog -
    • Go to Thief\ThiefGame\Config ThiefGame.ini and then find [Engine.WorldInfo] andgo to line 66
    • And then change mbEnable=TRUE to mbEnable=FALSE and then save the file as read only.

Your advice causes new bugs...  For example, in the first Сutscene of the game, the smoke from the pipes does not become realistic.

The right Solution:

[Engine.WorldInfo]

DefaultPostProcessSettings=(mSSAO=(mbEnable=TRUE, mIntensity=1.0), mWind=(mbEnable=TRUE, mbAffectVelocity=TRUE, mVelocity=(X=25, Y=10, Z=10)), mFog=(mbEnable=TRUE, mbEnableOutdoor=FALSE, mbEnableColor=TRUE, mOutdoorTex1=LA_000_Core_Fog.Layer01, mOutdoorTex2=LA_000_Core_Fog.Layer01, mOutdoorTex3=LA_000_Core_Fog.Layer01, mLayerOpacityCurve=PROG_3D_PostProcess.FogNearPlaneDensityCurve))

This needs to be done in two files: ThiefGame.ini and DefaultGame.ini

The fog is being removed in many places... It is not possible to completely disable fog in this game through the config

GOOD TWEAK!

Open Hex Editor. I recommend HxD. Find  thiefgame.u.

To disable shroud - Make a backup of thiefgame.u and then search (in Hex value) for:

    02 CD CC 4C 3F 36 CC 66 36 BC 00 01 9C DE F4 3E
    Replace with: 02 00 00 00 00 35 CC 66 36 BC 00 01 9C DE F4 3E

     to disable white flash :

    33 33 33 3F 36 18 4D 01 CD CC CC 3E 38 A9 4C C0
    Replace with: 33 33 33 3F 36 18 4D 01 00 00 00 00 38 A9 4C C0

Yes this worked chakkman thank you. Much better. 😃

So far I'm enjoying the game in a very Hitman Absolution type of way. The sound effects and sound design overall is simply unpresentable to me. Lack of footstep, nice pick up loot and and satisfying lock pick sound cues makes it hard for me to give the game more than a 6 out of 10. With good sounds this game could have been a 8 or 9.

Found a few more tweaks that supposedly improve the game:

To improve the quality of the game you can modify the BaseEngine.ini file located in \Steam\steamapps\common\Thief\Engine\Config changing the values written below:

[MemoryPools]
FLightPrimitiveInteractionInitialBlockSize=1024
FModShadowPrimitiveInteractionInitialBlockSize=1024

[SystemSettings]
...
DepthOfField=False
...
AllowImageReflections=True
AllowImageReflectionShadowing=True
SkeletalMeshLODBias=-1
ParticleLODBias=-1
...
MaxAnisotropy=16
...
MaxShadowResolution=2048
...
ResX=1920
ResY=1080
//or whatever res you will be using in gameplay
...
bEnableBranchingPCFShadows=True
...
bEnableForegroundSelfShadowing=True

I also disabled bloom via ini and looks much better.

Few pics of a Reshade Preset I've been working on. Changes the Silverish blue of the ambiance color to a more Gloomy Gold/Green ambient. Kind of HR piss effect.

LOL.

Recently I have reassessed the infamous "Gold Filter" of DXHR, thanks to enabling it in DC with this: CookiePLMonster/DXHRDC-GFX: A plugin for Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut, restoring the gold filter, post processing and shading from the original Deus Ex: Human Revolution (github.com)

It fixes the lighting system and the bad (really BAD) DC bloom too (you can force the original 2011 one)!

And just avoid the SSAO, it's terrible (temporally unstable) in the DC.

Without the Gold Filter the game really looks washed out (and see my avatar :D )

My issue with the Gold filter in HR is that overpowers all colors making the game monochromatic. These artistic liberties work on short games but in long games once the novelty wears down it could make the game feel monotone. Something similar happens in Thief 4. The art director made the textures almost colorless to add a bleak and sad effect to the game, cool but overtime the player might feel the game is dull and boring. Colors not only give look but also feel.

Bur regardless. Here's my attempt to Replicate the Gold Filter in Deus Ex Art Director's Cut 😝

The main problem of the art direction of T4 is that is *ONLY* that kind of dark (=the "gloom" fallen over the City), prologue apart.

Prologue atmosphere is just perfect

@Taquito TBH, I like the original Thief 4 screenshots better. Looks darker and more coherent. To each his own, of course.

I wasn't really thinking about cohesiveness. i was trying to give the game a more Golden touch like in DXHR. I'm using Cinetool Lut which has many options for color combination. Each one makes the game look and feel different and it's a great Reshade Tool.

I like the Transition from dusk to night in the Prologue and the fact that it didn't last long. Hiding and stealing during the day feels  weird to me. I couldn't digest Mankind Divided as much as I liked the Artistic touches for this reason. The Prague map felt so Arbitrary.

Found the White Flash Hex Value but not the one for the Shroud effect. I'm playing the Epic Version.

Disable Lens Flares  For those making their own with Reshad or just dislike the look.

Thief Game>Config>ThiefEngine.ini

Look under [SystemSettings]

LensFlares=True   to  LensFlares=False

      I posted about it before, but I think the default tdm logo video looks outdated. For a (i.m.o.) better looking version, you can download the pk4 attached to this post and plonk it in your tdm root folder. Every mission that starts with the tdm logo then starts with the better looking one. Try for example mission COS1 Pearls and Swine.

      I finished DOOM - The Dark Ages the other day. It is a decent shooter, but not as great as its predecessors, especially because of the soundtrack.
