Hello dear people of The Dark Mod

A question about the code of this lovely game.

Is every bits of The Dark Mod code open sourced? And under which license? If not all and every file, then which files are open and which not?

A question I could probably find out myself but if you want you may answer: what engine do you use and how easy is it for newcomers to start working on code, assets etc? Does it have to be done through the community or can we also work on our own - Is it allowed to just download/copy code and start creating things for myself?

And a side question: does the TDM community have a Discord server?

Thank you for clarifying.

Yours

mouser

Here are our license details:

https://github.com/fholger/thedarkmod/blob/master/LICENSE.txt

The code is all open source but is a mix of GPL and BSD licensing because 3rd party libraries and implementations have been integrated.

The Assets:

Unless explicitly stated otherwise, all maps, textures, models, def files, audio
assets, and all other non-software components that are distributed with The Dark Mod
are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0
Unported license, as specified at
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/legalcode

and described at http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/

( The exception being cgtextures as outlined in the License.txt above )

Please visit TDM's IndieDB site and help promote the mod:

(Yeah, shameless promotion... but traffic is traffic folks...)

In passing, since questions regarding the license of TDM's code and assets come back from time to time, wouldn't it be a good idea to pin this topic ? With a title that explicit, that would guarantee that anyone having the same question would find it very easily. :)

Perhaps adding an entry on The Dark Mod wiki, on the main page, specifically addressing this question, would be efficient too.

Get the game or its source code, and read the LICENSE file.

I hope it would become easier after we get a GitHub mirror 😞

Some more detail.

There are two main SVN repos: source code and assets.
Source code repo is open for reading to everyone.
Assets SVN is only open to team members, i.e. it is not public. However, you can use TDM installation instead (which players use for playing).

If you want to hack with the code, you should make sure you have source code and assets compatible with each other.
The easiest approach is to download source code archive for the last official release (2.09a) from website, and use it with TDM installation of that version.

When you get a hang of it, you can switch to more recent version (if you want) by taking the source code from public SVN and using latest dev build for assets.
Some detail about SVN + dev builds here:

In any case, you should start by reading compiling instructions, either on wiki or in source code SVN/archive.
The build is kept very simple, so I don't think you'll have any problems with it.

I posted about it before, but I think the default tdm logo video looks outdated. For a (i.m.o.) better looking version, you can download the pk4 attached to this post and plonk it in your tdm root folder. Every mission that starts with the tdm logo then starts with the better looking one. Try for example mission COS1 Pearls and Swine.

I finished DOOM - The Dark Ages the other day. It is a decent shooter, but not as great as its predecessors, especially because of the soundtrack.
