  1. If it were not compatible, you should be getting a black screen because nothing could be rendered without textures. But in practice, it does render, just with confused texture associations. It looks and feels very much like a bug, but unfortunately I don't (yet) have access to an AMD device myself, so it' very hard to debug...
  2. Addendum: if image_usePrecompressedTextures "0" -> BLACK SCREEN (game is working)
  3. Same problem (black screen on v2.09), same solution (setting r_glCoreProfile "0"). System specs:
  4. Hello all, I am trying to compile and play The Dark Mod under my platform (Gentoo Linux). After patching the patchable to make it compile, it turns out that no rendering is shown on screen at all: black screen (with resolution change), mouse is responsive and I can hear the reaction of the GUI to its movement (clicks and all); also the background music (soothing, charming, beautiful... but that you know already) cuddles my ears. I started the bisection of the code from version 2.05 (I think... it was r6753) to r7203. It took me a while (none of the commits compiles out of the box, and different ones require different patches), and in the end I found that r6834 works for me (at least the menu screen!), while r6835 does not any more (as above). I have the output to screen of two runs. In thedarkmod-r6834.txt, I started it with no arguments, and then quit. In thedarkmod-r6835.txt, I started it with no arguments, then I switched to a text console and killed it (because I could not see the GUI to quit). The only files that changed between the two runs are thedarkmod.x86, gamex86.so and tdm_game02.pk4. Any suggestion for me to have this work?
  5. _apitrace_record3.cmd works, but 1 and 2 result in the black screen.
  6. Ok, I'll try to get some more information, but that would need more complicated steps from you. 1) Run tdm_installer without any custom checks, and make sure it installs release209 properly. Do not use test/dev versions for this! 2) Delete "currentfm.txt" file in TDM installation directory (if it exists). 3) Download apitrace from this link. It is a 7z archive with a folder inside. Unpack the contents of the folder into "C:\apitrace". Make sure that path "C:\apitrace\bin\apitrace.exe" indeed points to the executable! 4) Download attached zip file. Unpack its contents into the root of your TDM installation directory. Make sure you see files like "_apitrace_record1.cmd" in the same directory where you see "TheDarkModx64.exe". 5) Action time Run "_apitrace_record1.cmd". It will start TDM game, and after a bit of time you will hear music. Now press Ctrl+Alt+Tilde (~) to open console. Type "condump 1" and hit Enter. Then exit game by pressing Alt+F4. Note that you'll have to do it blind, so verify that both "1.txt" and "res1.trace" have been created in TDM directory. 6) Repeat point 5, but now run "_apitrace_record2.cmd" and execute "condump 2". 7) Repeat point 5, but now run "_apitrace_record3.cmd" and execute "condump 3". 8|) Take files "1.txt", "2.txt", "3.txt", "res1.trace", "res2.trace", "res3.trace" in TDM installation directory, and pack them all into 7z/zip archive. Upload the archive somewhere and share it for download. P.S. And if you start seeing the menu instead of black screen in any of the runs, of course report it 209_blackmenu_apitrace.zip
  7. test15973-8793 and test15973-8795 both result in the black screen no matter if it's seta r_useNewBackend "1" or seta r_useNewBackend "0".
  8. I have a Radeon HD 6450 graphics card. test15973-8778 works but test15973-8797 starts with the black screen.
  9. @Jedi_Wannabe, "dev15976-8815" is the very first dev build. Are you sure 'dev15976-8815' gives you black screen but release208 works properly? I hope you do not restore config file when switching versions?
  10. Downloaded 2.07 update, neither the x64 launcher nor the normal x32 launcher work. The x64 launcher only gives me a black screen and then goes back to desktop. The usual x32 launcher gets me a black screen with the TDM mouse in the center and nothing more, if I click around the game goes into not responding mode and crashes as well. Tried deleting and redownloading the game but still doesn't work. Is the forum working correctly? Can't upload any files from my game directory, but I can upload the DxDiag file (it says "Error You aren't permitted to upload this kind of a file"). DxDiag_laptop.txt
  11. I'm noting other problems which I'll post issues for once we're up and running again. One of those is related to this one: textures for some non-frobable objects (worldspawn and func_statics) aren't being painted. The same textures will be missing through several dmaps, then suddenly they appear again, and different textures go away. It's as if a) the texture can't be found (though other surfaces with the same texture are fine) or b) the surface is behaving as if no light--not even ambient--is touching it, so it's painted black. In favor of the "texture not being found" thought is that on one load the loading screen was black, as if it couldn't be found. There are no missing texture warnings. Will file an issue with examples when we're back online.
  12. Strange ... After trying to capture in-game screenshots for comparison between 2.06 and SVN, and taking Windows screen captures for comparison, the problem has morphed to: SVN is darker than 2.06, but the "nearly-all-black screen" condition that I saw has changed to a "noticeably darker, but not all-black" condition. Since I invoked SVN by accident while working with my WIP in 2.06, I'm willing to let this go until we get into 2.07 beta and see how other existing missions behave. Perhaps it was some unexplained momentary glitch on my end.
  13. Hi. I've been searching around for help and I've found some similar reports but no solutions. I downloaded TDM yesterday. First time I tried to run it: The game went into fullscreen mode, and my desktop (KDE) was "kind of" showing on the screen- most of the screen was black but a small section of my desktop was all zoomed in and distorted. I could hear the TDM menu options click as I hovered my mouse over them, but could not see any part of the main menu.Googled, someone said to change resolution in the config. So I set r_customWidth and r_customHeight (2560x1440). Saved the config and ran the game.. it worked! I could see the main menu, and everything seemed to be working. From here, I exited because I wasn't ready to play, just wanted to get it working. As soon as I exited, my desktop resolution changed to some ultra-low res zoomed in mode in 4:3 aspect ratio (I think). My desktop was being displayed letterboxed at like 320x240 and zoomed in, and I could pan around my desktop by moving the cursor to the edges. I had to reboot to fix this. Now when I try going into the game, I just get a black screen with a desktop cursor.. no main menu sounds and tilde->Exit doesn't work, I think at this point I was still interacting with the desktop, not the game. I don't think the game was actually even open.. it just jacks up my resolution and turns the screen black. Had to reboot again to fix it. I'm at a loss. I've found an old post where one of the devs said to set r_mode to -1, which I tried.. and nothing happens. The game opens and immediately exits. What do I have to do to get this game to actually run?
  14. I just installed tdm, and I clicked on the exe, when it loaded, the screen is all black, and what I assume is the main menu music is playing, with no video or graphics in the slightest. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
  15. A month later. TDM is still crashing for me. I updated again and at least the type of crash changed. Now the screen cycles through four brands of "black screen" (black, black-grey, black, black-grey) and then the game crashes with the same error message as before (in the above screenshot), except the grey part is only a smaller square in the corner. I'm down because I haven't been able to play lately.
  16. Presumably this part is the problem? If the lighting interaction shader cannot be compiled, a black screen is likely to result.
  17. Also, for some reason it often helps to delete darkmod.cfg after an update, so that you get a new one when you next start TDM. Worth keeping a backup of it in case that doesn't fix the black screen.
  18. Yes, try to update your video drivers. And if there is a darkmod.log in your darkmod folder, we would like to see it. Open the file with notepad and copy its content in this topic. in the following topics, you can find some other pointers: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/search/&q=black screen&quick=1&type=forums_topic&nodes=58
  19. I was finally able to fix my Black Screen problem. I had tried all the solutions listed in this thread but I still wasn't able to get TDM to work without the dreaded Black Screen so I decided to improvise and combine a couple of things that other people had found successful. This is exactly what I did: I renamed my Doom 3 directory to Doom3. Installed the torrent version of TDM and installed the 1.3.1.1304 patch. Launched TDM but didn't install the training mission nor any other mission instead I went directly into the "Settings" and changed my video settings. I then quit the game completely and then relaunched TDM and that's when I encountered the Black Screen so I quit the game (Alt+F4). I then went into my darkmod folder and deleted the "gamex86.dll" file and the "doomconfig.cfg" file. Launched TDM again and it worked fine. Note: I'm not sure if renaming my Doom 3 directory to Doom3 really helped but I noticed that someone else had tried this and I noticed that some of the documentation referenced Doom3 not Doom 3. Additionally, I didn't install the training mission or any other mission because on a previous attempt to fix the Black Screen problem I had installed the training mission to initiate the Black Screen and then I ended up having to delete the training mission and any files associated with that mission in order to get TDM to work. I just found it was simpler to initiate the Black Screen by going directly into the "Settings" and making some video changes. I'd hazard a guess that you could fix the Black Screen problem by just going in and deleting the "gamex86.dll" file and the "doomconfig.cfg" file from your darkmod folder but I'm too tired of messing around with this thing to test out that theory. I hope this information is helpful to someone.
  20. Nevermind, it's always the easiest solution that occurs to one last. I set the windows resolution to 1920x1080, which centers the screen on the 32:9 Samsung and TDM then is also centered with black bars.
  21. Black screen or black window? Perhaps a screenshot of the files in your tdm folder (detailed view with file sizes, etc)
  22. If so, then run the tdm-updater (and click "continue"), apostrophe. (because the updater checks the data for maingamedata-corruption. And if there corruption is detected, the updater downloads the original file) I thought that gray screens are opengl loadingscreens, so an opengl video-issue-thingy. -edit- But as a test I renamed tdm_gui01.pk4 to something else (simulating incomplete download). As result i got a black screen and a "invalid gui" error on top. and if i remove some binary codelines of the zip (simulating data corruption), i get a black screen. So i think still, its a video issue.
  23. Full screen. Just tried running in windowed by changing the Darkmod.cfg setting. Still showing black screen with TDM mouse. I've got this version originally by updating from 2.06 to 2.07. The result was the same as now. Then I deleted all files except fms folder and downloaded the updater again from www.thedarkmod.com There are no subdirectories except fms and screenshots (which I deleted when I reinstalled TDM so now I only have missionshots folder inside fms and no screenshots folder anymore). I'll try reinstalling again and report back. qqq.txt
  24. Thanks for that. Yeah I figured it was coming from the monitor, as if it can't display the output from the PC then it wouldn't be able to display any message from it too, but for those who just get a black screen & music this might help. And apologies for putting this thread in the wrong forum, thanks for shifting it, whoever it was
  25. Hi all, I just put the 64 bit version of TDM on my machine running Zorin 15.2, I figured it's based on Ubuntu so it should be OK When I ran thedarkmod.x64 I got the intro music playing & a black screen with a pop up saying - I couldn't stop TDM & had to blip the power button to get the system to shut down. So I dug around a bit on my old windows system that ran TDM on the same monitor & found the following lines in Darkmod.cfg seta r_customHeight "1080" seta r_customWidth "1920" on the Linux system they were seta r_customHeight "600" seta r_customWidth "800" So I changed the figures to match the old windows system & tried again & it worked the training mission loads nicely I couldn't find any setting for 60hz, but as it seems to work I'm fine So I'm posting this in case anyone else has a similar issue
