(Also can't wait!)

Looks like some of the shots have a nice stylized look to them. I think Guillermo Del Toro's touch (or sketches) wore-off on Mr. Jackson.

Great first trailer. I've been excited about this movie for awhile, although I'm worried they're watering down the story too much by splitting it into two chapters. Possible shameless money grab alert.

Also, hot Gandalf/Galadriel action, interesting, don't remember that from the book...!

Oh mah gawwwwd... so excited. This book is how i got into LoTR in the first place, it was my bedtime story my mom read to me every night when i was almost too young to remember. It was very calvin and hobbes-esque.

"what story do you want to hear tonight, dear?" "I WANT HAMSTER HUEY AND THE GOOEY KABLOOIE!!"

except i always wanted The Hobbit.

Also: I can't quite tell from the trailer, did they use the same actor for Gloin that played Gimli? It sortof looks like him, but I'm not really sure.

I expected to see a reply from you in this thread, being named Ungoliant and all... the one who hatched Shelob.

Hmmm... having recently finished the Song of Ice and Fire series, I've been wondering what to read next. Now I think I'll re-read The Hobbit and the LoTR series. I have a friend who has read them every winter, either to himself or to his kids, for 27 years in a row.

Also, I wonder if the Dwarves' songs are going to be done in a similar manner to those in the '70s animation (or all of the songs for that matter). The song Thorin started singing in the trailer is not that far off in style from the '70s animated version... mostly slower.

I really hope they find some way to work Tom Bombadil into either of these movies. His lighter tone and comical antics work well with this story and hopefully the trippy aspects

of his "born at the dawn of time" nature would be explored. I wouldn't mind AT ALL if the whole barrows sequence got moved into one of these films.

That's one of my beefs with the LOTR films, many of the Elf encounters are right where one could imagine a hallucination or dream. They happen late at night or after recovering from injury.

The experiences are evocative of a crazed tall tale from a delirious bard.

If they had blurred the line a little and made the visits to Rivendell and Lothlórien (etc) like dreams then nothing would be missing spiritually from the books. (Though Lothlórien was close... )

To my knowledge, the only director who has gotten the "I am inside a dream" feel right is David Lynch. So when I win the lotto, I'll have him re-film those scenes...

nbohr: RIght - considering the amount of weird invented / inflated stuff that was added - it's maddening that so much important stuff was taken away. Bombadil would be a welcome sight.

"No proposition Euclid wrote,

No formulae the text-books know,

Will turn the bullet from your coat,

Or ward the tulwar's downward blow

Strike hard who cares—shoot straight who can—

The odds are on the cheaper man."

It would be weird, yet interesting, to see Tom Bombadil worked into The Hobbit, even if just a momentary crossing of paths. But I don't recall Bilbo's journey taking the party near Tom's old forest, which Tom never leaves. So an encounter with him would be highly unlikely, if not impossible.

At least Beorn will be in the movie. When I was a kid (before reading the book) I never knew about Beorn since he was left out of the animated show which I was familiar with.

I am very much looking forward to the treetop rescue by the eagles (oh what shall we do with the funny little things?), the spiders of Mirkwood, the drunken Wood Elves (Legolas will be there, since that's his home), and the Battle of Five Armies.... not to mention Smaug!

It wouldn't be too hard to come up with an excuse to visit "The Old Forest"... it's right next to The Shire.

They could be instructed to pick-up the weapons in the Barrow-Downs then later lose them thus explaining why they were

missing in LOTR...

Get Peter Jackson on the phone.

We need to have a meeting...

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
