A Plea to Mission Authors

This is a pet peeve of mine, and you're certainly free to ignore it.

But it sure would make my Developer's life easier if y'all would name your map file something close to what you call your mission.

It drives me nuts when I have to hunt down a mission problem and I can't quickly figure out which map file I should be looking at. (I keep a folder full of just the *.map files for quick reference.)

For example, here are maps that make my work easy:

"Business as Usual" -> business.map

"TDM Training Mission" -> training_mission.map

"Somewhere Above the City" -> somewhere.map

And here are maps that make my work ... um ... not so easy:

"Old Habits" -> mc.map

"Sneak and Destroy" -> kneipe24.map

"St. Alban's Cathedral" -> stac.map (close, but not obvious)

As I said, your artist's license allows you to name your map any frackin' thing you want, but it would help me if it held some clue as to which mission it belonged to.

Thanks.

Yes, I got burned by "mc.pk4" as well. I've had a few times where I had to go look up the download links to figure out which .pk4 to open. Though I probably am guilty of naming my map file itself poorly.

well I just keep my accountant mission as a.map until it's done then I will rename it to theaccountant.map because typing dmap a/a map a/a is much easier :)

:blush: Sorry. Intentionally the mission was designed to be a castle which you enter through a mine, so mc stands for mine castle. I never changed that name afterwards as I thought it doesn't matter. I'll change that for the 2.0 pk4.

"Sneak and Destroy" -> kneipe24.map

Kneipe is the german word for pub. So it makes sense for a german person ;)

      Has anyone had any luck with textures from Polyhaven? Their OpenEXR normal maps seem too washed out and give incorrect shading in the engine.

      I tried to upscale the TDM logo video. First try:

      briefing_video.mp4 You can test it ingame by making a copy of the core tdm_gui.mtr and place it in your-tdm-root/materials/ , then edit line 249 of that file into the location where you placed the new briefing.mp4 file.
      What I did was I extracted all the image files, then used Upscayl to upscale the images using General photo (Real-Esrgan) upscale setting and then turn it back into a video.
      I might have to crop it a bit, the logo looks smaller on screen (or maybe it's actually better this way?). My video editor turned it into a 16:9 video, which I think overal looks better than 1:1 video of original.

      Trying to be productive on my down-time before Capcom releases Akuma and my son is constantly on my PC playing Street Fighter...

      Finally got round to publishing a tutorial on baking normal maps in Blender, since most of the ones we have are inaccessible or years out of date.

      The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.
