Hot Chips 2016: NVIDIA Discloses Tegra Parker Details

2160p encode... automotive rated SoC? I guess they mean that your NVIDIA Tegra Parker SoC won't crash while your driverless car is on the go and kill you. Supposedly the Nintendo NX will use some kind of Tegra Parker SoC.

What you need to look for is a graph that show latency and the 99th percentile, you want the to get the card that can keep a better average framerate with a low as possible the amount of min frame rate spikes.

But if history holds tru then nVidia will be better, but when the AMD card can be found for £50 cheaper than its up to you. but its looking like (see links below) that AMD is getting great max frame rate (like sequential reads on an SSD) but the min frame rate (like 4k QD1 reads) is pants in Vulkan compared to openGL

nVidia Fast sync, worth trying if you have a Geforce 1000 series or higher card, although there is no reason it can't be enabled on 900 series -

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/936446/fast-sync-and-maxwell/?offset=3

So installed the latest driver 372.70 and the option is right there, from what I understand Fast-sync is only usfull when your framerate is above the vertical refresh rate of your monitor -

Otherwise you can force enable this using nVidia inspector -

Kaby Lake has landed.

I'm betting the slow booting issue (skylake / z170) is still present on this plateform, that and KL dosent support windows 7/8.1 at this time due to M$/intel being in collusion to force people/biz to upgrade (Class action suite)

So am hoping AMD next high end CPU will be faster than my 4790k and have comparable FP performance.

Scratch that, looks like AMD caved to M$ and their bullshit, the new Zen CPU's will be Win10 only. So unless that changes AMD can go fuck themselves along with Intel and M$.

So we have more info on the 'it will only be supportws by win10 b$, with the keyword being "support" and not "compatibility." So its looking like the CPU will work fine on older OS's, its M$ that wont support the new CPU's not Intel/Amd - well m$ can quite frankly do one.

  • 1 month later...

Apologies if this is already mentioned, but a new update to the ever decreasing Windows 10 (thankfully I have deferred update options on my main PC w/nvidia card), has rendered AMD drivers inoperable for certain models (my laptop has R7 200m, which is no longer recognised in any graphics app / game, defaulting to on-board intel crud).

A few days ago, (yet another) hotfix was released for this issue:

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows+10+-+64#

If anyone has been having issues with AMD / Catalyst and any games - hopefully the hotfix will patch it up so that the card is recognised and works again.

My overclocked 750 Ti can already run everything @1080, excluding "over the top" games and disabling MSAA or maximum size textures. DOOM (4) runs @30-40 FPS with Vulkan.

Well, I guess I'm no longer in the "low-end" club. I got a Geforce GTX 1050 for Christmas.

After having to struggle for about a week, a DVI to HDMI adapter has allowed this thing to

provide an actual signal to my monitor (WOO!).

Looking at price\performance ratio listings and this thing is pretty high on the list.

This might be the best sweet-spot price since my old Radeon 9500 Pro. Pretty gobsmacked to see a $100

card that can out-punch over 60% of the "high-end" cards on the GPU charts. So I guess the big question

is what happens when AMD's Vega chips come out. Do the RX470 \ 460 cards move to the sub 100 ranges or

do they more or less stay put and just let Vega live next to the GTX 1080. I guess it depends on

whether Vega outguns the GTX 1080. AMD is getting in the swing of things with their DX12 \ Vulkan

\ Asynch shader initiatives so this is looking to be a good fight. (Too bad about the OpenGL side of

things for AMD though. You can't just give-up on OpenGL and focus on Vulkan guys.)

DOOM 2016 Demo runs great, usually above 80FPS at my native 1360x768.

The HDMI port on the card is not a primary port apparently. My current monitor is really an LCD TV from my wife's exercise room

as my main (real) monitor died about 6 months ago. It has VGA and HDMI but no DVI or Displayport. Someday I'll have a proper monitor again.

Until then, my low 1360x768 resolution means I can crank quality settings up ;)

Speaking of TV monitors and 1360x768 resolution, I never managed to get anything but AMD cards to actually use those natively. I was always stuck with 1280x720 and upscale, or 1920x1080 and downscale with my Toshiba TV. Which is the choice of hanging or shooting, if you want to use the system for anything more than video watching.

Did that change with recent Nvidia drivers, or is it an oddity of my TV?

Well then, it's been about a week since I released my first FM and I must say that I was very pleasantly surprised by its reception. I had expected half as much interest in my short little FM as I received and even less when it came to positive feedback, but I am glad that the aspects of my mission that I put the most heart into were often the most appreciated. It was also delightful to read plenty of honest criticism and helpful feedback, as I've already been given plenty of useful pointers on improving my brushwork, level design, and gameplay difficulty.
I've gotten back into the groove of chipping away at my reading and game list, as well as the endless FM catalogue here, but I may very well try my hand at the 15th anniversary contest should it materialize. That is assuming my eyes are ready for a few more months of Dark Radiant's bright interface while burning the midnight oil, of course!
