Here's the announcement post for the source code: https://frictionalgames.com/2020-09-amnesia-is-now-open-source/

I'm curious what can be done with the code. It's useful for archival purposes of course, plus it means that it'll always be possible to find a way to run the game on ever-changing systems (especially Linux in which older proprietary games sometimes just up and die on newer distros), also maybe someone will port it to ARM or something.

I'd be surprised if the engine can be used as the basis for a new game since it's probably built specifically for Frictional's purposes rather than as general-purpose engine, but who knows.

A word of warning, Agent Denton. This was a simulated experience; real LAMs will not be so forgiving.

Cool :) allready done some work on HPL1.

As far as i can glean you are free to do whatever with the code but the game assets are proprietary so much the same as with idtech.

Code could be used for a game but we would need to create new assets for it.

The HPL engine itself is just a framework much like irrlicht engine so custom game code is doable.

It certainly can, it is made for a fps game but there's nothing that prevents anyone from changing the code now, for example there's a side scroller made in idtech4 even tho the engine is optimized for first person games. In the case of HPL modding, someone made a small racing game in HPL3, Soma engine! A game and engine that afaik has zero code for vehicles and without the source code, imagine what fans will be able to do now that they have access to the full engine.

Looking forward to this one. They are going to release an editor shortly after release as well, so it will be interesting to see what the community comes up with. Just read an interesting interview with Thomas Grip on Moddb:

Maybe we'll get fantasy-horror creations like Thief's more scary levels over the series, like Shalebridge Cradle and Haunted Cathedral.

Might not be the most known game but call of cthulhu dcote could be a good candidate for some TLC with this engine.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_of_Cthulhu:_Dark_Corners_of_the_Earth

The story in the original was really good and closely followed hp lovecrafts though it used elements from a few different novels (shadow over insmouth / dagon etc.), unfortunatly the engine sufferred some serious bugs due to the studio going bankrupt and the lead dev being the only one left to finish it before the lights went out.

Though not as sneaky as amnesia it does pay off to stay away from plain sight.

If you go insane in the game because of the things you encounter you would most likely blow of your own head with a gun (game over man) :P

Also there is no healthbar and if you get injured you will need splints for broken bones medkits and time which made it insanely hard at times if you were hunted.

Using morphine to dull the pain also has serious drawbacks as even though you might get away this time it will deteriorate your sanity so you have to be really carefull using it.

The sanity system also plays in here as if you start to go crazy it will blur your view and make you walk like your drunk which makes it even harder.

Great game, really liked the story and the various elements it used. The new Cthulhu never really was able to capture me in the same way. Would be interesting to see some Cthulhu mods with this engine as it really fits the atmosphere.

I can dream :) sadly i sometimes wish i had any skill in mapping (usualy end up breaking both pen and paper when drawing something).

But maybe someone with the same wish comes around and decides to take alook at it.

I'm back! Happy new years, TDM folks!
I brought with me a quick update for my first FM that fixes up a lot of small issues that didn't get caught in beta testing. I didn't exactly expect it to take me nearly 9 months to release a patch, but it's been a wild year to say the least. Teaching, finishing up my Master's of Education, and all manner of other events forced me to drop out of the anniversary FM contest and ate up all my time, but I'm back again in a comfortable position to start catching up on all the new FMs. I may even start work on another spooky project of greater length and difficulty in the coming year.
Thanks again for the warm welcome to the community and have a happy new year!

I got myself the apple tv trial subscription. I have to say, “Foundation” (season 1) is very exciting. Shall I read the books as well?
