  1. Knoppix is a great USB system. It even fits on a card the size of my fingernail and includes FireFox, Gimp, a graphical desktop, & OpenOffice.org.

    1. jaxa

      jaxa

I hear they're gonna make a 128 GB card the size of your fingernail.

    2. lost_soul

      lost_soul

This OS uses only 700 MB. I tried rolling my own live system, but I couldn't get the compression down that far, or the speed as high. It even supports persistant changes.

    3. SeriousToni

      SeriousToni

Spam! Oh no, sorry. I just thought so by my habits. ;p

  2. Good job TDM devs. I just noticed that if the player jumps down from a high fall and grabs a chain, he still takes damage. In most games, you can jump down 5 miles and as long as you grab a ladder or a rope, you're fine.

    1. pusianka

      pusianka

in scct versus as a merc you can't grab a fucking thing when falling so you better be happy!

    2. Melan

      Melan

I like that feature too. Surprised me the first time, but it was one of those "Oh yeah. It's like that." moments.

    3. Xarg

      Xarg

Does this happen with ropes and vines too?

  3. So, there's a new tablet coming out called the "Mipad". Isn't that a bit like poking a bear with a stick? ... a very letigious bear at that!

    1. PranQster

      PranQster

Wow...what a very creative product name. LOL, yeah, they're looking to be mauled by that bear.

    2. Sotha

      Sotha

In Finland there is a place called "iijoki" like "ii-river." I always wondered when those i-phone folks will sue their asses.

    3. lost_soul

      lost_soul

Maybe they do this to get their name known... If you see "Apple sues X" that's advertising for X. Also, there were MP3 players called IRiver. I don't think that manufacturer got sued, but this is surely over the line.

  4. Its funny. There is HDTV, HD radio, high speed Internet, and yet the phone system still operates at 8 KHz! Why?

    1. demagogue

      demagogue

I'd guess sunk costs in old infrastructure.

    2. jaxa

      jaxa

voice requires barely any quality/bitrate to understand. Just look at Speex/Opus

    3. stumpy

      stumpy

probably because digital can be knocked out by a solar flare, volcanic eruption, heavy rain so they still need a form of communication that isn't effected by these and other natural effects.

  5. The strange dreams we have; In mine, i was searching online for a solution to a technical problem and wound up running around in a Quake CTF map consisting of pipes.

    1. pusianka

      pusianka

let me translate taht for ya: problem is your life, pipes mean toilet, capture the flag means you have to be there first so you ahd to take a massive dumb like a boss during sleep... or you're going to die in agony... soon...

    2. lost_soul

      lost_soul

Well I ate a bunch of large chocolate chip cookies yesterday, so that might have had something to do with it.

    3. pusianka

      pusianka

      you mean they were poisoned?

  6. Those metal footstep sounds (pipes, grates) have gotta go. They sound muffled, as though somebody put them through a high-pass filter or something.

    1. lost_soul

      lost_soul

EDIT: I mean low-pass filter. It sounds like the highs are cut-off. Its so easy to confuse high-pass and low-pass filters.

    2. Springheel

I'm always open to hearing better examples if people have them.

I really wish we had a full suite of leather moccasins on all these various floor surfaces. Just for realism.

  7. ...that funny moment when you hear a crazy lady screaming profanity like a banshee outside McDonalds... To people who behave this way in public, we *do* laugh at you!

    1. Bikerdude
    2. lost_soul

      lost_soul

I wonder exactly what it is that makes me find this so funny though. Is it because it is so rare? Is it because we expect more mature behavior from adults?

    3. Xarg

      Xarg

Probably because the amount of shit being flipped is highly disproportional to the amount of money spent at the establishment. "The biggest arguments are often over the smallest things". Yeah, the amount of ice in your diet coke is a pretty minor issue, really.

  8. Its always nice when you can re-purpose an old "useless" part instead of buying something new. I needed a washer for something but didn't have any. I found an l-shaped piece of metal from some old project that had a hole in it, bent it to an acceptable shape, and it solves the problem.

    1. Goldwell

      Goldwell

Macgyvering things is always a bad ass feeling :)

    2. Sotha

      Sotha

In research, you often have to do stuff with non-optimal makeshift bubblegum-fastened gear. I wish I sometimes had the perfect tailored tool for the task at hand...

    3. Bikerdude

      Bikerdude

Been there done that, when working on motorcycles over the years.

  9. Spending over twenty minutes to downoad a wifi driver that weighs in at 229 MB is fun. http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS027812

      ungoliant

I don't know what the hell that thing is but I suspect that LexisNexis will find out what you eat for breakfast every morning if you install it

    2. Bikerdude

      Bikerdude

that's 20mins of your life you cant get back.

  10. A 6-core, 3 GHz CPU stays near 42 C even at full load with the stock cooler in a cheap case. Most impressive!

    1. Iz Quierda

      Iz Quierda

A 6-core... in a cheap case... is NOT impressive. ;)

    2. Bikerdude

      Bikerdude

well it clearly depends on the case, dosent it...

  11. Landing in a plane and seeing a crashed plane outside your window that went down just yesterday.... At least its better than seeing it as you take off.

    1. Sir Taffsalot

      Sir Taffsalot

...At least its better than been in the plane that crashed!

    2. Diego

      Diego

      the san francisco accident? :-o

  12. So... I just touched a metal leg on my *desk* after I had a lot of static electricity from moving on carpet, and my computer rebooted immediately. WTF?

    1. lost_soul

      lost_soul

I was gonna say "its not touching the desk" but I discovered... a USB hard drive in a metal enclosure that is sitting on the lower portion of the desk (where the tower would go) that happens to be plugged in. Said lower portion is also made of metal.

    2. SeriousToni
  13. Ever have a file that won't open? I did. I wondered why. I ran "strings" on the file to see what data was inside and got nothing. Then I opened it with a hex editor and had a look... all zeros...? Its nice to have an OS that ships with useful tools like this by default.

    2. AluminumHaste

      AluminumHaste

      I can do all that with Dos......cause I rock.......shut up :(

  14. It turns out that an old PC with a bad motherboard still makes a pretty good foot rest... until I come across some more parts to stuff in this thing and get it running again.

    1. lost_soul

      lost_soul

Have you ever rebuilt an HP system with a generic mATX motherboard? Will it fit? I did it in a VAIO a long time ago and I had to rewire the front ATX panel because it had a proprietary connector.

    2. Bikerdude

      Bikerdude

      Yeah, but very rarely.

  15. *achievement unlocked* I made a GPU in a laptop reach over 100 degrees C! This was while compiling code. I imagine this laptop would live about twenty minutes if I ran blender on it... lol http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/256123-28-pavillion-dv2500-nightmares-heating-running

    1. lost_soul

      lost_soul

Raise your hand if you've ever made a component reach tripple-digit temps in celsius!

    2. Bikerdude

      Bikerdude

er, so many times I can be considered Jaded... :-)

  16. I'm glad to say that the exploit where you run back while a guard charges you with his weapon and you can get out of the way has been fixed! Very well done guys, it is just right! (While the above is true, "run back" doesn't feel crippled.)

    1. Springheel

      Springheel

Yep, the fix didn't involve changing the run speed at all.

    2. lost_soul

      lost_soul

I still remember in some old version of TDM, the player was able to hit himself with his sword by running forward and swinging at a particular angle. It cracked me up when I found it.

  17. Nevermind the sliding sound. Its just the laptop chipset heatsink that fell off!

    1. nbohr1more

      nbohr1more

That better be an Intel P3 or later... or else sizzle sizzle...

    2. Sotha

      Sotha

Well. There are many excuses to buy a new, shiny and better laptop...

  18. I'm now running my OS from a read-only root-fs to make it even more secure. Var and tmp were linked to the home directory to prevent breakage.

    1. jaxa

      jaxa

How many times more secure than Sony?

    2. lost_soul

      lost_soul

Folks mock Sony because of things they've done in the past, but as I sit here using a 10 y/o monitor and 9 y/o headphones, I admit they've made some good stuff in the past.

  19. *is playing .opus files (the brand new codec) on my hacked mp3 player that was released in 2007* My brand new tablet can't even play .opus, yet old hardware can thanks to the community.

    1. jaxa
    2. nbohr1more

      nbohr1more

Well, hack your tablet and opus support should be around the corner too. That said it's good to see the community keep improving the old hardware.

  20. Funny thing: Every time there's an article about security issues, somebody always spells rogue "rouge" in the comments... and then somebody else always pokes fun at them, saying that the hackers must be very cheeky.

    1. SteveL

      SteveL

I remember that was always the standard spelling of the word in WoW "need rouge lfg!!!", during the times when rogues were overpowered instead of pointless.

Hey they're back to 2nd spot after Mage

  21. Few things are as satisfying as sneaking in the enemy base and sabotaging it while they're destracted.

And also - doing so in a computer game.

  22. I seem to have lost my collection of FMs for T1/2/DS. What a shame. I had gigabytes of them.

I have the latest set of Komag DVDs and it's one of the best things a taffer could spend money on.

  23. Isn't it funny when a program never crashes... unless you happen to have been doing something for the past ten minutes without saving in that time?

    1. lost_soul

      lost_soul

At least it keeps your state in /tmp, so all I had to do was repeate a couple of operations to get back to where I was... but every user still goes "****!" when the window just disappears like that.

    2. pusianka

      pusianka

      Probably some Murphy law ;)

  24. I set the date back on my system. Then it wouldn't boot anymore. I had to run fsck on the partition to fix it because the last modification date was in the future... lol Imagine average users in this situation. That would be a visit to tech support right there.

    1. lost_soul

      lost_soul

When I think about it, it still doesn't make sense. Shouldn't the timestamps on the filesystem be updated during the prior normal shutdown process after the date was changed?

    2. SeriousToni

      SeriousToni

Erm.. I have no idea. Of course, maybe..? I would call the Tech support about this! xD

  25. This can't really be of help to TDM at all because we're already OpenGL, but its still pretty cool! http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTYyNjM

And a great reminder of how DirectX really dropped the ball. :) Lovely, so glad I decided to learn GL instead of DX back in the day.
