  2. I was quite happy playing Dark Radiant on Windows 7 Release Candidate, by running it in "Windows XP Compatability Mode". Without it, DR was jerky, slow, often unresponsive and crashed a fair few times. Unfortunately, the RC has come to an end and I've had to install a full copy of W7 (I've gone with Ultimate edition). All of a sudden, I can't get XP compatability mode for Dark Radiant. I can get it for other programs, but for some reason DR's compatability options only go back as far as Vista. This basically renders DR as unplayable on my PC. Does anyone know how to solve this issue? Will a Windows 7 version DR be released?
  3. Have any of you ever heard of f.lux? It's a great Computer application that makes it so your monitor's brightness and light lowers down during night, so you won't see that "strong blue light" that is detrimental for our "Sleep Hygiene". I use it as I have issues with sleeping. Thing is...'f'lux' is a terrible pair with The Dark Mod. Windowed or Fullscreen, f'lux will just change the brightness of my monitor and not let TheDarkMod do it. Thanks to that, I see even "blackish gray" darker than the rest, which I don't want. So I was wondering, do you guys have any idea on how I can use f'lux with The Dark Mod? Maybe there's actually a way better program than f'lux when it comes to videogames? The only thing I can do is shut it down, but then I easily forget about it, which is normal as this is (almost) an "Install & Forget" program.
  4. I did some searches but seach terms for "windows 7 dark radiant" bring up all sorts of things about actual windows. I loaded up TDM on Windows 7 x64, went ok, but the first level I played was super slow (1 frame every 5 seconds or so once it was loaded). Updating video drivers fixed it, but I get something similar in dark Radiant and don't know if they are related. When I install and load the x64 or x86 versions, it takes forever for the views to respond. The grid views take a long time to come up, and clicking or dragging takes 5 minutes or more to register. Are the two related? Do I have a video driver issue, or do others have issues with Dark Radiant in 64 bit Windows 7? I loaded the editor up in a virtual XP and everything runs smoothly, but I don't think I can test things that way because of the low VM graphics. AMD Phenom X4 9600 Asus Crosshair MB Asus GeForce 8800 GTS 2x 2GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2 800Mhz Windows 7 x64, clean install
  5. How many floppy disks would it take to store the dark mod and all its missions?

The latest ones I remember could store a bit over 3MB. If Mr. Bohr is right with the size we would talk about 3600 disks.

  6. Hey all, Here's a compilation of various sounds that can be used in your FMs as ambience or environmental tracks. I'll be adding more tracks in the coming weeks / months across a range of different ideas. You'll hear some thief inspiration, as well as some silent hill; I'm still stuck in the 90s so I try to keep the tracks reminiscent to that generation of computer gaming Most are fairly minimal with 1 or 2 layers, but I can compose something more melodic on request. Feedback / comments welcome! I hope you can find some use for them. https://tecknic.bandcamp.com/album/the-dark-mod-ambience-and-atmospheres
  7. When playing The Dark Mod I can not use system keyboard shortcuts like Alt-Tab, Esc or Alt-F4. This means that the only way to exit the game is by going to the main menu and quiting there. And there is no way to just minimize it. This is extremely annoying, particularly when I accidentally click an other window after I run the game, but before it loads its window because that means that the game window will appear under the current window and it will lock my mouse and I don't see anything from it, my only option in this case is long holding the power button to turn off the computer. The another problem is that the brightness and the gamma slider does not do anything, there is no way to set them which makes the game annoying to play, because everything is very dark. When I was using Windows these never happened. If I run the .exe using Wine it has no problem (except that the frame rate is decreased to its half). Why is it happening? What should I do?
  8. I've been working on an ASE export script on and off over the past few days and now have something to show for it. The script needs to be placed in the DarkRadiant/scripts/commands folder to show up in the scripts menu. Download It iterates over everything selected and exports all brushes and patches. This should make vertex blending terrain a cinch. Just construct terrain however you please, export it, load it into a modeling program and vertex paint it.

  9. Hello, I've done some building with DromED and Half life SDK, and I love dark mod so I thought I should try dark radiant. Now it's just one thing that really bothers me -- for some reason it dosn't seem to come with top, side and front views. All I have is 3D view in upper-left (I suppose it is for 3D view) and then just one big view of co-ordinates? I expected there to be 3 different windows like DromED and Hammer. Surely I did something wrong? Cheers
  10. First of all, I must say I'm extremely grateful for all the hard work put in to producing TDM. It really is awesome. However, I thought I'd post to tell people about a couple of thoughts I've had on improvements for TDM/Dark Radiant. It's nothing too major, just a couple of largely aesthetic changes that I thought might make things a bit easier. It's absolutely not intended as criticism. - In TDM, I felt that the arrow speed was a bit too slow and the arc a bit too steep. I've loosed a few arrows in the real world in my time and they're pretty damn fast. In the Training mission, when I was firing arrows at the targets it felt that I had to aim far too high in order to hit the more distant targets. I’d prefer it if the arrows were much faster. To be honest, I think that this is a problem with most games that involve archery. I’m probably being overly fussy. - In Dark Radiant, I’ve found that when you zoom in really close it’s hard to differentiate between the edge of a brush (a black line) and the gridlines (which are grey). It’s not so much of a problem when you’re zoomed out, but it can be tricky when you’re zoomed in to make sure two brushes are aligned. I wondered if it might be useful for the lines to become thicker than the gridlines when you zoom in so that they stand out more. Alternatively, maybe if the inside of a brush was tinted light grey or something to make it stand out. - Finally, I thought about something that might be quite handy that was in The Elder Scrolls editor. It’s a function in which you can select an object and at the push of a button it will “drop” to nearest horizontal surface below. So if you want a spoon on a table, you can get the spoon somewhere over the table, press the button and it will drop onto the table. Or if you want to place a person in the room, you press the button and their feet will touch the floor. I don’t know how do-able these are, but anyway, those are my thoughts. What do people think?
  11. Hello Thiefette, how are you? What is your favorite Dark Mod mission? :)

Hello Carlton Troisi - My apologies for not replying sooner, but am not on much these days and am just seeing your comment. I don't know that I have a particular favorite mission, but I prefer ones with lots of loot, lots of objectives and lots of stealth. How about you?

Haha, just saw your reply now. I would say Volta and the Stone 1 + 2, both Accountants, Requiem rank high up there. I just saw your comment about getting turned around; I get lost all the time! I think I might steal your trail of breadcrumbs idea.. can't believe I haven't thought of it til now!

  12. Not the kind that regenerate like hell from a scrap of flesh, but European mythological ones, nonsapient creatures that have big noses like a howler monkey and turn to stone in sunlight. Would they fit in, or are they too "high fantasy" for the "low fantasy" TDM universe?

  15. Whenever I launch Dark Radiant, it doesn't properly display anything beside the toolbars. Instead, the screens stay white or repeat frame borders and other artifacts when I manually resize the program window. I've attached a screenshot to show what I mean. The editor is not usable under this condition because it doesn't refresh to show work done. I'm using the Win 64bit version of Dark Radiant on Windows 7, a GTX 275 card and its latest 191.07 NVIDIA drivers. The path to Doom 3 is correct, although it's not on the default C:\. TDM plays just fine. Has anyone had similar problems? I assume it's some kind of video driver/program rendering problem? (Edit: It seems I can't make attachments yet...)
  16. Well this is a real pisser. I was gonna buy XP, but NO. Looking at $200 bones for XP and $200 bones for vista I , in a spur of the moment #uck gotta get this machine running NOW decision, decided that Vista was best for future upgrades and also that it would allow me to use all my Ram. Well, Dark Radiant is buggy as hell in Vista. And only 3 of my 4 gigs of ram gets used anyway. Anyway, issues with Dark Radiant 095 so far. It starts up fine. But the windows are mostly white. No grids. When I load a mission it loads entities and whatnot. The camera view tends to be empty. Usually only one orthagonal view shows. I did have luck once getting camera view to open the second time I loaded a map, and subsequent loads would still show 3d view. But after that I haven't been able to get anything to show in camera view at all. Even after loading many maps and restarting Dark Radiant several times. I have also rebooted the computer. This really sucks, Darkmod is the only thing I really work with, now I have this brand new fast as hell tower, a nice large flat screen monitor and they are basically worthless. I can model, but I can't test them out. I can photoshop, but I can't see the results in game. In the middle of a map, but now that's stalled out. I'm more than happy to try and debug but I'd need someone to hold my hand and walk me thru it. I don't know the first thing about programming and as far as I can tell no one else is using Vista? Welcome to Baddcog's world of horrible decisions. ---------- OK, I went and cried about it a bit, then tried to think of causes to the problem. Let's see, 1- Vista has new fancy windows with shadows and crap. I really like my green scheme, but what the hell, I'll try windows classic. (BTW, I have home basic so I didn't get the fancy 'glass' AERO windows, just slightly fancier than XP), Vista look no transparency. Sure enough, I fire up darkmod and all the windows load fine. I tried several options and this is what I found so far. I'm gonna try and find at least an XP theme 'cause classic is soo damn ugly. Classic Windows Scheme works fine. I suppose with any custom colors you'd want as this is old school. Vista Basic windows work with Dark Radiant, but this is basic windows with the minimize/full screen/close buttons inside the window bar (like old buttons). It is also light blue with no color choices. The problem with this is when you mouse over menu items you get a white square and the word dissappears. You can still select, mostly it's a weird visual thing. Vista Standard windows don't work at all, if they do it is very spotty. Most likely the effect is that 3d window won't load, xy views might load but nothing can be selected in them. You can drag a new brush but it will disappear right away and the console says something about a bad brush being removed. These windows have shadows and the minimize/full screen/close buttons are at the very top of the window, not within a 'bar' like old buttons. Vista Aero no doubt won't work with Dark Radiant at all, but I can't test that. So luckily the problem has a work around and I'm not F'ed after all. Whether or not the team wants to try and get DR compatible with Vista Windows by 1.0 release, well, I don't think it's probably worth the effort unless someone knows what the issue is. It's a slight bummer but nothing a dedicated modder can't deal with.
  17. Personally I think this is the worst idea ever. The Reason forums has LOADS of info and knowledge, built up through years and years. I'm really sad to see it go away, and I can't understand why they've made this decision. https://www.propellerheads.se/forum/showthread.php?p=1579099#poststop
  18. Ok. Cool :)

I'll see if I can make something in Dark Radiant later today. The builder tomb is perfect for the undead. Muhahahah! :D

  19. Note: This tutorial assumes a working knowledge of Unreal Ed and modeling software. This is a tutorial on how to import concave brushes and complex objects made in Unreal Ed into Dark Radiant. This allows you to do things you normally wouldn't be able to easily do - such as spiral stairs and curved, arched hallways. First, you need to make an empty cube to put your object in. Make sure it's big enough to hold the whole object. 1 grid size in UEd will equal 1 grid size in DR when you import it. Next, make your object. I'm making a set of curved stairs with a railing. Don't worry about texturing yet. The origin of the map in UEd will be the origin of your model. You may need to rebuild geometry when you're finished. After you're satisfied with what you have, export the map as a .obj file. Now, import the .obj into your modeling software of choice. We need to get rid of that outer box. Delete the polies that make it up. Now skin and export your object like you would any other model. Here's the non skinned model in DR:
  20. Who else here has read "The Dark Pond"? It's a story about a native American boy in the modern day, who discovers a monster from native American mythology is preying on the wildlife of the forest near his school, and gets visions in his dreams from a female fox spirit animal. I ask because I wonder of it could be adapted to the Dark Mod, in an adventure set in the New World.
  21. Thought you might like to know, TDM got an article on Rock Paper Shotgun, today recommending missions. Good to see the game getting interest! https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2017/07/10/the-dark-mod-thief-missions/
  22. Hi, I'm trying to install Dark Radiant after finding tutorials for it on your wiki page, and after fully installing it and trying to load it, it asks for a Game Mod (fs_game). It defaults at darkmod but when I try to continue after Preferences I get an Invalid Setting error, saying that fs_game folder doesn't exist. It's true, I tried rooting through my dark radiant folder and doom3 folder containing the demos but there is no such folder. I tried following the Quick Setup instructions, but maybe I missed something. How do I go about setting the Dark Radiant initial Preferences? For reference, the file path for my "doom3" folder and my "darkradiant" folder is in C:\games, and the demos are in the doom3 folder and work fine.
