  1. I've been working on an ASE export script on and off over the past few days and now have something to show for it. The script needs to be placed in the DarkRadiant/scripts/commands folder to show up in the scripts menu. Download It iterates over everything selected and exports all brushes and patches. This should make vertex blending terrain a cinch. Just construct terrain however you please, export it, load it into a modeling program and vertex paint it.
  2. The Dark Mod is now in the Top 50 folks! Thank you to everyone who has voted, if the stats keep going as they have been The Dark Mod will be heading for the Top 20 post haste!

  3. Hello! I'm pretty new to The Dark Mod. Been playing Thief 2 FMs like 3-4 years ago and after I tried TDM few days ago I fell in love with the series again So far I finished Requiem, entire Talbot series, William Steele 1 and few others. I quite enjoyed the new game mechanics. Especially the movement. It feels like you can climb on anything you want! Which in some FMs comes in handy. While so far it's been great experience I have encountered some issues/annoyances. I would appreciate any help or answers on those things. 1. First and the biggest so far. I seem to stutter/drop fps in the locations with a lot of lightning. I can feel though that it isn't an ordinary frame drop, but something to do with the game engine or lighting settings. Like it's incompatible or something. It's kind of odd for a such old engine to run that bad on the nowadays gaming machines. A very first example when I encountered the stutter was when you enter the "Stealth and Shadows" doors in tutorial mission. After you enter, you end up in a small open space with two lanterns and another doors leading to a guy who sits on chair and you are supposed to sneak past. In this area I dropped from 60 to 40 frames and sttutering was noticeable. Second example, at the end of Requiem where you solve the last puzzle. This room made my game stutter as well. I was wondering if this is some known issue with fix, or if I am forced to deal with it. I have already take any advices from the "performance" wiki. I added all the commands to darkmod config that were listed there. And I lowered all graphic settings I possibly could. The stutter still existed. 2. Combat is one of my least favourite parts of Thief. Even if it was "improved" in the TDM, I stil l dislike it. The normal combat difficulty feels like a most difficult one... I'm quiet scared to think how Master works. Why does normal isn't normal? Enemies are health sponges and I usually die in 3 hits. The parrying mechanics seems to be broken at times. What I really appreciate about Thief is lore and stealing. Not the combat. So I wanted to ask if there's anyway to make combat even more easier with some commands? 3. Guards. Why does guards stay alerted (with sword) until the end of the map, if they once see you? It makes it impossible to stun them with Blackjack if you alert them once. Meaning that unless you reload save, you can never deal with them in a sneaking way. I literally had one situation when I alerted guards early on the mission, only to encounter them second time after coming back to finish the mission. They still had their swords pulled out and it was 2 real time hours later 4. Picking up stuff from stunned/dead bodies. It's a pretty annoying one. If the body lies on a back, then you need to guess if they have anything there. Which means, you need to pick the body up and release it, so it will fell on belly. And the chances of it seems to be random. One time it will fell on back and one time on belly. It's time consuming process, which I am personally not a really big fan off. I would much prefer to these stuff be picked, when you pick up the body by interacting with it. I believe it worked that way in Thief 2. Didn't it? 5. Health potions heal only 25% of health? It's not a big issue, but it seems like potions are scarce in every mission when you take into consideration the amount of time you fall and take damage from enemies. If you are lucky to get alive from fight (on normal difficulty), you need at least 3 to get back up to 100%. Still not a big one, only my observation. I think that's all that really boggled my mind through my experience with Dark Mod. I really loved the FMs I have played and I'm looking forward to play more. Especially William Steele! Really great first mission. I loved the detailed maps of the mansion and crypt. And mainly I have enjoyed The Dark Mod. It's really cool that communities are connecting together to bring old games to life. Shame I wasn't there in 98... well I was only 1 year old back then So glad The Dark Mod is a thing and that people are playing it right now. I hope it continues into eternity! Cheers ~Lukas
  4. Hello, I've done some building with DromED and Half life SDK, and I love dark mod so I thought I should try dark radiant. Now it's just one thing that really bothers me -- for some reason it dosn't seem to come with top, side and front views. All I have is 3D view in upper-left (I suppose it is for 3D view) and then just one big view of co-ordinates? I expected there to be 3 different windows like DromED and Hammer. Surely I did something wrong? Cheers
  5. Announcing: Closemouthed Shadows: Dark Vendetta (working title) Big Edit: Due to some confusion here is some clarification. Is this a complete mission yet? - This is not nearly finished. Why did the briefing suck? - My english grammar is bad as hell. (I would like you to go over my text when it's finished Springheel, thanks in advance ) Will this have a good briefing when it's finished? - I hope so. What is this mission all about? - This is a sequel to the (2008) first mission (see storyline). Why am I doing this? - Mapping is great fun. The Dark Mod has evolved and so have my mapping skills. So I'd like to see what is possible with the current Dark Mod and what haven't been done so far (see goals). I was so proud of my first TDM mission and I want to be proud of a TDM mission again. What's the storyline? - Won't spoil too much but you stole Lord Julians scepter in "Closemouthed Shadows (1)" and he is hunting you down now and killed your friend. Revenge! What are the goals for this mission? - Include cool stuff like: Alternate endings (I think that hasn't been done so far), go to an island by boat (I think that hasn't been done so far), "deep" story with changing objectives, variety in places (river, houses, caves/ruins, island), nice visuals... Aren't that very high expectations? - Worst thing that can happen is that in ends in the "Abandoned Works" thread . Why a thread for this? - To say: "Hello I'm still here" and as a warning: "I may ask a bunch of questions and report some bugs soon" .
  6. First of all, I must say I'm extremely grateful for all the hard work put in to producing TDM. It really is awesome. However, I thought I'd post to tell people about a couple of thoughts I've had on improvements for TDM/Dark Radiant. It's nothing too major, just a couple of largely aesthetic changes that I thought might make things a bit easier. It's absolutely not intended as criticism. - In TDM, I felt that the arrow speed was a bit too slow and the arc a bit too steep. I've loosed a few arrows in the real world in my time and they're pretty damn fast. In the Training mission, when I was firing arrows at the targets it felt that I had to aim far too high in order to hit the more distant targets. I’d prefer it if the arrows were much faster. To be honest, I think that this is a problem with most games that involve archery. I’m probably being overly fussy. - In Dark Radiant, I’ve found that when you zoom in really close it’s hard to differentiate between the edge of a brush (a black line) and the gridlines (which are grey). It’s not so much of a problem when you’re zoomed out, but it can be tricky when you’re zoomed in to make sure two brushes are aligned. I wondered if it might be useful for the lines to become thicker than the gridlines when you zoom in so that they stand out more. Alternatively, maybe if the inside of a brush was tinted light grey or something to make it stand out. - Finally, I thought about something that might be quite handy that was in The Elder Scrolls editor. It’s a function in which you can select an object and at the push of a button it will “drop” to nearest horizontal surface below. So if you want a spoon on a table, you can get the spoon somewhere over the table, press the button and it will drop onto the table. Or if you want to place a person in the room, you press the button and their feet will touch the floor. I don’t know how do-able these are, but anyway, those are my thoughts. What do people think?
  7. I was familiar with TDM some years ago and played around with DarkRadiant until I realized I wasn't getting anywhere. Now I've looked at TDM again and played almost all the missions and I'm totally blown away. I'm thinking about trying my hand at DarkRadiant again - maybe a little bit wiser. Nah. Never happened before. I managed to get to page 5 of the beginner's guide, and it's been a nice smooth intro to the editor, that's for sure. It's a very well done guide.
  8. Just wanted to say, Hello! From reading through various posts in the forums it seems like a great community and I hope to become a part of it. So I got the hankering for some Thief as of late and stumbled on TDM through some googling. After purchasing Doom 3 through Steam and instaling TDM, I have been nostalgiacly playing through many of the FMs and have also decided to d/l the Radiant editor and start making a mission, maybe many, we'll see. As it turns out also, I just started (today!) my 1 week vacation from work and intend to dive in to the Radiant editor and am currently going through the A-Z wiki on it. A bit of background on me, I 'used' to work in application support till the economic crash a couple years ago and was laid off and am now running a machining center at a local machine shop, using Mastercam daily, 2D/3D stuff and have always wanted to make a mission/game, and decided since I've always enjoyed the Thief series and stealth gameplay so much, this is where I would start. After getting to my third year in Mechanical Technology I changed my major to Information Technology (should have went with straight Computer Science but ahhh hindsight). I've always loved building things and designing things and also really enjoy computers, art, audio, and the entire visual experience as presented to a user. I have created a couple playable maps before using the older source engine editor so I'm vaguely familiar with 3D modeling, skyboxes, lighting, AI pathing, etc. That's been over 10 years ago though. I got familiar with 3dsmax, ProE, Autocad, and Mastercam in my first major during school so that helps a bit when familiarizing with a new editor and as previously mentioned I've dabbled around in the Valve Source editor. I'm also very much looking forward to the Crucible of Omens campaign created by the marvelous talent at TDM and would like to help in any way I can once I'm familiar with the Radiant engine. I can also do many many voices, I've often thought about moving out to Cali from Indiana and finding work in voice-overs, voice acting, etc. All this started as a youngster with little friends, time on my hands, and imaginary friends. Wow that's hard to admit. So anyway, I've been working on a shadowy Garrett voice, and can do guards and some women characters with old, old english, gruff, slippery, sneaky, terrifying, voices and personalities. Just thought I'd mention that as it may be a way that I could contribute early on and would also enjoy. So anyway, too much about me and not enough A-Z wiki, back to the tutorial! Glad to be here and hope for good things to come.
  9. Whenever I launch Dark Radiant, it doesn't properly display anything beside the toolbars. Instead, the screens stay white or repeat frame borders and other artifacts when I manually resize the program window. I've attached a screenshot to show what I mean. The editor is not usable under this condition because it doesn't refresh to show work done. I'm using the Win 64bit version of Dark Radiant on Windows 7, a GTX 275 card and its latest 191.07 NVIDIA drivers. The path to Doom 3 is correct, although it's not on the default C:\. TDM plays just fine. Has anyone had similar problems? I assume it's some kind of video driver/program rendering problem? (Edit: It seems I can't make attachments yet...)
  10. Well I just discovered this mod after being a Thief fan since day one. and I am really excited over what the game promises. But I have one problem. I have been trying to download the game now for 3 days. The Updater (v0.66) starts up fine connects and starts to download and it will get just so far and then hang up. I usually let it sit for 5 min or so and then I'll cancel the download. about 1 times in 10 it will close properly otherwise I have to force it closed (not responding) then I restart. at this point I still have 932 MB (9 files) remaining as I type this the loader is stuck on "tdm_textures_stone_brick01.pk4" at 57.5 MB successfully downloaded 6.94% of that 932. I have tried turning off the advanced options but they haven't had any appreciable effect, here are the last few lines of the log Step thread started: 10 Picking mirror waffles.za.net Picking mirror darkmod-alt.taaaki.za.net Picking mirror darkmod-alt02.taaaki.za.net Picking mirror waffles.za.net Picking mirror fidcal.com Picking mirror waffles.za.net Picking mirror waffles.za.net Picking mirror darkmod.taaaki.za.net Picking mirror waffles.za.net Downloading to temporary file I:\tdm_update_win\__tdm_shared_stuff.zip Initiating Download from http://waffles.za.net/tdm/darkmodredist/tdm_shared_stuff.zip Download successful: http://waffles.za.net/tdm/darkmodredist/tdm_shared_stuff.zip Checking filesize of downloaded file, expecting 7558444 Checking download for 'is-a-zipfile'. 11. So the good news, the updater didn't give me problems this time. Bad news, when I start The Dark Mod, my screen zooms in and the game is just in a window. It works fine from what I can tell, but I'd like to know how to get it out of that windowed mode. Anyone else had this happen?
  12. Well this is a real pisser. I was gonna buy XP, but NO. Looking at $200 bones for XP and $200 bones for vista I , in a spur of the moment #uck gotta get this machine running NOW decision, decided that Vista was best for future upgrades and also that it would allow me to use all my Ram. Well, Dark Radiant is buggy as hell in Vista. And only 3 of my 4 gigs of ram gets used anyway. Anyway, issues with Dark Radiant 095 so far. It starts up fine. But the windows are mostly white. No grids. When I load a mission it loads entities and whatnot. The camera view tends to be empty. Usually only one orthagonal view shows. I did have luck once getting camera view to open the second time I loaded a map, and subsequent loads would still show 3d view. But after that I haven't been able to get anything to show in camera view at all. Even after loading many maps and restarting Dark Radiant several times. I have also rebooted the computer. This really sucks, Darkmod is the only thing I really work with, now I have this brand new fast as hell tower, a nice large flat screen monitor and they are basically worthless. I can model, but I can't test them out. I can photoshop, but I can't see the results in game. In the middle of a map, but now that's stalled out. I'm more than happy to try and debug but I'd need someone to hold my hand and walk me thru it. I don't know the first thing about programming and as far as I can tell no one else is using Vista? Welcome to Baddcog's world of horrible decisions. ---------- OK, I went and cried about it a bit, then tried to think of causes to the problem. Let's see, 1- Vista has new fancy windows with shadows and crap. I really like my green scheme, but what the hell, I'll try windows classic. (BTW, I have home basic so I didn't get the fancy 'glass' AERO windows, just slightly fancier than XP), Vista look no transparency. Sure enough, I fire up darkmod and all the windows load fine. I tried several options and this is what I found so far. I'm gonna try and find at least an XP theme 'cause classic is soo damn ugly. Classic Windows Scheme works fine. I suppose with any custom colors you'd want as this is old school. Vista Basic windows work with Dark Radiant, but this is basic windows with the minimize/full screen/close buttons inside the window bar (like old buttons). It is also light blue with no color choices. The problem with this is when you mouse over menu items you get a white square and the word dissappears. You can still select, mostly it's a weird visual thing. Vista Standard windows don't work at all, if they do it is very spotty. Most likely the effect is that 3d window won't load, xy views might load but nothing can be selected in them. You can drag a new brush but it will disappear right away and the console says something about a bad brush being removed. These windows have shadows and the minimize/full screen/close buttons are at the very top of the window, not within a 'bar' like old buttons. Vista Aero no doubt won't work with Dark Radiant at all, but I can't test that. So luckily the problem has a work around and I'm not F'ed after all. Whether or not the team wants to try and get DR compatible with Vista Windows by 1.0 release, well, I don't think it's probably worth the effort unless someone knows what the issue is. It's a slight bummer but nothing a dedicated modder can't deal with.
  13. Is it somehow possible to use a level editor that offers substractive editing mode (as opposed to additive as in Dark Radiant) and convert it to a file format that can be played in The Dark Mod? I mean shouldn't it be possible to generate an additive map algorithmically from only subtractive information? If no, why not? If yes, are there any such level editors?
  14. I'd been telling a couple people but ya'll need to check out the Dark Reader browser app if you wants the darker pages. Works flawless on 80% of the sites I see and can easily revert back and store which sites I exclude. Pretty handy, and great for long nights.

As a fan of dark themes, I always got in trouble when some website would override things and I would end up with white text on a white background. "Where is the article? I can't see it!"

I've been considering reinstalling TDS for a wile now... I've still got my original CDs. Have these guys fixed the bug where you get stuck floating? Last time I played TDS, that happened and I was unable to get out of it, so I ragequit.

You can surpass that bug by drawing your bow, performing a shot, and draw your blackjack when the bow is tensioned, to abort the bow shot. I'm hoping it's fixed in the Gold patch too though. Alongside the thing where you move sideways, when peeking left or right.

      @Biker Hmm.

      Build TDM mission in DR.

      Export as portions as ASE

Edit in Blender and export in TDS compatible format

      Import into T3ED

      Edit

      Release TDS mission...

      (or just stick with TDM)

  15. Ok. Cool :)

I'll see if I can make something in Dark Radiant later today. The builder tomb is perfect for the undead. Muhahahah! :D

  16. Note: This tutorial assumes a working knowledge of Unreal Ed and modeling software. This is a tutorial on how to import concave brushes and complex objects made in Unreal Ed into Dark Radiant. This allows you to do things you normally wouldn't be able to easily do - such as spiral stairs and curved, arched hallways. First, you need to make an empty cube to put your object in. Make sure it's big enough to hold the whole object. 1 grid size in UEd will equal 1 grid size in DR when you import it. Next, make your object. I'm making a set of curved stairs with a railing. Don't worry about texturing yet. The origin of the map in UEd will be the origin of your model. You may need to rebuild geometry when you're finished. After you're satisfied with what you have, export the map as a .obj file. Now, import the .obj into your modeling software of choice. We need to get rid of that outer box. Delete the polies that make it up. Now skin and export your object like you would any other model. Here's the non skinned model in DR:
