  1. https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152224 There is a new mapping contest over on TTLG for the Thief: Deadly Shadows 20th Anniversary and the organizers were kind enough to include The Dark Mod along with all of the Thief games as an options for making a mission to submit as an entry. The deadline is a year from yesterday and the rules are pretty open. I recommend going to the original thread for the details but I will summarize here: Rules: - The mission(s) can be for Thief 1, Thief 2, Deadly Shadows or The Dark Mod. - Collaborations are allowed. - Contestants can use any custom resource they want, though TDM cannot use the Deadly Shadows resource pack. - Contestants can submit more than one mission. - Contestants can enter anonymously. - The mission(s) can be of any size. Using prefabs is allowed but the idea is this is a new mission and starting from an abandoned map or importing large areas from other maps is not allowed. Naturally this is on the honor system as we have no way of validating. Mission themes and contents: There is no requirement from a theme or story viewpoint, however contestants might consider that many players may expect or prefer missions to be celebratory of Thief: Deadly Shadows in this respect: castles, manors, museums, ruins inhabited by Pagans and the like, with a balance of magic versus technology. This is entirely up to the authors, though, to follow or not - it is just mentioned here as an FYI and, while individual voters may of course choose to vote higher or lower based on this on their own, it will not be a criteria used explicitly in voting or scoring. Deadline: May 25th, 2024 at 23:59 Pacific Time. See the TTLG thread for details on submissions and the voting process. Provided I can make the deadline I hope to participate. It would be nice to see the entire community do something together, and expressing our complicated relationship with this divisive game seems as good a pretext as any.
  2. Thanks for the Vicuna link. I need to do more research on open source chatbot solutions. I have a couple of projects in the works that would benefit from a home grown language model, plus it would be good experience. Seeing what others have done with modest resources is good inspiration. Also I must admit I was wrong earlier in this thread about open source not being able to compete with big tech. It did not occur to me that big industrial model builders would be incentivized to gift their own models into the public domain in order to gain mind share with open source ecosystems that can out-innovate them on the application side. The upside for them is that they can effectively crowd source the R&D to turn their fancy tech demo into actually valuable products for the open market and for their own internal consumption. Google at least is taking that concept seriously. Lastly: The results of a couple of gpt-4s attempts are fascinating to me... I got some really interesting failure points, including a rare pattern hypnosis where it fell into a meaningless cycle of iterative modulus calculations. But I doubt you guys want to read 4 pages of that, so here's the beginning and the end. Note for anyone wondering what is going on, the root mistake is a heuristic error humans also make: assuming no one would ask a stupid question. Thus the pattern recognitions assumes we want the complex systematic solution for the closest hard problem... which is what it gives above. Moreover because the question is so minimal it actually half asses its answer here: ignoring the fact that it already knows next Easter falls on March 31, 2024 from reading online calendars! What's more, it has more than enough information in its memory to attempt the computus calculation (albeit unsuccessfully in every attempt I saw). Once again we see that context is king for LLMs. In fact we can even break it out of the faulty heuristic with a small change to the prompt:

It's probably nothing more that goes wrong, and reading wrong memory by itself does not crash often (it is usually valid memory page, and depending on the build its contents can be quite deterministic). It is not the first time where such issues cause crashes on Linux while Windows build seems to work fine. Also, we might have different compile settings: Linux build settings are pretty standard, while Windows ones have e.g. security buffer checks disabled. Even calling conventions are very different between Windows and Linux. Most of C++ worshippers don't look any further than "we get undefined behavior here"

OK, posting this in case anybody else is having the 1.5 second crash I was experiencing in Linux: if I quicksave immediately on mission start, before the message about reading the objectives appears, then I am able to continue normally, quickload normally etc. So DavyJones is probably right, it seems to be caused by something happening during- or right after that message appears.

  9. In the kdenlive subtitle editor, use the "End" counter to adjust the subtitle phrase end point. Then export to an .srt file, and look within that file. Does the phrase have the same specified endtime, or has it been changed? The latest Cadet release version, 2.0.044 of April 14, incorporates the beta. The main feature added was that, if you go into Tool/Preferences, there's a new line "Show cc reading rate with alarm threshold of [...] in units of [CPS or WPM]". There's also a bit more flexibility in how to advance from one phrase to the next. BTW, I found the Cadet project feature adds no value. I just (re)use an anonymous project, and export the .srt. If later I need to adjust something, I can use "Import" of the .srt to do so. If I strongly needed a tool that had speech-to-text capabilities, I would not use Cadet. Since I've got preexisting text for the vocal sets I'm currently processing, I'm not needing speech-to-text right now.
  10. checkDurationsinSRT is now available: checkDurationsInSRT.exe checkDurationsInSRT.cpp This Win/console program scans a directory for .srt files, reporting on each in turn. It warns about those subtitle phrases(aka messages) that are potentially too short or too long in time, or that seem to require too high a reading rate, expressed in characters per second (cps). It also looks for within-file subtitle messages that overlap in time. Invocation: checkDurationsInSRT -l lowerBound [default is 1.0 sec] -u upperBound [default is 6.0 sec] -c maxCPS [default is 17] -d dirWithSrtFiles [default is current dir] -o output file [default is stdout] For more, run with -h or ? options, or see comments in the C++ source code file. EDIT: The above links now access a May 6, 2023 update, that corrects a significant error in character counting for the cps calculation. In addition, if a given subtitle's cps is too high, the warning now includes a suggestion: "try x.xxx seconds". That says what longer duration would be needed to achieve the target cps. How or whether than longer duration could be achieved is left up to you.
  11. Seems like most threads about this topic on the internet get filled by similar themes. ChatGPT is not AI. ChatGPT lied to me. ChatGPT/Stable Diffusion is just taking pieces of other people's work and mashing them together. ChatGPT/Stable Diffusion is trained against our consent and that's unethical. The last point is kind of valid but too deep for me to want to go into (personally I don't care if somebody uses my text/photos/renders for training), the rest seem like a real waste of time. AI has always been a label for a whole field that spans from simple decision trees through natural language processing and machine learning to an actual hypothetical artificial general intelligence. It doesn't really matter that GPT at its core is just a huge probability based text generator when many of its interesting qualities that people are talking about are emergent and largely unexpected. The interesting things start when you spend some time learning how to use it effectively and finding out what it's good at instead of trying to use it like a google or wikipedia substitute or even trying to "gotcha!" it by having it make up facts. It is bad at that job because neither it nor you can recognize whether it's recalling things or hallucinating nonsense (without spending some effort). I have found that it is remarkably good at: Coding. Especially GPT-4 is magnificent. It can only handle relatively simple and short code snippets, not whole programs, but for example when starting to work with a library I've never used before it can generate something comparable to tutorial example code, except finetuned for my exact use case. It can also work a little bit like pair programming. Saves a lot time. Text/information processing. I needed to write an article that dives relatively deep into a domain that I knew almost nothing about. After spending a few days reading books and articles and other sources and building a note base, instead of rewriting and restructuring the note base into text I generated the article paragraph by paragraph by pasting the notes bit by bit into ChatGPT. Had to do a lot of manual tweaking, but it saved me about 25% of time over the whole article, and that was GPT-3.5. GPT-4 can do much better: my friend had a page or two full of notes on a psychiatric diagnosis and found a long article about the same topic that he didn't have time to read. So he just pasted both into ChatGPT and asked whether the article contains information that's not present in his notes. ChatGPT answered basically "There's not much new information present, but you may focus on these topics if you want, that's where the article goes a bit deeper than your notes." Naturally he went to actually read the whole article and check the validity of the result, and it was 100% true. General advice on things that you have to fact check anyway. When I was writing the article mentioned above, I told it to give me an outline. Turns out I forgot to mention one pretty interesting point that ChatGPT thought of, and the rest were basically things that I was already planning to write about. Want to start a startup but know nothing about marketing or other related topics? ChatGPT will probably give you very reasonable advice about where to start and what to learn about, and since you have to really think about that advice in the context of your startup anyway, you don't lose any time by fact checking. Bing AI is just Bing search + GPT-4 set up in a specific way. It's better at getting facts because it searches for those facts on the internet instead of attempting to recall them. It's pretty bad at getting truly complicated search queries because it's limited by using a normal search in the background, but it can do really well at specific single searches. For example I was looking for a supplement that's supposed to help with chronic fatigue syndrome and I only knew that it contained a mixture of amino acids, it was based on some published study and it was made in Australia. Finding it on google through those things was surprisingly difficult, I'm sure I could do it eventually, but it would certainly take me longer than 10 minutes. Bing AI search had it immediately.

ChatGPT spouting bullshit here, which is now available on the internet for anyone to read Anyone reading that who has no experience of TDM will think that's something TDM does because ChatGPT told them it does, they may install TDM purely because of this They could then be disappointed in TDM rather being disappointed in ChatGPT when they fail to find this functionality after installing TDM, thus causing harm to TDM's reputation If they go to the forum and ask they'll be told the functionality doesn't exist and never did, but they've actually got to go to the forum of a game they've just rage quit to find that out, instead of taking to Farcebook or Twatter and crapping all over the reputation of a talented bunch of people who've worked extremely hard on this project for over a decade ChatGPT has obviously trained on data from the TDM website among many others, but instead of pointing people at the website or simply stating that the requested information does not exist, it made up some plausible bullshit that fits it's training data and now it's done that it will defend it to the hilt, it will never admit this is wrong or that it made this up ChatGPT is being built to make a profit for OpenAI Did OpenAI contact the site admin to ask for permission to use the TDM website in this way ? Has OpenAI made any financial contribution to TDM for using it's data to train a neural network they hope will earn OpenAI billions ? How does TDM get the bullshit spouted by ChatGPT corrected before it harms TDM's reputation ?
  13. @vorobThe versioning in the mission downloader works differently than the info/description which is just reading the a text file in the mission archive. Every time a mission gets updated the mission downloader will increment by one. Release is 1. First patch is 2. Second is 3, etc. If you have the latest version from the mission downloader, you have the latest version.
  14. Official support within DM would be great, but I suspect it could be done now using something like this: Create "go to location x" as the last objective in the mission. This is a "controlled by external script" objective.(assuming the last step in the mission is to go to a location) At location x, create a triggle_multiple that calls a script The script checks that all other objectives have been met. If so, display the GUI debrief page(s). Then, when the player finishes reading, set final objective to Complete. Mission will end. This assumes it is possible to display an arbitrary GUI in the middle of a mission. For my WIP, I want a debrief, so I'll experiment with this.

Just finished this mission and wow I gotta say in great honor to Grayman and of course the rest of the team picking it up, this was something I've never seen before in any other TDM mission, especially visually wise. I am so happy that grayson gave green light for other experienced mappers to finish his last mission. And what came out of this is really something special.   17. One of the first custom missions I've played, the level design here is outstanding and is easily one of the best Thief missions I've played. Levels were big and sprawling but never too confusing. Good level design made completing objectives feel natural. The lore seemed pretty good though I'm not big on reading in-game lore, and I really enjoyed finding loot (I think I only found around 1/3 of the available loot, which is insane). Great job! I encountered one glitch, the guard in that little booth near the water, I took his keys and turned off the camera and he became stuck in the doorway. I had to reload a save and steal everything and leave quickly to stop the glitch. Just thought it might be worth mentioning but it wasn't a big deal.

  22. Wow, quick response. Thanks! So far it's always been an entity leak. I've had a look at the pointfiles. Still I wasn't able to detect whats wrong. Could it be that leaks can only be resolved by dmapping? Because thats what just happend. It seems to me that once a pointfile was generated it stays no matter what I do. I typically change something, then save and turn pointfile off and on to see if it still complains, which it always does. I'll try to reproduce this to confirm my assumtion. CTRL+SHIFT+k was also new to me. Seems like I still have some reading up to do.
  23. heh i was thinking the same though it might just have been a glitch when writing the names are pretty similar. But for correctness it is called the dark engine and the newer version that allows us to run these beauties on win10/11 is called newdark. newdark is kinda interresting as it just suddenly popped up on a french forum some time ago by an anonymous developer with the alias le corbeau who allegedly got his hands on the original source code and started updating it for modern OS. this was the original thread i believe -> https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140085 bikerdude was on that forum to when the patch hit i noticed hehe.
