  1. I'd also argue that you don't need Raytracing to make a game beautiful or atmospheric. The original Thiefs ooze with atmosphere, despite low end low poly graphics and no Raytracing.
  2. there is also sparse voxel octree raytracing which can be used for those without an rtx card (crysis remastered and idtech 6 says hello). software based but quite effective also its quite old by now, first time i saw it used was about 20 years ago.

Unto its end." -Valediction of the Devoted "What year is this? Am I dreaming?" -Plea of the Thief Dear Iris, I am old and broken. When we were young it felt like the words came easily. Now I find the ink has long dried on the pen and I'm as wanting for words as coin in my purse. I can tell we are nearing the end of the tale; time enough for one more job before the curtain call... ============== -Installation- Requires minimum version of TDM 2.10 -Iris does not support mods or the Unofficial Patch- Download and place the following .pk4 into you FMs directory: Iris Download ============== *Thank you for playing. Iris is a large mission which can either take as quickly or as long as you are compelled to play. I hope someone out there enjoys it and this initial release is not completely busted - I tried the best I could!* *Iris both is and isn't what it seems. Also fantastic tutorial videos! DRAGOFER - Who built upon that foundation and made it shine even brighter! And whom also provided immeasurable quantities of help and encouragement the past couple years on the TDM discord. ORBWEAVER & GIGAGOOGA - For generously offering their ambient music up for use. While optional if you wish to see this feature enable the "maps" lighting model and I recommend you also disable image sharpening. If you do not like the effect or are concerned about performance use stencil shadows* *Iris is a performance intensive mission and I recommend a GTX 1060 or equivalent. I find the performance similar to other demanding TDM missions on my machine, but mileage may vary and my apologies if this prevents anyone from enjoying the mission.* *Iris heavily modifies the behavior of AI in the game, how they relate/respond to each other and the player. So they may act even stranger than they do typically in TDM. Feedback on this is useful - as it can potentially be improved and expanded upon in future patches.* -=- This is my first release and it has been a long time coming! If I forgot anything please let me know! God Speed. 2.10 Features Used:
  4. with raytracing and AI becomming more prevalent things look dire for the old card users unless ofc. they dont give a damn and only play older titles . truth be told a fully (true) raytraced engine would murder even the greatest gfx card out there thats why we dont see stuff like that and probably newer will (luckily). thats not to say it wont become hurtfull for those who still use pre RTX and FSR cards, tbh even some gen 1 and 2 of those struggle with titles like alan wake 2 and the latest cyberpunk titles if settings are turned up above low. some bandaids like the DLSS to FSR3 framegen mod allows owners of previous nvidia RTX cards to push the envelope a bit so that for example alan wake 2 runs at <> 60 fps but you better have a top card like the 2080 ti to even attempt 4k in said title. the rtx 3070 also runs it pretty well but in 4k the latency becomes noticeable because it lacks vram. theres a paid mod that also allows framegen for pre RTX cards like the 1080 ti but with alan wake 2 i would not recommend playing above 1080/1440 resolutions if you intend to keep it at playable fps. even the 2080 ti is gimped when the detail levels go into omg... land but it atleast handles it with some grace with semi good detail settings (yeah i have all 3 cards mentioned).
  5. For the people eager to play with the latest state of development, two things are provided: regular dev builds source code SVN repository Development builds are created once per a few weeks from the current trunk. They can be obtained via tdm_installer. Just run the installer, check "Get Custom Version" on the first page, then select proper version in "dev" folder on the second page. Name of any dev version looks like devXXXXX-YYYY, where XXXXX and YYYY are SVN revision numbers from which the build was created. The topmost version in the list is usually the most recent one. Note: unless otherwise specified, savegames are incompatible between any two versions of TDM! Programmers can obtain source code from SVN repository. Trunk can be checked out from here: https://svn.thedarkmod.com/publicsvn/darkmod_src/trunk/ SVN root is: https://svn.thedarkmod.com/publicsvn/darkmod_src Build instructions are provided inside repository. Note that while you can build executable from the SVN repository, TDM installation of compatible version is required to run it. Official TDM releases are compatible with source code archives provided on the website, and also with corresponding release tags in SVN. A dev build is compatible with SVN trunk of revision YYYY, where YYYY is the second number in its version (as described above). If you only want to experiment with the latest trunk, using the latest dev build gives you the maximum chance of success. P.S. Needless to say, all of this comes with no support. Although we would be glad if you catch and report bugs before the next beta phase starts
  6. https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152224 There is a new mapping contest over on TTLG for the Thief: Deadly Shadows 20th Anniversary and the organizers were kind enough to include The Dark Mod along with all of the Thief games as an options for making a mission to submit as an entry. The deadline is a year from yesterday and the rules are pretty open. I recommend going to the original thread for the details but I will summarize here: Rules: - The mission(s) can be for Thief 1, Thief 2, Deadly Shadows or The Dark Mod. - Collaborations are allowed. - Contestants can use any custom resource they want, though TDM cannot use the Deadly Shadows resource pack. - Contestants can submit more than one mission. - Contestants can enter anonymously. - The mission(s) can be of any size. Using prefabs is allowed but the idea is this is a new mission and starting from an abandoned map or importing large areas from other maps is not allowed. Naturally this is on the honor system as we have no way of validating. Mission themes and contents: There is no requirement from a theme or story viewpoint, however contestants might consider that many players may expect or prefer missions to be celebratory of Thief: Deadly Shadows in this respect: castles, manors, museums, ruins inhabited by Pagans and the like, with a balance of magic versus technology. This is entirely up to the authors, though, to follow or not - it is just mentioned here as an FYI and, while individual voters may of course choose to vote higher or lower based on this on their own, it will not be a criteria used explicitly in voting or scoring. Deadline: May 25th, 2024 at 23:59 Pacific Time. See the TTLG thread for details on submissions and the voting process. Provided I can make the deadline I hope to participate. It would be nice to see the entire community do something together, and expressing our complicated relationship with this divisive game seems as good a pretext as any.
  7. Strange. Just restarted the game and loaded from my last save and... they work now! Perhaps restarting was the answer all along. I probably should've tested that before running to the forums - sorry about that!
  8. Because it's super useful not having to browse through the whole thread, and probably not even finding what you're looking for, because people put it in spoiler tags, which are excluded from the search. You don't have to click on the spoiler tag in the original post.
  9. Basically someone always asks. We're all grownups here and it's in spoiler tags so...

  13. Is there something wrong with the forums lately, or is it my browser? I've been having trouble formatting posts, and just now I couldn't format anything at all.

    I'm using Vivaldi.

Usually I have to: select text, click bold, nothing happens, select again, click bold, then it works.

Same for other stuff, like creating spoilers, bullet points, links. Nothing works the first time.

I have no problem. I use Firefox. @Zerg Rush also uses Vivaldi. Have you tried without extensions, or in another browser?

(btw. bold, italic and underline have shortcut keys: Ctrl B, Ctrl I and Ctrl U, you could try that)

    2016+ CPU/GPU News

It should be around $400-600, a price bracket that was once not considered mid-range, delivering raster performance similar to the 7900 XT but likely with better raytracing performance. We can only assume RDNA4 tops out at 16 GB, but 32 GB would be a funny option if they go for it. I think you can create scenarios where games could use as much or more than 24 GB in 4K, but it's obviously rare and largely unneeded. It would be a good amount of VRAM for AI stuff, though the sky's the limit there and 32 GB isn't going to be enough for some LLMs. HBM memory is expensive to make and in huge demand for AI accelerators, enterprise GPUs, and other enterprise products (such as Intel Sapphire Rapids CPUs aka Xeon Max with HBM). I think it's as much as 5x more expensive per gigabyte than GDDR6X/7. So while it would be great for consumer gaming GPUs, with major bandwidth and efficiency benefits, AMD and Nvidia are going to put it in $10,000 to $40,000 products instead. Years ago there was talk of making cheaper, less capable versions of HBM for the mass market, but it never materialized: https://www.tweaktown.com/news/53536/low-cost-hbm-way-hit-mass-market-soon/index.html If the AI bubble pops, we might see some efforts to pivot back to consumer products. Aside from GPUs, probably every CPU should eventually be packing a big L4 cache utilizing HBM, DRAM, or bespoke 3D layers by the late 2030s.

    2016+ CPU/GPU News

Well, the 7600 XT is considered sus for putting 16 GB on 128-bit, but it clearly works in some scenarios. Also IIRC GDDR7 will have about +30% bandwidth over GDDR6X right out of the gate, rising to about +100% as the generation progresses. Big caches (Infinity Cache L3 for AMD, lots of L2 for Nvidia) have made smaller bus widths more viable, and I think they have improved compression techniques and other factors over time to help alleviate bandwidth demands. There's already a little bit of analysis of what we can expect to see in RDNA3+ and RDNA4, very technical though: https://chipsandcheese.com/2024/02/04/amd-rdna-3-5s-llvm-changes/ I am eager to see if AMD is bold enough to do (or allow AIBs to put) 32 GB on the top RDNA4 card, which has long been rumored to be slower than the 7900 XTX in raster, but will hopefully beat it in raytracing and other areas such as AI/ML perf. And I think that card will have a 256-bit bus and 16 GB memory normally.
  16. For free ambience tracks it's as Freky said: you look around on the internet for tracks with the appropriate license to be included in your FM. Fortunately, you likely don't even need to bother doing this as a beginner as there's an entire "Music & SFX" section of the forums full of good ambient tracks for you to use if the stock tracks do not meet your fancy. You might also be interested in Orbweaver's "Dark Ambients", which come with a sndshd file already written for you.
  17. hmm well turns out there is an FSR 3 mod out now that actually helps quite a bit with the 1080 ti, still not getting stellar performance but i can play it at medium settings now with around 45 fps on the old card. the 2080 ti can manage it at medium with raytracing at low and still get 60 fps or high with raytracing off to keep it at around 60 fps, drops to around 45 fps with raytracing at low but still playabe due to it being very stable performance wise. fps only fluctuates by 2 to 3 frames. have to say the game looks really good the story is a bit weird though. there are actually elements from control in it you even get to work with the FBC.
  18. Oh my gosh, thank you for this! After reading what you just said, I realized I've in fact noticed the same thing in another program, but assumed it must be something completely unrelated: I've been working on creasing a CPU based voxel raytracing engine in Python, for which I settled with using PyGame. When the time came to implement first person camera control using the mouse, I noticed it did not work initially... however if I told my code to hide the mouse pointer first, locking it in the center of the window started working. It must be the same thing here in some form, Wayland likely has some very particular expectation on how the mouse pointer must be set in order to be locked. In fact just a few days ago, I tried a virtual worlds software called Vircadia / Overte again to see how it's been progressing. I activated mouse look mode and guess what happened: The exact same behavior of the view spinning endlessly as the cursor drifts away from the center due to lack of locking. So it's clearly happening to many things and not just GTK / WxWidgets related... but no all of them, most games (including TDM itself) work perfectly fine and mouse control never breaks. I'll try your solution later and mention the results, likely tomorrow as it's late now and I need to head off. If it works that would be incredible! At least as a workaround, we could simply not hide the cursor on Wayland, which will look ugly but at least allow using DR without needing hacks until they can solve whatever is happening on their end. Also Plasma 6 was just released, my distribution (Manjaro) will likely be getting it a couple of weeks or at most months from now. I'm curious how that will affect it: Hopefully it won't make the issue worse, but just in case I'd be happy to have a solution in Radiant before then.
  19. the sad thing was that the 6950x was 2000$ when it was new so only something for the wealthy back then, and ryzen was starting to nip it in the butt with lower priced and allmost as fast cpu's. could actually be fun to try out the 2080 ti on a recent ryzen build to see the result, but im quite happy with my setup now i even got an asus x99-AII with a 6900k and a 1080 ti which plays pretty much everything (as long as you dont use raytracing and lower settings a bit for the newest titles). Well not completely true you can actually use raytracing with it using FSR2 but it does lower the framerate quite a bit 20 > 30 fps on some titles, as long as you dont go 4k its more than playable though -> callisto protocol at high settings with raytracing and FSR2 runs at 75 fps at 1080 resolutions.
  20. For the FM? For beta 1 it's here: https://drive.proton.me/urls/H1QBB04GA0#oBZTb1CmVFQb I've already done around 100 fixes though, so you might want to wait for beta 2 which should be ready in a couple of days hopefully. All links are in the first post of the beta thread here: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/22439-the-lieutenant-3-foreign-affairs-beta-testing/
  21. Since due to the nature of this forum, file/image sharing is used quite frequently, I thought to present some alternatives to the widely used Gdrive, which I don't like so much, especially since the last TOS change. File Sharing To share large files there are several options that also do not require registration. The first is File Hosting Online, which supports files up to 25 Gb, encrypted and also includes a Virus Scan that ensures safe use Another good option is Gofile, free to use, privacy focused and unlimited Bandwith. No refistry needed. While the files are accesed or downloaded at least one time a week, they are never deleted, otherwise inactive files are deleted after 10 days. If you prefer to use P2P, that means to share files directly from PC to other, without a hoster in the middle, there are also very good options, which permits to share files and folders without limites of type and size. The most easy to use is O&O File Direct, a small Desktop app (sadly only Windows), very easy to use 1 Open the app and drag the files/folders you like to share in its window 2 Optional adjust the days and amount of permited downloads and if you want a password 3 Share the link which apears in the app Done The only limits are, that the receptor only can download your files, when your PC is online, on the other hand this permits that you can stop the download in any moment, going offline or shutting down the PC. The other limit is, that the files to share can't be in a protected folder. Her are an Example with a list of Search Enines (Html file 423,56 Kb). While I am online, you can download it https://file.direct/f/pmjVFnjfkjFTKTt5 Videos One of the best options is Streamable (need a free account, inactive videos are deleted after 90 days in the free version) Alternatively you can use Streamja, a simple Video sharer with good privacy, free account optional (nick, mail) Images Ok, there are a lot of Image sharer, most used the known Imgur, because of this I add only one which offers some advantages over Imgur. ImgBox (free account) is a reliable platform to share and host images like Imgur, but it make it very easy to upload and post dozend of images simultaneous, selecting all the images you want and drag them on the window, offering coresponding bulk codes from the selected images to post them with one click for forums (BBcode), Html and others, fullsize or thumbnails. More since Imgur used since some time the hated webm formats for gif images, hardly accepted in most forums.
  22. i agree was a bit fun to see the DLSS entusiasts going ape over comparing FSR performance on a RTX card though, omg sacriledge . on the older gtx models it also hurts some that these cards dont have any RT cores for raytracing but it does make some games who uses light raytracing playable at 4K. not really sure what to make of frame generation, guess we will have to see how much of an impact it makes and how visible it will be.
  23. Flakebridge Monastery In this mission you will visit a Builder outpost to steal some valuable books. It is the first in what I hope will be a series about Selis Woderose. I would like to take the opportunity to thank my beta testers: Aprilsister, Bikerdude, Chiron, lost_soul, and prjames. As well as Fidcal for his starting map, and Melan for his texture pack. Known bugs: A small number may appear at the bottom left corner of your screen when the mission loads. Press sheath weapon to make it disappear. As already mentioned this is the first mission in a series. When you have completed it you may know what you'll be going after in the next mission. You may even know where! Enjoy! And please use spoiler tags where appropriate. A couple of screens: (thanks lowenz) http://2.bp.blogspot...0/shot00001.jpg http://3.bp.blogspot...0/shot00003.jpg
  24. well the fsr3 mod from nukem gave the old 2080 ti a massive boost. i can play it at high with medium raytracing now at 117 fps . there is some minimal ghosting in some scenes with framegen on but overall its very good looking. at 4k i suspect things would look very different fps wise.
