Gun supporters in America do not and should not care about statistics. 2nd Amendment + "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants" is all that is needed. If popular opinion turns and a new Constitutional amendment repeals 2nd, so be it, but it is unlikely.

The central category of gun rights is the idea that in a true liberal democracy guns should not be taken away on a popular opinion swing. That's what populism is built on.
