  1. My timing was off on this one. Work on beta-testing is much more needed elsewhere as there are several missions for the contest alone. So I apologize.
  2. YOU TAFFERS! Happy new year! Deadeye is a small/tiny assassination mission recommended for TDM newcomers and veterans alike. Briefing: Download link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JWslTAC3Ai9kkl1VCvJb14ZlVxWMmkUj/view?usp=sharing Enjoy! EDIT: I promised to someone to write something about the design of the map. This is in spoiler tags below. Possibly useful to new mappers or players interested in developer commentary.
  3. Hello, I'm new to the dark mod. I just installed it and I can't select any missions. None show up in the available mission screen even after downloading a couple fan missions. It kinda seems like the missions are there, just invisible. But selecting them and clicking the install mission button only restarted the game and didn't do anything. I tried using different versions of The Dark Mod like 2.09, 2.09a, 2.09b, and the latest 2.10 beta and none of them made a difference. If it matters, my pc specs are AMD Ryzen 5 2500u, Radeon Vega 8 Graphics, 8 GB Ram.
  4. I should be able to beta test some missions. Built a new 5700G + GTX 970 system.

Nope. But it seems to work fine, and it should be a little over 3x the performance of the 5700G's Vega 8.

Rembrandt is expected to double graphics performance over Cezanne. It's possible that the Phoenix iGPU after that could reach desktop GTX 970 performance.

    3. duzenko

      duzenko

      I have a 2011 6850 and it's still faster than 2021 vega 6

OTOH the IGP is sharing 20W thermals with the CPU, so I'm saving a coffee on every electricity bill LOL

Just going by the charts on TechPowerUp, Vega 8 (Cezanne) should be slightly faster than that 6850. Then in a few months, RDNA2 12 CU (Rembrandt) should double Vega 8 perf, although I think it might be more like a 115% improvement. That APU would be the first one using DDR5 memory which contributes to the improvement. From then on, it's speculation. I would hope to see RDNA3 and an increase to 16 CUs in Phoenix given it would be on TSMC 5nm, and then it beats me what Strix Point would have, other than RDNA4.

The end result is that in less than 5 years, laptop/desktop APUs are usable at 1440p or even 4K. Intel is not standing still either, and could be tripling/quadrupling the size of their iGPUs (e.g. 320 execution units instead of 80-96).

  5. Hi fellow taffers, Way back, when I have a lot more time to play, I played a hundreds of hours of T1 and T2 fan missions. Being little bit nostalgic, I decided to install TDM and try some of its missions. However, having not enough time, I was wondering if anyone could suggest missions with a strong emphasis on story and preferably with a twist or two. If you ever played T2 fan missions, I am looking for something similar to Saturnine's 7th Crystal (which is 20 years old now - wow, it was looong time ago). I found many suggestions concerning best missions, but best does not necessarily means with a strong emphasis on story and twists. So I am asking which of those best missions meets my criteria. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
  6. After several months of hard (although very enjoyable) work, I’m proud to announce the release of my first FM - “Cole Hurst 1: Eaton”. Mission description In the northern town of Eaton, Lord Mayor Zelmer is hosting a lavish party at his luxurious estate to celebrate Eaton's establishment... The city's elite, a famous musician and even the Queen will be partaking in tonight's festivities. Screenshots Download “Cole Hurst 1: Eaton” should already be available for download in the game, but you can also grab a copy of version 1.0 from here. To install this copy, simply place the downloaded file named “ch1_eaton.pk4” in your “[the dark mod]/fms/” folder. Notes I would say this FM could primarily be considered a “traditional mansion heist” mission. These were by far my favorite type of Thief 1/2 levels which I have very fond memories of playing through as a child. I suppose this is my humble attempt to create something vaguely similar... I have tried my best to make the story, the readables and the conversations as interesting as I could and so I really do hope that some of you will find it enjoyable. The mission features: I already have some relatively concrete ideas for a follow-on mission in mind, so hopefully I will have time to continue my mapping efforts soon(ish) :) Contributions I have been overwhelmed by the amount of people interested in helping me with this mission. A huge thanks to each and every one of you! Story Kelly Hrupa Voice actors: twhalen2600 (AKA @Benny_the_guard) Kelly Hrupa Testers: @Acolytesix- brisk puzzle solver @duzenko - the man with the admin tools @JackFarmer - objective wrangler @Shadow - a certified spider-monkey who refuse to stay caged @Cambridge Spy - an eagle-eyed book-worm @wesp5 - eager candle-snuffer @madtaffer – readability advisor @prjames - spider assassin @suzy8track – book magician @datiswous – destroyer of crates I would also like to say a special thanks to @Dragofer who has been very helpful with debugging and general advice in cases where I had absolutely no idea what to do. @duzenko has also been very responsive to any game-related bugs that I’ve encountered during the beta phase and also thanks to @nbohr1more for handling this release for me. As I am completely new to mapping in general, I also found @Springheel‘s wonderful TDM New Mappers Workshop extremely helpful when I was first getting started, so thank you very much for creating it. Known bugs/issues While this mission has spent quite some time in beta testing, I’m sure that some of you will discover shortcomings that my wonderful beta testers and I have overlooked. In that case, please do get in touch and I will make sure to address it (to the best of my abilities) in a future update. There are unfortunately also a few (primarily cosmetic) things that I have been unable to solve – at least for this release: The small church model used in Gatwick square has low-resolution textures applied Some picture frames do not match the original frame after being stolen Strange looking shadows on the greenhouses in the garden Visible vertical lines on some interior walls Various gaps/holes in some of the models that I have chosen to use The female mansion lobby guard occasionally sound like a dude
  7. As a retiree, I naturally have a lot of time and this is why I like, among others, to see some videos on YouTube. among them a channel of a standup comedian and some music videos. But it is not little my surprise when I read one of the videos, which is blocked by age restrictions and to see it, I have to prove my age using my ID or credit card. I understand that some content is not suitable for minors, but these on YouTube are very scarce and apparently they apply here a filter at Flanders level, as is the custom in the US. Although it is correct that European regulations require age restrictions for certain content, it is not acceptable to have to publish sensitive data on the Internet, which contradicts all common sense of having to do so for the reason of watching a video on YT, at a company that has already been hacked in the past, leaking hundreds of thousands of sensitive user data., In any case, I'm not even going to pass on my bank details or my personal details to Google, even for the price that I can't see some videos on YT. I am not the only one who is offended by Google's new attempt to obtain personal data from users, protests are accumulating on the network by many users and with articles that rightly question these practices. https://insiderpaper.com/youtube-age-verification-credit-card-id/ https://www.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/jm37a1/youtube_will_start_to_demand_id_credit_cards/ https://tekdeeps.com/you-will-not-watch-youtube-videos-if-you-do-not-show-your-id-card-or-credit-card-neews/ https://www.quora.com/Are-you-finding-it-intrusive-for-YouTube-to-now-ask-you-to-verify-your-age-by-credit-card-or-ID https://linustechtips.com/topic/1349521-youtube-now-requires-eu-eea-uk-swiss-viewers-to-physically-verify-age-before-they-can-watch-age-restricted-videos/ etc. Meanwhile childrens using the ID card of their parents and some authors of YTvideos are virtually death, nobody see their vids.
  8. Story: Thanks: Thanks to my beta testers datiswous, Cambridge Spy, Aluminum Haste, Acolyte Six, madtaffer, wesp5, SuaveSteve and prjames. Additional thanks to Dragofer and Bikerdude who helped with scripting and assets. Download: Gallery: Thank you for playing! What did you think of the mission? I look forward to your honest feedback! Hints, Tips, Walkthroughs, Spoilers(!): - This mission will greatly reward those taffers who like to explore a mission thoroughly. It is possible to go directly for your objectives, but you will be missing a lot of content. - Many windows are openable, leading to new areas or private residences. - If an area seems hard to navigate due to patrols, chances are you can circumvent it. - Those who like a challenge and some extra replay value owe it to themselves to visit the apartment high above the tunnel entrance at Cobb St. (above the last pic in the gallery) FAQ: Disclaimers, Player Information.
  9. In some missions, I hear this indistinct sound. At the same time, it is repeated, approximately every 2 minutes... There is no sound source. Maybe it's a bug that hasn't been fixed yet? What do you think about it? Can this sound be removed? But to leave the music in the mission Listen, please 2:28 - 2:44 3:35 - 3:48
  10. I am pleased to announce the release of our new fan mission, The Hare in the Snare: Part 1 Mission type: City Missions + Inn/Tavern Description: People are being abducted off the streets and a Watch Captain requires the services of a thief to help him find out why. Earlier versions will probably work but you might see one or two missing models. You may experience some FPS drops in some areas with lower-end hardware. Mid-range and above should be fine. If you have issues, I highly recommend you use shadow maps instead of stencil (settings -> advanced -> shadows implementation). It makes a big difference. For 'Hard' and 'Expert' the light gem sensitivity has been increased by '1' (meaning easier for AI to detect you). Screenshots:
  11. Hello. I looked at the translations. But I don't understand, where do the translators get the string IDs from? For example, in the original mission "a new job" there is no folder "strings" there is no file "english.lang". how do I create this file for a specific mission?
  12. I have the game installed and it works, but I can't download missions. Someone doesn't know where the problem is
  13. Type of mission: Mansion/Estate/Horror Story: Lord Blackgrove recently purchased a rare expensive artifact. The whole family has now disappeared leaving the manor empty. Time to check out the manor and see if the artifact can be found. Build time: My first map ever, 300 hours (5 months). Credits: Kingsal - Breaker script for light switches and elevator Dragofer - Ambience Track 'Intent' Springheel and Sotha - Video Tutorials (those videos really helped) Feedback and testing: Cambridge Spy, Dragofer, nbohr1more, Acolytesix, wesp5, Shadow, Zerg Rush, AluminumHaste, prjames The whole community. Download (1.03): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wZc_nqHoX7kQvzfg08EpoRy2hyuH7mw3/view?usp=sharing Edit: Version 1.02 provides large performance improvements in the outdoor areas. Be sure to set TDM Object Details (LOD) to Normal (or lower) to take advantage of some of the optimizations. Edit: Version 1.03 further improves performance around hedges thanks to HMart's alternative hedge model. I’ve had a mission like this in mind for years. My main influences and inspirations are: Deus Ex - Chateau DuClare (https://youtu.be/9QLT_l8aH78) Clive Barker’s Undying - Main Mansion (https://youtu.be/t8PyXhCQB3Q?t=90) Thief Deadly Shadows - Shalebridge Cradle (Almost everyone should be very familiar with this one) (https://youtu.be/Rw4YZuRUgXA) In case anyone gets stuck and needs help, I’ve listed some questions and answers below that will hopefully help. FAQ
  14. As the titles say the names of the mission are not showing up. This is also the latest version (2.09) so I have no clue how to fix this. Any ideas?
  15. I'm on a PAYG internet and wondering if I have enough remaining data to download? Can I get a rough estimate?
  16. While I enjoy The Dark Mod quite a bit, I am not really that much of a fan of steampunk. To make it short and sweet - I don't like the idea of steam powered robots, electric lamps, generators, etc... and other "modern" things. I prefer a medieval setting with perhaps the occasional ghost and maybe even a werewolf howling in the distance. E.g. realistic with a slight supernatural tint. So speaking of course only for myself I would really enjoy if the missions was marked somehow to indicate if it was "realistic", "supernatural" or "steampunk".
  17. Hello, I just found out about the Dark Mod although being a fan of the original Thief-games since the day those originally came out. Since the title's question is not really mentioned anywhere, I doubt that has never been the aim of this project, but I had to ask. One would wonder would the old maps be even remotely useable by id Tech 4-engine? And once again, apparently not, so could those maps be converted to TDM-maps? Yes proprietary things and all, but naturally one would have to have the original resources available yes. You might want to consider adding a FAQ-section to website.
  18. Today I am happy to announce the release of my first FM for The Dark Mod. After 6 years of using this lovely game creation engine, I'm finally able to contribute my own project for it! It took roughly two weeks of non-stop work to do everything from start to end... there's always some little detail to come back to when mapping, thus there were a few little things left out to prioritize others, but at the end of the day this came out almost exactly as I envisioned it. In this mission you play as the typical professional thief. You've been hired to retrieve a scroll containing forbidden knowledge from the mansion of a wealthy noble, put there by the builder church who is close to its owner and found it a more suitable spot. A banquet is being thrown by the lord who owns the mansion which is the perfect opportunity to make your move. Nothing out of the ordinary: You're to retrieve this scroll and get paid for your work... simple, right? Notice: Performance in some areas may be poor. I optimized the lighting setup as much as possible, trying to use as few long range light sources as I could. To achieve the desired theme however I had to leave parts of them map relatively open. Hopefully this won't be a hindrance to anyone... if it is you may need to lower some graphical settings. For people who don't like surprises and may be sensitive to certain themes, read the spoiler below. If you're okay with anything don't as it will ruin the experience! For people who are stuck and don't know how to proceed, instructions are provided in the spoiler below. Only read them if necessary. A tip that needs no spoilers: The key in this FM is exploration and reading everything carefully. There are secrets to be found: Always look everywhere and closely at everyone! I'm eager to hear what your experience with this FM is. Use spoilers when referring to specifics, but do let me know what your thoughts are! Especially with this being my first FM I could use tips, including technical ones if you look at the map in DarkRadiant. Here are a few screenshots of the main areas (intended for the installer): And finally the download links. Unzip and place the main directory inside your fms folder, this should get it to show up in the mission list. Mirror 1 Mirror 2
  19. Recently downloaded the dark mod, latest version, I played snowed Inn and the tired to play the painter's wife, it crashed my laptop 3 times trying to run it, so i gave up trying to play it and downloaded some other missions, first I noticed the painters wife wouldn't uninstall and i couldn't install a new mission, so i redownloaded the entire dark mod, to refresh it as i decided the problem with the painters wife caused an issue and this would have been the fastest way to fix it, however, now no missions are displayed not even the training missions that come with the download, and when I download new missions it connects downloads them, they visible in the fan mission files, however nothing in the in game mission menu, however when I click in the blank spaces, the file size comes up, and the option to install the mission, but no name is visible, when the game installs the mission and restarts, its back to the same again, saying no mission is installed and the files are all still invisible. what's going on, this only happened after I tried to play the painters wife. 21. Hi all I know we had this topic a few years back but I don't want to necro the thread and I have a specific demand: I am searching for FMs in which the guards have lots of randomized patrol paths. With randomized I mean that they have several branches which they randomly pick each time they come by. I do not mean a randomization that only happens once during mission start (replay ability). Background : I understand the idea that the player should be able to memorize patrol paths in a certain way and be able to sneak past them. However this bores me often a lot and takes away the excitement. I want to be surprised and don't want to feel safe in rooms where I learned that no guard will come by. I would be happy if you guys could tell me your mission names in which such randomized paths are used heavily. I especially like mansion maps but that's not a must. Thank you for every hint!
  22. A famous painting is on display at the local museum. Steal it, of course! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ An update, version 2, is now available: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ciesyfcqu1ct6pj/nowandthenv2.pk4?dl=1. Not by design, it just worked out that way. So I guess look for my next mission in early September next year! Hints (contains spoilers)
