  2. Anything we add to "public repositories" has to go through a "release process". Too much work. https://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=TDM_Release_Mechanics Either you ( or @Baal or @jaxa ) test this package quickly or it probably doesn't have a chance to make it to 2.12. At this point it's probably not going to be in 2.12 anyway since we are already at release candidate phase so it might just be offered at Moddb as an optional download until 2.13. I am hoping to squeeze it in.

The gamepad implementation allows for a great degree of flexibility to personalize settings, aside from a few minor issues that I mentioned here: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/22337-gamepad-bindings/ I would say that playing TDM with a gamepad works very well, especially considering that it was implemented as experimental and hasn't been changed since then. If I could, I'd go back to 2021-you and congratulate you on buying that gamepad. I notice that your DarkmodPadbinds.cfg looks very different from mine...
  4. Author Note: This is a brand new mission and a new entry into the accountant series. There are some different than usual puzzles in this FM, so if you find yourself stuck try to think about your pathway forward in a logical manner. And if you're still having troubles then pop by this thread and ask (preferably with spoiler tags). This FM is brand new and serves as the first installment in The Accountant series, a few years back there was a small prologue style mission released however I felt that it did not represent The Accountant series so I decided to go back to the drawing board and do a whole new mission that's larger, has a better level design and has a story that lines up closer to what I plan to do with the accountant series. The mission is medium sized and you can expect between 30-90 minutes to complete it depending on your playstyle.   6. So I thought whether to mention this here, in the end I guess it makes sense as it's now technically a bug report. The discussion started out as a feature request, or rather a set of them... then it was mentioned that one of the functionalities I described should in fact exist, but an error is causing it to be overridden. We aren't sure when it was introduced but since I've always observed the broken behavior it might be years. You can read the full conversation here: https://bugs.thedarkmod.com/view.php?id=6436 What I observed and initially requested: When the player shoots at an AI, the AI shouldn't go searching in a completely random direction, and instead go somewhere toward the player as they should have a general sense of where the arrow came from. Currently guards completely ignore the direction of an attack and will cluelessly run to a completely random spot when hit which is very unrealistic: If an arrow hits you in the back, you aren't going to sprint forward looking for the perpetrator there. How this turned into a bug report: Someone investigated the issue and discovered that when attacked, AI should in fact be picking a search area between their own position and that of the players. I understand the pain event mistakenly overrides that decision, causing the guard to pick random locations within their own radius when attacked. Now that this is known, maybe this can be fixed in time for 2.12 so we aren't stuck with the broken behavior for the whole release?
  7. I am going to sort-of reveal that this is loosely like the nature of my upcoming mission. The player is requested by a hopefully famous character in another mission to handle some business that is affecting the congregation. I am looking to invoke some info and history laid down in other missions as a hook story.

The page above is great for background information about how it works, but as a mapper I really just want to know: What are the limitations of this (i.e. when should it be used and when shouldn't it be used)? Why isn't it the default behaviour? Why all this work to get it into the map? What built-in support for it exists (particle definitions, materials, etc). Do I need to create all this stuff myself? Texture layout vs. Linear layout: what's the difference in the end, pros/cons, why would I use one over the other... Why does it need a separate command (runParticle)? Can this just not be bundled in with dmap? A clear, step-by-step instruction on how to implement it in a map from beginning to end using a simple use case.   9. Yeah it would be cool to see some more detailed statistics and it’s a shame they aren’t really captured. Since we are talking about fan mission platforms, where players also make the content for the game, I feel like the best thing we’ve got is you can look at the number of content releases for the games. Keep in mind the graph counts campaigns as single missions - so for example NHAT and TBP both count as 1 mission. A good year for TDM has has approaching maybe 50% - mostly we’re 25-30%. https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152494 You could also look at the number of ratings thief missions get on https://www.thiefguild.com/ vs TDM ones, but that is pretty iffy in that you could chalk that up to more awareness of the site in the thief community than TDM Out of curiosity is there a reason a thief player can’t be a new player? I kind of think a player is a player and new players would be ones who are playing the dark mod who weren't? Is there disagreement the base of players most likely to pick up the game are fans of the thief games? They are certainly the most fruitful place to find feedback on the game beyond the sphere of this forum that I have seen. When we were trying to finish up SLL there was a lot of discussion on the forums about how long it had been since there was a release for the game. I am thankful that the stats show at least some stability over the years in terms of releases for TDM, but the trend for all of the games is decline. Not doing anything is a valid response if that’s what the devs want to do - it is not possible to provide evidence that any effort will slow that inertia. As a player and content maker I would just prefer trying to find feedback where it is offered from players who were willing to try the game but ultimately could not engage with it and see if there is anything that can be done within reason to ease them into the game. The game has a lot to offer imo. All those players are potential contributors - contributions in turn attract players - it’d be nice to see the cycle go on as long as it can.

The engine should apply the correct subtitles based on the applied language setting, this doesn't need a whole new language system I think. Not sure who's going to write those subtitles though. I can only do Dutch and English and nobody needs Dutch I think.   11. Dear community, I've been working on porting The Dark Mod natively to FreeBSD. I'm happy to report that at this stage, I have a working thedarkmod.x64 and tdm_installer executables on FreeBSD 13 amd64 (x86-64) with SVN revision 9889 and 2.10 game files. I've been able to play through both default missions as well as several contributed missions. There were minimal changes required to get a working port, including: Fixing the build with Clang, FreeBSD's system compiler (committed in 9889 by Stephan) Fixing up header files and #ifdef's for FreeBSD (attached here) Fixing up header files for zipsync (attached here) Modifying the CMakeLists.txt to use FreeBSD system libraries instead of the pre-built libraries for Linux (working, but still cleaning this up before upstreaming the changes) I hope the portability changes will be accepted upstream. I'll also look to see which CMakeLists.txt changes would be appropriate to upstream, but it is not too much of a problem for me to maintain it locally for FreeBSD. Once most of the changes have landed, I also plan to create a package ("port") with a thedarkmod and tdm_installer binary. Regards, Kevin patch-FreeBSD2.diff patch-zipsync.diff

Randal Cartier, a local theater owner, thinks himself above paying protection money to the local gangs. You've been hired to prove him wrong. "The Threepenny Revue" is a first attempt at a Dark Mod Fan Mission. After playing TDM for ages and loving it, I wanted to try my hand at creating one of my own. As such, this is a short, simple, and relatively straightforward mission made to learn the ropes. The experience was very enjoyable, and I'm planning to work on another one in the future.   17. I will probably have to get rid of my desktop PC, and I'm worried about how to work on TDM without it. Obviously, I need a laptop, but: Laptops without discrete GPU will probably run TDM too slowly. Can anyone share positive experience about that? Laptops with discrete GPU (gaming laptops) are often unreliable. I'm worried that they die too quickly...
  18. Looking at the code, the originals were "pm_mantle_pull 750" and "pm_mantle_pullFast 450". The new "pm_mantle_pull" value is "400". A "pm_mantle_pullFast" value of "450" would be slower than regular pull, not faster. With both being set to "400", they are at least similar. Other than that, it's subjective and the feedback from playtesters was positive.   19. Thanks for mentioning this: I did not know that and it explains some things, though I didn't imagine a +10 year old bug that got forgotten would be involved. I did mention it in my report about being able to beat up clueless guards by standing in total darkness, not as a primary focus though so this should probably be reported separately. https://bugs.thedarkmod.com/view.php?id=6436 The functionality you describe would be even simpler: Have a virtual box between you and the attacked guard and pick positions only from there. That would be hardwired to a 90* angle on every axis though: The best solution I can think of is using an AI awareness setting to trace a cone from the AI to the player and pick positions within that virtual cone, the smaller the cone the more accurate the guard's prediction so give it enough space to be fuzzy but accurate enough.

  23. The devs didn't title this thread, and @datiswous said they're attempting to mislead people by using Russell's name and a retro style to make it resemble Thief, which is cynical. I grew up on forums like I'm sure anyone who likes a game from '98 did. I actually left the Discord immediately after joining it because it was more off-topic doom-posting than anything relevant to the mod. I thought the forums might be better, but it's mostly just grown men yelling at clouds and telling strangers how mature they are, and a few brave souls actually developing anything. Depressing place, I'll just stick to enjoying new missions every 6 months without an account.
  24. True, but, 1. this thread is called "Western stealth FPS with Stephen Russell", and, 2. nothing you said changes anything for me. The gameplay still doesn't look like something I'd enjoy. And, if you really think this forum is cynical, then you don't visit forums much. Actually, the majority of the users are are pretty mature, unlike in other forums.
