I'm noticing wavy blotches around all/most objects when they are in front of the water: blackjack, ropes, etc.

What's going on here? Is it supposed to be that way, or is a shader or something else applying to more than it should?

I've attached a screenshot where the effect can be seen (top) and the effect highlighted (bottom).

The water shader used in this mission does not access the depth buffer. It needs to be rewritten but it includes a blur effect so it's harder to implement the change.

Please visit TDM's IndieDB site and help promote the mod:

(Yeah, shameless promotion... but traffic is traffic folks...)

I see.

Is the water shader in the core assets? I couldn't find the shader in the FM pk4 file.

Liking this mission, but I have an issue -

  Hide contents

I dug up the inheritance, read the will, but the phial does not appear next to the box.  What am I missing?

Thanks!

Have you tried looting it? The phial should appear directly to the right, then.

I did -

Spoiler

I frobbed everything out of the ground and read the will. But the phial is not appearing. The only reason I know that the phial should appear is by reading on this forum.  Is there something else I need to do prior to digging up the box? For the record, I have not noclipped - got to the box legitimately in the game.

Thanks.

Don't really know what's going on. Maybe youd like to upload the save somewhere like Google Drive, Dropbox or Onedrive - in that case, what TDM version are you on? What objectives remain uncompleted?

As a last resort you can force the script to happen via the console, but due to a bug you wont be able to make saves for the rest of the mission. Youre 80% done, though. Will need to look up the exact command.

I liked the atmosphere, build up of tension, without actual scares.
Although, when I started, and got into Captain's quarters... I read the readable and thought.... Okay, so there are 11 sailor thugs, only to find a lot more in the house, and wonder what the heck.
Maybe I didn't scroll it?

I liked the dialogue too, but I was a little disappointed that the interior didn't match the description, it wasn't until I returned for the first time did it change to match. And I expected some sort of ghost or ghoul to pop up.

Then the transition, and when I went looking for the spot, I noticed the way it was highlighted. =D That was pretty funny TBH.
Then - Two missions in one was a bigger surprise than I expected. How does it even work?

The only thing I don't get is the finale, but I suppose that's the point.

Spoiler

(I feel like you're not clued enough that the idea is that you jump down. Why would I run towards the fire?!)

I actually still have the original form of the mission that was intended for the 2015 Halloween contest, interesting you should mention that. Figured I’d make it available here, under the name:

Tales of the Riverside

Could you maybe update the mission by including this mission as part of the package? (just include a zip file, so people can manually install it)So it doesn't get lost. Currently the (Drive) download doesn't work. Or just release it as a seperate mission. Or maybe upload it to Moddb.

Thanks for the heads up. Combining the two FMs into the same archive is troublesome because they will try to share assets that are different between Tales of the Riverside and Down by the Riverside and will therefore break each other. I've changed the download link to one that I know should work.

When I click the book I get a crash to desktop. Happens both on 2.12 and 2.13.

The book has a few hidden objectives attached to it that get completed when you reach certain pages. In any case, it's probably better addressed in the tech support forums and will need a copy of your savegame to trace back to what's causing the crash.

Ok thanks for updating the download link at least. I think not many people will find it this way though.

I posted a savegame here:

@Dragofer

Here are the subtitles for this mission.

I completed the mission. I'm very impressed by the quality (even after having read all the praise about it before), although I found the ending a bit abrupt and I didn't fully get it.

Spoiler

You died by jumping from the staircase?

Maybe it's also possible to do the suggested fixes to the river_fading_materials.mtr as mentioned in the other thread?

Just uploaded version 4 of this FM:

  • Primarily this is a bug fix update, using TDM's many new diagnostic tools to fix issues like non-functioning visportals, dead-end GUI elements and sounds not playing due to a wrong sampling rate. The console now posts no warnings about FM-specific assets.
  • Added subtitles provided by datiswous.
  • Adjusted the river forest skybox to look more like it did when I originally released the FM, counteracting subtle, but significant changes to how transparent (leafy) surfaces are rendered in fog.
  • Added a black fog to make the ravine scene look more bottomless. Also, wisps no longer leave behind black boxes at their starting positions.
  • The AI in the bunk cabin of the starting ship should no longer be able to see the player through the corner of the bunks model (all nonsolid items should have visual-clip now).
  • Cleaned up obsolete clutter from old-era material shaders. As a side effect, Linux users should now be able to start up the FM.
  • Switched moonlights in certain outdoor scenes to the new parallelSky system.
  • Got completely rid of the rotation hack for scaling models.
  • Recompiled the maps using the newest version of TDM's compiler, benefitting from a lot of things that stgatilov changed over the years.

Spoiler

I imagined the player to survive the fall (if anything, the ghost would have ensured it) and go on to perform tasks in the service of the ghost to eventually return to the location in the Veil where it met its demise when it was still Johan.

For the sequel I had been working on an XL version of the Down by the Riverside mansion and was imagining a Sword-like encounter in the Veil, but ultimately it tapered off due to inefficiencies in that particular mansion's design (low mapping performance on my hardware, some poor mapping practices on a large scale, and poor backup practices with significant consequences).

I think the WIPs I have now would be better FMs than what the sequel to Down by the Riverside was going to be, whenever I get around to pushing them over the finish line. That mansion WIP is in the abandoned missions repository, by the way.

There's something wrong with the listing in the fm-downloader, because it's the newest update, but it's probably still listed as release time and therefore a lot of missions end up higher on the download list.

I posted about it before, but I think the default tdm logo video looks outdated. For a (i.m.o.) better looking version, you can download the pk4 attached to this post and plonk it in your tdm root folder. Every mission that starts with the tdm logo then starts with the better looking one. Try for example mission COS1 Pearls and Swine.

I finished DOOM - The Dark Ages the other day. It is a decent shooter, but not as great as its predecessors, especially because of the soundtrack.
