"I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."

- 2 July 1844 letter to James Russell Lowell from Edgar Allan Poe.

Annoying bug. There's a subtle dependency of the order in which certain objects get deleted because they can reference each other, but it's so implicit that you basically can't see it in the code.

I hope I fixed it, but I can't be 100% certain. Would appreciate it if you could test this executable, and let me know if you do find more crashes: https://ci.appveyor.com/api/buildjobs/q614b4ojrmat3umc/artifacts/TheDarkMod.7z

I couldn't find the appveyor for linux so I downloaded the source from here:

https://github.com/fholger/thedarkmod/tree/frontend_parallelization

and built my own executable.

Thus far no crashes but also no significant performance improvements to report. Briarwood just seems to cap at about 30FPS for my system.

I should do the profile thing...

Edit:

OK I seem to be mostly GPU bottlenecked in this scene.

A little more testing and 2.08 beta has drops to 24FPS whereas this build with all options enabled never goes below 30FPS

and is frequently at 35FPS.

If you want to detect visual differences between two sets of cvars, the best thing would be to automatically switch them back and forth every second.
Well, if the switching works reliable enough 😉

I posted about it before, but I think the default tdm logo video looks outdated. For a (i.m.o.) better looking version, you can download the pk4 attached to this post and plonk it in your tdm root folder. Every mission that starts with the tdm logo then starts with the better looking one. Try for example mission COS1 Pearls and Swine.

I finished DOOM - The Dark Ages the other day. It is a decent shooter, but not as great as its predecessors, especially because of the soundtrack.
