Arcturus textures

Don't worry about it if it's too much work, it's a good texture anyway. :)

My games | Public Service Announcement: TDM is not set in the Thief universe. The city in which it takes place is not the City from Thief. The player character is not called Garrett. Any person who contradicts these facts will be subjected to disapproving stares.

I'm trying to improve a look of tree_dm models. Original texture is 512x512. It's highly stretched which makes it look bad. I was aiming for more photo realistic appearance. New version is 1024x1024.

If you think it is a real improvement, I'll upload it tommorow.

Yes, I think that's somewhat better. The models themselves could use some work...I've made touch-ups to one of them, but the uvmaps could be much better designed.

Pine family of tree models was using 256 x 256 and 256 x 128 textures. I replaced sequo1.tga with tree_branch_03_pine.tga and seqbrch1.tga with old_rough02.dds. I placed the second one under dds\textures\darkmod\nature directory as it can be used as a normal texture.

I made a new group of church windows - pointedtop_big01: lit in three different levels of brightness (I used rgb values), moonlit in 2 versions and unlit. I packed it all under a one subtree in editor. I think this could be done with all window textures to avoid a mess: http://img177.imageshack.us/my.php?image=treeua0.jpg

Thanks :) Funny how some unexpected things become usefull. I made this photo some time ago in my basement: http://img208.imageshack.us/my.php?image=win6vw8.jpg It's a very dirty small window with a metal net between two pieces of glass :) Effect reminds me a little of Thief 3 windows.

That depends.. I wanted the pieces of glass to be convex. I just thought it looks good, but it can be easily changed.

Is the "depression" in the glass filled with metal? In that case it would be concave (e.g. the metal sticking out), or?

Uploaded. It looks better when it's lighted like on the screenshots, but usually there's not much difference, like in tosl map for example.

I'm concerned about performance, because in tosl I have quite strong lags when walking into new areas. I have 1gb ram and 512 mb on graphic card and it seems that it's not enough to run smoothly. Changing seta image_useNormalCompression to "2" doesn't help much for me.

Hey @nbohr1morehow come the zombies in The Dark Mod don't have a "resurrection" mechanic to it, similar to how Thief has it?
They're quite a weak creature as of right now, it's merely a walking corpse that slashes you, making attacking them to kill them an actual strategy.
Would be better if they had some cool mechanism to it that truly makes them a danger, such as the resurrection idea itself.

Query: when was the last time a zombie in a video game was unnerving or scary to you? I'm chipping away at my anniversary submission and I've been trying to gather opinions on the subject. I'm perfectly capable of lighting them well, changing their sfx, and creating effective ambience, but I'm worried that zombies at their core are just too overdone to be an effective payoff to the tension I'm creating.

Has anyone had any luck with textures from Polyhaven? Their OpenEXR normal maps seem too washed out and give incorrect shading in the engine.

I tried to upscale the TDM logo video. First try:

briefing_video.mp4 You can test it ingame by making a copy of the core tdm_gui.mtr and place it in your-tdm-root/materials/ , then edit line 249 of that file into the location where you placed the new briefing.mp4 file.
What I did was I extracted all the image files, then used Upscayl to upscale the images using General photo (Real-Esrgan) upscale setting and then turn it back into a video.
I might have to crop it a bit, the logo looks smaller on screen (or maybe it's actually better this way?). My video editor turned it into a 16:9 video, which I think overal looks better than 1:1 video of original.
