Destined 538 Report post Posted August 1, 2018 The main reason for me to always turn off the internet while installing Win10 (I had to reinstall a couple of times due to a corrupted harddrive) and making an offline account. I am pretty sure most of the sites are still connected to, as soon as Windows has a connection, but I can at least pretend, they are not. And I never had any problems with suggestions in my starting menu or similar stuff, so it appears that it has some effect.
Anderson 261 Report post Posted August 1, 2018 On a positive note, it turns out just installing Bitdefender on top of the desktop PC makes Windows Defender happy because Bitdefender assumes all control.I just wonder if Avira anti-virus is really such a cancer that can't get cleaned up, not just by uninstalling it but also by using their removal tool. Never had problems with Windows Defender/Mirosoft Security Essentials before. Quote "I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."... - 2 July 1844 letter to James Russell Lowell from Edgar Allan Poe.

kano 107 Report post Posted August 22, 2018 I'm a Google Hangouts man myself. Why? Free calls to and from PSTN in the USA. Every other service charges for this. They even give you a phone number! Do you have a reference for the Skype thing?

Do you have a reference for the Skype thing? Skype also has call forwarding and allows sending messages through SMS if your phone is connected. Not sure if you mean the same thing. Destined 538 Report post Posted September 13, 2018 Hm, I had no problem with that, when I just had to reinstall Win 10 (due to hard disk problems) and, naturally, used Edge only once to download Firefox. On the other hand, I have turned off recommendations as one of the first things I did.

stumpy 234 Report post Posted September 13, 2018 (edited) here's another reason why you shouldn't install windows 10every so often windows 10 will set the keyboard setup to English US, even if its not even installed and you only have English UK or any other language like dutch language dutch keyboard it then changes to English language US keyboard.even if you have keyboard switching keys not set and only one keyboard settings installed, when you are not using it, windows auto changes it back to English US. on us keyboard there's no £ key and @ key is " windows edge does complain when installing firefox, and every so often when opening firefox it will ask if you still want firefox as your default browser, and after updates windows 10 auto opens edge to show whats new, even before virus checker has reloaded after update boot. (very dangerous in my view of virus checker not loading until after internet page is loaded in edge) Edited September 13, 2018 by stumpy

It is an experimental feature, and they are likely testing the waters to see if they can get away with it/how much outrage there will be. EDIT: looks like they're aborting it, for now. https://betanews.com/2018/09/13/microsoft-quietly-stops-interfering-with-chrome-and-firefox-installations-on-windows-10/#comments Edited September 13, 2018 by kano

stumpy 234 Report post Posted September 13, 2018 (edited) since I last posted windows 10 has set my keyboard back to US keyboard from a UK keyboard, and default language was English UK its now back to English US, wont let me pick English UK language as its removed it, doesn't give me the option of re-installing UK Language. Fidcal 168 Report post Posted September 14, 2018 That would be funny if it wasn't so bloody irritating and time wasting. I wonder if M$oft have a keyboard that sends a signal what nationality the keys are and the default is usa. So if win10 doesn't get the signal (from all other keybaords) then you get usa and you have to buy a UK M$oft keyboard to get UK. Wouldn't surprise me. The real reason is they are just plain f dumb. pay amateur programmers a million a year and think that makes them smart. (o did i mention I hate m$soft? Yeah.) As an aside, I'm no longer getting the forum links in the email alerts so I have to manually find these threads. Fortunately, this one is easy to find. Anyone else getting that? Aside 2: Why do internet accounts (like this forum account) keep logging you out? I mean just why? But especially why when it's such a short period. OK I'm here less often but on another forum elsewhere I'm there on that website everyday but the log in times out after about 2 weeks. I don't even know why log ins ever time out? esme 125 Report post Posted October 5, 2018 I set my internet connection as metered on my tablet, it only does updates when I tell it to now, no doubt they'll change that one day But as I only use it for twitter and any music I have on it I copied from my main collection I wouldn't be too heartbroken if it was smitten by a thunderbolt Well apart from wanting to one day get lin*x on it & bin the windows crap so if the gods could arrange the thunderbolt to just smite the software and leave the hardware I'd be ever so grateful
