  1. Hi, I've tried to install the latest version of TDM four times now (no previous installation), each time I get the same error: ERROR: Unexpected CURL error 56 on URL The urls seem to change (examples are http://darkmod.taaki.za.net/release/zipsync/release/release200/tdm_textures_metal01.pk4, /tdm_models02.pk4, /tdm_textures_carpet01.pk4) but the installation always fails around 20% of the way through. Am I doing something wrong? I tried the default mirror and the German mirror (also version 211 just in case). I'm using Windows 10 (64 bit) and don't seem to be having any internet issues that would cause the error. Any help would be appreciated!
  2. Is there something wrong with the forums lately, or is it my browser? I've been having trouble formatting posts, and just now I couldn't format anything at all.

    I'm using Vivaldi.

Usually I have to: select text, click bold, nothing happens, select again, click bold, then it works.

Same for other stuff, like creating spoilers, bullet points, links. Nothing works the first time.

I have no problem. I use Firefox. @Zerg Rush also uses Vivaldi. Have you tried without extensions, or in another browser?

(btw. bold, italic and underline have shortcut keys: Ctrl B, Ctrl I and Ctrl U, you could try that)

  3. I don't think The Last of Us part I is a good game; it is something else in terms of pure audio-visual experience though. The attention to detail is insane, especially in sound and animation.

How is The Last of Us if you play only stealth ?

IMO game isn't really geared towards that; it's a set of small to medium-sized arenas stringed by corridors, where you eliminate enemies quietly, one by one, until everybody's dead and you can loot the area. Maybe there's an NG+ or something like that, where you can ignore gathering resources, but not so much when it's your 1st play-through.

    4. The Black Arrow

      The Black Arrow

Personally, I consider it an overrated "cinematic" wannabe product, it has nothing good let alone innovative in terms of gameplay, and the visuals I could care less, I've played very old games myself.

And the story was just geared up to make you hate on Joel, despite the fact the guy lost his daughter and doesn't want to experience that again, which is why he did that "huge mistake" with not letting Ellie sacrifice herself for a cure. Like seriously, be a father and tell me if you can blame him.
I wanna repeat myself; The story was HEAVILY geared towards a very badly made and pathetic one-side outlook to it.

People can enjoy it for whatever reason, without a doubt, but no way it's a "masterpiece" at all, let alone the second one.

  6. In this hypothetical scenario Embraces Group puts you in charge of the creative team in charge of creating a new Thief game. You don't have to do any coding or any of the complicated boring bits and what you say goes. What would the games plot be? Would it be a sequel? prequel? reboot or maybe something else? What new features would be in the game that we haven't seen before in Thief or The Dark Mod? Can't think of any more question right now but I'm sure you'll have your own interesting ideas beyond anything I've asked.
  7. Do we have one of these? I know we kind of have one for upcoming TDM projects, but not a general game thread. I'll start. Elden Ring:
  8. I'm returning to continue my work, and this silly problem eludes me. Thanks for your help!
  9. The votings for the game awards 2020 are starting. So, what's your game of the year? Mine is clearly Doom Eternal. On highest difficulty, this game gives you the same feeling of acomplishment as Dark Souls and the likes. This FPS-game just rocks and rolls, both due to gameplay and soundtrack (obiously I also voted for Doom Eternal in the best soundtrack category)! Regarding the other nominees: Yes, TLOU 2 was an interesting experience, but game of the year? NO! Hades: The game would've been better had it been a true rogue-like. The way it is currently implemented, to much grind is involved, so that it fails to motivate me on the long-term. FF VII: Haven't played it, yet, as I am waiting for the PC release, but I have a feeling it might be a strong Game of the Year contender, too. Ghost of Tsushima and Animal Crossing: Don't understand why these would deserve the spot. Scrolling further down, I see that "Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order" (technically a 2019 game) is nominated for best action-adventure. That's a definitive yes from me, as I really loved that game, although I think its chances to win are rather slim next to the other nominees.
  10. I have recently installed Dhewm3 (with the Doom 3 demo) and DarkRadiant. I know my way around GTK Radiant and Preditor, so I assumed DarkRadiant would be a walk in the park. However, I'm getting these two problems I never got with the other editors. 1) I have installed DarkRadiant from the package darkradiant-3.7.0-x64.portable.7z. I launched it, configured it to use the Doom 3 demo (Game Type: Doom 3 Demo), selected the folder where the Dhewm3.exe file is located, but it cannot find any textures. 2) If I try to make a test map (a square room with no textures, a player start) and save it, I get an error message that says: "Failed to locate map format module". Subsequently, nothing gets saved. I have pasted the DarkRadiant log at https://pastebin.com/YAGv2u5h . You can see a screenshot showing the problems (error, no textures) at https://imgur.com/a/qVhx4dv. How do I solve these problems?
  11. Dear ChatGPT, What are The Builders in the Dark Mod?

The Builders is a popular game mode in the video game community called "Dark Mod," which is a fan-made tribute to the classic "Thief" series of stealth games. In this game mode, players assume the role of builders who construct structures in a dark and ominous environment while trying to avoid detection by patrolling guards.

The Builders game mode is unique in that it offers players the opportunity to create and design their own levels using the in-game tools and resources provided. Players can experiment with different building materials, construct intricate traps and puzzles, and create their own unique gameplay experiences.

While The Builders game mode is not an official part of the Dark Mod, it has become one of the most popular and well-loved aspects of the game, thanks to its emphasis on creativity, strategy, and stealth.

You guys did not know that, did you?

      Ehhh...

After seeing 2 different versions of the Builders blocks (the mission by Jesps and an asset made by @MirceaKitsune that I can't find anymore), I'm now intriguiged about a new in-game Builder game.

Btw. You should ask about maps. Because there are 2 types of maps in TDM (map file and in-game navigation map).

  12. Hey so I'm trying to play the first mission and I can play it fine but if I die and try to load the game it says "game error couldn't load darkmod211\maps\prologue9.script" What should I do?
  13. My Version 2.10 had an adjustment I installed that changed a display located at the bottom right of the screen from just itemizing Loot to a list of other information that I thought was helpful. But I can't find the file or executable that made the change. I would like to add that to my Version 2.11. I noticed a Modpack by Snatcher's Workshop that had something similar but it wasn't the same. Can anybody help me change ver 2.11 so that I have the same display as shown in the attachment ??
  14. I spent the morning aligning my windows inside and out with the wall brick textures, but after saving and dmap, it still looks off in-game. It's quite bizarre. I tried deleting the .cm and .proc, and running dmap again (several times) but it didn't help. I don't have any dmap errors either. Any ideas what is going on? additional info: rather than adjusting the textures I edited the brushes, grabbed all the relevant vertices and adjusted the height of the window recesses. On the outside of the house I moved the window facades. Everything is appears to be aligned perfectly in DR, but is way off when I run the game.
  15. so I just downloaded the game but every time i boot it up it doesn't work my device is the ASUS x550c it only shows a grey screen i have the intel(R) Core I3 Inside and the Intel (R) HD Graphics 4000
  16. The ability to launch and control TDM from DarkRadiant via the Game Connection interface is very helpful. But at least on Linux (Manjaro / KDE Plasma in my case) it continues to be bugged by crashes and only work intermittently, and last night it suddenly stopped working for good. Hoping we can debug what must be happening before the next release. DR is 3.7.0 (Git commit d9145c3015d945014daeb829f22d8cdb94a2aa8f) while TDM is dev16650-10157. DR successfully contacts the engine each time and attempts to start it up, I can even see the mouse cursor temporarily disappear and the process briefly present in the system monitor. The issue is when the darkmod executable is launched by Radiant, it often crashes immediately after. This might thus be a problem in the TDM engine more than in DR. I'm dealing with two types of crashes so far: Until now it was a cooldown effect, I can't start TDM from DR more often than once every 3 or so minutes. If start it up too frequently I see a brief flash of the screen but the main menu doesn't get to open, about 10 seconds later DR gives me the error "Timeout when connecting to just started TheDarkMod process". I have no idea where the information on how frequently I'm starting it is even stored: I can shut down both DR and TDM to ensure neither have open processes running, yet even if I start DR up again and launch TDM from the Game Connection menu too soon it remembers and throws this error. Since yesterday on top of that, the process now permanently fails with another error. In its case I even see the main menu for a split second before TDM instantly closes. DR throws the error "Game restart failed: Connection lost unexpectedly". I even tried with fresh settings for both DR and TDM as well as restarting the machine, but despite not updating anything not even any new OS package updates nor changing firewall settings, this suddenly appeared and continues to occur.
  17. If I try to select a mission in the Mission pulldown selector in the Game Setup dialog, the list is not sorted alphabetically. As stated, this is DR 3.7 in Linux.
  18. This is the 4th time I tried installing the game and it always gives me this error no matter the settings I pick in the installer. idk what to do anymore.
  19. Nominations are in... What are your predictions? https://thegameawards.com/nominees I bet God of War is going to homerun this thing. Elden Ring is just too long ago and now God of War is all the hype. Best RPG for sure goes to Elden Ring, and maybe best art direction to A Plage Tale, but the remainder, it has to be God of War. Hopefully my Indie-Favorite SIFU wins one or two awards, too. Neon White also deserves a win in my book. Best adaption has to go to either Arcane or Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Edgerunners is not as good I think, but same as with Elden Ring, the hype around Arcane already dried out, whereas everyone is still kind of talking about Edgerunners.
  20. On social media, I often find myself surprised how many people let their kids consume content not really appropriate for their age. A very recent example was news of a five year old having beaten Bloodborne, which is rated 16 years and older. While that is admittedly an impressive feat, I can't help but wonder what kind of parents let their five year old spend hours upon hours in front of a console playing a horror game? Or might this just be a cultural thing? Socio-economic? I think the users of our forum are very adult and intelligent, so I would like to know your opinion on this topic.
  21. Since Aluminum directed me here ( https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/9082-newbie-darkradiant-questions/page/437/#comment-475263 ) can we have unlimited renderer effects? Well, maybe not unlimited, by maybe 3-5? Thanks.

Since I wasn't the one mainly asking, I'll just cite you in the original thread instead.

There already is a kind of sorting, sort nearest, sort decal, sort <n>. For things like windows and such, sort nearest should probably have the desirable affect, though looking through multiple translucent shaders might kill performance.

Is having multiple render effects really killing performance that badly? I don't understand. You're saying that if I have two transparent objects side-by-side, then they'll just count as two render effects, but when combined, they somehow become something much more difficult to render?

Never-the-less, unless we're talking some kind of infinite portal problem, why not let the mapper choose how much he wants to kill performance? Just warn him against putting too many effects close together.

  24. I assume all of you have at least heard about it already or seen some pictures. Neural networks that generate decent looking images from a text prompt and do some other things (like modifying existing images) are becoming mainstream. They cannot generate photorealistic hi-res images yet, but the development pace is incredibly fast, so they will probably get reasonably close within a few years. The big thing that happened recently is that Stability AI released their implementation of such neural network, Stable Diffusion, for free as open-source. The quality is not the best, but it's good enough and all the other ones are behind a paywall, waitlist or just a closed source service and not good enough. You need a GPU (preferably Nvidia) with at least 4 GB of RAM to run it, so nothing special. The potential implications to society are big (and not necessarily positive), but honestly I don't really want to start the discussion because the internet is already full of it and so many people are surprisingly emotional about it. Go to Twitter if you want to see (you don't). I'm more interested in what you think about using it in game development. I know that in some commercial studios it's already being used by concept artists, because it's firstly a reasonably efficient inspiration machine and secondly the images it produces are not licensed (and it doesn't matter that much in pre-production anyway), so if you manage to create something good, you can just paint over it to finetune and use it. But it can do other things. It can do inpainting, which can be used to remove seams or blemishes in phototextures. It can also generate seamless textures (there's a switch that causes every generated image to be periodic). There are no examples of people using them in games or renders yet because that feature is less than a week old. Personally I tried using it to add dirt and imperfections to a render that was too clean, and that was a success as well. Adding dirt to a render is not exactly useful in most of games, but I bet it could be adapted to add some grime to game textures as well. Any ideas? Have you tried it already?
  25. Can anyone help with the following? When running make, I get this when it gets to OpenGLRenderSystem: Never mind. I built it again without errors.
