  1. Hi, The FAQ for getting TDM running on 64-bit Linux (which is now very common) http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=FAQ#Does_it_run_in_64_Bit_Linux.3F simply says: "Install the ia32 package". However, that package hasn't been part of Ubuntu for many years now. Having scoured the forums, it seems that the actual answer for how to do it on modern Ubuntus starts with: sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install libc6:i386 libncurses5:i386 libstdc++6:i386 libpng12-0:i386 libx11-6:i386 libxext6:i386 libxxf86vm1:i386 But then I get stick with an "Unable to initialize OpenGL" error, and I can't figure out which package to install to make it go away. Can someone please post, and add to the FAQ, a step-by-step set of instructions for getting TDM running on a stock copy of both the latest LTS and the latest normal 64-bit Ubuntu? Thanks :-) Gerv

  3. Hello! I've been having a host of weird AA/ graphics problems with 2.06. Ill post them here and create bug reports when necessary (sorry if these are redundant in other threads) Windows 10. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980. (Latest drivers) TDM 2.06 (Both 32 and 64 bit) Problem 1- AA forces fullscreen - While in windowed mode + (advanced render features off / SS/ Post/ect) - If I click AA on, it forces fullscreen mode even after restart. I have to disable AA and then restart to get back into window mode. Problem 2- AA and my skyboxes -While AA is turned on + (forced fullscreen, advanced render features off). My skyboxes get this weird windowed effect in them. If I turn bloom on, the effect is very noticeable and creates a huge FPS drop. Some screenshots: Cauldron: With Bloom: Volta and the Stone: with bloom: I did try removing the fog light I use in the skybox, but the problem persisted. Problem 3- Water shader - All advanced features off including AA. I get these very weird black lines on my water shader. Material file: volta_water_material.txt I want to make sure these are legit mod bugs before filing reports, so please let me know if you have the same problems or if these are already filed and being tracked. Thanks!

Did the TDM team removed D3's internal Joypad feature? (tdm works only with systemkey binders for joysicks)

Thanks to shadrach, i got my joypad working in TDM on steam link!

  5. Hi there, all! I've been enjoying The Dark Mod for years now, and finally got myself a brand spanking new computer system, pretty high end stuff. I had been using Windows 8 on the last rig and I had gotten TDM to run, but now I'm having problems. I've done the usual things, of running it as administrator and making sure it has write access to the directory, but whenever I try to play a mission, like St. Lucia, it goes through the intro, lets me pick equipment, starts to load and shows progress, then just drops me back to the main menu -- with no sound. I've got a geForce 780 Ti video card now, and I can get other games to do 3D just fine -- not sure if I've gotten any other OpenGL game to work yet, though. Also, sometimes it drops me back to the main menu, with no sound, and kills my mouse's ability to move. I need to sleep/wake up or reboot to get it back. Keyboard stays fine. I've pulled up the console, and here's the last few lines of the console that I see when it drops me back to the main menu: removed 2 degenerate triangles removed 16 degenerate triangles removed 10 degenerate triangles --------- Game Map Shutdown ---------- WARNING:Door atdm_mover_door_2 is not within a valid AAS area ModelGenerator memory: No LOD entries. --------- Game Map Shutdown done ----- ERROR:idSoundCache Load: error 40963 loading data into OpenAL hardware buffer -------------------------------------- WARNING:idSession: triggering mainmenu watchdog I'm going to guess that I've gotta install some more runtimes to get it working. Anyone have any clues? Oh, and the install directory is C:\Games\darkmod, so no issues with spaces, and I'm running 2.01 so it supposedly fixed the bug where I needed to run it as c:\darkmod...
  6. Hi all, Skaruts requested that the Wiki entry on skins is not that easy to understad, so I tried to update it. This would be the (unformatted) updated version. I am thinking about adding a specific example later on, but for now it is not included. I would appreciate any constructive criticism before I actually replace the olde version! The skins functionality in D3 allows a single model to have a number of textures ("skins") which can be selected from a dialog in the editor. This provides ease-of-use for mappers and (possibly) reduced memory usage as the model only needs to be loaded once. A skin file has the following basic structure: skin [name] { model [complete path of the model] [material path of texture to be replaced] [complete path of replacement texture] } The title has the format skin [your_skin_name] Your skin name has to be unique and like all definitions in TDM should not contain any hyphens (-). In the inner part of the brackets, you first define for which model the skin can be applied. If you do not define this, the skin will not show in the model menu in DR. At this place you can define several models at once, if they share any textures you want to replace. Make sure to use the complete path of the model. The easiest way to do this (and to avoid any spelling errors) is by inserting the model into DR and copying the "path" spawnarg to your skin file. In order to replace textures, you first need to know which textures are present in a given model. One easy way to do that is to open the model preview window in DR. On the left side, right beneath the models list, there is a list of all materials used in this model. To replace a texture, you insert the whole path of the texture you want to replace and, seperated with a space (or for better readability a tab), directly write the path of the material you want as a replacement. Each texture that does not get listed here, is not replaced. If you want any part of the model to not appear at all you can use the nodraw material ("textures/common/nodraw"). Errors: If the model should appear completely black in game, this means that TDM cannot find your definition for the skin. Check for spelling errors! Similarly, if any part of your model appears black, the defined texture cannot be found. Keep in mind, that any custom texture you want to use has to have a material definition!
  7. Hello everyone. So I bought myself a new trackball mouse, the Elecom Huge M-HT1URBK. So far I am pretty happy with it, but I've run into an issue using the mouse software that comes with it. Although the installer has selected english as standard installation language (and I have kept it like that) and the whole install process is performed in english, the software is using japanese language instead. The program itself does not allow a change of language. I've already contacted their support and although they are eager to help me, they are of no big help thus far, so I thought I may ask here. Some information: I am using Windows 7 Professional 64bit, german version. I've already tried setting the language for non-unicode programs to english. Installing additional language packs is not possible under Professional, at least not in an easy way, and I don't want to change my system language just to use a mouse program. I've also searched the regestry (searchword "elecom") and found one entry 'language', but that was set to english. Maybe one of you folks have an idea what might cause the issue and how to probably solve it. Thanks in advance.
  8. So I'm trying to install this on linux and it seems to start strong but then immediately cease getting new data. I've left it overnight and it still indicates the same files, I don't think it got any new content. Is there some means of specifying mirrors or for that matter a means of going to a mirror directly to get what I need?
  9. Who manages the TDM twitter account? as it hasent had an update in a very very long time.

Nope. I created my own Twitter to try and promote but it never gained much traction. The "official" Twitter is owned by New Horizon as I recall.

  10. Any recommendations on whether to just update 1.08 to 2.0, or delete 1.08 and doom and do the standalone 2.0 install? I'm torn on this. Thanks!
  11. NO HONOR AMONG THIEVES 3.0 "An old friend of mine approached me the other night with some interesting information. Apparently, our beloved Governor, Archibald Cloist, is a whore monger and a liar. Nothing out of the norm for Bridgeport’s politicians, but there’s an interesting string attached to all of this. The local religious authorities, the “Builders”, have found him out, and have been paid out by the Governor himself to keep their mouth shut. The Builder in question is the Arch-Bishop himself, “Lavonte Duchane”. These two really seem like my type, bribing and blackmailing away at each other. So much so I think I’ll join them. I highly doubt if the situation were made public it would fare well for either of their careers. Archibald would lose the noble’s financial support and the public trust, and the Arch-Bishop would probably face prison time and “Builder Scourging." So tonight’s the night. I’m going to break into a religious maniac’s Cathedral, black mail a Governor, and rob everyone blind in the process." 13. Goes to update his install of 2.0 beta. Starts to get annoyed that it is taking over an hour to do. Scrolls up and notices he accidentally typed keep-kirrors and is now DOWNGRADING to 1.8 as a result. Woops! This is why you keep backups, folks. I can just retrieve it from my external HDD...

I back up my external HD every month and lock it in my draw at work so if there is a break in or fire in my home all my data is safe at work. I also have a USB in my wallet whose sole function is to save the latest version of my TDM map onto once a week. Got all my bases covered :)

  14. When I run the updater it goes to an error telling me to check if the file is set to read only. Can someone step me through how to change it from read only? Or is there another way? Whenever I uncheck the read only box it just goes back to read only. I never had a problem updating before on my previous computer, but I now have a new computer where I have to run TDM and other applications as the administrator. (Dell Alienware running Windows 10) Thanks!
  15. Has anyone experienced the situation where you are playing the game and then you tap "T" for lockpick and you get nothing? What about loading a mission and then when you go to turn left or right with the mouse the view does not change? Does anyone have any troubleshooting tips of advice for me? Is there a way to reset all controls to "factory"?

  17. Even though we have 2 other Win10 related threads (Win10 tech, and M$ data slurp), I consider this issue important enough to warranty its own thread. It was the case that the infamous Win10 download/updgrade that came down via windows update was optional, but as mentioned in the M$ data slurp thread this is now a recomended update. So if a user has set Windows update to automatically install optional updates as well as recommended updates, the following points/issue's arrise - Some metered connections provide as little as 40GB of data allowance a month - this unwanted & unessesary update will eat into said allowance, not that M$ gives a flying F***.If you are on a slow connection, 2Mb or lower - this update will be take a ages, thus will impact any application that connects to the internet and potentially the whole PC if its a low end PC.Some Windows 8 computers(mostly tablets/laptops) have as little as 32GB of storage space. Should the user decline the installation of Windows 10 after it has been downloaded the update will not be automatically deleted and so -Windows 8 needs 20gb for 32bit and 24gb for 64bit, and if a user has any application/games installed with this insidious update they will potentially run out of storage space which causes another set of problems. And M$ seems to have missed the point - if a user dosen't want the update then this data should be deleted period and the update never offered again.M$ has proven time and time again, they can't be trusted to roll out updates that don't break/brick your Windows installation(and this is just another example of thier untrustworthyness) - so I am strongly urging/recomending that unless your comfertable with manually monitoring windows updates then simply untick optional/recomended updates and only have Security updates ticked. If you are a Windows 7 or 8/8.1 user, then you have the option of turning off automatic updates - The automatic Windows 10 download has been shown to take up between 3.5GB and 6GB on a user’s computer (placed in the hidden "$Windows.~BT" folder, under the windows folder). One of M$ few and pointless arguments is applications like GoogleChrome/Firefox update in the background, but they are apps not a whole bloody OS and we have the option of "turning that shit off"...!!! And on that subject I recomend the following - GoogleChrome -Disable the updates withing the applciation - http://www.wintips.org/disable-google-chrome-automatic-updateOr go the whole hog and disable the googleupdate service that always seems to be running in the background (as I dont trust google, I update when I feel like it)Start>Run>Services.msc disable services gupdate & gupdateRright click on Computer>Manage>Task Scheduler, left click to open and then select Task Scheduler Library and either select and disable or delete both the Google services listed.Firefox - Click on the main menu>Tools>Options>Advanced>Update>Firefox Update - then select your option. Nice and simple, no f***ing about like the above
  18. brain-damaged bug of the day: I want to install encrypted Linux. The installer force-exits because "unsafe swap is detected". There are zero swap partitions on the disk, zilch, nada, nothing. Yet it still will not let me pass. The obvious conclusion is that the module for compressed memory is being detected as swap space, when it is no less safe than the rest of the memory in the machine. grrrrr

    1. kano

      kano

This is why as developers, you should warn the user about potential problems and not just out-right force close the program if an undesired condition is detected.

    2. kano

      kano

For anyone else who encounters this, the workaround is to pop open a terminal BEFORE launching the installer and run swapoff -a. Yes, even if there are no partitions on the disk.

  19. Hello guys, I know this is not the TDM engine but is based on idtech 4 has well so i hope you guys can help me. I'm trying to create a new class of object in a separate file, for that i created a new .header file and a new .cpp file for my class, i then tried to copy what idSoftware has done for their own classes but no matter what i do, visual studio never compiles and gives me a bunch of errors but what really confuses me is that the errors point to the original engine code no my own code!? Is if my files are breaking the id code not mine. This is what i'm doing: header class myclass : public idclass{ public: CLASS_PROTOTYPE( myclass); myclass(){Init()}; // constructor ~myclass(){Init()}; // destrutor members vars methods / functions } ///************* cpp file #include "../idlib/precompiled.h" #pragma hdrstop #include "Game_local.h" // myclass header is called from inside here CLASS_DECLARATION( idclass, myclass) END_CLASS void myclass::Init(){} etc. I did the same thing using structs instead (afaik they are just like classes) but directly from inside the player.h and player.cpp file and that worked fine, but now i wanted to make it a separate class and i'm having a bunch of problems, i most say that i'm a beginner c++ and OOP so i most be forgetting something basic, or i'm forgetting to declare my class in some other id file, any help would be appreciated.
