  1. So, you've been working for weeks or months and finally have a fan mission that you're happy with. Now what do you do? 1. Playtest (in private) You've obviously been testing things yourself as you build, but it's important to get a few fresh perspectives before releasing your mission. Other players will try things that you never thought of, and will help you decide if your mission is too easy or difficult. They can also spot texture misalignments, floating objects, and other mapping pitfalls that we all fall into from time to time. Don't just post a link to your mission in the public forums, however. Lots of people are bound to download it and play it without realizing it is still in the playtest phase, and then complain about any bugs. We recommend you post a message asking for beta-testers, and then email them a link to your mission. It's probably also best to handle feedback through private messages; even with spoiler tags, things inevitably slip out. 2. Test the Release version It's very easy to make a last-minute, minor tweak to your mission, and then upload it, only to find out that you forgot to dmap, and now your aas is out of date. Oops! If you change anything, it needs to go through a couple of testers. This does slow down the release process, right at the moment where you're most excited. But you don't want to be in a position of dozens of people trying your mission with a last minute bug that slipped through. 3. Submit your mission .pk4 for hosting Where should you host your pk4? Good question. There are several public sites that will host small pk4 files. Mediafire darklurker 4. Post a Release Announcement Post a new message in the Fan Mission forum with the following title: "Fan Mission: [mission title] by [author] ([release date in yyyy/mm/dd format])" The first post should include a short synopsis of your mission, perhaps with a couple screenshots, as well as download links. 5. Add your FM to the Fan Mission List. Other Considerations A few other miscellaneous details... External Material: If you use external material (textures, sounds, models, etc) that isn't part of the mod repository, and you didn't make it yourself, get permission. We won't host or link to any missions that use copyrighted material, and it's not a good way to make a name for yourself. Credit: Be sure to give credit for anything you use that you didn't make (other than the stuff in the main mod itself). That's just good form. If someone helped you write your readables or made a loading image for you, credit them too. The TDM Website: Don't post asking why your FM has not been added to the official FM page on the Dark Mod website the day it is released. As the number of TDM FMs grows, it will take longer to ensure that new missions are copyright-issue-free, so it may take some time for new missions to appear.

Did the TDM team removed D3's internal Joypad feature? (tdm works only with systemkey binders for joysicks)

Yes, most of them are in the current version (often with improvements), so they no longer had to be included in the mission archives.

Fiasco at Fauchard Street went from 62 to 14 MB, and so on. Quite impressive.

  4. As the title says, what are your personal underrated Dark Mod (and Thief fan missions in general if you want) missions? Missions that are good/great/fun that never got a lot of attention or have otherwise faded away, in essence. Personally, I'll give a nod to Briarwood Cathedral by buck28. Not the best mission, and some of your goals can be obtuse, but it somehow hit this vein of pure *fun* that I can't articulate well. The same with his first mission, Lockton Manor. I'll also give a nod to Lords and Legacy by Kvorning. A fun, complex city/mansion mission that the author dropped on us all and then vanished without a trace. It's very fun and I'm tempted to give it another go one of these days, and it's a shame that I don't see it mentioned more often.
  5. I have fond memories of Raven Software's old FPS shooters, Heretic and Hexen... especially the latter. Something about that "dark gothic" element, really worked for me. The atmosphere of Hexen was amazing. I never got around to playing "Hexen 2", though. Is it still worth playing? Are there any mods or "fan fixes" etc? Chime in, folks.. I'll even take suggestions for similar games, or games on the horizon...
  6. Thomas Porter is back in a TDM FM called... The Phrase Book by Sotha Release notes: If you find something called "softened lead ball" do note that it will not KO AI in TDM 1.07. Once 1.08 comes with its new features, the ball should work. While waiting for 1.08, the ball might still work as a distraction. The mission uses heavily RITs, so guard activity should be more interesting and challenging. The mission randomizes the location of few critical objects upon map start, so that coupled with the AI RIT behavior the mission should be more replayable than any other missions TDM has seen thus far. Please use spoiler tags. I do not recommend you read further as someone always fails to use spoiler tags. Download: There was a bug in the initial release. New version is here: Use the ingame downloader to get it. Fixes: Increased font size to make briefing easier to read. Fixed a stupid unpickable door issue. ENJOY!
  7. Of Thieves and Rubies A campaign of four small missions for Thief 2. Author Silencium18. Religious Conflict A pack of two missions for Thief 2. Author cardia1. IMHO, Darkfate is the place go for T1/2/3 mission news as it covers missions sometimes not mentioned on ttlg, see below for the news link for the above missions - - http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=en&prev=_dd&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=ru&tl=en&u=http://darkfate.org/news&usg=ALkJrhhLxde4ynVOUxhekb9ZX01EkZawbg
  8. The Rats Triumphant (Halloween Contest 2015 Mission) Download links: MEGA (11 MB) ...and the mission downloader Design notes: The idea for this mission came from an old house in a side street where I go to my daily work. It had been dilapidated as long as I can remember, first as a home for beggars and some fairly disreputable people, then condemned and its windows bricked up, and now finally in the process of being demolished. As I went to my work and back, I could watch it disappear day by day, exposing its layers of construction until finally only one wall remained. But for all its ruined state and inhabitants, it had a simple elegance, and I decided to preserve it in the form of a fan mission. (more on building the mission later) Special thanks: to Bikerdude for multiple performance-related and aesthetic fixes. My playtersters, Bikerdude (again), nbohr1more and Premier.

  10. TWO new fan missions in one day?! :D You people are astounding!

  11. Hi I've recently started doing Let's Plays of The Dark Mod missions, and they've gotten a lot of comments and views. In my latest one, "A Score to Settle", I mentioned on a side note, totally randomly, that it would be fun to do voice acting for a game character. I got a comment from "b1k3rdude" regarding this: "Glad you liked playing SH mission, and yes would love you to do some lines for us, so come on over to the TDM forums and ask for either Spings or myself!" Well, I'm happily taking up that offer, and asking for Springheel or b1k3rdude, hopefully with the result of getting to do some voice acting . Thanks a bunch in advance, I think it sounds like a lot of fun. I've been thoroughly enjoying The Dark Mod with my playthroughs and would love to add something to it. 12. Right now the only Campaign I played was "No Honour Amongst Thieves" if that information is needed. Is there actually a Campaign that has a shop in which you can buy Thieves' Gear from the start AND on the consecutive missions? Very similar to the Thief games. That would be great. Or is that, for now, not possible?
  13. I'm stuck with a craptop, and can't run everything, I allready looked up the wiki page about performance so please don't spam it in this thread. Missions like st. lucia run ok with some fps drops sometimes in the outside areas but it's playable since most of the tension is inside. Not looking for much detail but it would be cool if the creator somehow still managed to make it look pretty.
  14. I was listening to The Official Podcast featuring Cr1tikal, now known as penguinz0 on YouTube. Episode 190. The theme of the episode was conspiracy theories like Chemtrails, Flat Earth, and Anti-Vaccinations. The hilarity of the premise of some of the ideas they posted could be made into Comedy Missions. For example, a powerful alliance of both Rogue Mages and Extremist Builders learn that the world really ISN'T flat, but they believe that in order for the Builder to return, the world must be MADE flat. So, a bunch of ridiculously stupid idea loving wizards and religious folk try to complete a massive spell to literally flatten a town as a "test". Meanwhile, a "raw water" craze with the locals of said town, coupled with an anti-healer movement, results in a damn zombie plague outbreak, and it's up to the Thief player to steal the crystal or relic that's powering their "town-flatter" ritual, resulting in the ritual failing. After, a squad of Official Builders arrive to deal with the zombie outbreak and rogue wizards & heretics. The entire town of morons get burned in fire by the Church, and you make off with all their money in the Chaos. What do you think?
  15. I recently updated from 2.05 to 2.06. Then, all my previously downloaded missions (which I think is most of them) disappeared from my in-game list. I can't see squat! I checked and they are all in the FMs folder where they've always been. Also when I click on download missions, none show up. And I know that two have been released since I updated. Help!
  16. So I just decided to sorta start clean (that is, download the latest edition of TDM which, since it really isn't a mod but a stand alone game could just be called, "The Dark Stand Alone" but that would be rather awkward... but I digress). After loading it up I went in and updated all of the available missions, and this is when I made an interesting discovery. MFMF! So I have two and sometimes three instances of the same mission in my directory. Some of them have a check for having been completed, others of the same name do not. A few are obviously updated versions, but several have identical file names with no indication of a version number. The real treat, however, is file size. I have three versions of "Somewhere Above the City"; one is an update, two are not, and all three have vastly different file sizes. When I run into these duplicates I have some that read 18MB right alongside a version reading 226MB! While I'm guessing the easiest thing to do is wipe entirely and use the downloader to rebuild my list, I was wondering what could cause the huge discrepancy in file sizes (yes, each version seems to work, even if one is lacking 100MB in content) and is there a way to prevent TDM from downloading duplicates in the future?
  17. Did a great find today: Quake 4 mods for dummies. Now online readable. http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/5576-book-quake-4-mods-for-dummies/?p=412644

  18. Does anyone know where to go to download Thief 2 missions? I can't find the old sites, except thiefmissions.com, but that hasn't been updated since last year
  19. Just wondering. It looks like FMs are downloading in the zip format now from fidcal.com. Has it always been that way?
  20. Any Halloween missions are about to be released?

He changed ita long while back, it was so he was using the same name as he uses on other forums.

  21. Hi everyone. As 2.0 is standing outside the door I'd like to convert my missions to the I18N format. I'd promised that Tels but always forgot about it before release (too much enthusiasm I guess ). Anyways, as we have quite a couple of non-native english people here and I have to fix the maps anyways, I wanna do this now. The problem is that I can only provide a german translation, as this is the only language I speak (beneath the terrible english you are forced to read here ). So if anyone is interested to add translations to other languages as well, just post her.
