  1. As the title says, I made an ebuild for The Dark Mod a while ago, figured I might as well post about it here in case anyone here is using Gentoo (or wants to adapt it for other distributions). The game gets installed system-wide and files are symlinked to the user's home directory whenever the game is started after an update (or for the first time), so the game files are only in one location but also users' save states don't conflict. The ebuild itself is here: https://git.sr.ht/~dblsaiko/ebuilds/tree/master/games-rpg/thedarkmod, and you can install the game by enabling my Portage overlay and then emerging the games-rpg/thedarkmod package: # eselect repository enable 2xsaiko # (alternatively, add the repo using layman) # emerge games-rpg/thedarkmod
  2. If it's supposed to be an octagon, I don't think the corners need to be bevelled. Certainly it looks much better to bevel square corners, but the angles of an octagon don't look bad imo. If you want a smooth cylinder though, the default cylinder patch has 16 sides, which looks smooth enough in game. That would be easier than bevelling 8 corners. Speaking of smoothing; I was pleasantly surprised to find that if you make a model in Blender with smooth-shading ticked, then export an ase file, it will retain the smooth shading when imported to darkradiant.
  3. Query: when playing a level, how sharp must a corner in the level geometry be for it to look bad to you? I'm sculpting my current FM from scratch as there aren't many prefab modules fitting my theme and the question has been nagging me for a bit. I've been using bevel patches to smooth out 90 degree corners made of brickwork for a slightly more realistic look to them, but I'm not sure where else I should be smoothing out the angles of my level geometry. Most notably I have a larger room where the main center piece is a large octagonal tower made of brick and I'm unsure if players will find its sharp angles unappealing to look at despite its ornamentation. Try as I might to smooth out those corners, an octagon is still an octagon.
  4. That is my recollection too. The i18n system was basically Tels' personal pet project (hence the Perl script which is unmaintained because nobody in the world except Tels and Larry Wall have any interest in writing code in Perl). Because of the various implementation problems and general user-unfriendliness, Greebo didn't approve of merging it into the main mod, so it became a sort of optional extra that individual mappers could use by accessing various resources on Tels' personal server.
  5. Here's my first FM. A small and easy mission, inspired by Thief's Den and The Bakery Job, where you must find and steal a cook's recipe book in order to save a friend from going out of business. Download: Mediafire (sk_cooks.pk4) TDM Website's Mission Page The in-game mission downloader Thanks to: The people who helped me get this far, both in the forums and on Discord. The beta testers: MirceaKitsune, Mat99, Baal, wesp5, Cambridge Spy, jaxa, grodenglaive, Acolytesix ( Per the author in the beta testing thread. ) Skaruts has given permission to the TDM Team to add Subtitles or Localization Strings to this mission. (No EFX Reverb.) If anyone from the Community or TDM team wishes to create these we will gladly test them and update the mission database.
  6. I detect two use cases where the script is limited: Trying to blackjack AI on the move (players may want to lean forward) Trying to pickpocket AI on the move (players may want to lean forward) The proper implementation of a Lean Modifier Key should be: If the player is moving and the Lean Modifier Key is pressed, the player leans while moving. If the player is not moving and the Lean Modifier Key is pressed, the player simply leans.
  7. God knows since when have I last registered or posted on a traditional internet forum, but had to do so to pay my respects for the developers and map makers of this game. I have no history of the original thief series, and had no expectations for the mod. This is the first FM I played. After running around in a bit of a haste, becoming increasingly desperate of the complexity of the map, I learned to enjoy the feeling of being lost, calmed down and started to pay attention to the surroundings and listening to the ambient sounds and music. It is a truly immersive experience. I do have to admit that I could not find the entrance to the mansion, and had to resolve to a walkthrough to figure out how to enter, and at the end of the day did not manage to finish the mission. This mod is a great achievement, thank you for all the work and passion you have put into it.
  8. Wasn't "Megatextures" the reason Doom 2016 (IdTech 6) takes years to load though, even on a high-class SSD? I've then heard that Megatextures were scrapped out in Doom Eternal (IdTech 7), which apparently could add to the fact it loads incredibly fast.
  9. So - if - "The Lieutenant" is in need for some guy - to find trails of misplaced or forgotten stuff & leaks - ways one could leave without permission or ways that should open but don´t - to fullfill his Quest to find (whatever) he is searching for --- I´d like to assist him !
  10. Here's mine, also 3 monitors but I only use 2 for DR: single XY view on the first monitor; switch between XY views using CTRL-Tab Camera and all other tools on 2nd monitor - now that everything is a tab no need to tile everything 3rd monitor for other non-DR stuff (like the forum )
  11. That almost works perfectly. A slight modification completely solves the issue for me: $player1.setImmobilization("missionspecific", IM_ATTACK | IM_WEAPON_SELECT); THANK YOU @stgatilov!!! I'll fix that mission tomorrow.
  12. Complicated, heavily linked to the mission: ahouseoflockedsecrets byanyothername ARROW_ZOOMDELAY (from 6 down to 3): cauldron_v2_2 good hazard moongate northdale1 northdale2 prize seeking snowed_inn written
  13. It's taking too long for Beta 3 for Hidden Hands: Blood and Metal to come out, so I'll test this one out in the meantime.
  14. Maybe they don't notice, but under the hood it modifies core behavior without telling. Like I said, I think it would be nice to be informed about such things.
  15. If the change is small, it should especially be mentioned, because it's harder to notice, but obviously there is a change, because otherwise it was not implemented. I'm not saying it's necesary for everything, but this falls under standard gameplay behavior changes.
  16. It would be nice if mission authors at least document what and why they override. So the player can decide to remove such overrides and get a more vanilla experience.
  17. There are 10 released FMs that use custom arrow scripts for a variety of reasons. With this current dev build, if you try to use the bow, it just doesn't work. It's broken
  18. Hello @Filizitas first of all : i fell in love to your Avatar and i wish you all the best for now and the future it´s more than a year ago - i discovered you where doing some special stuff - but i´ve not been in the forum for a long time in between . the last days i had a closer look to what you're doing ! and WOW immediately I looked for your downloads and immediately looked into them - wonderful but now there are 2 questions : 1. what happened to the german version in Delightfyl v.0.0.7.6 ( it seems v.0.0.7.5. is not anymore to download) 2. how to save in last linked Project (Project-SITN.exe) herzliche Grüße bissous Bergante
  19. We are proud to announce the release of: The Dark Mod 2.12 ! The 2.12 development cycle introduced many large code overhaul projects. Most of these were to lay the groundwork for future fixes and optimizations. The final release is yet another leap in performance over the already impressive 2.10 and 2.11 releases. A full changelog can be viewed here, but some highlights include: The Dark Mod 2.12 is a major step forward for mission designers! The culling system has been extensively overhauled to ensure that your CPU and GPU are not wasting resources rendering unseen geometry, lights, and shadows. Some of our best map optimization experts have achieved similar performance gains to what this new culling system does but it is a rare skill and we have even managed to improve performance on missions that were generally regarded as “well optimized”. Mission authors both new and old can follow standard mapping practices with no need to dive deep into sophisticated optimization techniques even for some pretty challenging scenarios such as wide open areas and long views. Players will immediately notice many missions that have made their system struggle with FPS now may be running much more smoothly! Smoother controls for players! Also during the 2.12 development cycle, work has been done to make controls more seamless and accessible. Frob can now use hold or click actions to use items. Once you get used to the mechanic, it will be hard to go back to using a separate “use key”. Mantling is now smoother, faster, and less prone to cause the player to clip through geometry. Leaning is now more subtle and less prone to cause motion sickness. To reduce the tedium of shuffling knocked out AI around to search for loot, you can now configure TDM to automatically loot any frobbed AI. A special thanks must go out to community member Geep! Over the course of 2.12 development, Geep has created subtitles for nearly all AI barks along with developing testing tools and procedures for this gargantuan task! You can see these changes in action by changing the Subtitles setting to “On” ( rather than “Story” ) on the Audio settings page. Geep also provided substantial feedback for our GUI and subtitle design process and edited font data to improve text quality overall. Datiswous has complimented the massive work by Geep to create AI bark subtitles by creating mission story subtitles for a large number of missions. Thank you! Turrets are now natively supported in The Dark Mod and can be paired with Security Cameras! Finally, the nasty 2.11 bug that caused AI to allow arrows to pass through them at certain angles was fixed by Joebarnin! Your assassin style play-throughs should be far less frustrating. See also, our 2.12 Feature discussions: To UPDATE, simply run the tdm_installer.exe file in your darkmod folder. Note that tdm_update.exe is no longer supported, but you can download the new installer from the Downloads page if you don’t have it yet. Please be aware that old saved games will not be compatible with 2.12, so finish any missions you might be in the middle of first! Also, some missions created prior to 2.12 may need to be updated so they will be playable in 2.12. Use the in-game mission downloader to check for updates.
  20. Yeah, we could change ARROW_ZOOMDELAY from 6 down to 3 in core, after a good debate. Or have an optional mod that applies to all missions.
  21. "...to a robber whose soul is in his profession, there is a lure about a very old and feeble man who pays for his few necessities with Spanish gold." Good day, TDM community! I'm proud to release my first FM: "The Terrible Old Man", an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's short story of the same name. This is a short, 30-45 minute mission in which you are the getaway driver in a team of three small-time thieves. You and your associates were fortunate enough to overhear rumors of a famously wealthy and frail old man, but things change when your cohorts do not return from what is supposed to be their easiest and most lucrative job. Now it's up to you to brave the old man's house and find your associates. Download: The in-game mission downloader TDM Website's Mission Page Dropbox Special Thanks: The kind beta testers: Cambridge Spy, stgatilov, xlm, wesp5, nbohr1more, and Dragofer. peter_spy and Dragofer for answering my endless barrage of editor questions while learning DR. The TDM Discord for their warm welcome. Ending stinger courtesy of Zapsplat. Content Warnings: Enjoy!
  22. Actually I think I found what's causing issues with my textures: DR changes the texture's Horizontal and Vertical Shift when a face gets slanted. E.g., my test door is facing -Y and sitting flat on the ground, which is at 0 in Z, so the v-shift is 0. When I move the bottom vertices of the door 8 units forward, and then re-fit the texture, the v-shift turns to 4 (3.97241). If I do the same but backward, the v-shift turns to 90.7035. But these values depends on the distance the face is from the world origin, and sometimes if I move the top vertices instead, the values don't change. I can't make sense of it... The other editors don't do this, so the plugin's import code doesn't account for it. Do you think you could help me understand the logic behind this? If I could understand it, maybe I could get the plugin working with it.
  23. I wasn't really thinking about cohesiveness. i was trying to give the game a more Golden touch like in DXHR. I'm using Cinetool Lut which has many options for color combination. Each one makes the game look and feel different and it's a great Reshade Tool.
  24. I was looking into this a bit more and conclude that the translation system in itself is actually an universal external data system. So instead of xdata, you could use a #str_someword and then reference to that in the /strings/fm/english.lang file. Well I guess it's probably not really news for some of us. Edit: This actually works fine: File english.lang for Thief's Den "#str_Nobody crosses me! Must get back Frothley's scepter Creep stole off me." "Nobody crosses me! Must get back Frothley's scepter Creep stole off me." Then in the objective editor you add #str_ before every objective text. This way it's easier and you can still see which is which.
