[Obsolete as of TDM 2.06] TUTORIAL: How to setup EAX for TDM on any soundcard

Wow! Thanks for sharing. The reverb is nice, but I find the most critical improvement to be the positional audio.

In the videos, it is very audible how the stock TDM audio does not let you hear the direction of the sound source, whereas the improved experience let's me to pinpoint the sound source with my eyes closed.

How can we get this positional audio improvement to the Core?

Yeah the positional audio makes a huge difference. Wearing headhpones and playing the dark mod is a huge improvement now. That's why in the video when I am about to exit that gambling den sort of area I stopped and turned when that guard sitting down spoke. Because I actually heard it coming from that direction and it caught me by surprise.

In addition whenever you close a door behind you, you can hear it much better. It makes sneaking a hell of a lot more immersive.

In regards to your question I think when the Dhewm3 openAL code merge happens that's when we will get that (hopefully). It'd be nice to have basic reverb applied to the game and better positional audio, then if mappers wish to they could add their own tweaks to the how much reverb is applied.

Had this working earlier this evening, and then tried getting the positional audio from the other thread working...now TDM won't allow me to turn on EAX in the menu. I enable it, restart TDM, and after restarting it's still set to 'off'. :( I didn't think the two would have any conflicts.

This should have positional audio already in it. Or at least that's what I have and all I did was setup TDM with EAX as my OP states.

What thread about positional audio are you talking about?

My understanding was that EAX was for Environmental effects only...such as reverb. HRTF was for positional audio effects, such as when you turn the audio will sound like it's coming from a different direction. http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/17689-improve-your-tdm-experience-by-playing-with-openal-soft-hrtf-better-3d-audio/?hl=positional

I definitely had reverb with the EAX fix, but I wasn't getting a good sense of positional audio like in the HRTF video. Perhaps I needed to install them in a different order. I'll have to see if I can undo the changes.

Yes about the order, I have HRTF installed (and assuming it persisted when upgrading from 2.03 to 2.04) and now applied the EAX fix over it and I have it working. At least, I think I have hrtf working, I may need to re-run that .bat file that was posted in the thread and check for sure.

Norton AV also saw the creative Alechemy REMOVER as a trojan gen. Had to add it to the list of exceptions.

"I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."...

Then I guess it was a local list for BitDefender that they updated. It seems because the file patches another it seems to throw up false flags to AV

For some reason doesn't work for me.

Did everything by the book and no dice. Going to settings gives the standard reply "Hardware not found".

Using the REMOVER triggers that:

---START PATCHING---

[OFFSET PATCH]
Loading File:
D:\Creative\ALchemy\ALchemy.exe
Filesize Check : OK
CRC32 Check : Failed
Nothing patched!
ERROR
[OFFSET PATCH]
Loading File:
D:\Creative\ALchemy\dsound.dll
Filesize Check : OK
CRC32 Check : Failed
Nothing patched!
ERROR
---PATCHING DONE---

I actually rebooted twice (once for installing Alchemy, second for the Remover patch after it was done (didn't check if it did anything the first time).
Going to retry again.

Perhaps try disabling your AV while installing? what sort of soundcard do you have as well? and what OS?

If that fails I would try uninstalling everything, rebooting, disabling your AV, installing everything (running each EXE as Administrator) and see how that goes.

Wait a minute, you mean that it won't work on a 64 bit system?

That's not why the 64 branch was discussed so much right?

I'm on Windows 10 64 bit Pro

My AV isn't intefering to be exact.

All went smoothly, it's just that I double checked the remover changelog (which obviously won't patch something that was patched before), wasted energy on being paranoid about it.

I tried reinstalling, did everything by the rules and the only solution is of course what you propose. But it's going to take a while.

What a bummer if it was all in vain, if 64 bit systems are crossed out though.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

The 64 bit thing has nothing to do with this fix. I believe what the person of that post was saying was that the OpenAL (the equivilant of EAX) is coming with the 64 bit version of Dark Mod.

I have a 64 bit system and this works fine, also are there still people playing games who even still use 32bit systems? :D those systems must be ancient by now.

It worked for me on 64 bit until I installed the positional audio mod from the other thread.

Also I was wondering why I had positional audio and recently I installed OpenAL on my system to play Thief:G/2 with it so perhaps thats where the positional audio part came from. Although I did not do anything to set it up but i've found I can hear the origin much better in game. I hadn't opened TDM with sound (I mute it to map) for a while so it didn't even cross my mind that that could have been it.

I just assumed the EAX fix did all of that.

Here's the DxDiag for all system specs: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B82Nuxua9A8DY1VNWDBYNi1kU1U/view?usp=sharing

I don't understand what could go wrong then because ALchemy had no issues at all seeing the game folder and applying it's settings (nominally). It should work...

Also, is anyone else's dsoundlog.txt empty?

Is it supposed to be like that? Worth 0 KB.

Off Topic - a bit

I posted earlier that when beta testing Volta and the Stone I had a lot of cracks like fireworks when EAX was enabled

I just tried it again and the problem seems to haver gone away

It may or may not be relevant was that with the beta version EAX had specifically been supported in the FM and it was possible that this support had been removed in the final version

Can safely say I tried everything to no avail.

I have a few question in regards to the purpose of: CTSUApp.exe and the game settings in ALchemy.exe that has values for Buffers; Duration; Max Voice Count and Disable Music. Does this all need to be untouched?

My dsoundlog.txt in the ALchemy folder is empty, while each time I run the game with all settings described in the steps in OP, a text file is created with an update as you mentioned in the game folder.

No settings need to be tweaked, whatever they are by default is what they should be. If you followed the instructions exactly then i'm not sure why it's not working sorry :/

You made sure to move the Dark Mod from the left list to the right hand side list right in ALchemy and then close it before running TDM?

Yes! A thousand times.

Will try now to delete everything from registry connected and retry again.

Update: Didn't help either. Installing in the default folder as well, installing and reinstalling brings the same result.

For me it works neither. I did the exact installation steps but everytime I check "use EAX" ingame and restart the game, it is set to off again. I first installed the HRTF mod from the thread linked above and then did the EAX setup.

While this and the HRTF Filter works for me, they both give me a constant looping "beep" sound on some locations. Any explanation as to what this is?

That's a speaker entity that has an incorrect or missing sound shader. It's used to debug for authors.

However some maps may have this as without EAX no sound plays and due to the uncommon use of EAX it's more than likely the author just not knowing the issue is there.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.
