  1. Is there something wrong with the forums lately, or is it my browser? I've been having trouble formatting posts, and just now I couldn't format anything at all.

    I'm using Vivaldi.

Usually I have to: select text, click bold, nothing happens, select again, click bold, then it works.

Same for other stuff, like creating spoilers, bullet points, links. Nothing works the first time.

I have no problem. I use Firefox. @Zerg Rush also uses Vivaldi. Have you tried without extensions, or in another browser?

(btw. bold, italic and underline have shortcut keys: Ctrl B, Ctrl I and Ctrl U, you could try that)

  2. Just found out piped.kavin.rocks has a build-in audio-only for video's (great for music video's). Never thought something like this (including browser extensions) excisted. This would have saved me a lot of money on vacation, where I was camping without wifi.

Is piped.kavin.rocks broken? I think I've used it once before but now it seems to do nothing, even after I disabled all my blockers.

Seems to work fine for me..

I had another moment to look. Still seems broke AF, as described here:

      https://www.reddit.com/r/NewPipe/comments/xe50uk/pipedkavinrocks_doesnt_work/

I checked out this list of Invidious instances and yewtu.be:

      https://docs.invidious.io/instances/

      https://yewtu.be/feed/popular

The homepage appears to work but my search for the word "test" caused a bug page. Then it worked a few minutes later as I was writing this.

Basically, I think these YouTube frontends tend to break often. It's good that they exist though.

  3. Since Aluminum directed me here ( https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/9082-newbie-darkradiant-questions/page/437/#comment-475263 ) can we have unlimited renderer effects? Well, maybe not unlimited, by maybe 3-5? Thanks.

Since I wasn't the one mainly asking, I'll just cite you in the original thread instead.

There already is a kind of sorting, sort nearest, sort decal, sort <n>. For things like windows and such, sort nearest should probably have the desirable affect, though looking through multiple translucent shaders might kill performance.

    4. Nort

      Nort

Is having multiple render effects really killing performance that badly? I don't understand. You're saying that if I have two transparent objects side-by-side, then they'll just count as two render effects, but when combined, they somehow become something much more difficult to render?

Never-the-less, unless we're talking some kind of infinite portal problem, why not let the mapper choose how much he wants to kill performance? Just warn him against putting too many effects close together.

  4. Woo!! 2.10 Beta "Release Candidate" ( 210-07 ) is out:

It wont be long now :) ...

  5. I don't think there's a link to thedarkmod.com on forums.thedarkmod.com ...

      datiswous

Yeah and the wiki and moddb. It should have those links in the footer I think. Probably easy to add by an admin.

Edit: And a link to the bugtracker. I'm always searching for a post in the forum that links to that because I can't remember the url.

Reluctance to improve the forums is matched by reluctance to allow more people to work on it. Talk about trust and power.

  6. For some reason, the game has no audio for me System Info: OS: EndeavourOS (Arch-based Linux) Desktop Environment: KDE CPU: Ryzen 3700X GPU: RTX 2080 Ti GPU Driver: (Proprietary) 460.39 (Plugged into TV w/ HDMI and headset plugged in)
  7. I just installed tdm, and I clicked on the exe, when it loaded, the screen is all black, and what I assume is the main menu music is playing, with no video or graphics in the slightest. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
  8. I have a Sound BlasterX AE-5, in Windows 7 I can go up to 24bit 192 Khz (pointless, I know). In 2.07 I could set it there in windows, and everything sounded fine. In latest SVN version (64bit and 32bit), the sound is distorted and there's feedback that continuously builds up. I tried all settings including 24bit 44.1Khz, but that has the same issue. The only combo that works is 16bit 44.1Khz.
  9. I was surprised to find nothing about HRTF on this site so I decided to make a thread about what it is, how it improves your TDM experience and how you can get it. For Germans: Quasi den gleichen Thread gibt es auf Deutsch hier: http://www.hardwareluxx.de/community/f267/guide-openal-soft-mit-hrtf-als-ersatz-fuer-openal-vorteil-3d-sound-fuer-headphones-1013497.html What is HRTF? To put it simply: Our brain can determine the position of sounds so accurately because depending on where the sound comes from it goes through different zones of our head where the sound is unnoticeably changed but it's enough for the brain to put it into 3d space. HRTF is a technique to improve positional audio in games by filtering the audio signal the same way it would be changed when passing through our heads. This way the positioning is spot-on and feels very real. I have some demo videos on Youtube if you are in doubt it works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVqFbu4gsqs&index=8&list=PL_0EBFw_May-IAaplRFVS5n2-9p3pPR_4 Please note that HRTF suffers greatly under audio compression and is much better in real life! What do I need for HRTF? In this topic I will only talk about OpenAL Soft HRTF because this is the only way at the moment to get HRTF from TDM. You need: - Headphones! (in theory HRTF would work with speakers as well but there are no datasets for speakers) - OpenAL Soft version >= 1.14 (the way how HRTF can be used changed between versions, I will only talk about the latest version, 1.17.1 here) That's it! No specific sound card required or anything. It is however very easy to mess up the setup so that HRTF doesn't work. Follow the guide closely to make sure it works. How do I set it up? Windows 32 Bit: - Download current build of OpenAL Soft - move soft_oal.dll from bin\Win32 as "OpenAL32.dll" to C:\Windows\system32 Windows 64 Bit: - warning: Due to the architecture of Windows the 32/64 bit numbers are confusing. My tutorial is correct, don't be confused! - Download current build of OpenAL Soft - move soft_oal.dll from bin\Win32 as "OpenAL32.dll" to C:\Windows\SysWOW64 (for 32 bit games) - move soft_oal.dll from bin\Win64 as "OpenAL32.dll" to C:\Windows\system32 (for 64 bit games) Final steps for both Windows versions: - move standard HRTF datasets (default*.mhr) from hrtf to %appdata%\openal\hrtf - remove OpenAL32.dll/wrap_oal.dll from the game folder if existing - Copy all text from alsoftrc.sample, create alsoft.ini in %appdata%, paste the text from alsoftrc.sample into alsoft.ini and change "#hrtf = auto" to "hrtf = true" (remove "#"!) - make sure your audio sample rate is 44,1kHz or 48kHz - turn on OpenAL in Darkmod.cfg (seta s_useOpenAL "1") - set TDM to stereo sound - To make sure it works run put this in a .bat file and run it from the TDM folder: Check openallog.txt if HRTF is enabled. Linux: - Make sure your OpenAL Soft version is >= 1.14 - Depending on the distribution and OpenAL Soft install you may need to install the HRTF datasets manually: - Download current build of OpenAL Soft and move default*.mhr from hrtf to ~/.local/share/openal/hrtf - Download alsoftrc.sample and save to ~/.alsoftrc - In ~/.alsoftrc change "#hrtf = auto" to "hrtf = true" (remove "#"!) - set TDM to stereo sound Advanced users: There is a way to improve the positioning even more: Because the default HRTF datasets are made for an "average" head they may not be optimal for you. You can create your own by following this guide: https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/1fzonq/psa_for_games_using_openal_including_minecraft/cagd3lb PS: This also works with Thief 1&2 running on NewDark but you have to enforce a frequency of 44,100 kHz in alsoft.ini for it to work because Thief's sounds are in 22,050 khz. PPS: In order to spread the awareness of HRTF I license this forum post under CC-BY so you can repost it anywhere when giving credit to me.
  10. Not so long ago I found what could make a pretty good profile picture and decided to try it out on these new forums. But I couldn't find a button anywhere that would let me change it. I asked on Discord and it seems Spooks also couldn't find anything anywhere. So I logged into an old alternative account and, lo and behold, that account has a button. This is on the first screen I get when I: 1) click on my account name in the top-right of the browser -> 2) click on 'profile'. Compared to my actual account: Are you also missing this button on your account? It'd be very much appreciated if that functionality could be restored to any of the affected accounts.
  11. I've created a patch to fix the problem where audio would sometimes start popping/crackling when the game starts. And in the cosole this would be seen repeated: snd_pcm_writei 4096 frames failed: Broken pipe preparing audio device for outputI have a feeling that this fix is more of a kludge that works around the issue, rather than fixes it at the source. However, it does appear to work well enough to mask the problem. Changes: -If a call to snd_pcm_writei() returns an EPIPE error it will re-prepare the connection and then try to send the audio data again, but it will also try to send a partial duplicate. The number of frames duplicated is set by 's_alsa_underrun_extrafill'. I've only tested it on Linux Mint 17.2, 64 bit. tdm-linux-sound-fix.txt
  12. Hi, I need to know what the code is to use Spoiler Tags. I am using my tablet and I don't have the options to use anything, like spoiler tags, quote tags, text changes etc. Thanks
  13. Not totally sure about this. I've heard about a delay/ hiccup when certain sounds play? Someone reported a noticeable lag in one of my missions right where a conversation starts. I haven't been able to reliable reproduce this, but I seem to remember this happen to me a couple time before. Is it possible that the audio files for conversations are being loaded on the spot instead of on map load? Once again, just speculation.
  14. Still spreading the word about TDM on forums to new peops... Funny to see people say "Awesome, I loved playing Thief back in the day!"

Yes it was in a discussion where someone was saying how unhappy they are with the way game companies grant themselves permission to do whatever they like to your PC and personal info today. I pointed out that giving up games completely is an unnecessarily overkill solution when there are free games like TDM to play.

  15. Hi guys, through the "cheats" topic I got the idea, that it would be quite useful, if there were tags for missions (the post was about removing the killing restriction in some missions to suit the prefered play style). I don't know how easy or difficult this is, but with them, it would be quite convenient to pick missions with playstyles, environment, etc one does want to use. This could also be expanded to other mission properties. I remember a discussion about climbable drains, handles on doors, that cannot be picked and other things the map author chooses for himself. That way these things would be clearer and as I said before, it is easier to choose missions with playstyles that suit oneself. What do think?
  16. Im thinking sorta like SageThumbs, but for audio files. I found AudioShell but it dosent list salient details like channels, bit rate, tag data inside windows explorer.

  19. Helloes. My plan is to, with the help of you guys, compile a list over what needs doing on the audio side and then try to get these things done. I've been working with audio as a hobbyist for many years, I play a few instruments sufficiently well to be able to compose things and I have some in-depth knowledge in production techniques, audio synthesis, live recording, music theory and acoustics. With that said, I'm far from a master; I learn and read up on new things all the time to broaden my knowledge even further. I primarily work in Propellerheads Reason for music production and audio creation. So far I've seen a few topics here being discussed. Ice footstep sounds. (Might be possible to modify the stone sounds to achieve this, otherwise I'll have to get out with one of my harddisc recorders and figure something out). City ambient sounds. Carts rolling, animals howling, muffled talk, distant oneshots; anything to try to make the cityscapes come alive. Strained metal sounds. (Should be quite easy with a ring modulator and some basic waveforms in pretty much any synth where you can sculpt sound from scratch). + Chest opening/closing sounds are inconsistent.+ New dropped candlestick holder sound, old one sounds tinny.+ Lockpicking sounds.+ Inconsistent jumping/landing sounds. Also being mentioned in another thread is the lack of ambient music, and general indoors ambient. What I'm thinking here is basically composing and production work, possibly based on what is already in the mod (the indoor piano loops, etc) to fit well together with what is already available. Focus will be spent on adequate lengths and bearable repetitiveness, along with different levels of tension for the pieces. Areas that I have thought of so far, including things being mentioned in other threads, are the following: Manor/general indoors non-creepy environments.Harbor.Warehouse.Factory.Wilderness.Mountains. Suggestions by Obsttorte in http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/16931-composer-for-the-dark-mod/ .+ More themes for the builders.+ Themes for the pagans.+ As we have Moors now, it would be nice to have ambient music for them, although Springheel or so would have to point out their background so you get an idea what they are about (didn't follow the related discussions too closely).+ Something for our inventors. Steampunk like, but not too futuristic.+ Anything else we come up with. I've also been thinking of creating a sample pack of sort, with a variety of "building blocks" for people to create their own ambient tracks for maps. Others in this subforum have already showed very promising results using freeware and basic editing techniques (Paulstretch, Audacity, etc), but it might be tricky to track down CC-licensed source material to use. In combination with being a collected thread where you can follow the progress on these things, I will also act as a mentor and self-proclaimed guru, trying to answer questions others might have regarding audio work. If someone needs help with editing/mixing of any sort, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to contribute. In case there are more people interested in helping out with specific tasks, or have knowledge in areas where I myself might lack, join in and help out! General suggestions on things that might need updating can be discussed here and we'll see what we can do.
