Announcing the release of the first William Steele mission!

Attached File  Steele.jpg   293.79K   55 downloads

Summary

In the North is a mansion heist that takes place outside the town of Braedon, north of Bridgeport. William Steele is an adventurer from Bridgeport who has been away several years, working as a soldier/guard for one Lord Bascombe at his castle in Braedon. Lord Harckoff, a nasty fellow who lives in a renovated Builder church nearby, sees Bascombe as a threat to his shady business, and has put a price on Bascombe's head. Steele decides to visit Harckoff one night to see what he can do to prevent Bascombe's death.

The William Steele Missions

In the North is the first of several Steele missions. Altogether they'll tell a story of corruption, greed, and revenge. At some point, I'll start packaging them as a campaign, in addition to the single missions.

Download

This Mission can be obtained using the in-game loader. Look for WS1: In the North.

Mission Details and Download: http://www.thedarkmo...ndetails/?id=65

Alternate: In the North (Create a folder named "darkmod/fms/ws1_north" and unzip the two files into that folder. WS1: In the North will then appear on TDM's "New Mission" page.)

Build Time

About one year.

Thanks

Thanks to the TDM team for creating a terrific platform for storytelling and stealth gaming.

Thanks to Bikerdude, Springheel, and AluminumHaste for beta testing, especially at a time when we were all busy dealing with the final phase of TDM 1.08.

The Translators (Smallman, Overmann, and Sengu) are hard at work on translations for various languages, so thanks go out to them as well. Localized versions will be available after they're completed and tested.

And thanks to YOU for playing!

Known Issues

This is a large non-linear mission. To ease the burden on slower systems, consider shutting doors behind you as you go.

If you experience low frame rates, please consult the Performance Tweaks page on the Wiki.

Performance Tweaks

For very low end PCs I recommend the following settings:
  • V-sync is off
  • AA is off
  • Aniso is 4x or lower
  • Advanced settings are simple/default
  • Post processing is disabled
Anyone having performance issues with TDM missions can put the following cvars into their Darkmod.cfg file. This will improve the framerate and stutter/chop when in-game, but may increase loading times a little.

image_usePrecompressedTextures "1"
image_useNormalCompression "2"
image_useAllFormats "1"
image_useCompression "1"
image_preload "1"

Important

This mission requires TDM 1.08 or later.

Repeat after me: "Read and explore, Read and explore".

Most Importantly, Enjoy!

On a personal note I have to say this is a stunning piece of art by Gman, this is by way and a far the best mission for the darkmod I have ever had the distinct pleasure of playing. I won't be surprised if this becomes most people's favourite TDM mission of all time. The bar has been raised again!

@Gman, I have posted this over on TTlg for you.

I am not even attempting this on my laptop. On wednesday when I get home, though...
Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

Most of the map should be playable, but yes if you want the premium experience then yes, wait till you get home.

I look forward to playing this tonight when I get home. FYI though the screenies at the top weren't shown to me until I logged in. Not sure if that is intentional though.
"What prompted you to release the source code to your engine?"
Ken S: "I did it to please the fans. Also, I wanted to see a native Windows port without having to do the work myself."

Pretty sure that's normal forum behaviour, most forums won't let you see hosted images or download hosted files unless you have an account.

Here's part of the text I sent grayman after I finished playing the beta-test version of this map:

Quote

I have to say that the entire reason I started working on the mod was a selfish desire to play missions like this one. It was incredibly rich and satisfying on several levels. It has the visual beauty of the best of Biker's missions along with gameplay that rivals Sotha's, and a level of immersion and "reality" that I haven't yet seen in any other mission. The moments of discovery, of truly feeling like you're somewhere you're not supposed to be, and of piecing together the lives of the characters around you, are all exceptional.

This mission is going to blow people's socks off, and the idea that it's the beginning of an extended story makes it all the more exciting.

Couldn't agree more. Just to give you some idea of what we're talking about during beta testing I played this mission through 8 times now. And when I get home I'm going to play it again.

See one vote of average on the poll, I can only guess the person is a non-native English speaking person to have voted as such...

Yes I two never play a mission all the way through more than 1-2 times, even beta testing. But I'm going round a friends house during the week to play this on his 42" 1080p TV :D

Dont me, I myself only have am old skewl 36" CRT that can manage 800* 600 natively. I have an old HD4870 in the media pc, but I imagine down scaling from 1080p to 600p would look a bit naff.
