Bachelor Mapping Challenge!
The girlfriend will be away to her mum's place for almost a week, which means more mapping time for me! I'm planning a speed build. Hope it will go my way
I'm starting by downloading 2.11. Don't know if I'm going to use any fancy new stuff. Just want to crack those itching map muscles that has gone dry and dead since almost a year's worth of no-mapping

Love your work so looking forward to whatever you got coming next whenever and wherever that may be!

An idea flow into my head. Would it be possible/fun/somewhat realistic to be able to shoot a moss arrow onto an electrical light to create a lamp shade and thus cover the light?
- Show previous comments 1 more
-
Isn't that what water arrows are for? ^^
-
At first I thought this is a good idea but Siyah is right. Its not very realistic if AI does not see it and if they Alert... where is the use. Maybe if it is only temprary or a way to remove it after passing thru or something...
-
Not that unrealistic that the guards interprets the sudden darkness as a power failure. The lamp doesn't need to be completely off eigther, just muffled. After a few seconds the moss catches fire and disappears. Just a weird thought
-
Are there any risks to merge vertexes on patches in one? Like, taking the corners of a square patch and make a triangle?
-
Patches don't seal so even if you create a leak somehow, it would've leaked anyway. The only issue is shadows. If the patch casts shadows the leak would make shadow silhouette calculations more complex.
-
The only downside, minor, I've seen is that the polygon normals get a little glitchy (darkened) towards the fusion point. In terms of texturing, you'd need to paste from a brush to avoid massive distortion.

Congratulations for your FM, FM!

Congrats- yay for us!

Congrats! Look forward to playing it tonight!

Been away for some time again and thought some mapping would be nice; Question from a modelling noob: Is it possible/an easy/quick task to select a bunch of models/func_statics in DR, export them to an external modelling software like Blender and then save it as one model and put it back to DR? This of course to save entities.
- Show previous comments 2 more
-
You can export brush and patchwork using the DR ASE exporter. But you can't combine worldspawn and models.
-
Okay, but is it an easy task to (in Blender) to import the same model, say several bottles and then arrange them to look like a bunch of bottles, on the same z-plane and then save it as a unique model? Instead of using up several entities in DR...
-
Yeah, you can totally do that with Blender easily. Though it can be slightly problematic to get smoothing right on a prop with a lot of hard edges. I've found you really just have to split edges manually for it to translate over correctly. Which can be kinda a pain if you don't use Blender often.

Betatesting will start tomorrow at 12:30 (as the latest) swedish time...

It's a mixed feeling as always Tyler, it's Not An Ordinary Guest. The more the merrier The time here is now 10:15...
-
I would love to beta test it if you would like. I have never done it before but I guess I just look out for things wrong/right and comment on it?

Clusters of paths...
- Show previous comments 1 more
-
There are clusters of path_nodes in my current mission...Over 50 placed AI...
-
Things will get funny if you encounter any problems
-
I've planned quite well in advance and have charts on where they shall be placed
-
Didn't know that lights could be in the void without causing a leak...
-
Dumped...
-
When I first saw that, software popped into my head... as in "core dumped" (aka program crashed) Then I realized... Welcome to the single world, my friend.
-
Sorry to hear that... TDM widow?
-
Ouch. But look at the bright side. This is most likely the most optimal time of year to be dumped. Lots of activities, lots of new more interesting people to meet... You'll be fine.

Feeling encouraged to start mapping again

For the record, I get voice actors from people doing vlogs on YouTube, so I know what I'm getting & they're already predisposed to participate.
-
Would be cool if you could get this girl back and finish the job
-
Excellent! I'll await all your contributions with overflowing enthusiasm! Heja Sverige!
-
Graphics card crashed so I bought a new one...GeForce GTX 980 TI 6gb...Have tried to make TDM to lag by packing lights...it won't lag
- Show previous comments 1 more
-
Have you tried enabling transparency AA and playing a mission with lots of foliage?
-
I have the same card as you and if you want the best performance (as I also get a little lag in certain TDM missions for some reason) I enable AA in the nvidia control panel and just have the game without AA.
It runs really well and you still get the AA
-
I haven't tried any real maps. Just stacked some thirty lights and fire particles in one room. Have ramped up as much res my monitor can handle and full antialiasing and technical mumbo jumbo and not a single framdrop below 55-60. But further testing will occur

Hit a moose...
- Show previous comments 1 more
-
Are you OK?
-
Yes, Lumpy's a bit grumpy now. I'm OK, it was a side hit, hampered the lamp shielding and side mirror. Don't know about moose though. Local hunter on the prowl.
-
Oh deer!
-
How often do YOU DMAP?
- Show previous comments 13 more

After every meal.
-
I thought FS were part of collision model, not pathfinding? Did you convert it, Obs?
-
Yep. The cm is also crated during dmapping.
-
I didn't know one could fix the problem with "leaking" arches when you thicken a curved patch...Then I read about "non fixed" subdivisions in the patch inspector...That saves a lot of headache
-
I want to map! After my theatrical performance in a couple of weeks, I demand more of this in my life!
- Show previous comments 4 more

good luck on that!
-
You'll be fine. Just make sure no one mentions the Scottish play. What's it called? Oh yeah! Macbeth.
-
And remember no matter what happens if some director/producer asks you to get in their car, keep your buttcheeks closed!!!

I'm not dead...!

as I said, Tels ;p Gonna have a Crash Bang Crash!

@Bohr: It has been mapping on and on, just a neglect of the forums.
@Diego: I've felt like I've abandoned the community.
-
If it was for mapping we forgive your absence!

It's so difficult and frustrating to create nice looking city sections!!!
- Show previous comments 16 more
-
Open up good city sections in DR and study them.
They're often angled skybox walls (making the area squashed polygonal) with portaled kiss points out, a surrounding layer of tall buildings, and on an angled z-axis ground. Those features alone will get it started off looking natural and lead to interesting architecture.
-
I don't understand this: "making the area squashed polygonal"
And "angled z-axis ground" Do you mean different heights of the ground?
-
Sorry. For "squashed polygon", I mean if you're looking down at the street in DR, there are like 6-10 skybox "walls" of different lengths so it looks squashed into an oval. It instantly gets away from 4-wall boxy. And by the ground, yes I mean different heights, but mostly I mean the ground is sloped with patches & stairs. That's what I learned from looking at great city missions.
-
Just heard for the first time: "Now they want to raise taxes again? They're gonna drive all the honets men out of work." Exactly in time for the government shift in Sweden to the socialists...
-
From what I read they don't have a 50% majority and are unwilling to partner with the far-right party. Your gold pieces are safe.
-
Yes, the political standings are quite unstable as is...
-
Yep, we finns are looking at our Swedish f®iends very closely. What happens in Sweden often happens later in Finland, so please make sure you do some really good decisions over there, you hear!
-
-
Just learned that one can adjust the detailness of patches in the patch inspector...Will probably save some tris in patch heavy areas...

Mapping while listening to Sothas soothing voice with his lovely finnish accent, explaining how awesome modular building techniques are
- Show previous comments 5 more
-
Please do! TDM accent-o-galore, for great justice!
Serves them native english speakers right...
-
Not gonna happen with mapping, but I might stream some TDM missions and use a phat swedish accent, littered with finnish curse words though!
-
I look forward to it! For that purpose, I should make you a special mission full of unfair insta-kill traps, teleporting flaming (area damage effect) revenants, deadly jumping puzzles and a save functions disabled. "Pärkkele, finne!"
-
Nearly died for a moment. Uninstalled Steam to change the language of the interface. In hindsight I can see now that you may change it in the steam settings menu! Uninstallment process removed the steam folder along with Doom and my maps!!! Lucky me there is a fresh backup that's identical to my current work...!!!

holy moly
wonder what happens if one installed it under C:\Windows
:-0
-
bst, stupidity would get penalized ;-). More seriously: if the uninstaller gave a big warning, it wouldn't be that big a problem, I thinks. It is horrible if there is no warning and stuff gets deleted!
-
There was no warning...interrestingly most games warn you about you're about to delete save games
