  1. With as little fanfare as possible, I'd like to announce the release of the third installment of The Lieutenant series: Foreign Affairs. Huge thanks for my beta testers: @Bergante @Cambridge Spy @chakkman @Mat99 @Shadow @wesp5 For a full list of credits, please see the readme.txt that ships with the mission, or go here. More screenshots can be viewed here: https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjBr44M Download link #1: https://github.com/FrostSalamander/lt3/releases/download/1.0/faffairs.pk4 Download link #2: https://drive.proton.me/urls/JESNV8CNKW#ljttGnbkkAOh @nbohr1more here's the 800x600 versions of the screenshots: https://drive.proton.me/urls/MFGZ3WXCAW#WXXAnYkPgGZX Stuff to be aware of: TDM 2.12 required The only difference in difficulty settings is the (optional) loot goal If you see a tile material, chances are it's a custom version changed to sound like stone. I did this in order to preserve the aesthetic of the setting without making it maddening to play. Some vines are climbable, some aren't. Just try them and see. The FM makes use of latches on doors, a new feature created by @Wellingtoncrab and myself. Read more here: https://github.com/thedarkmodcommunity/test-latch/wiki Known Issues Some people are having an issue with things being unfrobable, particularly the jewelry cabinets in Jerry's Jewels and also another lever in a secret place. Try exiting/re-entering the area to see if that fixes anything, as the frobability is triggered by entering and leaving the room/area/. Secrets Here's a list of the secret locations. Obvious spoilers:
  2. Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

      The Black Arrow

Damn, 7 Sisters, wasn't that one made by the late Lady Rowena? I have to play it, I remember playing it right after she died and I didn't even notice, those news disturbed me enough not to play 7 Sisters for the time being.

Very sad that she died, she made one of the very best FMs out there. My very first FM was one of hers even, Lady Rowena's Curse.

Yeah I still remember her too and the Seven Sisters FM...

Now I remember what the other FM was. I wanted to have part of mine set in a hospital, and T2X, which came out right afterwards too, had a level set in a hospital. After that experience I thought for most ideas you have, someone is going to have thought along similar lines. But the thing is people can have their own takes with the same idea too. So I think it's okay to have the same idea played out, if you give it your own spin.

  3. Having trouble sleeping? Is the moon too bright? The music too loud ? This FM is for you. Kingsal presents: Moongate Ruckus Finally, a fan mission about some taffin' peace and quiet. DOWNLOAD HERE (v2) ------------------------------------------------------- Testers: - Welly, Goldy, and Amady Vocals: The very talented Goldwell as grumpy Corbin. ------------------------------------------------------- This map, gatehouse_final.map, was based on the very first mission I ever put together back in 2014. It was originally suppose to be part of Volta 1, but didn't make the cut. Here it is now, refurbished, re-worked, graphics set to HIGH, and.... Wait... What is that... It's the music again... ohhh the music!
  4. Who I am is of little importance, what matters is the job I am offering. Though the item in question may be simple, I can assure you that the reward is anything but. The task, to those brave enough to follow through, is this: During the peak of Braeden's Harvest Festival, break into Lord Alister Squashbottom's manor and steal that which is most valuable to him: his prize-winning pumpkin. This is the very pumpkin he intends on submitting to the judges of this year's competition, and you are to ensure he has no choice but to resign in failure. It may be dangerous, to which you will be amply compensated, but I have little doubt you will be able to weather all obstacles and keep your eye on the prize to complete this task. For those brave enough to accept the job, start here. Cordially, E. Siltstone Gameplay Notes TDM version 2.12 is required to play this mission. Mines are pickable; simply approach them with lockpicks equipped to frob-disarm. A moss arrow can be shot at glass to make it break more quietly. I recommend playing all three difficulties, as they are very different. This FM may be more hardware intensive than normal. LOD settings can be set below "Normal" to improve performance on low-end machines. Download Version 1.0 - This FM is available here via Google Drive, and will soon be made available via the in-game mission downloader. 6. On wikipage https://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Tdm_mapsequence.txt it states: and in the example code: It seems it's possible to define something like this: Mission 1: tunnel street prison Mission 2: lake warehouse1 Mission 3: warehouse2 ending where tunnel, street and prison are different map files and part of the first mission in a campaign of 3 missions. So since it's not fully supported, I wonder what is actually supported by tdm.
  7. "...to a robber whose soul is in his profession, there is a lure about a very old and feeble man who pays for his few necessities with Spanish gold." Good day, TDM community! I'm proud to release my first FM: "The Terrible Old Man", an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's short story of the same name. This is a short, 30-45 minute mission in which you are the getaway driver in a team of three small-time thieves. You and your associates were fortunate enough to overhear rumors of a famously wealthy and frail old man, but things change when your cohorts do not return from what is supposed to be their easiest and most lucrative job. Now it's up to you to brave the old man's house and find your associates. 8. Here's my first FM. A small and easy mission, inspired by Thief's Den and The Bakery Job, where you must find and steal a cook's recipe book in order to save a friend from going out of business. Download: Mediafire (sk_cooks.pk4) TDM Website's Mission Page The in-game mission downloader Thanks to: The people who helped me get this far, both in the forums and on Discord. The beta testers: MirceaKitsune, Mat99, Baal, wesp5, Cambridge Spy, jaxa, grodenglaive, Acolytesix ( Per the author in the beta testing thread. ) Skaruts has given permission to the TDM Team to add Subtitles or Localization Strings to this mission. (No EFX Reverb.) If anyone from the Community or TDM team wishes to create these we will gladly test them and update the mission database.
  9. I was playing Skyrim, got bored fast. Got back to The Dark Mod just for one mission, played "Somewhere above the City" which is not really a great mission but still good, as in above-average.

My biggest regret is living in this country, where there's a heat wave, I am sweating at 20c and I really wish for temperatures below 5c.

People tend to be LOUD when they're unhappy. When they're happy you don't see anything except for the sales numbers.

Interestingly, the Bethesda games sell well, and still earn a lot of shit storm.

But then, that isn't exactly rare these days either, with all the envy.

I also have a lot to criticize with them, but, I wouldn't smash them for it. They're just AAA games for nowadays audience. That audience likes repetitive and boring graphics demos.

Isn't just number of sails? I mean if 10 milion peeps buy the game and 1000 people complain, this looks like a lot, but not in comparison.

If 30 people on the forum don't agree something will not get implemented.

  10. Is there something wrong with the forums lately, or is it my browser? I've been having trouble formatting posts, and just now I couldn't format anything at all.

    I'm using Vivaldi.

Usually I have to: select text, click bold, nothing happens, select again, click bold, then it works.

Same for other stuff, like creating spoilers, bullet points, links. Nothing works the first time.

    1. datiswous

      datiswous

I have no problem. I use Firefox. @Zerg Rush also uses Vivaldi. Have you tried without extensions, or in another browser?

(btw. bold, italic and underline have shortcut keys: Ctrl B, Ctrl I and Ctrl U, you could try that)

  11. So I thought this is normal TDM behaviour. But then I found it's not happening on Windows. Also, when I alt-tab to desktop, the mouse is still gone, keyboard navigation is possible. Why is this happening on mission load? What is the purpose?
  12. Hi everyone, I hope this is the correct section (in the Fan Missions section there are mostly topics by mission authors on their new missions). I started playing TDM a few years ago, I completed and replayed a lot missions, but I still have to play a good amount of content, and I would like to find the names of two specific missions... Can someone tell me the name of the mission portrayed in this screenshot and the name of the mission portrayed in the background image of the main page of the TDM website? Thank you in advance.
  13. I just finished The Black Parade (it was really nice), and, now I kind of tasted blood. You guys know some top notch fan missions for either game, which I should play? They should be of similar quality as the missions in The Black Parade. I frankly have no idea about the mission makers in Thief and Thief 2, so, I have to ask. I know that Melan did some missions for TG and TMA, but, frankly, I liked his TDM missions better. With the other mission authors, I have no idea.
  14. My new mission, A Night in Altham, is available. We are already up to version 2! @Dave the Tafferfound an problem that deserves a fix, so here is version 2: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/y4r1dmziuq6clh2im3qz1/altham2.pk4?rlkey=m3cv5v6v70lxbc9xha61nuxoj&dl=1. I will ask @nbohr1more to update the databases. Thanks to JackFarmer (alpha testing and custom ambient music) and the many beta testers (jaxa, Shadow, wesp5, Cambridge Spy, thebigh, datiswous, Mezla, MirceaKitsune, Melchior, Acolytesix, TheUnbeholden, prjames, Bergante). Thanks to @peter_spy for his beautiful Builder Compound assets. This is a large mission, so be ready to take some time. I recommend that you do named saves occasionally (I actually implemented auto-saves for this mission, but it was causing crashes on Linux, so I removed it). This mission has a lot of keys, so it implements a key management mechanism. Keys are removed from the game when no longer needed. This includes when you use a key to open a door, or if you pick a door/lock that also uses a key. Most keys are automatically removed, but there are a couple that aren't (for example, if they open up more than one door). In a certain area, this mission uses the Keyhole Peek feature of TDM. Typically, this is when you lean forward (F key) into a door keyhole and you can see into the next room. But in this case you don't lean into a keyhole. It's a hole of another kind. It's an unconventional use of something that isn't used a lot in TDM; hopefully the mission context will make it clear when to use it. The mission does not use Keyhole Peek for regular doors. Be aware, there is a known problem on Linux, where the peek feature can cause a crash. Peeking is not required for mission completion. This has been tested on TDM 2.11a and the current dev build of 2.12 (dev16854-10518). Scary things warning: Difficulty settings make a difference. Things that are affected by the difficulty level: Enjoy!
  15. I'm happy to present my first FM, The Spider and the Finch. There may be a spider, but no ghosts or undead. It should run a couple hours. It's now available on the Missions page or the in-game downloader. Many thanks to the beta testers Acolytesix, Cambridge Spy, datiswous, madtaffer, Shadow, and wesp5 for helping me improve and making the mission to the best of my abilities. This would not be have been possible without Fidcal's excellent DarkRadiant tutorial. Thanks also to the many people who answered my questions in the TDM forums. Cheers! 2023-12-13 Mission updated to version 3. Fixed a bug where the optional loot option objective was not actually optional. Updated the animations for Astrid Added a hallway door so the guards are less likely to be aggroed en masse.
  16. Does this look like sorted? Does a true A-Z sorting look that bad? Technical: to get these examples I just commented out most of the stuff in MoveArticlesToBack() in file \framework\I18N.cpp
  17. "The Threepenny Revue" https://www.thedarkmod.com/missiondetails/?internalName=threepenny "I've been in the business of other peoples' valuables for as long as I can remember, so I'm no stranger to breaking and entering. But until today, I've never done a robbery on commission. I guess there's a first time for everything..." Randal Cartier, a local theater owner, thinks himself above paying protection money to the local gangs. You've been hired to prove him wrong. "The Threepenny Revue" is a first attempt at a Dark Mod Fan Mission. After playing TDM for ages and loving it, I wanted to try my hand at creating one of my own. As such, this is a short, simple, and relatively straightforward mission made to learn the ropes. The experience was very enjoyable, and I'm planning to work on another one in the future. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this one. It's available now in the mission list, but in the event anybody wants or needs a backup source I'm hosting the files on my own site here. Special thanks to @Cambridge Spy, @thebigh, @Shadow, @wesp5, and @boissiere for Beta Testing and giving feedback, which helped enormously in ironing out problems in DarkRadiant
  18. Sixty years ago the famous deLisle family fell into ruin. The last heir of their house believes an ancient heirloom will restore their fortunes. Retrieving it should be worth braving a haunted house for... Get it from the in-game mission downloader.

  20. A Bridge Too Far (version 1.0, 2023-09-22) In this small scale mission, you seek to steal the original copy of a book from the boss of a counterfeit crime outfit, which are located on a bridge. 21. Not too sure where to report this, but found another mission which soft locks if "Open Doors on Unlock" is not set, namely "VFAT1: The Angel's Tear". To be precise: So a bug in this particular mission. I am running dev16818-10434, but I suspect this isn't relevant in this case ... the mission isn't worth replaying in another version to check, to be honest. I was lucky to have a save file from before opening the panel!
  22. Why do we see people selling fan art and models from games online? How and why do they not get ripped a new one by publishers? I mean there are some companies who just sit on franchises and do nothing with them; they tend to be the most litigious, while more active ones who have actually made good games in the last 15 years seem to ignore it? I guess sitting around, hoarding franchises and not developing games all day means you have more time to go after fans. :) But still, I do feel that profiting off of someone else's work without their permission is wrong.

    1. jaxa

      jaxa

It's difficult/expensive to police, might not be competing with the actual product, and alienates fans who are giving free advertising to the works. It may be in a legal gray area if trademarks aren't used.

    2. jaxa

      jaxa

Using Nintendo as an example, they tend to go after emulators, unauthorized ports, and fan games. They aren't as likely to go after fan art. There was a recent DMCA request sent to SteamGridDB, but that was more like reworked box art, I assume used for emulator GUIs:

Well, there are even people who sell tshirt prints of the thief games for their own profit without legal pursue. I think doing fanart without profit is fine, but selling them for their own pocket to be printed on clothes and posters by using the fame of games other people / companies made is not right.

  23. I saw by chance that Mr. b1k3rdude uploaded a video of a TDM mission's briefing on his YT channel. I never heard of this mission, at least I can't remember. Will this mission be released at some point? It looks interesting.
  24. Not sure if this is a bug, or something that could be worked around in DR, but ongoing objectives don't get marked as completed at the end of missions. Here's a small video to illustrate this: https://i.imgur.com/qRkcmJ7.mp4 The "No kills" objective is the pre-made one from the mapstartpack_complete.pfb prefab. I didn't make any changes to it, apart from the displayed text. I attached my test map here, where I've been experimenting with these objectives, and it's easy to reproduce this behavior in it (as seen in the video). On a related note, TDM could display the complete list of objectives after the mission is completed (alongside the mission statistics). I think that would be a nice thing to have. loot_obj_test.map
  25. I was arguing with my friend and we had different takes on this. What about you? What makes mission fun to play?
