  1. Remember that installer works with old versions too. You install 2.11 and installer will overwrite your newer training mission with the one from 2.11. Switch back to 2.12 and training mission will be deleted. Also, there is no proper concept as "mission version". There are various things like version, some of them don't exist for core missions. It is easy to say "just check condition here, then condition here, then here". Such hacking will cause confusion, and the support for these conditions will have to stay with us forever, despite everyone forgetting about it in a few years.
  2. Mystical Merry's Metaphysical Mapping Co. Spooks You Again! Thief's Remorse Screenshots Title: Thief's Remorse Theme: Spoopy Release: 2015/10/30 Mapper: Airship Ballet Build Time: ~28 hours My God. I'm genuinely begging you. Next year, either don't challenge me to make a halloween map in a fortnight or sedate me, because, like last time, I'll leave it for my two free days and do the whole thing in one go. It's bad for me. You're killing me. Uh, anyway, here's a spooky halloween map. There's sneaking involved, but it's something more of a rollercoaster than a traditional sneaking map with ghosts. I really wanted to go out there with this mission, since getting a bit creative with Exhumed last year made me realise the potential for some more abstract, bizarre stuff that could be done pretty easily in TDM. It's full of scripted spooks, events, and even requires you to pay attention to what you're told! Depending on what you do, and how much of a monster you are, there's a whole four different ways for you to come out of your trip to Nowhere. It's pretty big, surprisingly so: I got more and more ambitious as I went along, just like I always do. As a result, well, I'm the only person who tested it. So, uh, I'll be around for bug fixing. I mean it's totally playable without issue from start to finish, but I haven't gone around trying to break it in order to release it before Hollaween. Above all, have fun! Download links remorse.pk4
  3. The devs didn't title this thread, and @datiswous said they're attempting to mislead people by using Russell's name and a retro style to make it resemble Thief, which is cynical. I grew up on forums like I'm sure anyone who likes a game from '98 did. I actually left the Discord immediately after joining it because it was more off-topic doom-posting than anything relevant to the mod. I thought the forums might be better, but it's mostly just grown men yelling at clouds and telling strangers how mature they are, and a few brave souls actually developing anything. Depressing place, I'll just stick to enjoying new missions every 6 months without an account.
  4. I feel that tweaking shaders visually does more harm than good in the end. Here is one example of what shader tweaking leads to, and where I'll do yet another visually-breaking change: 6354 Before that is was untweakable specular which also broke visuals: 5044 What a game engine needs is a universal model (preferably well-known) with several tweakable parameters. In fact, the very idea of PBR and why it wins today is that it models real physics, and thus it works more or less the same way in every engine and scenario. It is a well-known standard (with minor variations). We can't have PBR yet (and maybe forever), thus we stick close to Phong reflection model, which has been around for decades and is also quite standard. Artists should make assets that would result in a beautiful picture, not shaders. But they can't do it if we have some weird non-standard lighting model which changes every year. We should never tweak shaders based on how average missions becomes seemingly nicer to us! If someone decides to add normal mapping, it should behave as an approximation for how real high-resolution surface should behave in our model, not as some kind of "beautifier effect". If you want to add some effect which is outside the current model, it should be done in a way that: it does not change how the previous model works (and how current missions look) it can be tweaked by understandable parameters it is applied in all shaders and all lighting the same way I believe we already have fresnel and rim, but it is kinda hardcoded and not present in all shaders. Yet another result of someone tweaking shaders based on how it looks and not on how sound it is mathematically.
  5. Why can the official missions not be updated via the mission downloader? These are just fm's. This would give us players earlier fixes, instead of having to wait another year. This makes no sense to me.
  6. Hi fellow taffers, Way back, when I have a lot more time to play, I played a hundreds of hours of T1 and T2 fan missions. Being little bit nostalgic, I decided to install TDM and try some of its missions. However, having not enough time, I was wondering if anyone could suggest missions with a strong emphasis on story and preferably with a twist or two. If you ever played T2 fan missions, I am looking for something similar to Saturnine's 7th Crystal (which is 20 years old now - wow, it was looong time ago). I found many suggestions concerning best missions, but best does not necessarily means with a strong emphasis on story and twists. So I am asking which of those best missions meets my criteria. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
  7. Right now I lack the skill, but maybe in the future. There is no rush, merely suggestions. The missions are perfectly fine already, and these are just details. I wasn't aware if updating other creators' missions, even OMs, was frowned upon or appreciated. I'll try and remember that. Thanks for your help!
  8. I am going to sort-of reveal that this is loosely like the nature of my upcoming mission. I noted it here when JackFarmer asked about things that are coming along in this post: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/profile/37993-jackfarmer/&status=3943&type=status It too is a builder church. The player is requested by a hopefully famous character in another mission to handle some business that is affecting the congregation. I am looking to invoke some info and history laid down in other missions as a hook story.
  9. any by skacky and a lot of the team members behind The Black Parade are worthwhile. they're often all part of the same fan-made continuity as TBP. for some different multi-mission series of various size i'd also recommend Godbreaker and Death's Cold Embrace. the authors of those are working on their own full length campaign for Thief 2, The Broken Goddess. There's also Feast of Pilgrims which won the T2 anniversary contest and was made between team members of both fan expansions.
  10. After several months of hard work, we are proud to announce the latest edition of "No Honor Among Thieves"!!! EFX EDITION!!! EFX reverb has been added to all missions! NHAT has never been more immersive. From the dry woody reverb of the local pub to the sonorous and lofty echo of the Cathedrals, prepare your ears for a auditory treat! PERFORMANCE!!! Several major sore spots that impacted performance in v3 and older have been substantially optimized. Players with less capable hardware will now be less frustrated traversing caves, courtyards, and forests. VISUALS!!! Many areas have been visually overhauled!!! Improved lighting, new scene geometry, new textures, new water effects ( thanks @Arcturus !!! ), more vertex blended terrains, and more. Some areas have been visually redesigned to better match the story and convey the key characters. GAMEPLAY!!! Some new play areas have been added. A little more rooftop action is available for climbers. A few new readables for side characters expand the lore of the mission. Improved AI scripted events in the final mission escape sequence!!! Other things: The ROQ videos have been converted to MP4 to make them more compatible with the latest TDM versions. This mission still uses 2.09 style API controlled videos, we will rework the menu gui to be 2.10 (beta) compatible shortly so that "Dev Build" players can enjoy the additional performance and improvements available in those builds. Credits: @Bikerdude for the majority of the mapping work in this overhaul @Dragofer for assisting with scripting and def setup @nbohr1more new cathedral textures and improved water material def setup, a few readables @Arcturus MD3 animated water and water textures Original crew: @Goldchocobo @RailGun @Mortem Desino who created the original version along with updates to versions up to v2.0. Thank you for permission work on this update! V4 Beta testers: @AluminumHaste @JackFarmer Screenshots: Hotfix release: Should fix two minor issues: Newest Hotfix: Gdrive - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1e_LHa4RdZ0a1AD3FhgLq7OwvBmWUchJZ/view?usp=sharing Onedrive - https://1drv.ms/u/s!AuwAFc1gTZzehn0z9PsAVEIH0iFn?e=Gj0p6O ( Some additional performance optimization to the forest and fixes to other items found by Biker and Aluminumhaste in another round of testing.) 11. https://youtu.be/fwJwNLRY4kg "I am not enjoying my journeys, its so cold at the moment I imagine the chill could freeze a candle flame into a fire-gem and ole scratch's tears solid to his stoney face. Suffice to say, I'll be happy to get out of these whipping winds. A friend has asked me to keep an eye on his place while he is out of town. That part of Bridgeport is quiet enough, but he has been having a few problems he would like sorted out. I will know more when I get there." Build Time: God knows, too many hours. Thanks:- - As always espect to the Dark Mod team and for all the hard work they put and continue to put into it. - Flanders for his excellent models and textures. - Special thanks to the people that answered my technical questions on the forum. - Beta testers: Oldjim, Lowenz, AluminumHaste, Greyman, nbhormore, McPhisto, Lost_soul, Pranqster and the original testers! Info: An update of the original Christmas Contest mission for TDM 1.08. List of updateds:
  12. Have you guys ever noticed this English gentleman? https://piped.kavin.rocks/channel/UCSqIEwL7Olwd_krFWhEsTIg He has done plenty of Dark Mod mission playthroughs. I checked several of his walkthroughs the past few weeks and I have the impression he is playing the missions thoroughly and very, very slowly - to clarify: he's playing TLC from my HH series right now and towards the end the session already has 10 (!) videos of 40-60 (!!) minutes each....but then again I recall that before beta I myself estimated a playing time of five to seven hours, so... Anyway, he also played my favorite DM mission The Accountant 2 sometime ago - I will definitely watch all related videos in the next days as I have the feeling that it will be quite interesting because of the level design. So if you're looking for playthroughs where the player really sneaks through the mission and suspects the end (or something even worse) behind every wall, then you've come to the right place.
  13. Shadowhide has released his TDM FM and it needs a release thread here. I'll quote from his release thread on TTLG. Edit: Shadowhide has released v.1.01 now which is compliant with TDM2.0 & a few other changes (like the music and loading screen). Here's the new download: http://rghost.net/48078929 http://darkfate.org/...ceptive_shadows
  14. I'll put it at the top of my queue of missions to play, even if just to see the size of it. Is it explicitly said to be Libre with all its components? Mission story, models, textures, readables, and sound? If it is not, then I don't see that it would work to just change the assets it uses. If there is no mission that is explicitly said to be libre today, I see two options: * Ask if any author(s) would be willing to re-license one of their missions including its assets. * Try enlisting people interested in helping creating a libre mission from scratch. (Assuming it is even possible to play a mission which uses absolutely none of the 2.3 GB media/gamedata.) (Is it?)
  15. YOU TAFFERS! Happy new year! Deadeye is a small/tiny assassination mission recommended for TDM newcomers and veterans alike. Briefing: Download link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JWslTAC3Ai9kkl1VCvJb14ZlVxWMmkUj/view?usp=sharing Enjoy! EDIT: I promised to someone to write something about the design of the map. This is in spoiler tags below. Possibly useful to new mappers or players interested in developer commentary.
  16. Is there non-libre media/gamedata that every mission will absolutely require? Even a mission created completely from scratch and only using its own stand-alone models, textures, music, and sound? E.g. is the Lantern image on the HUD libre? Yes, I understand that it may not be doable to replace (or re-license) all current gratis but non-libre media/gamedata used by current missions, but that may not be necessary. Hence my question (2) about a "TDM-libre" version consisting of only the game engine, all non-libre media/gamedata removed, but include a basic mission using (stand-alone) media/gamedata that is libre. This will honor the will of contributors not wanting their work in commercial projects, and still make a limited version of TDM qualify as libre software for the benefits I describe. Does anyone know why? A browser like Chromium or Firefox qualifies as libre but can be used to view and download non-libre content. This is what I'm going for in question (1). If there are libre TDM missions available, then the TDM installer would be similar to Steam in that regard.
  17. In a few lists, TDM missions are presented sorted (or sortable) alphabetically: * In the mission downloader GUI * On the web page: https://www.thedarkmod.com/missions/ * On the wiki: https://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Fan_Missions_for_The_Dark_Mod The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) recommends placing initial articles (The, A, An) at the end of the full title: "A Tale of Two Cities" would appear as "Tale of Two Cities, A". Titles do not include subtitles unless they are essential for identification. If a subtitle is included, the initial article should be placed at the end of the full title, not before the subtitle. (https://style.mla.org/articles-and-alphabetization/) I mentioned this in "0006339: Polishing menus: mission downloader" (https://bugs.thedarkmod.com/view.php?id=6339), but I suggest following CMOS in all cases where titles are an entry in a list.
  18. Hi, this mission is crashing on my system and I cannot go on. Playing "Hidden Hands - The lost citadel" Version 6 on Fedora Linux Version 38. I paste the whole output of the console below. 19. Just to remind anybody that this is one of the best FM's out there (though I haven't played all available missions yet). I couldn't find a link to a "Best Fan Mission" thread or a web page anywhere ranking missions, so I'm left with congratulating the author here. So many thanks to Gelo "Moonbo" Fleisher for their mission.
  20. The attribution ("BY") part of the CC-licenses requires: 1) You must give appropriate credit, 2) provide a link to the license, 3) and indicate if changes were made. The TDM license provides a link to the CC-BY-NC-SA 3.0 license, so part (2) could be said to be fulfilled. For (1) I would expect that each asset author is somehow credited by name and a link if the asset was found online, and for (3) I would expect a comment saying something if a change was made to the asset before it was added to TDM. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there are currently no core assets licensed as anything else than CC-BY-NC-SA. If there are, please tell me how to find them and how I can read their respective licenses. I don't think there is a way to track licenses on a per-asset-basis. I raised that question in this topic. Given the thousands of hours of work put into this game, I wouldn't want to leave it to chance... This licensing stuff may not be the hottest topic, but it may be worth talking about to prevent unpleasant surprises. Agree. And that a mapper working in Dark Radiant can see the license for each asset when they choose which asset to use, as suggested in the "tracking licenses"-thread I mentioned above. Yes, a mapper who wants to create a libre mission will have restrictions on which assets to use. If they don't require their mission to be libre, it will work as usual. If there is a way to add libre assets to the core assets, then it will get easier with time. Under current circumstances, a libre mission will not be nearly as good as any of the few missions I have played so far, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it pointless. I think it would be good enough to qualify the mission+engine as a game and get it into e.g. both the Debian repository and the LibreGameWiki. It's a starting point and hopefully it can attract the attention of more people wanting to work on the game. "def files" are CC-BY-NC-SA according to the TDM license. Does anyone know which license the core scripts are?
  21. What a masterpiece you people have created!!!! Is surely on the very top of the missions I have played so far. The docks area was absolutely lovely, so much that I hesitated to enter the mansion, even after fulfilling the optional loot goal on expert, as I wanted to keep searching the area for ever. All that crazy mandling all around!!!!! And, then, here came the mansion!!!! Thank you all for your great work!
  22. Is "assets" synonymous to "media/gamedata"? And are you referring to the 2.3 GB media/gamedata included in TDM at install? If all 2.3 GB media/gamedata were removed from the "TDB-libre" version, then no license change would be needed. Say then we have a small fan mission that is entirely libre, built entirely from libre assets and created to intentionally avoid using any of the current 2.3 GB media/gamedata. If we wanted to play that mission using only the source code, what media/gamedata components would be missing to do that? * GUI graphics and music? * HUD elements? * Any in-game sounds? * Inventory objects? * ... anything else that can neither be included in the mission's own media/gamedata, nor avoided during mission design? I'm assuming here that a mission actually can include its own media/gamedata (textures, sound, models), but I may be wrong and I'm grateful for any explanation that helps me understand. If you ask me, the TDM-installer works perfectly already today, and the instructions are brief and easy to follow. Installation from the Debian repository would be somewhat easier, but I also see other (perhaps greater) benefits which I mentioned earlier.
  23. New script for mappers: my flavour of a fog density fading script. To add this to your FM, add the line "thread FogIntensityLoop();" to your map's void main() function (see the example in fogfade.script) and set "fog_fade" "1" on each foglight to enable script control of it. Set "fog_intensity_multiplier" on each info_location entity to change how thick the fog is in that location (practically speaking it's a multiplier for visibility distance). Lastly, "fog_fade_speed" on each foglight determines how quickly it will change its density. The speed scales with the current value of shaderParm3, using shaderParm3 = 1000 as a baseline. So i.e. if shaderParm is currently at 1/10th of 1000, then fade speed will be 1/10th as fast. Differences to Obsttorte's script: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/14394-apples-and-peaches-obsttortes-mapping-and-scripting-thread/&do=findComment&comment=310436 my script uses fog lights you created, rather than creating one for you. Obsttorte's script will delete the foglight if entering a fogfree zone and recreate it later more than one fog light can be controlled (however, no per-fog-light level of control) adding this to the map requires adding a line to your void main() script, rather than adding an info_locations_settings entity with a custom scriptobject spawnarg in my script, mappers set a multiplier of fog visibility distance (shaderParm3), while in Obsttorte's script a "fog_density" spawnarg is used as an alternative to shaderParm3 smaller and less compactly written script fogfade.scriptfogfade.map
  24. A thief adventurer called Mudgeon thwarted my raid on King Aldreth's Crypt. He sold the plunder and established himself in the Bellworth district. He kept Aldreth's crown and The Chalice of Kings.. Mudgeon has had time to relax his guard. I intend to take advantage... Please post all feedback and questions in this thread.
  25. Hey marbleman. Just taking the opportunity to thank you for your walkthrough vids of Thief 1, 2 and TDM missions. I found quite a bit of help with finding stuff in there. Thanks for your missions as well.
