  1. Did a great find today: Quake 4 mods for dummies. Now online readable. http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/5576-book-quake-4-mods-for-dummies/?p=412644

  2. Diego's recommendation of the week*: The Messenger. Started playing with zero expectations. I had this on my wishlist but I don't remember when I put it there, so I just bought it blind during a sale and started playing. Man, what an amazing surprise I had! What I'm about to say would be qualified as spoiler in my book but the trailer and the game description on steam seem quite proud to announce it. But I'll put a spoiler tag anyway. Maybe play the game without watching the trailer or reading the description lol that's what I did and I'm glad I did it. As a snob and picky gamer it's nice to have more than one contender for game of the year. (Return of the Obra Dinn is still ahead) Should we maybe make a topic just for game suggestions? I played TWO good games this year so I feel like I'm spamming now. * More like biannual
  3. A music video, that's a doom-style FPS browser game about waiting in line, where you have to punch yourself in the face: http://www.waitinginline3d.com/

  4. I just bought this game on Steam recently, and I really recommend it. Short review: It was released in April 2013 and now it's an enhanced version. Concept You are group of "dirty criminals" in Monaco that break into banks, embassies, grab quest items and loot and escape (ring a bell?) as quickly as you can (leaderboards). You can play 1-4 players campaign or featured FMs (at least) both online (there's a kind of matchmaking) and offline (need extra gamecontrollers for multi). And I think there is a PvP mode, not tested yet. Graphics The view is like a map from above. You have a field of view depending on walls and obstacles. It is pixel art, a lot of bright colors, static and popping icons. I find it beautiful, but some might not like it. Gameplay You run, sneak and interact with items. Once you have discovered them, they appear on the map. Every player has a basic set of interactions: lockpicking, deactivating lasers, climbing ladders, hidding in bushes, hacking computers, using disguise, reviving allies... You can choose among 8 characters: locksmith, pickpocket, hacker, lookout... They all have special abilities or/and can perform the basic ones faster. So, depending on the mission design, they can be more or less performant. You can use different items: smokebomb, guns, C4,... But ammo is scarce as you need to collect loot to have some. You can chat and talk in multi. There's a HUD to guide you through the levels. Storytelling The game is in English, but since it's Monaco, all the barks are in French, I think. But the icons warn you about alert state anyway. The campaign has a simplistic story, but there is a lot of humour (funny IMO). Some clichés I liked alot since I'm French myself My experience I played solo at first to learn at my pace. I played for hours without being bored or frustrated at any time. You can really play in a stealthy way, but because of the graphics and tone, it's more of a tactical game. I found it quite challenging after a few missions and even died. Then I played multi online with random ppl, and it was so chaotic! There was always someone who would do a mistake and we would trigger all the alarms and aggro the guards, running everywhere, shooting, trying to hide, reviving dead allies. I couldn't stop laughing. I think it's realy hard to do it properly this way but it's funny. Finally I played offline with my brother and we managed some good coop combinations (like I switch electricity off while he lockpicks the vault). I'm looking forward to playing 4-team with my friends! Just so you know you can buy a 4-pack with yours + 3 gift codes (what I did). And there is a -60% sale on Steam until january 2nd, on both single and 4-pack. But you have to buy it from Steam platform, not developer's website. Developer's website (for extra info): http://www.monacoismine.com/
  5. The thread title pretty much says it all. Whenever I attempt to change the mission and click 'save', Radiant exits with no message. When I reload my map, I am in the same situation - the map still has the wrong current project selected, and I cannot change it. Has this happened to anyone before? Any advice on handling it? EDIT: This isn't just a problem with one particular map - attempting to change this with any map loaded causes this issue to occur.

Looks very minimalistic. This could mean they focus more on gameplay, what would be good. Let's see how it turns out. The art design is definetely awesome.

  8. I am a total sucker for high-tech sneaking like Splinter Cell, so I am farely interested in this upcoming game. Maybe some of you are too? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_WGV9eL6r0
  9. Anyone playing Dying Light? Zombies with stealth gameplay? Just starting this yesterday and it's better than I expected. I'm playing on PC with xbox360 controller. Pros: First person (only) so definitely adds to the immersion and tension. There is body awareness - you can see your feet below and your arms and hands when mantling or using stuff. Works for me. Dunno if that can be disabled. Line of sight and distance stealth (not yet got to nighttime when the whole game becomes harder and I think and the zombies can see you better from what I've read. So, as far as I can tell, hiding in shadows won't help. btw Velvet Assassin has a rudimentary light gem equivalent but I've shelved that right at the start while I play Dying Light. I actually ghosted the first mini-mission outside but I don't know if that will always be possible for all missions. I'm currently faced with trying to rescue someone trapped in a building with zombies out front. I've reached there about 3 times and still trying to circle around to find a way in without a full frontal assault but not made it so far. Mantling is EXCELLENT! This is like Thief/TDM but set in a huge open modern apocalyptic city with tons of stuff to freely climb, jump, etc. It feels much like TDM, roughly look at a ledge or wall top and mantle up. If it's only a few inches of board or beam then instead you automatically grip it and can strafe (?) left and right and jump to something else in any direction, up, down, behind you, whatever. Slight downside is that jumping removes crouch so you can't scramble over rubble and keep crouching you have to remember to recrouch. In addition ladders and poles you can climb but these are more selective - move close and you get a key hint to grab hold so I guess that's the equivalent of a highlight. But the normal mantling works on anything climbable just as in Thief/TDM! Graphics are GREAT! Photo-realistic with much more detail than Grand Theft Auto 5 but whereas in GTA5 you can mostly only see the outer shells of buildings and can't enter much, in DL, you can enter most places and search for useful stuff. Lockpicking: Only briefly tried this and broke my pick real quick but it looks okay. On the xbox controller you rotate a screwdriver with one stick and the pick with another and avoid the vibes which threaten it's about to break. It appears to be a subgame screen - though I did hear a zombie groan nearby which scared the shite out of me because I wasn't sure. Sounds: really good, creepy. Tension: WOW! I'm looking over my shoulder all the while! btw there is a fov widener if, like me, you feel you want a wider vision. Cons: No leaning round corners. No shadow hiding (I don't think.) No selective gamesaves, no quicksave. It's all save points. This is a pain. So far it seems you have to complete a mission without a save! Also, I damaged my only weapon - a rusty pipe - so it's ineffective. Yet even though when I reloaded in a new session and had to play the mission again, the weapon was still damaged! (even though it happened before I died!) I'm going to search for a gamesave manager I read about somewhere, see if that helps. Hud is subjective. I'm okay with it. Reasonably discrete. Mini-map in corner with objective location. You can also press a key for special vision which for a few seconds reveals a few things including the objective location actually in the scene so you can see better where to head. I think at night it also reveals hidden zombies. I'll post a bit more when I've progressed a bit...
  10. Hey there taffers I always had game development as a hobby, even though I never finished anything. What matters is to have fun anyway. I hope the thread isn't considered as inappropriate advertising, I'm sharing here because it's a community I like to interact with and enjoys this style of gameplay. Also, any assets I make for that project goes for TDM as well (within reason, as it's not the same setting). This particular project is one that I have cooking in the back of my brain for years and never had the courage to start development because, well, it's my pet project! the one I treasure the most, and want it to be well done etc. The idea came after years playing stealth games, in particular thief and tdm, and thinking about the game design challenges that stealth brings. In shooters, for example, you can get shot several times and even heal yourself occasionally, so there is a whole gradient of possibilities between success and failure, as in stealth you're either unseen (success) or seen (failure). There are ways to get around it. Thief does it by shifting a little bit from stealth to action by providing escape, defense and diversion tools. Some players (me) don't like it and resort to quick load frequently and it's just not too much fun. My solution to keep it 100% stealth, which gives rise to this project, is to give more planning tools to the player, making the possibility of getting caught a direct consequence of bad planning instead of chance. Maps, routes, specific informations, the player has all this info before he starts the mission, makes all the notes he wants and he can review and alter them during execution. The down side is that it completely loses the exploration aspect, so valued in games today. But what are indie and hobbyist devs for if not for experimenting with different concepts? The setting is inspired by 70s design and technology and the story is the classic espionage novel style. The player is a field agent of some intelligence organisation equipped with fictitious technological gadgets, and his missions will probably be to steal information, documents, take photographs, eavesdrop etc. I'm using the Unity engine to develop. If anyone wants to read more about it, or even help me getting a working prototype, let me know
  11. I really want this in Dark Mod now, even if I know it won't happen. https://consequenceofsound.net/2018/12/composer-of-the-year-john-carpenter/
  12. Don't worry, the name is wildly misleading. This interesting youtube channel features development stories of legendary games like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzD9ldLoc3c
  13. I'm currently in school full-time pursuing a degree in Computer Science going into my third year. Not a master programmer by any means, but I like to think that I'm fairly competent and a quick study. So far I've done most of my work/projects in C++, Java, FXML/XML, Python, R and Javascript/HTML/CSS, but have dabbled in C, C#, PHP, Kotlin, Go and Clojure. Right now I'm on Summer break and doing an internship, but I also have a good amount of free time to work on personal projects and if applicable or at all needed I'd be interesting in assisting the development of the platform. Since finding out about TDM a few weeks back (just prior to the release of 2.06) I have played through a dozen or so missions and it has quickly become one of my favorite games of all time. It takes everything I loved about the Thief series and improves on the mechanics and adds the variety and power of a passionate community to create one of the best games I've played in years. If there is anything I can do to help make this game even better I'd be more than willing to assist. I have also recently begun to develop my own level for the game (currently in the early stages of developing the story and learning how to effectively use DarkRadiant) which I hope to have ready for testing and release by the end of the Summer. I also just want to shout out to and thank everyone who has contributed to this project so far because you all have developed something absolutely exceptional.
  14. Just thought i'd start one of those fancy survey thingie. Mine would be Deus Ex, for sure. Never played anything like it anymore. Really pretty perfect in all regards. Followed by Fallout 3 Game of the Year Edition with all addons, System Shock 2, and the Thief's. Also, every GTA part since part 3 has been pretty great.
  15. I'll answer this one more specifically later. However, I'm a bigger fan of the earlier Tomb Raider games by Core Design. I love Nathan McCree's work in TR1-3. Overall, it's tough for me to choose my favorite, but I'd probably have to pick from 1 or 2. I think I might go w/ Tomb Raider II. I'll get into the details later. Personally, I can't stand the CrystalD games. These just aren't the same and I am so over reboot Lara/ Tomb Raider. The first reboot game was alright then I completely lost interest after Rise. I still haven't purchased or played Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The week it came out I was having too much fun replaying TR1-3. The new games just aren't the same.
  16. Masseffect 3 & Origin spyware Dont know if you guys are aware of this - http://youtu.be/Ri0vrJ-y2zM Like others I have absolutely no intention of using origin due to its spyware-like scanning practices of your personal computer. Cutting storyline required content from the main game so the total price ends up being £54 (UK) or $80 (US) or $100 (AUS) - EA/Bioware can f**k right off! Yet again we have a perfect example of situation that harms the legitimate paying player forcing them to torrent a copy of either the missing DLC of the whole game. And here is another example of this activity - techspot article

I've found it difficult to find where TDM is listed as #1 on Greenlight. This page ( https://steamcommunity.com/greenlight/ ) has no ranked listing. This one ( https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=858048394 ) has no visible rank or stats page. Is it my script blocker?

  17. For Honor (base game without add-ons) is free on steam till 27th.

"This is a fantastic package - a dark, witty tale of death and retribution that can be whatever you want it to. It captures the ebb and flow of tension that stealth games forgot about years ago, but presents it in a way that feels utterly contemporary." Playstation Official Magazine UK
  19. Ok. 2 scolars are absent due to illness, so I got time to fill up until the next one arrives. Which stealth games do you know? Here are my favorite stealth- and stealth-action games: Some of them are not stealth only but leave it up to the players choice to play it that way. Thief 1 / 2 / 3 The Dark Mod System shock 1 / 2 Assassins creed 1 / 2 / BH Splinter Cell Oblivion Skyrim Far cry 3 crysis 1 / 2 / 3 Stealth Bastard Monaco: Whats yours is mine Announced: Thi4f Middle-earth: shadow of mordor (in development) Routine (in development) Alien isolation (in development) Any more suggestions ?
