  1. What's going on with the Thi4f forums? They've been down for almost a week now.

Well that's not going to work. If they can't post about Thi4f on the Thi4f forums they can come and post about TDM on the TDM forums.

People thought it was the server migration under Square-Enix that we've been told about, but they came back online like nothing happened, and the dedicated thread about the coming migration had no new info.

      Can't see this?:

maybe it was a migration test, and it broke.

"for some reason" I imagine is you being sarcastic as we all know everybody and their brother/sister are online on Sunday either shopping or looking at porn combined with all the gaming packets.

I'm sure there are also people just "reading things for the articles" though...

    Forums fixed

Had a problem with the web server yesterday that led to a crashed table in the forum database. This has now been repaired and things seems to work again. I was on travel so it took a while before I was able to fix it. Merry Christmas!
  4. I just have to build a courtyard and then I've finished all the building work on the manor for The Angel's Tear which is the prequil to the Vengeance for a Thief Maps. The manor is bloody massive! A Hell of a lot bigger then I orinally intended. Hopefully it will provide a few hours of fun.

There's 6 pictures in the What Are You Working on Thread. I don't want to spoil any more of the map.

  10. I'm browsing the "inspiration" thread from the sky somewhere just south of Iceland. First time I've been on a plane with Wi-Fi. Our European planes don't have this, or at least, not the airlines I usually fly on :-)

  11. Just wanted to say, Hello! From reading through various posts in the forums it seems like a great community and I hope to become a part of it. So I got the hankering for some Thief as of late and stumbled on TDM through some googling. After purchasing Doom 3 through Steam and instaling TDM, I have been nostalgiacly playing through many of the FMs and have also decided to d/l the Radiant editor and start making a mission, maybe many, we'll see. As it turns out also, I just started (today!) my 1 week vacation from work and intend to dive in to the Radiant editor and am currently going through the A-Z wiki on it. A bit of background on me, I 'used' to work in application support till the economic crash a couple years ago and was laid off and am now running a machining center at a local machine shop, using Mastercam daily, 2D/3D stuff and have always wanted to make a mission/game, and decided since I've always enjoyed the Thief series and stealth gameplay so much, this is where I would start. After getting to my third year in Mechanical Technology I changed my major to Information Technology (should have went with straight Computer Science but ahhh hindsight). I've always loved building things and designing things and also really enjoy computers, art, audio, and the entire visual experience as presented to a user. I have created a couple playable maps before using the older source engine editor so I'm vaguely familiar with 3D modeling, skyboxes, lighting, AI pathing, etc. That's been over 10 years ago though. I got familiar with 3dsmax, ProE, Autocad, and Mastercam in my first major during school so that helps a bit when familiarizing with a new editor and as previously mentioned I've dabbled around in the Valve Source editor. I'm also very much looking forward to the Crucible of Omens campaign created by the marvelous talent at TDM and would like to help in any way I can once I'm familiar with the Radiant engine. I can also do many many voices, I've often thought about moving out to Cali from Indiana and finding work in voice-overs, voice acting, etc. All this started as a youngster with little friends, time on my hands, and imaginary friends. Wow that's hard to admit. So anyway, I've been working on a shadowy Garrett voice, and can do guards and some women characters with old, old english, gruff, slippery, sneaky, terrifying, voices and personalities. Just thought I'd mention that as it may be a way that I could contribute early on and would also enjoy. So anyway, too much about me and not enough A-Z wiki, back to the tutorial! Glad to be here and hope for good things to come.
  12. Just a heads up that the header images are now missing from the top of the forum. I suspect due to domain forwarding or something like that?

  15. Hi guys. I’m looking at some tracker issues in the hope of providing some useful patches to grayman and greebo. For this one I could do with advice from mappers who've used objectives in plenty of ways I've never thought of! Should a target_setobjective_amount give the mapper any control other than the new "amount" requirement? The other objective-affecting targets (addobjectives, setobjective_state, setobjective_visibility, setobjective_component_state) don't have extra spawnargs to let the mapper control whether there's a HUD message or anything else. The one exception is setobjective_state which lets you add an "unlatch_irreversible_objectives" spawnarg so you can choose whether to undo irreversible objectives. Would a target_setobjective_amount need any? I guess "unlatch_irreversible_objectives" is relevant to this one too, as the default behaviour should probably be: undo a completed objective if the required amount gets raised above what the player has achieved, except if it's an irreversible objective. The lazy way to go about this kind of thing is to add a dozen spawnargs/options so every mapper has to look them up and answer the questions for themselves, but it'd be better to take the cue from the existing targets and implement just the most useful behaviour instead. Any thoughts on how it should work?
  16. So I've been complaining about this and that here and there and haven't yet taken the time to deliver some very deserved praise. Shame on me. So here it is, my thank you thread. (I don't mind if others use this thread for the same end. It's always good to have less threads saying the same thing, right?) Some back story: I've been craving for a proper stealth game for years, and thief seemed like it was dead (and in two weeks we'll probably confirm it really is). I tried replaying thief 1 and 2, but during the first mission I just couldn't keep going. For some reason, even though I nearly worship certain old games, I just can't play them. I tried my most favorites, such as thief, Strife, DK, JA2, XCOM Apocalypse, Pizza Tycoon, GTA. Carmageddon... to name just a few, and I just can't keep going past the first level, and I don't really know why. Not even Thief 3... but in this case it's maybe because I replayed it a couple of times before and I burned out. Modern stealth games don't really cut it for me (frowning at you Dishonored). Either the stealth elements are just dumb and stupid (AC, a stealth game??), or a plain fudge like Betheda's thieving (isn't all bad, but........... it's bad). So, modern games, bollocks. Back to old games. Oh wait, I can't play them... Though dilemma. I could keep going if I was playing a proper remake. If a modern game brings back the feel of the old one, I'm a happy panda! I couldn't play the new XCOM for too long, it's not bad game, but the XCOM title makes me expect a proper tactical game, I couldn't play Jagged Alliance 3, and these are way worse in comparison to the new XCOM, I want my money back from Duke Forever... I couldn't stand Doom 3 even (which is why I hadn't tried, nor looked into, TDM before - I could go on all day about how bad D3 is, so don't tempt me - same with Oblivion). I've been craving for something to chew on, and found nothing at all. Found plenty of messed up crap . And none of it are stealth games... So I'm feeling like I'm going "down the shi'er". Then I found TDM. And this is what I found so great about TDM, is that it feels like thief (it kinda lacks that Josh Randall music style though :S). At first I barely even noticed the differences (the ones that prevent copyright issues), I just felt like I was playing thief! Another interesting thing was that I read the gameplay article on the wiki and learned that there were guards with helmets, but they fit so nicely into the game that I only noticed them after I crossed paths with them quite a few times. The lockpicking mechanics didn't feel out of place either. Everything so far seems to fit perfectly into the game. I not only want to thank you for the mod, but I also want to congratulate you on the execution of it. The voice acting is amazing, very... natural. And oh, am I a voice acting critic.... I keep destroying bethesda on this subject (and many other subjects) whenever I can, and I praise Valve endlessly for it. I try to be fair, but it's something I take as very important in games, and not a lot of games get it right. I must congratulate the voice actors here (I'm not yet fully aware of who they are). Other than that, aesthetics are also really good (textures, models, etc - non-mapper stuff). I wouldn't expect this level of standards when considering taking a look at a mod. I might not find this level of quality a few years back, but to be fair that wouldn't hurt my opinion. I like good graphics, but to me it's by far not as important as the gameplay and sounds. That said, it's still surprisingly good. Also, that said, the mapper sided stuff seems to be doing very well. The standards here blossom some really good quality and good looking stuff. So I found a "remake" of one of my most favorite games ever, which looks amazing, plays very solidly, feels pretty much like the original, and has entertained me for a lot of hours already. Plus, it's on a BSP engine (quake based? I don't know if doom engine is based on quake's engine per se, but seems too similar), which I happen to be quite acquainted with, and that allows me to scratch my mapping itch that I had nagging me since Valve destroyed my beloved HL2dm for which I was mapping for a few years (and where the mapping quality standards where as good as the bottom of my toilet after I let go of a generous, reeking torpedo). What else could I ask? I'm sort of living the nostalgia of my teenage years with this game. For all that and more, thank you all so much. PS: Now I just need Jagged Alliance:Flashback, Carmageddon 4 and War For The Overworld to be some proper remakes/reboots, and I'll have all I need to morph into a teenager for real. And someone in this freaking world should remake Strife!
  17. Seems with the amount of knowledge here that many of us here would have a computer related income. Not I, my primary income has nothing to do with using computers. My side work is sound engineering. Now if I could turn that into the breadwinner I'd be a happy goose.
  18. Anyone familiar with trigger_presize who might explain how to use it? It's description is identical to trigger_multiple, "Variable sized repeatable trigger." How does it differ? Why does it exist in addition to other triggers? Where/when would a mapper want to use it? What spawnargs are used with it? I actually find not a single forum post or wiki reference to it other than my placeholder in the trigger wiki page on it, which is no help whatsoever. ;-) Appreciate any insights please! PS: Note to self, I do notice unlike trigger_multiple, it doesn't use worldspawn brush boundaries, but comes in at 128x32.
  19. My boss told me off today. he said I have to do more work and spend less time talking to the new little redhead girl. The thing is, whenever I make her laugh or smile, I feel like my heart explodes and enough fireworks detonate to blow the houses of parliment to the moon.
