Hello fellow mapper comrades!

The briefing wiki article has been updated and now it gives simple instructions how to create

  • Text-only Briefings
  • Button Controlled Animated Briefings
  • Timed Flowing Animated Briefings

The article also contains a simple packages to edit in order to easily create animated briefings of both types. Note that the briefing_flowing package has a .gui-file which has been fixed against the ESC-press-no-more-mouse-cursor -issue (thank you LEGION!).

Animated Briefing Creation has never been this easy! (And fun.)

Enjoy!

EDIT: I have linked from the wiki article to the briefing package creation .zip's which are currently hosted at mediafire. Would it be possible to have them in a more stable place? I am talking about two .zip files weighing approximately 100kb each. It would be nice if we had these easily accessible from the wiki article. I tried to attach them to this post but alas I cannot.

Thanks, Sotha.

I skimmed through the Wiki. I'm interested in the button-controlled briefing. Though everyone has their own tastes, I'm hoping that button-controlled briefings prevail in future maps, for the simple reason that it's easier to debug a map when one doesn't have to continuously sit through a long timed briefing, since the ESC key won't drop you out of a briefing correctly.

(I'm sure someone will now tell me how to skip a briefing; I haven't looked in the code yet to find how to do that.)

With the free briefing you just LMB. With Sotha's buttoned one you hit the double arrow on the right as I recall.

@Sotha: I'll put your zips on my contributions site but I'm out of time tonight. Manyana. zzzzzzzzzz

This could not have come at a more opportunate time. Thank you! :)

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. @Sotha: OK, I've mirrored the zips here.....

BTW when you link to other pages in the wiki ... well, here's a paste from my notes....

Both Wiki pages and Wiki headers within those pages can be linked to. NOTE THAT LINKING IS CASE SENSITIVE!

To link to a Wiki page use PageName

To link to a header from within the same page use #HeaderName

To link to a header within another Wiki page use [PageName#HeaderName]]

To have alternate text show as the link, (eg, GO HERE instead of a lengthy page name or page name#header) use AlternateText or AlternateText

To link to an external website use eg, http://www.name.com

To link to an external website with alternate text showing as link use The Dark Mod

didn't realize we had an article. Been meaning to do that for years but kept putting it off until tomorrow. ;)

Did you ever check out the navigation menu on the left of the wiki? There's a link called "Wiki Help". :)

I think you will accomplish this if you take the mainmenu_*.gui files from the ulysses.pk4 guis folder. Then edit the mainmenu_custom_defs.gui (or similar name) and remove the briefing video references: MM_BRIEFING_VIDEO_1 "" instead of MM_BRIEFING_VIDEO "briefing_video"

Also set the duration to zero.

Not tested, but could work.Do note that no briefing means no idea what to do... sounds a bit like a bad idea.

Thanks Sotha i'll give it a shot, and because my mission explains what to do via characters at the start / an ingame cinematic I don't need a briefing ;)

Is there anywhere that these files can still be obtained? All the links on the Wiki and in this thread are dead.

My missions:           Stand-alone                                                      Duncan Lynch series

It's about 2 files right?

  1. Button Controlled Animated Briefing (zip)
  2. Timed Flowing Briefing (zip)

And maybe mainmenu_briefing.gui but it should possibly be updated.

I might still have them somewhere. Strange they are not included in core, or downloadable in the wiki or moddb. You can also find them in missions probably.

Here you go: https://drive.google.com/file/d/18sZ_8scj3gS3YaLGHaoH9_mwEVt_f5id/view?usp=sharing

I don't know if this is the newest edition, but I downloaded them in 2021.

Someone can upload the file to the darkmod ftp and then it can be included in the wiki.

I don't have the mainmenu_briefing.gui file with changes for controlling where the player starts.

Only images can be uploaded to the wiki, but the zipped files are small enough to be posted to the forum, so I'll put them here and link to this post from the wiki. That should safeguard against further link rot.

<edit> links removed; updated ones can be found further along in this thread

Actually, the zip files consists of a txt based gui file and a bunch of images, so it could be placed as text and images inside the wiki page.

The button controlled briefing gui file has a couple of time "BriefingAnimation" in it, but this doesn't seem to do anything. Probably because there's no "windowDef BriefingAnimation", which is present in the Timed Flowing Briefing.

Possibly @Sotha created the button controlled briefing from the gui file of the Timed Flowing Briefing and then forgot to remove these, but the gui errors were not shown at the time (added later by @stgatilov). This gives some console errors.

Also, there is a semicolon missing at line 196, giving a console error:

			set "cmd" "play sound/meta/menu/mnu_select"

I posted about it before, but I think the default tdm logo video looks outdated. For a (i.m.o.) better looking version, you can download the pk4 attached to this post and plonk it in your tdm root folder. Every mission that starts with the tdm logo then starts with the better looking one. Try for example mission COS1 Pearls and Swine.

I finished DOOM - The Dark Ages the other day. It is a decent shooter, but not as great as its predecessors, especially because of the soundtrack.

I just uploaded a new version of the Visible Player Hands mod. It's been updated for TDM 2.13 and has new animations. Check out the post if you're interested!
