Next Vocal Set -- What would you choose?

Springheel

Recommended Posts

We now have 11 male vocal sets (3 of them builders) and TylerVocal is working on a 12th:

Pro -- cold and calculating

Thug -- crude and violent

Grumbler -- mumbling complainer

Simpleton -- uneducated lout

Lord -- snooty and proud

Critic -- snooty and whiny

Average Jack -- generic

Commander -- stern and bossy

Young Builder

Builder

Builder 2

[unnamed slow talker voice] -- drawn out and bored

He's willing to do more, but I'm starting to run out of ideas for characters. Vocal sets add to loading time and general mod bloat, so I can't keep adding new ones indefinitely, and some, like on old man voice, might be too specialized to be worth it. What kind of voice/character are we missing that you would like to see if you had the choice?

Vocal sets are based on personality/character, not profession (except for Builders, who speak completely differently). Although I do provide a few profession-specific lines for various characters. So there is a "Critic" vocal set, as well as a "Critic Mage" and a "Critic Inventor" vocal set (mostly the same lines but with about a dozen different lines for that profession). The Commander has a mage version as well. The Average Jack set has specific lines for merchants, beggars and cooks, and the new one Tyler is doing has lines specific to the City Watch.

Some more female vocals would be nice. IIRC in the last update, one of the female vocal sets was cut out of the mod. This was likely due to less than perfect audio quality. There are two female vocal sets currently, right?

Nothing was cut out, although one of the sets is of poor quality. We still have three female sets. More would be nice, but I doubt Tyler can do female voices....

How about an Inventor \ Scientist ?

How about a charismatic political activist?

Or a smarmy politician?

Here are some ideas:

Young & excitable rookie

Older world-worm cynic that's seen it all before

Out of shape guy that's trying to keep up

Malevolent guy that enjoys the suffering of others

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Only one male vocal set is missing:

The Drunk.

Idle vocals would be drunken retarded slow-pace muttering about getting more ale, tavern wenches and he would indulge in drunken out-of-tune humming and signing.

"*hic* heey! Whosha taffin' abough in thar? *burp* Methinksa I heard sumthi*hic* sumthing somewhere over thar."

Clipper

-The mapper's best friend.

A noble guy who is speaking of himself in the third person. Maybe even in a narrative manner.

"Was it a noise he had heard from the shadows." "He was annoyed by the repetitive disturbance, and went finding out where it came from."

Maybe a bit too strange.

I think the "Sinister merchant" / "Schemer" character (like in Tyler's "King John's Assassin" sample) would be excellent. Someone who is intelligent, educated, but just a bit indolent.

Something like...

"Two bales of poppies and no takers so far... disappointing."

"Break their hearts or break their legs? Hmmm. What a question!"

"What lurks over there in the shadows?"

"Knight or knave, show yourself!"

etc.

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

This kind of matches my recommendation for a malevolent guy, which is the one I thought was most adding something... a bit refined or methodical, also like count roogan in Princess Bride... takes pleasure in the bloody end of the job. I think we need a legit, almost steroetypical "bad guy" character villain, that can also serve as a rather disturbing guard.

Just recorded this, how do you guys think it sounds for a snob sinister merchant/person?

As Springheel said I am currently working on another character however I would love to do two personalities if you guys need it.

  • ROTFL, the poppy seller cracked me up, very impressive - your best voice by far. We could could make a new complete nobel set around this voice.
  • The old man sounded a bit like a Sean Connery impression, but good none the less.
  • And the zombies are good extra's for the existing zombie set/s

Hmm, I'd reduce the "snobby" and pump up the sinister, IMO. It _is_ very similar to the Princess Bride character, but I wouldn't use him for inspiration as he as played for laughs.

Yes listening to it now, I'd have to agree.

It also overlaps with the nobleman a bit, which takes up the snobby self-important niche.

Also, in the heat of action I think he'd have to be a bit more assertive.

It's always Spring's call though, so listen to him before us.

Made it less snobby and more sinister. I recorded two different styles the first is a bit more sinister and the second is a lot more sinister.

Let me know what you think

And again, ROTFL, the last bit were the character has gone quite insane - that was bloody awesome.. :-D

Now that I think of it, that voice deserve its own story based charcter -

++ NOTICE ++

The mad poppy killer has struck again, an unnamed woman was found dead in Belswains lane
with poppies strewn in a macabre fashion all around the corpse.

All citizens should be on the lookout for a man described as slight of build, pale in complexion,
wearing a tall hat and long over coat with a poppy in the lapel. Do not approach as considered
dangerous.

Until the killer is caught, curfew has been imposed from 10 bells to sunrise. All city gates will
be locked and any one caught on the streets will be subject to a search and possible incarceration
by the city watch.

The High sheriff, Archibald III

The new version is much better. The second one is cool but probably a bit too over the top for general use.

The first one is just about right. It will take me a while to come up with a new script for this character, but I'll see what I can do.

The FAQ wiki is almost a proper FAQ now. Probably need to spin-off a bunch of the "remedies" for playing older TDM versions into their own article.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
