The Starbound soundtrack has a lot of beautiful pieces in it.

 

It really does, one of my favorite elements of the game as it stands. Normally when I speed something up in a video I use the FTL soundtrack but Starbound's stood up on its own. http://youtu.be/hDcHhMamuoM?t=17m28s

@brethren kudos on z nemesis, i replayed that game last year. that soundtrack and the whole game was a far cry from previous games like RTZ, but totally awesome in its own right. the music in nemesis made the world feel super expansive in the same way that the lore of something like lord of the rings makes middle earth feel huge and unknowable in its entirety.

Neo Tokyo OST

 

My god, this OST has this crazy atmosphere and air that I rarely come across in any music at all. Amazing.

 

It sure has. I was following this mod for a long time and I read somewhere that the music was one of the things keeping it all together and pushing the team to finish. Too bad they just left the game adrift since first or second patch. No idea if the Steam Greenlight helped them get it going again. I absolutely loved everything in this, but as internet soon pointed out, there were many flaws in the multiplayer game mechanics. I never saw any news about trying to fix them, so I just keep it on disk and hope for something to come. The whole thing is worth checking out, especially for those who loved Ghost in the Shell.

watched the neotokyo trailer. gotta say, nothing about it roused my interest, including the music. don't see the relation to ghost in the shell other than some futurish stuff with inviso-camo.

If you want futuristic atmosphere you should check out E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy. That is one of the strangest games I've ever played. It runs on the source engine yet has an atmosphere I've never felt before when playing anything, at all. It plays very differently, too. As a game it's not great, but I ended up playing it all the way through just for how different it felt.

Eh, thanks. I made some levels for it. Thick atmosphere was a major pillar of design, and the music is indeed beautiful. As far as I know we left some unused material in the music folder dating from before Olivier went on board.

EDIT: just checked and we didn't, in fact. The tracks then had a very different vibe and to be honest the ones used in the final product are much better.

Well you should be proud! In terms of level design it's brilliant. The game mechanics are iffy and clunky for the most part, but the level design and atmosphere are really something special. Still would've liked to hear the older music though.

NeoTokyo wasn't great because of the GitS references. It was great because it honed the Counterstrike system to a pretty refined state of gameplay. The three player types are pretty well balanced against each other. The setting just adds that much more to it.

 

The issue is if the servers dry up then there's nothing else to carry it.

If it had a single player campaign you could at least keep playing it.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

its good stuff. running an ordos campaign right now on the rewritten AI medium difficulty. bastards actually spam unit builds as fast as they can farm spice. harvester control really becomes clutch.

 

and, i shit you not, mission 2, motherfuckers tried to proxy concrete slab up to my base and build a barracks. unreal.

It is hard for me to separate actual music quality apart from game experience and sentiment. I guess I wouldn't care about some of those, if it wouldn't be attached to a good mood of particular game.

Err...I usually turn the music off during a game if it's not ambient. It hurts the immersion for me, because noone but Peter Griffin is cool enough to have his own theme music.

 

Even on the games I listed, I really didn't play with the music (Quake part one and Thief being exceptions because the music was so subtle).

 

Only games that I blasted through with music was Doom, Heretic, Hexen, because on the old computer my family used in the 90's we didn't even have a sound blast card yet, so the midi music was the only sound we had. I guess you can say those three games I also enjoy the music to, but probably because of hearing it so much, not because of instantly liking it.

      I posted about it before, but I think the default tdm logo video looks outdated. For a (i.m.o.) better looking version, you can download the pk4 attached to this post and plonk it in your tdm root folder. Every mission that starts with the tdm logo then starts with the better looking one. Try for example mission COS1 Pearls and Swine.
