1. @stgatilov Do you know why sndshd files cannot raise the volume of sounds? Also, there is conflicting advice from different devs about how to adjust the sound volume. Perhaps we should create another thread about this and arrive at an official TDM dev team solution.
2. I didn't want to spam this thread even more since I wasn't the one who was asked, but since you already replied: img2img does not work well for this use case as it only takes the colors of the original image as a starting point. Therefore it would either stay black & white and sketch-like or deviate significantly from the sketch in every way. Sometimes it's possible to find a balance, but it's time consuming and it doesn't always work. This probably used Control Nets, specialized addon neural nets that are trained to guide the diffusion process using specialized images like normal maps, depth maps, results of edge detection and others. And there's also a control net trained on scribbles which is what I assume Arcturus used. It still needs a text prompt, the control net functions as an added element to the standard image generation process, but it allows to extract the shapes and concepts from the sketch without also using its colors.
3. Trying to bring this thread back to the original topic. Had ChatGPT 4 generate ideas for a game. I chose 7-day roguelike because it's supposed to be simple enough. I would like to participate in the 7-day roguelike contest. It's a game jam where you make a roguelike game in 7 days - some preparation before that is allowed, you can have some basic framework etc, but the main portion of work is supposed to be done within the 7 days. Therefore it favors games with simple systems but good and original ideas. Some of the games contain "outside the box" design that stretches the definition of a roguelike. Please give me an idea of a 7-day roguelike that I could create. Be specific: include the overall themes and topics, describe the game world, overarching abstract ideas (what is the goal of the player, how does the game world works, what makes it interesting...) and specifics about gameplay systems. Describe how it relates to traditional roguelike games or other existing games. This is really not bad and after some simplification I could actually see it work, though I don't know if the mechanic is interesting enough. I had it generate two more. One was not roguelike enough (it was basically something like Dungeon Keeper), the other was a roguelike-puzzle with a time loop: you had to get through a procedurally generated temple with monsters, traps and puzzles in a limited amount of turns, and after you spend those turns, you get returned to the beginning, the whole temple resets and you start again, trying to be more efficient than last time.
4. The whole point of this thread is that ChatGPT and related generative AI technologies have the potential to "change the game" of game making. If the TDM community seems dead to you, remember that is only because there are very few people in the world with the skill set or resources to make fan mission, or even to contribute productively to discussing them. A lot more people like stealth games than have the time or talent to make them, much less learn how to make them. If new technology can lower the threshold for them to participate or even create an entirely new population of participants, that could be revolutionary for us. But the first step of that process is recognizing what this new technology is, what it's capable of, and where it fits within the pre-existing human social/economic/legal ecosystem. How else are FM creators and potential creators to know whether it is worth investing their precious time investigating this tech and integrating it into their processes? Hence the discussion so far. Something that I don't think has been brought up about this is that if anyone wishes to publish works while forbidding their use for creating any sort of derivative work, there are legal mechanisms right now that allow you to do that: You just need to keep your work under lock and key and make every person you allow to see it sign a legally binding confidentiality and non-compete agreement. This is extra effort and will generally require you to make proportionate concessions to the other party to make the agreement both legally valid and economically enticing, but it can be done. In fact it is done. Frequently. What you can't do is nail your work to the church door for all to freely see, or give it to every merchant to sell on the open market, and then retroactively decide you want to reserve additional rights for yourself! Can you imagine if the world actually worked like that? I cannot imagine a more fertile ground for corporate oppression. Imagine if Disney had the right to ban anyone who had ever seen Snow White from ever working in animation! Imagine if Activision could ban anyone who had ever played a Call of Duty from developing a competing modern military shooter. The only angle to this argument I think has a shred of validity is that maybe we can and should hold industrial actors to different ethical and legal standards from actual human beings. However I don't think that finger in the dike would hold back the storm surge for very long. Crowd sourcing is a thing, and there are plenty of people who would be happy to donate their C/GPU time and internet connections for AI research. In terms of legal strategies against generative AI, the copyright angle is the weakest of sauces. Even if the courts are taken in by the fallacious claims of the plaintiffs (which would not surprise me), their rulings will be just as unenforceable in practice as the music and film industries' fruitless wars against piracy. Worse in fact, because with generative AI there could be an actual arms race between uncovering and concealing evidence of illegal copying.
5. Hence why I mentioned the update in this thread. In addition, that is why there is an asterisk in the mission downloader that indicates whether an update to an FM is available
6. Loot/Stealth Presentation I haven't looked through this thread, so I hope I'm not chatting about something that has already been discussed. I just installed Version 2.11 and along with it the TDM Modpack. One of the things I've grown addicted to is having the enhanced "running tally" of loot in the bottom right of the screen (tdm_loot_stealth_stats.pk4). This disappears when the Modpack is enabled. Instead, I get the classic presentation of loot via the F3 key. The thing that I really miss is the total amount of loot available in the mission. The stealth stats are for ghosting, which I also use. I would love to spend more time using the Modpack, but not knowing how much loot there is in total makes the choice difficult. Unless I can keep "tdm_loot_stealth_stats.pk4" enabled somehow. Is this a possibility ?
7. This thread abounds in misunderstandings. I didn't start the thread to propose or claim that gpt-4 has human-like intelligence. I don't care HOW it does it, but WHAT it does. Look at the fruitage. Judge the results and consider how massively useful this is already. And it's a work in progress! Over the next few years this will have a massive impact on many areas of society. Can it help your business? Your health, Your writing? Your game design? Write your CV better? Instruct your kids? Organise your garden? Provide better produces and services? Make us all richer? Bring about world peace and end drought, famine, pestilence? Predict the next asteroid to hit Earth and propose the most efficient way to stop it? There is no need to try to defend whether it is 'intelligent' or this or that (except as a philosophical debate.) All that matters is what it can do. Honestly, it's as if I posted there is a nuclear missile headed to London and some are discussing its fuse is inferior and the metals of which it is constructed are over-engineered. Who cares? Look at what it can do! gpt-4 will be like social BOMB (for good we hope.) IMO it's the most important activity going on in the world today, and will have more impact than the invention of the telephone, radio, tv, internet, you name it. I cannot overstate what is happening here. Don't believe me? Watch and wait. Also, thanks, Jaxa for the link to that video. I was up in the night listening to that and it exactly addresses what I mean. Now I'm going to look at the links that Arcturus has posted.
8. I'm surprised I could find any thread here for chat-GPT. Version 4 is outstanding from all reports I saw and I can't wait to get my hands on. It's not just a chat-bot (though it can discuss anything with you in great depth.) It can grasp the MEANING of sentences and write its own. In future games, you'll be able to talk to NPC's like you would any human. Search for video: Unbelievable AI Breakthrough Interactive AI Characters in a Videogame for the First Time! This demo is outstanding. GPT will be WRITING games! It can write meaningful stories. It can fill in your tax form, prepare your business/wedding speech and discuss its merits with you, and organise your professional work rapidly It can understand humour It can teach! Efficently! Sensibly! Find the Khan Academy video. It can write code/script good enough to frighten a senior programmer who can see it already is as good as junior coders and some seniors. He's afraid because it is certain to take over HIS job in due time, possibly only months away. An AI bomb has been dropped with GPT-4 and many do not yet realise how life-changing it will be - greater even than the advent of the internet. I give it 5 years to change the efficiency of almost everything tenfold, a hundredfold.
9. @vorobThe versioning in the mission downloader works differently than the info/description which is just reading the a text file in the mission archive. Every time a mission gets updated the mission downloader will increment by one. Release is 1. First patch is 2. Second is 3, etc. If you have the latest version from the mission downloader, you have the latest version.
10. Books are out of scope for this thread, which is just concerned with subtitles. As an aside, because of the way book text is laid out (separate independent overlays for "title" and "body" text), changing the font from what the FM author provided would tend to make a mess.
11. Thanks for the replies, gonna try those spoiler Tags again now for my short review (oh well it inserted one above my text now and I can't seem to delete it on mobile - this text editor is strange)
12. Just finished this mission and wow I gotta say in great honor to Grayman and of course the rest of the team picking it up, this was something I've never seen before in any other TDM mission, especially visually wise. I am so happy that grayson gave green light for other experienced mappers to finish his last mission. And what came out of this is really something special. I'll put my review in spoiler tags since I'm now referring to critical mission details. Edit - How do I put spoiler text here on mobile??
test

test
[spoiler[spoiler [sfah
13. You can try my alternative footstep sounds package which addressed the things you described together with a lot of other footstep sounds both for player and AI if you want to. https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/17631-new-footstep-sounds/
14. @SeriousToni IIRC you were asking in another thread a while ago about dynamically changing sounds, or triggering different ones when you enter a room and stuff like that. I was just reading this about the sound override property and it reminded me about that conversation. It looks like you can use this property do maybe do some of that stuff you were asking about? https://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Location_Settings#Sound_Override
15. that is a good idea. Mods - can we lock this? If anyone else wants to help test, just post in the beta thread.
16. Mods can this moved again? @Acolytesix- can you make sure you post in the beta thread instead of this one please (this one is public, the beta thread is only for logged-in forum members): https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/21822-beta-testing-high-expectations/
17. sure - I would only ask that you follow the thread to make sure you don't report stuff that has already been mentioned: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/21822-beta-testing-high-expectations/
18. What type of leak is it? Is it an entity that leaks to the void, or a visportal being dropped? Have you tried looking at the pointfiles (File -> Pointfile)? Then CTRL+SHIFT+k to follow them to the leak. Also, this is the thread people usually use for help (ignore the 'newbie' in the title, everyone uses it):
19. Hi, I'm not completelly following everything what is being said in this thread, but I wonder if big changes are being applied that make it necessary to change subtitles later? I have been creating subtitles for existing missions lately. Is it possible that these files have to be modified later? If so, I stop now doing that until changes are made.
20. heh i was thinking the same though it might just have been a glitch when writing the names are pretty similar. But for correctness it is called the dark engine and the newer version that allows us to run these beauties on win10/11 is called newdark. newdark is kinda interresting as it just suddenly popped up on a french forum some time ago by an anonymous developer with the alias le corbeau who allegedly got his hands on the original source code and started updating it for modern OS. this was the original thread i believe -> https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140085 bikerdude was on that forum to when the patch hit i noticed hehe.
21. Okay, I had no idea, I have googled it up now and you are right, to my own surprise. Done, I´ve put some paragraphs which were previously not in spoiler tags into spoilers.
22. I literally got got for about 3 seconds until thread loaded. Thanks. Ray-tracing when
23. Thebigh is right. The pronunciation tripped me up too, but that is apparently how Leicester is pronounced. Also @TarhielI'm glad you are loving the FM but do you mind putting spoiler tags on your post please
