1. Since I got a request for it, here is a 2.12 beta 3 compliant version of the Fresnel Mod: https://www.moddb.com/mods/the-dark-mod/addons/fresnel-mod-212-beta-3/ Also, the Animated Grass Demo has been made 2.12 beta compliant: https://www.moddb.com/mods/the-dark-mod/addons/arcturuss-animated-grass-demo
2. Sure! My first draft for a wiki article "Lightgem" would look like this: " The lightgem is a light indigator on the HUD and an important part of The Dark Mod Gameplay. The lightgem itself indicates how visible the player is. The visibility is based on how much light is hitting the player, but also depends on whether you are crouched, moving, have a weapon drawn, or being under water. The wings on either side of the gem indicates when the player is crouching. Below the lightgem is a health indicator. When the player is injured, a small red bar appears below the lightgem. The bar shows how much health you have left and decreases from right to left. Health potions and various types of food will replenish health. The bar remains visible until the health is fully restored. Above the lightgem is a breath indicator. When the player is under water, a small blue bar appears above the lightgem. The bar shows how much air you have left and decreases from right to left. When the bar runs out, you'll begin to take damage. Surfacing or using a Breath Potion will restore your air bar. The lightgem is an object that the player always carries and is not visible in the inventory. A user can disable the lightgem and the wings in Settings - Gameplay - General - Hide Lightgem. The health indicator and breath indicator will remain visible. " (With the caveat that I would need to use the preview-functionality to fix any formatting errors I may have made before publishing it.) I would also * link "BREATH INDICATOR", "LIGHTGEM", and "HEALTH INDICATOR" from "The_Dark_Mod_Gameplay#HUD_(Heads-Up_Display)" to the new article "Lightgem". * create "health indicator" redirecting to "lightgem" ("#redirectlightgem") * create "breath indicator" redirecting to "lightgem" I registered on The Dark Mod Bugtracker on 29 December and I have since reported 68 issues from a personal log of issues that I had assembled during hours of testing TDM 2.11. The reports are not perfect, but I think they show my intentions are good. I understand the reluctance, especially if there have been incidents of spammers on the wiki, but as an open source project relying on volunteer work it is also important to keep a low threshold for contributing to the product. If I'm not up to par, you'll discover it quickly. Or, rather, you would have already discovered it in the Bugtracker.
3. Figured I'd post this for two reasons: The sheer hilariousness of the sequence and how satisfying it is to watch, and a potential bug report since this is likely not intended and should seriously not be possible. Enjoy the goodness No cheat codes were used and targeting is enabled: I was just trying to annoy the guards after they spotted me, then noticed this is actually a thing I can get away with. What most likely happens is due to me standing on the table, they can't pathfind their way to my location, and since I'm also in total darkness the AI loses track of me. This means that if you climb on any tall object in a dark area, you can hit guards with the blackjack and they never realize you're there, they just stand around screaming in pain and occasionally go searching in a random direction. Obviously the TDM AI will never be highly realistic, but hopefully a tweaked algorithm can be used to prevent such uncanny sillyness from being quite as accessible
4. In the first post of the other topic Geep proposed: Then Stgatilov's answer: But I think applying subtitles in different languages shouldn't be too hard I would think, but I don't know how the current translation system works. The engine should apply the correct subtitles based on the applied language setting, this doesn't need a whole new language system I think. Not sure who's going to write those subtitles though. I can only do Dutch and English and nobody needs Dutch I think. I suggest further discussion of this to take place in topic https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/21741-subtitles-possibilities-beyond-211/
5. Yeah it would be cool to see some more detailed statistics and it’s a shame they aren’t really captured. Since we are talking about fan mission platforms, where players also make the content for the game, I feel like the best thing we’ve got is you can look at the number of content releases for the games. Keep in mind the graph counts campaigns as single missions - so for example NHAT and TBP both count as 1 mission. A good year for TDM has has approaching maybe 50% - mostly we’re 25-30%. https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152494 You could also look at the number of ratings thief missions get on https://www.thiefguild.com/ vs TDM ones, but that is pretty iffy in that you could chalk that up to more awareness of the site in the thief community than TDM Out of curiosity is there a reason a thief player can’t be a new player? I kind of think a player is a player and new players would be ones who are playing the dark mod who weren't? Is there disagreement the base of players most likely to pick up the game are fans of the thief games? They are certainly the most fruitful place to find feedback on the game beyond the sphere of this forum that I have seen. When we were trying to finish up SLL there was a lot of discussion on the forums about how long it had been since there was a release for the game. I am thankful that the stats show at least some stability over the years in terms of releases for TDM, but the trend for all of the games is decline. Not doing anything is a valid response if that’s what the devs want to do - it is not possible to provide evidence that any effort will slow that inertia. As a player and content maker I would just prefer trying to find feedback where it is offered from players who were willing to try the game but ultimately could not engage with it and see if there is anything that can be done within reason to ease them into the game. The game has a lot to offer imo. All those players are potential contributors - contributions in turn attract players - it’d be nice to see the cycle go on as long as it can.
6. Most things are straightforward once you know how it works. Yes, I also noticed that the lightgem is mentioned in other articles. Sure, the article "The Dark Mod Gameplay" gives a brief description, but that article is the 5th hit when searching for "lightgem", and it is not exhaustive. Being such a central object to the gameplay, a dedicated article seems warranted. One other article already links to "lightgem": https://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Special:WhatLinksHere/Lightgem If there was (unexpected) solid opposition to a dedicated article, I'd create a redirect to the relevant section in "The Dark Mod Gameplay" to help wiki readers find it faster. But the topic was not a request for an article about the lightgem (or any other request for a single change), it was a request for an account on the wiki so I can help out with documentation. Who/where can I ask for an account?
7. There is no dedicated article for it, but, it's covered in quite a lot of articles, including the "The Dark Mod Gameplay" article, which is surely one of the starting points for new players: https://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?search=lightgem&title=Special%3ASearch&profile=default&fulltext=1 It's also pretty straight forward anyway?
8. Now that we have a solution to give text a black outline, I don't think there is any pressing need to make the background cap it's brightness below the text brightness. That said, I think the background still helps reduce the visual noise ( for example, if the text were rendering over stripes or dots of dark and light, brightly lit vegetation, etc ). I think we should have both the black outline and darkened background... and the background alpha should be bumped to 0.6 so it's a smidge darker to handle the worse case areas. Example: tdm_subtitles_message.gui.txt tdm_subtitles_common.gui.txt
9. The Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King won an absurd amount of Oscars as a reward for a superb three-part movie ride. Thief: The Dark Project, The Black Parade deserves a similar treatment as the leading vehicle of 25 years worth of Fan Mission content.
10. Or buy a used Geforce GTX 1060 for about 100 €, and you won't have any issues with The Dark Mod anymore.
11. Creating a new thread for this as it was being discussed in an old beta-testing thread starting here: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/21822-beta-testing-high-expectations/&do=findComment&comment=490751 I suppose the main questions are: when should this spawnarg be used, if at all? why was it introduced in the first place? Can we get it documented properly on the Wiki so misuse isn't propagated? @stgatilov @Dragofer
12. some like this kindof play type, this is more like the old D&D board games in playstyle (turn based) which i was not normally fond of myself but after getting used to it i dont find it all that distracting (gives you some time to ponder your next move). gfx are gorgeus and the characters in your party are quite fun (like waking up with a wamp about to bite your jugular then getting all kinds of flustered because you caught him in the act) . some can seem like real aholes like lae'zael untill you get to know her, others are secretive like shadowheart and can actually become quite dark if you dont play your cards right.
13. Very impressive work, and I can't even imagine the workload to be done (readables, dialogs, monologs, briefings, new idle animations, etc.) apart from the not exactly easy mapping with DromEd (or however that's spelled). If someone had told me that they had been working just on Mission 2 for seven years, I would have believed it immediately. You can tell that the convoluted design of the original game was used as a reference, and I personally find it even more complex. It took me almost three hours to complete mission 2 on Expert. I'm now in mission 3 and everything is quite bright there...thankfully the Thief AI isn't that demanding...in the Dark Mod such an enlightened mission would be very "challenging" (to say the least) and would cause quite a few nervous breakdowns!
14. I definitely haven't noticed any difference on 144 Hz here... You should add your hardware details here though. Operating system, and computer specs. Also, the used The Dark Mod version, and fan mission you noticed the issues.
15. I tried the beta yesterday in the Training Mission. The new frob system is very nice. It's very easy now to pick up a body (obviously), and, the manipulation of limbs is easy as well (although it will surely take some time for me to get used to it, simply because I'm so used to the old system). Not so excited about some other changes. The leaning, for example, while improving the viewing angle of the player, feels a bit unrealistic. I know, the new system is closer to the one in the original game, but, I don't know if any of you tried to lean in real life. No way any human being could lean so wide, unless it's tied to a rubber band. I get it, gameplay isn't always about realism (actually, in most cases, it isn't), but, I think a game shouldn't feel too arcade-y, and, this definitely does feel arcade. And, I always liked Dark Mod for its rather realistic movement. Same with the new mantling. I don't know what you felt was wrong with the mantling before, but, this new, faster system just feels arcade. The mantling was already very quick compared to what a human is capable in real life, but, the new system even exaggerates that. Yes, it feels smooth and fast, but, I prefer a bit of realism. So, yeah, rather a 1 out of 3 out of the systems I mentioned which I feel like is an improvement. The leaning and mantling, I rather consider setback. I think this is, in general, a bit "bleeding edge" in terms of gameplay changes. I really didn't feel like mantling and leaning needed an improvement, for example, and, it might make a change for missions which were designed with the original gameplay.
16. In High Expectations, I used a custom water material because I wanted a water surface that was dark and not entirely transparent. It looked pretty decent and I am using it in my next FM as well. However in 2.12 the water material has a greenish tinge to it (see attached screenshots). Here is the material - it's basically 'water_stream' with a blend stage using matt black: https://github.com/FrostSalamander/fsx/blob/main/materials/fs_water_stream_dark.mtr These screenshots have the brightness and gamma cranked up to maximum, because the difference is subtle (but noticeable) on normal levels and the screenshots were way too dark without it. High Expectations: WIP FM:
17. Looking at the code, the originals were "pm_mantle_pull 750" and "pm_mantle_pullFast 450". The new "pm_mantle_pull" value is "400". A "pm_mantle_pullFast" value of "450" would be slower than regular pull, not faster. With both being set to "400", they are at least similar. Other than that, it's subjective and the feedback from playtesters was positive. Also, referenced internally here: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/22256-movementcontrols-settings-in-main-menu/&do=findComment&comment=489158
18. Hi, this mission is crashing on my system and I cannot go on. Playing "Hidden Hands - The lost citadel" Version 6 on Fedora Linux Version 38. I paste the whole output of the console below. 19. That sort of tone doesn't fly in our forums.
20. There is no "problem", you just don't understand what quickload does. As the name suggests, it loads the quicksave. To load a manually saved game, you have to go to the menu, and load that game. Just like in every other game. Simple. And, no loot is lost. By the way, there is really no reason to manually save at all. The Dark Mod has a system which saves 2 quicksaves, so, if you messed up and accidentally quicksaved the game, you still have the other (older) quicksave available. The only real reason I see for saving manually is before a (in your opinion) mission critical action, where you might want to see what the outcome of another action is.
21. I would use this massive list for any fan missions, it includes campaigns too: https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=148090 There are a lot of Fan Missions for the picking, I myself go for the lesser known ones and the short variety, because sometimes they hide a gem or two. Just like jaxa, I'm a bit outdated after the temporal retirement, but I do remember some amazing campaigns like "The Black Frog". If you intend to play The Black Frog, you should play the first two of the L'Arsene series missions, it's how I did it myself. Also, yes, L'Arsene are a fantastic series. The first mission of L'Arsene is a "rough draft", author was a bit new to Thief level making, but still great either way, after the 3rd you will see how his skill increased by a massive amount.
22. Unfortunately, TDM forum deletes the separator between the numbers. So I have to guess where one number ends and the next starts Also, user can rename screenshot manually, or push it through something that would rename it automatically. Thenwe won't see coordinates on screenshot address on forums.
23. tdm_show_viewpos cvar and screenshot_viewpos command: https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/22310-212-viewpos-on-player-hud-and-screenshots/
24. I can access joebarnin to my PC via VNC ubuntu 22.04 LTS cinamon Desktop 50s vdsl give. only if he can play my dark mod One question is, is there a remote maintenance software that can do this? I don't have anything personal on my PC, just Darkmod
25. I think a little dynamics to the windows (with light) on various buildings would add quite some life to the dark mod. A first step might be to just simply animate the brightness of *some of* the window texture slightly and randomly +/- 5% or so to give the impression of a candle burning inside. Windows that are close to rooms - for example a window next to a window that you can open could perhaps be enhanced by shadows moving inside (for example when a guard/person is moving by). Not sure if this have been suggested before, or if this at all possible. Personally I think it would add a lot of life to the game and make it less static in places.
