  1. I cannot load saves/quicksave in one of my project maps anymore. When starting quickload/load the mission loads a tiny bit, but crashes to desktop then. Can't say whether this was already a problem with the previous beta versions. Checked all other WIPs and it works fine there. qconsole.log Darkmod.cfg
  2. Is this really a problem? Maybe we can figure that out before reverting the "J", which previously was so badly spaced it looked like it had a space character after it. It would be helpful to identify which missions have such pseudographics. I suspect it's a small number. And those using Stone font smaller still. In that regard, I did some preliminary experiments, limited to a cohort of 46 FMs on my machine with expanded FM .pk4s, that I can do full-text searches across files on, with TextPad. (@stgatilov, I imagine you are in a position to similarly and more conclusively search the entire english FM collection.) I searched with characters (or short strings) that would be likely to be found in pseudographics. For untranslated FMs, I searched in filenames of form *.xd . For translated FMs (those that had string "#str_" in their *.xd; there were 8 such FMs in my cohort) I searched in file english.lang Results Many search strings were useless due to too many false hits: "_" Widely used as part of internal xd name. Used on separate line as heading underscore. "/" Widely used as part of internal xd name. "\" (except "\\") Widely used \n or \" escape character "--" (assuming single dash is everywhere) Several in a row to bracket a heading, or as part of a letter's signature. Used on separate line, as heading underscore or as border between paragraphs These search strings were moderately useful, showing up in just a few FMs (tho none were pseudographics on examination): "=" Used on separate line as heading underscore (in penny3's erasing.xd) "+" Used as bullet points, or (several in a row) to bracket a heading (in penny3's erasing.xd; in bcd's english.lang) These search strings were most promising: "|" Only 1 hit, but it's a table-form pseudographic! (northdale1's snowedinn.xd) "\\" (i.e., escaped \) No hits found in my cohort Inspection of snowedinn.xd showed this: Note that it uses book_calig_mac_humaine.gui; so this pseudographic was not in Stone font
  3. I've encountered this problem every now and then: https://streamable.com/gm74g1
  4. Basically correct, but most of the TDM missions are not on an open field, but in narrow town environments. As has been said before, the bowman could have moved or hid himself. I see that a lesser problem than them not reacting to melee attacks which must come from nearby!
  5. Body awareness please. https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/20013-are-you-gonna-add-this/
  6. I have added some notes to 6436 relating to the 'shot from afar' problem. For your main point (1 in your original report) I think that the main aspect of it is that you are (code-wise) literally invisible to the guards. It's as though if there was a real-life invisible man who whacks you on the shoulder from behind, you'd whirl round and there would be no-one there. What would you do?
  7. I loved it. Awesome game. I faceplanted at the people who asked for quest markers in the Steam forums there... Herr, lass Hirn regnen. The game is so great, and so true to the original, because it doesn't hold your hand. When is the new breed of gamers gonna learn.
  8. Horror themed fan mission - exploration of seemingly deserted keep in the middle of swamps. Spiders, undead, darkness. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is the story about the fate of my family. My uncle, Ralph Mac Roberts, is the baron of a keep nestled deep within the Rahenaen marshes. It was once an important outpost tasked with guarding one of the few Builder roads that cross the marsh, but after the Inventor`s Guild built a system of nearby dams that flooded the whole land, the road closed and there was no longer anything to watch over anymore. The keep itself needed reinforcement against the raising water level and the trade routes become almost impassable, not only for the carriages but for lone couriers as well. There hadn`t been any messages coming from the keep for over a year and my father was about to assemble a caravan so he could go on an expedition to the keep himself. However, in the middle of the night before he was set to leave, a carrier pigeon landed on his windowsill. My father received the letter and read the apologies from my uncle and his family, excusing their long absence. As a way to make reparations for their extended silence, my uncle invited me to the keep to stay there for a fortnight or so. My uncle had instructed me to leave my horse three leagues away from the keep by the nearest charcoal burning hut and hike the remainder of the road on foot, as the trek through the marsh is treacherous for horses. The weather will be awful this time of year, but my father insists that I should go anyways to ensure that our relatives are okay. These plains become dreadfully deserted - to the point where you more expect to meet the dead than the living. And by the way - I think I`m lost. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Download link: https://1drv.ms/u/s!Aj1DVS465udZgVkXteBbr6cUxdPH Thanks: to the TDM team for great tools, and all the contributors for their assets, to betatesters: Amadeus, Bienie, Boiler's_hiss, Dragofer, Filizitas, Judith, nbohr1more, s.urfer, again to Amadeus for proofreading and text tweaks, and to all the players for their time! 9. IMO it's one of these cases again, where you try to solve asset-level problem by making changes on the engine level. What I'm interested the most though: let's say I have custom candle assets / entities in my WIP that work like in Thief 3 (first frob extinguishes candles, second one picks them up). Will these changes break it?
  10. I haven't used DR in a while, and saw that my old layout was gone. Trying to muck about and re-establish some half-assed approximation of that took a while. Problems I had: "View -> New XY View" . OK, I need an YZ view, does that cover it? Took a while to determine, yes it does, you have to use Ctl-Tab to get to alternatives. (Never used that much in the past, once I had my 3 orthogonal views). HOWEVER, with this new system, sometimes I would create the 2D view, but couldn't then direct Ctl-Tab to it. Bug? It became clear after a while that there were some places you could dock, and some not, and that the blue haze would indicate that. And that those locations might change depending on what you did before. One problem for me was I had a 2D view that I wanted to dock in the right lower corner, but it would only do a full-height docking. And after a full-height dock, there was no way to grab a corner handle to make it less than full height. I'm not asking for that feature... I just wish I had a reasonable understanding of the best way to sequence and manage the horizontal and vertical splits. So: Do update the now-obsolete section of the user manual, and ideally provide a thorough video to illustrate the new system. (Sorry, datiswous, your vid above is not it.) Hint: That unrushed video, with audio, should demonstrate how to approximate each of the old layout styles.
  11. @MirceaKitsune - have you raised a bug report for this particular problem (searching in the wrong place if shot by an arrow)? I think I have found the cause of it and can write it up in the bug tracker. In short, I believe the intended behaviour is that the victim is supposed to search halfway between him and the shooter (presumably chosen because he shouldn't really know where the shooter really is) but the code that sets this point gets overridden shortly afterwards by code that sets the search point to his current location. It's quite instructive (if you like that sort of thing) to read up the various bugs reports on AI behaviour that have been raised down the years. In particular, bug 3331 contains a number of fixes to problems similar to those reported in this thread.
  12. Why? Can you explain? Personally I see nothing wrong with that, looking at that function is obvious that they made it to not return anything, it just writes a float value to a file, and in C any function that doesn't return anything returns void. And those inner write functions may have error handling of some kind, so no need to return a bool for success or failure by the main function. The only potencial problem I see with it is they pass the file handle by pointer and there's no guard there for a eventual null pointer being passed to the function and it will crash if that happens but the fact this worked for years tells me they made sure that never happens.
  13. I looked closer at the problem in Dragon's Claw, and this is caused by some kind of precision issue in dmap. The .proc file contains imprecise BSP plane: /* node 18377 */ ( 0.0399680398 1 0 1202.8780517578 ) -38 18378 And also there is a visportal stored there: /* iap 62 */ 4 37 50 ( -96 -1200 -488 ) ( 304 -1216 -488 ) ( 304 -1216 300 ) ( -96 -1200 300 ) The game loads the visportal polygon and computes portal plane from it, which is: plane (a=-0.0399680398, b=-0.999200940, c=0.00000000, d=-1202.87805) As you see, the plane normals are different by 0.2%. The visportal plane computed from polygon is almost perfectly unit, but the BSP plane is not unit (length slightly greater than unit). This makes the game think it is on the left of visportal in one place, but on the right of visportal in another place. I tried to re-dmap but the data is the same. I'll try to see what is going on. Indeed, making the portal axis-aligned would have most likely fixed the issue.
  14. Not so long ago I found what could make a pretty good profile picture and decided to try it out on these new forums. But I couldn't find a button anywhere that would let me change it. I asked on Discord and it seems Spooks also couldn't find anything anywhere. So I logged into an old alternative account and, lo and behold, that account has a button. This is on the first screen I get when I: 1) click on my account name in the top-right of the browser -> 2) click on 'profile'. Compared to my actual account: Are you also missing this button on your account? It'd be very much appreciated if that functionality could be restored to any of the affected accounts.
  15. Oh yes: I have both sight and hearing set to Forgiving. I didn't think that would be related: IIRC it only affects the multiplier for how much being seen in light or heard while making noise increases the alert level per event. I should test on a higher alert level too just in case: I tend to be sloppy and impatient thus I used that for years so I wouldn't get caught all the time on more difficult FM's (lots of guards in tight areas with lights you can't turn off). I have noticed an aspect that does work well: If you're making noise by running even in darkness, alert AI will head toward your direction while searching, they won't go around randomly but actually care where the impulse came from. The problem is that this doesn't seem to scale over larger distances: If they briefly see you in broad light at a distance enough to draw weapons, AI won't head toward your general direction but begin searching their own vicinity... and at least on Forgiving the same happens if you shoot a broadhead arrow at a guard's helmet: I still think the guard should actively run toward your location instead, not exactly where you are but they should go to that road or barge into the same building.
  16. Although the argument of using ads to finance creators is legitimate, the abuse that YT makes of them is not and makes the use of adblockers inevitable, if one does not want, for example, a concert to be crushed by interruptions, even with advertorials. , this is independent of countless clickbaits in the thumbnails and other shit that YT wants to push us to use YT Premium with its abusive prices. A few months ago, YT began an aggressive anti-adblock campaign, with pop-ups reminding us of the ban and even blocking the player, in addition to YT Premium's self-advertisements. This leaves the user with only the options of either swallowing the ads interrupted by their favorite videos or signing up for YT Premium. Many have already moved to other platforms, for example Odysee, but the problem is that no other platform can compete in content with YT. Luckily there is a solution to this problem, which, at least for the moment, works and is a small userscript that we can add to our browser. For this we install the Tampermonkey extension and add this script https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/477725-youtube-iframe-adblocker In the Vivaldi browser it is not necessary to use Tampermonkey, there you just have to download this script in a folder (do not delete it) and drag the script to the extensions tab in Developer mode to install it. This surrounds YT's adblock detector, as this script dynamically overlays the video on an iFrame, making the adblocker invisible to YT.
  17. I tried to debug this. It turns out that "global variables" includes all immediate values (including string literals which take 128 bytes each) and all global function declarations (4 byte per function, including even engine events). I see 119240 bytes before starting Iris, and 124924 bytes after starting it. On Bakery Job, I see 109680 before starting game, 109700 bytes after starting it. So It seems that core game takes about 110K, but Iris itself takes only about 10K, and the limit is at 196K. Does not sound like a big problem for missions. With addons, you have to compile all of them at once, and perhaps there is a lot of code, so you reach the limit. Ok, let's double MAX_GLOBALS for 2.12.
  18. We get along and players win. Thanks again! Both the Electric Mine and the Shock Mine look more or less the same in-game but the difference in the approach is considerable. I first wanted to do without the Gas stim and use the KO stim instead: To avoid the cough To avoid extinguishing nearby candles and fires Stims are great for things that may or many not happen but when things must happen stims are unreliable and we end up using stims wrongly, creating more issues as we go. The KO stim didn't work: It doesn't hurt the player KOs don't get credited to the player So I scrapped everything and started from zero. A script now takes care of the most relevant events with no room for unintended side effects or failure. It is not a general mine problem, this is how the game is designed and it our problem. If you mean: can I fix it with a few edits? The answer is I have no clue. You must use my version. I took advantage of both built-in "defs" and scripted events. Shock Mines first damage AI: If AI is still alive then AI fall unconscious (KO) If AI is low on health AI dies and so will you!
  19. I've been getting more and more frequent crashes when running TDM. This started happening out of the blue about two months ago. First, the error was: "The NVIDIA OpenGL driver lost connection with the display driver". This would cause TDM to hang and then crash. After this happened a few times I updated to the most recent drivers, and the error changed slightly to an appcrash with "The NVIDIA OpenGL driver detected a problem with display driver", with the faulty app being nvoglv32.DLL. When TDM crashes, it also causes DR, and Lightwave to crash as well if they're open. If Photoshop is open it gives a "Photoshop has encountered problem with display driver and has disabled GPU enhancements." warning. The crashes are happening more frequently in TDM now. Used to be once a week, now it seems to happen any time I have TDM open for more than 5 minutes. And I just got that Photoshop warning message this morning even though I hadn't opened TDM. I got messages like this two years ago, and got a new video card (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti) , which made them go away. Two years seems like a short time for a GPU to start dying...is there any way to confirm that the card is the problem? I don't mind replacing it if so, but I don't want to spend a couple hundred on a new card and then find out the problem still happens.

    2016+ CPU/GPU News

I don't think they aren't delivering better hardware. 8700G is obviously much better than 5700G, Nvidia seems to be pushing top-end by at least 60% per gen. AMD might stagnate with RDNA4 but deliver 4080-ish performance at much lower $400-600 prices. Most of the reviewers are testing without upscaling or are being transparent about where they are using it. It's a must to turn-on only with raytracing it seems. AMD's APUs are clearly kneecapped by the memory bandwidth, and from the leaks we've seen there is no solution in sight for the mainstream APUs (next one is Strix Point). Strix Halo on the other hand will have a doubled memory bus width, but I wouldn't count on a mini PC with it to beat CPU+dGPU combos in price/performance unless we see some really generous pricing. They could work magic with it if they wanted to, particularly a cheaper 8-core model. Strix Halo is presumably using up to 2x 8-core Zen 5 chiplets, so 6/8/12/16 is planned according to leaks. https://videocardz.com/newz/amd-ryzen-8000-zen5-apus-leak-strix-halo-with-rdna3-5-igpu-to-compete-with-up-to-rtx-4070-max-q That leak is almost a year old, but from what I can gather we'll probably see this: 16-core Zen 5, 40 CUs RDNA3.5, 256-bit memory (270 GB/s) 12-core Zen 5, 32 CUs RDNA3.5, 256-bit memory (270 GB/s) 8-core Zen 5, 24/32(?) CUs RDNA3.5, 256-bit memory (270 GB/s) 6-core Zen 5, 20 CUs RDNA3.5, 128-bit memory (135 GB/s) All coming with a 45-50 TOPS XDNA2 AI engine. Sometime in 2025. Those memory bandwidth figures may be assuming around DDR5-8200 to DDR5-8400, not sure. A 7600 XT has 288 GB/s and 6700 XT has 384 GB/s, so there's still starvation but doubling that memory bus should greatly alleviate the problem.
  21. Unless we add some special subdirectory for addons, I'm afraid they look like core files. And having duplicate decl file in core assets is a problem worth complaining about. Also it might be a bit uncertain which decl wins in the end in such situation.
  22. Thanks. Linux user and I play TDM at least weekly: Never noticed any physics issues myself, whatever happened in the FM must be a relatively rare scenario... that's a FM I haven't revisited so I was lucky to miss the bug then. There is in fact a little problem in latest Beta, though it's so small I didn't bother to document it carefully, but I'll share the idea of it at least: If you climb into a tight space between an object and the ceiling and turn on the flashlight, jumping may cause the light to phase through the floor and disappear temporarily. Say you have a crate pressed against a ceiling where you can only climp and go in while crouched... if the surface is high enough to allow a jump but just low to force you to be crouched, you'll see the light source of the lantern disappear temporarily in mid air. Think I saw it in The King Of Diamonds, if it's important I'll boot it up again and noclip to get a viewpos. Just to make sure you've seen my mention: Please check my message a few posts above where I attached a log, we have a crash where killing AI with a broadhead arrow can cause the engine to go down with a "tried to free uncached trace model" error... not even a main menu crash but one to the OS. It's pretty rare but if you fatally shoot AI often enough it will occur eventually.
  23. I've been having this issue in my own fms, where the first time I enter a new area, the ambient sound will start out loud for a second, and then go down to the intended volume, instead of transitioning properly. This only seems to happen in my own fms, so maybe it's some setting I overlooked. I made a small test map: test_area_sounds.map There are three areas in the test map. The second area has an ambient volume of -17 db, while the others have 0 db. The problem is noticeable to me right when the map loads and the first ambient starts playing, but it's even more noticeable when crossing to the second area, where the sound starts loud, and then goes way down and stays there. After I've entered all areas for the first time, then all is good, the sounds transition fine. As in, the volume goes down and then up to reveal the new ambient sound.
  24. Thanks! I guess that was a red herring. The problem happens due to a change made in source rev 10498: May I kindly ask that you nudge the player start position? It seems the current start position relies on incorrect physics and stgatilov does not want to revert to the incorrect behavior. Edit: Looks there may be a "code side" fix after all.
  25. I think the issue was that I was using a zoned approach with non-zoned sounds. I switched to the *_z variations of them and the problem seems to be gone. Although, for some reason it seems I still need to have fidelay 0.1, which is probably a sign that there's still something wrong. @demagogueIt took me a while to notice the _z sounds are in a separate folder, though... I had no idea what you were talking about when you mentioned them. Now I do. @peter_spy it's hopefully fixed in the latest, which I just released a couple hours ago.
