Hi I`m back again to seek advice on an issue I`m having.

It`s with a fire place, The light is bleeding through to the other side strangly.

Standard wood fire place and light_fireflames the fire place is against a brush wall and I split it so there are two walls between the fireplace and the room behind it.

Thanks for the help.

It`s a moving light I do`nt think it`s ambient mmm...

I`ll delete and put another light in it`s place and see if it`s still an issue.

Nah Same thing maybe I`ll try moving the flames forward a bit.

Hi,

If any one has any ideas that would help me get to the resolve of my problem I would appreciate it.

Why is the light protruding through the wall? Short of rebuilding the entire fire place section I`m stumped.

Oh wait a minute. Ambient light maybe conflicting in some way or if set to noshadow but it realy needs shadows.

Amient light is by default no shadows yes?

Hi greyman thanks for the reply.

No it`s not stock (prefab) it`s stock models/darkmod/fireplace/fireplace_wooden.ase with models/darkmod/fireplace/fireplace_wood_long.lwo put in the bottom and light_fireflames_1 as the light source.

I`ll check the placement of the logs.

I`m going to upload this map soon for beta testing it will be my first following the tutorial. I am still working on it and have a second in the story line {sort of} that I`m also working on at the moment but I`ve gone back to my first to beta test my self and to be honest it`s full of gruff I have to fix.

I`m thinking I will delete the fire place and import a prefab. Hopefully I can make it fit and look right.

I will first try the static light.

Back of the fireplace probably does not have faces. Since doom3 uses the backface to draw Shadows, it's not making any Shadows. The Beds have the same issue where a candle would light up the underside of the bed. Solution is to put a back on the fireplace with a patch or brush with an actual texture.

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

I assume he has the fireplace tucked against the wall behind it, which should provide the shadow.

You might be right, however the screenshot is like 480x280 res and dark as all hell, can't really tell.

It's possible the fireplace is pushed into the wall a little bit and causing the light to bleed through?

Thanks for the reply.

How do I make it have faces? Should I just make a brush fit the back of the fire place, Texture it and convert to patch?

Don't bother with the patches, make a square brush and put it against the back like this:

The fire place was not touching the wall to start with but even moving it against the wall and then into the wall did not remove the light bleed.

Sorry about the screen shot It`s a matter of bandwidth. I have next to non and my ips has more than they can use:)

I`ll make sure to post screen shots in future with the window resolution I use to test (720p).

Also whoever made the model didn't make it right, there's no way to grid align it so that the base of the fireplace is on the floor.

You have to go down to grid size 0.5 to get it to be flush with the floor.

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

Thank you.

I think you may have hit on something as I`m using mostly 0.125 grid size to fit stuff so maybe I used another grid size to fit the fire place but even after checking at 0.125 it`s still bleeding light and it has to be the lightsource right?

What happens if sometimes I`m using 8 or 4 and to fit things in I`m using the minimum 0.125 to fit assets in to the map? Does it matter when I dmap?

The grid size doesnt affect it at all.. Only be carefull when creating very small brushes (But this is not connected to your problem).

Create a brush inside the backwall (doesn't have to fit it perfectly) and texture it common/shadows. This is an invisible non-solid texture that cast's shadows.

@Tr00prtj:

If all else fails, make a copy of your '*.map' file, rename it '*.map.txt', and post it here as an attachment. Then we can all see the exact situation, and one or more of us will show you how to fix it, or we'll end up filing a bug report against TDM if there's a problem with the light itself. I, for one, have lost track of what entities you're using and where you are after all the suggestions.

Edit: Or, if you'd prefer not to post it, pick one of the illustrious crew above and PM them the map.

Thanks again for the tips AluminiumHaste

So brushes and patches are best used at 8-1 or 2 griid size. I will be kepping this method in use as I create my maps.

My initial light bleed problem still persists. I`m still to work out what is going?

Would anyone like to test my map.

Was checking out old translation packs and decided to fire up TDM 1.07. Rightful Property with sub-20 FPS areas yay! ( same areas run at 180FPS with cranked eye candy on 2.12 )

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!
