Xolvix Posted November 15, 2020 Report Posted November 15, 2020 Gigabyte H310M S2H Motherboard Intel Core i5-8400 CPU 8 GB RAM NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 Couple of TB of storage, all SSD I am in the process of procuring an upgrade to 16 GB of RAM, but only because of Cyberpunk 2077. It's been a very long time since I upgraded for any specific purpose like a game, it's normally only when enough hardware is out of date to make typical usage unacceptable... or when things die. I suppose I could upgrade the graphics as well but since I only play 1080p @ 60 Hz stuff, even "modern" titles run at acceptable performance for the most part. I also play a heck of a lot of older titles - I feel guilty when spending lots of money on a new graphics card when there's little I play to utilize it with. But that's just me. 1 Quote A word of warning, Agent Denton. This was a simulated experience; real LAMs will not be so forgiving.
revelator Posted November 17, 2020 Report Posted November 17, 2020 Asus rampage iv extreme, with a core i7 3930K and 32 gig kingston black edition ddr3 ram, crucial MX500 SSD and several mechanical seagate HDD (storage space in excess of 8 TB). The board and CPU are pretty old but still able to handle anything i can throw at it, sadly 3 fan headers have become broken over time but else everything works 100%. GFX card is an sapphire R9 390 with 8 gb ram, while not able to handle 4k with any reasonable fps i normally game at 1080 resolutions and at that resolution this old geezer still eats any game i can throw at it. I havent upgraded anything for several years now, but im pondering going for the 6800 XT when it comes out. 2 Quote

revelator Posted February 16, 2021 Report Posted February 16, 2021 Old RIVE board has been replaced with a temporary P9X79 LE board. Takes the same cpu and has mostly the same options though only 2 sata 6 ports compared to the 4 on the RIVE and 4 usb 3.0 where the RIVE had 8. As a blast from the past it actually supports both ps/2 keyboard and mouse xD where the RIVE could only take either a ps/2 keyboard or a mouse. At some point ill probably scrounge up the dough for an asus X79 deluxe board, yeah staying with my old cpu seems like a weird decision but an upgrade to something similar new would cost me an arm and both legs and the old cpu still has plenty kick left in it. revelator Posted February 18, 2021 Report Posted February 18, 2021 found a few on ebay at about half that even comes with cpu and ram though it only comes with a core i7 4820 still it seems to be a good deal. Got a xeon laying around also though it is even worse than the 4820 as it is also a quad core but has no hyperthreading like the 4820, still it might come in handy for some if they just need a cpu for testing a socket 2011 board. The nice thing about the X79 deluxe is that it has allmost double the amount of ports for sata 6 and usb 3 compared to the RIVE, also sports a built in wifi card and the asmedia usb 3 chipset was updated to a newer version compared to the RIVE and other asus boards from that time. Guest Posted February 18, 2021 Report Posted February 18, 2021 (edited) Switched to an nvme drive for system and apps, and separate SSD for games. Guess I'm stating the obvious, but first loading time for most TDM missions has improved substantially. Edited February 18, 2021 by Guest Quote
revelator Posted February 18, 2021 Report Posted February 18, 2021 ssd's really give a kick especially on older pc's depends on the chipset though, the older asmedia and marwell chipsets are slow going still faster than mechanical but not lightning speed. Fastest i seen yet was the one in my asus laptop it used an intel chipset win 10 litterally started before i could hit the bios key Oo which is nice speedwise but not so much if you need to make changes in bios lol. Guest Posted February 18, 2021 Report Posted February 18, 2021 (edited) It's a significant change for both old and new rigs, when you switch from HDDs. M2 drives are even bigger blast. I can barely see win10 login screen, system is fully booted in 2 seconds. If there are no apps blocking the shutdown, it powers off in one. I need to kick the old habit of switching the computer on and going to the kitchen for something to drink, as I can just push the power button, sit down, and it's ready to work Edited February 18, 2021 by Guest Quote
revelator Posted February 19, 2021 Report Posted February 19, 2021 I ment comparatively but yes it gives a nice boost regardless. measured my asus laptop once and the throughput was in excess of 25GB per second... that is insane no wonder i could not manage to hit any buttons. Quote
Guest Posted February 19, 2021 Report Posted February 19, 2021 Yup, while the fastest sata SSDs go to like 500 megs, m2 nvme drives can go up to 30 gigs right now. Quote

I think a laptop with the specifications of mine for € 175 must be second hand, but not new. But yes, a basic CPU can be had for this and even for less, not for an arm and both legs. Today there are very good offers in computing that make you doubt the need to expand an old computer or use it better as an auxiliary equipment for the new one (which I would do) or as home server. revelator Posted February 19, 2021 Report Posted February 19, 2021 Aye these boards are all used though sometimes you can get lucky and get a brand spanking new one though prices on ebay are rather unrealistic for those 1200 pounds or more for those are not unheard of. In these days the CPU does not really matter that much anymore for gaming atleast since most of the heavy stuff was moved GPU side, still it is nice to have a workhorse capable of 12 threads or more when multitasking which i do a lot . revelator Posted February 19, 2021 Report Posted February 19, 2021 Sadly neither my old RIVE or the replacement board can use an nvme drive for booting unless i hack the bios (which i did a long time ago with UBU hehe) so when the X79 deluxe is in i might buy an nvme add in card for it. Quote

What NVME drive are you using that gets 25GB's per second? Quote I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.
revelator Posted February 19, 2021 Report Posted February 19, 2021 Its built into my asus laptop so not sure without taking it apart but from there site it looks to be this one -> https://en.accessoires-asus.com/laptop/storage/ssd-nvme-storage/modele/a712fa mines just a 500GB Quote
revelator Posted February 19, 2021 Report Posted February 19, 2021 strange though that it says 2600MB while hdtune says around 24GB maybe a bug in the program ?. EDIT: sorry 25GB ca. Quote
AluminumHaste Posted February 20, 2021 Report Posted February 20, 2021 2.6GBs per second makes more sense. Quote I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.
revelator Posted February 21, 2021 Report Posted February 21, 2021 Aye i was a bit unsure about that one, but seems my old hdtune does not correctly support ssd's. 25gb's was a bit unrealistic tbh. Still 2.6gb's is nothing to scoff at :). Quote
