Hardware: Core i7 920 CPU, clocked from stock 2.66 GHz to 3.00 GHz. 9GB triple-channel DDR3 memory. Radeon HD 6870 video card.


Software: Linux openSUSE 13.2 x64, KDE 4.14.9. MESA 10.3.7 on Gallium / AMD BARTS.


Apart from notorious and solvable sound issues with PulseAudio, TDM 2.03 runs very well and at a good performance (I didn't measure and note average FPS yet). Since I'm one of the fewer people who play games on the free video driver (Mesa) instead of the proprietary one (fglrx), I should especially keep an eye on things and report anything out of the ordinary :)

Graphic drivers are the only reason I have not totally switched to Linux, I use USB Mint online and win7 for gaming, does the Mesa driver work for most games?

Whether it works can greatly depends on your setup... the free driver is also good with AMD cards (not Nvidia). I have a Radeon HD 6870, on openSUSE 13.2 x64; For me it works very well and performance is nearly the same as the proprietary driver, for nearly every Linux native game engine I've tried.

That CPU could do with being relegated to a backup CPU, and then hunt around for a cheap s/h core i7 to wack in it place.


Comparison between your Pention and a 4790 same as I have -




Where the i7 whill fare better is for multi-core/thread applications.

Got Nouveau, removed nvidia and its working superbly
- Experienced Performance, Steps you had to perform to get it running or problematic driver versions, etc.

Just installed the game and its working smoothly.

- Sapphire Radeon R7 260X 1 GB

- 24" Asus VS248HR 1920x1080, 1ms, 50M:1


- Pretty good performance most of the time, slows down a bit in outdoor areas (the worst is Lords and Legacy: 10-20 FPS outdoors near the castle).

- I have Ubuntu on the 2nd hard drive but haven't tried TDM on it yet...

Change this to nVidia and you will see better perf, that and the R7 260X is low spec compared to the rest of your system.



Thanks - yeah the card was a budget buy (used). Any suggestions for an Nvidia upgrade? It seems for anything decent these days it's at least £100.


FYI In my kids' PCs (Core 2 Duos) I put Nvidia GT 710s and we get a very playable 30-60 FPS on those in TDM (although for my next upgrade I'd be looking for something better)..

Since the 4GB 1050TI is only €20 more, I recently ordered an Zotac 1050TI for €153.


DOOM 2016 @ 1920x1200 and ultra setting uses 2.8GB, 3dmark Fire Strike Ultra 3.3GB. TDM COO-BCD set to highest (which lags noticably) uses 1.8GB.


So I reckon, the 4GB version was an good investment...


Which brings my system spec to:



Xeon E3-1245 4x3.3/3.7 GHz + HT


Zotac GTX 1050 TI mini 4GB

Nvidia 376.33 drivers


The card has no external power connector, which is perfect, since this Fujitsu workstation does not offer them anyway.

As a brief statement, I have found some quirks around how my 1050 handles Doom 3 in general.

Using an autoexec.cfg to force r_displayRefresh "60" has resolved this for me in TDM but in Doom 3

I was able to overcome the strange stutter by setting com_fixedTic 1 (unbound FPS and game logic)

then enabling vsync to prevent the FPS from going into lunatic speed. It's probably some general driver bug

around refresh rate detection.

Do you think, i have a general Problem? Right when non-Garret leaves the building and heads up the stairs, FPS will drop down to ~19.

If I go from 16x AA/AIF to 8x, this will give ~40 and at 4x all is peachy - solid 60, which is my monitor max.

Thank you for your assistance.


The autoexec.cfg didn't do anything, though I checked that it did load.


Changing the interleave from 1 to 2 did improve from 20 to 25 FPS.


What kind of FPS should I expect? I found a nice low FPS spot, when you exit the building and go the stairs all the way up, you can climb an pipe to the right and then peek into a building:



BTW, video RAM usage shoots up to 3GB with those settings.

Thanks for the testing results.


The VRAM allocation probably scales in relation to how much the engine thinks you have available.

You could try reducing to 1024 and see if any hitching or problems arise.


I was shocked to see your low FPS whereas I have over 100FPS in most of that mission (in recent testing).

Of course, I only have 1360x768 resolution to deal with and

I've been doing most of my testing in 2.05 so we'll need to compare once that version is released.


I just wanted to ensure you had all the recommended optimizations as a baseline.


Lastly, I'll restate that in-game AA for Doom 3 \ TDM is inefficient so I'd strongly recommend turning off AA

and using forced driver AA settings instead.

That seems to make the biggest difference, thanks!


I can't tell, how much of an FPS rise it really is, since regardless of my vsync or r_displayRefresh settings, I can only see 60 max. Which is fine, since it seems to be a solid 60 at the moment, with 8x AIF and 8x FSAA set in the driver.


And also thanks to Bikerdude, I contemplated zipping the file, but never thought about the spoiler feature :)
