  2. Thanks for the heads up. Combining the two FMs into the same archive is troublesome because they will try to share assets that are different between Tales of the Riverside and Down by the Riverside and will therefore break each other. I've changed the download link to one that I know should work. The book has a few hidden objectives attached to it that get completed when you reach certain pages. In any case, it's probably better addressed in the tech support forums and will need a copy of your savegame to trace back to what's causing the crash.

  4. I'm happy to present my first FM, The Spider and the Finch. There may be a spider, but no ghosts or undead. It should run a couple hours. It's now available on the Missions page or the in-game downloader. Many thanks to the beta testers Acolytesix, Cambridge Spy, datiswous, madtaffer, Shadow, and wesp5 for helping me improve and making the mission to the best of my abilities. This would not be have been possible without Fidcal's excellent DarkRadiant tutorial. Thanks also to the many people who answered my questions in the TDM forums.       Yes it was in a discussion where someone was saying how unhappy they are with the way game companies grant themselves permission to do whatever they like to your PC and personal info today. I pointed out that giving up games completely is an unnecessarily overkill solution when there are free games like TDM to play.

  6. I think that a good way is to sort it by download order, the most recent missions are not always downloaded first, that the new added missions are on the top of the list. I sometimes, after downloading/updating a Mission, it is somewhat annoying to scroll through the Missions list to find it. Adding these as the first in the list is maybe a better solution than by release date. This also avoids having to use unnecessary sorting algorithms.

An article about using Stable Diffusion for image compression - storing the data necessary for the neural network to recreate the image in a way that would be more efficient than using standard image compression algorithms like jpeg or webp: https://matthias-buehlmann.medium.com/stable-diffusion-based-image-compresssion-6f1f0a399202 It's just a proof of concept since the quality of the model is not there yet (and the speed would be impractical), it can't do images with several faces very well for example. But it's very interesting because it has completely different tradeoffs than normal lossy compression algorithms - it's not blocky, it doesn't produce blur or color bleed, in fact quite often it actually keeps the overall character of the original image almost perfectly, down to grain levels of a photograph. But it changes the content of the image, which standard compression does not do.
  8. To be clear, the AI algorithms that will be creating 3D models, environments, etc. don't necessarily have anything to do with the text-to-image algorithms that are all the rage right now. But they are already being worked on, and will leverage the improvements in GPUs and ML accelerators. (Some of these GPUs are seeing doubling/quadrupling of compute in a generation.) Hi guys, through the "cheats" topic I got the idea, that it would be quite useful, if there were tags for missions (the post was about removing the killing restriction in some missions to suit the prefered play style). I don't know how easy or difficult this is, but with them, it would be quite convenient to pick missions with playstyles, environment, etc one does want to use. This could also be expanded to other mission properties. I remember a discussion about climbable drains, handles on doors, that cannot be picked and other things the map author chooses for himself. That way these things would be clearer and as I said before, it is easier to choose missions with playstyles that suit oneself. What do think?
  10. @chakkman The human brain is a "machine", and it's entirely possible that human-like intelligence can be created using brain-inspired (neuromorphic) hardware or even in a software simulation on conventional hardware. Obviously, that's not what the current "machine learning" algorithms are doing. They are finding and applying patterns using large datasets and brute force. This can be very useful even if there is no intelligence or emotions involved and it fails hard on edge cases. If many jobs (drivers, call centers, concept artists, etc.) can be eliminated by mere rock-dumb algorithms, well, that says a lot. There will still be plenty of artists, but they could end up being paid less and having their work and art styles routinely "stolen".
  11. Actually, Nvidia has had image models for generating photorealistic faces for years now. They have gotten better over the years. https://developer.nvidia.com/blog/generating-photorealistic-fake-celebrities-with-artificial-intelligence/ Applying 2D text-to-image algorithms to modern games seems unlikely, with the exception of making lots of textures and maybe 2D portraits for UI/character creation, but there are many other algorithms being worked on. Maybe a similar approach could be used to replace procedural generation techniques. Like making a cave/dungeon in Skyrim, or that thing Tels was working on a decade ago. Rather than making a raster image, it could make geometry, place textures, and design a whole city. Bring on the negative societal implications of bots invading art, I'm all for it. But one thing to watch out for is the copyright question. These image models can be trained on a superset of copyrighted images or a smaller focused subset (to mimic an artist's style) and produce images that could lead to novel legal questions and expensive copyright lawsuits. This is not a problem for people making memes and shitposting online, but it could be a massive problem for game developers, big or indie. Save a few bucks on art, get sued into oblivion. Maybe we'll see Business Software Alliance style shakedowns of game developers? "Where'd you get these sprites, EH?" Sounds like vozka has made some textures with it? These can be scaled up from small 512x512 sizes to higher resolution with a separate upscaling algorithm, that's what people have been doing to make stuff presentable along with touchups in Photoshop/GIMP. Whether the results are any good is another story, maybe vozka should post their results.

Since due to the nature of this forum, file/image sharing is used quite frequently, I thought to present some alternatives to the widely used Gdrive, which I don't like so much, especially since the last TOS change. File Sharing To share large files there are several options that also do not require registration. The first is File Hosting Online, which supports files up to 25 Gb, encrypted and also includes a Virus Scan that ensures safe use Another good option is Gofile, free to use, privacy focused and unlimited Bandwith. No refistry needed. While the files are accesed or downloaded at least one time a week, they are never deleted, otherwise inactive files are deleted after 10 days. If you prefer to use P2P, that means to share files directly from PC to other, without a hoster in the middle, there are also very good options, which permits to share files and folders without limites of type and size. The most easy to use is O&O File Direct, a small Desktop app (sadly only Windows), very easy to use 1 Open the app and drag the files/folders you like to share in its window 2 Optional adjust the days and amount of permited downloads and if you want a password 3 Share the link which apears in the app Done The only limits are, that the receptor only can download your files, when your PC is online, on the other hand this permits that you can stop the download in any moment, going offline or shutting down the PC. The other limit is, that the files to share can't be in a protected folder. Her are an Example with a list of Search Enines (Html file 423,56 Kb). While I am online, you can download it https://file.direct/f/pmjVFnjfkjFTKTt5 Videos One of the best options is Streamable (need a free account, inactive videos are deleted after 90 days in the free version) Alternatively you can use Streamja, a simple Video sharer with good privacy, free account optional (nick, mail) Images Ok, there are a lot of Image sharer, most used the known Imgur, because of this I add only one which offers some advantages over Imgur. ImgBox (free account) is a reliable platform to share and host images like Imgur, but it make it very easy to upload and post dozend of images simultaneous, selecting all the images you want and drag them on the window, offering coresponding bulk codes from the selected images to post them with one click for forums (BBcode), Html and others, fullsize or thumbnails. More since Imgur used since some time the hated webm formats for gif images, hardly accepted in most forums.

Short ("easy") mode is a smaller map, so if you are looking for areas others reference below, or 100% of the loot, you'll need to play on another mode. I wanted to create my first mission before I became influenced by too many others' ideas, and limited myself to what has been done before. As such, this mission is not set in a city/town, and has some features that are likely to be provocative. There's a section some really like, which others don't, either way I kept it short to not last too long. I dom't use it, i found it here with the filter set to OpenSource. the TOS and PP isn't excluding for an OpenSource app, if they use ads mean that they also need to pay an server for this online service. OpenSource is not synonymous with free either, perhaps after the beta phase it is no longer free, so perhaps you can take advantage of the fact that it is still free to create a series of textures that can be used or search another one in Futuretools.   20. I investigated the topic, and I still think it is too hard. Precomputed visibility is perhaps the best thing for us. So we can split space into cells, and precompute whether cell A and cell B have unoccluded straight line connecting them. We can limit occlusion only by brushes: there is no need to take models/patches into account. Precomputed visibility should be done on per-area basis. When we compute the visibility data for one area, we consider all visportals and all other areas opaque. In other words, we only check for direct visibility within the area. If such information is available, it can be combined with existing visportal&area traversal code. The main problem is how to precompute visibility on per-cell basis. A solution must: Be conservative: you don't want to occasionally see small holes into nowhere Do perfect occluder fusion: otherwise a big house would not occlude most of the stuff behind it. Have sane build times for brush geometry of our scale. This inevitably leads to pretty complex algorithms. If mapper can add a special brush and say "this is major occluder in visarea N", then we can probably (not sure yet) verify that he is correct in saying that, and simply raytrace this occluder during visportal traversal. But realistically... I don't think mappers would really use this tecnhique, except maybe for a very few people/missions.
